2142, Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2, and BC2: Vietnam are all $4.99 thru Origin until Tuesday (the 9th).http://store.origin.com/store/ea/html/pbpage.summersale?easid=Sale_499_PCDD
Tempting to drop the $4.99 just to connect 2142 to the account, but I already own 2 copies of 2142, so I will probably pass.Oh, and I own 10 copies of BF2 for my LAN parties. :nerd:

Hey Mael, I think anyone can use that link. I found it on Slick Deals. EA just confirmed via Twitter that BF3 will not be on steam because of restrictive practices. They are allowing over 100 other digital downloaders offer it.
Pre-order completed + Mass Effect 2. Thanks! And booo to EA for not allowing Steam, and I believe that is BS - this is an anti-competitive move (not necessarily in an illegal sense) if I ever saw one.

Lol, yeah. At the time when I read TLEF's post, I thought it was odd since Valve/Steam have always been seen as a solid/reputable operation. Seemed weird that EA would have beef with them that way. Then I found out that Origin is EA's game delivery service. :lmao: This is clearly just a case of EA trying to wedge their way into the digital game delivery market.

Message I sent to EA: "I've never had an issue with downloading and patching through Steam. In fact, it beats the days of sitting in a queue for several hours on FilePlanet waiting for the Battlefield 2 v1.41 patch. And you can bet your ### if Origin's downloading and patching service isn't similar to Steam's, then Battlefield 3 will also be the LAST purchase I make on Origin."

I tried to download prior to leaving on vacation but my computer crashed mid way and appears to be dead. The hard drive isn't recognized on reboot. :kicksrock:
Oh snap :sadbanana:
Not to hijack too much but what is the play to fix this? It's the intel SSD that has failed. Should I put the drive in my other machine and try a repair or just reinstall windows? Since I was downloading to my other hard drive I'm stumped what could have happened to the boot drive here.
How far does it make it into boot? I would say try going into BIOS and set boot priority for the DVD drive and throw in your Windows DVD and try a repair install first and foremost. Other simple things are check power connections and power to the drive as well as that the SATA cable is secure. It is amazing how often Ockham's Razor applies.
Looks like a total failure of the Intel SSD. RMA complete and the new drive is on the way.

New conquest gameplay trailer.....WOW

watch it in 1080p. Its absolutely absurd. Jaw dropping stuff IMO. How anyone can watch something like this and prefer to play COD is just beyond me.

The jets look fun as hell. Probably gonna buy a joystick and give flying a shot this time around. A few weeks ago I learned how to actually keep a helicopter in the air for more than 9 seconds :bag:

The video also confirms a few new weapons/vehicles

SCAR-H

AA cannon (as opposed to the SAM missile launchers from Bf2 that couldn't hit ####)

Some sort of ground based robot thing.

And Dice's general manager confirmed CommROSE for PC version :pickle: Also looks like BC2 style squad spawning (can spawn on any squad member). Wonder what responsibilities/perks this leaves for the squad leader......

Should get a lot more info this week

there's also a vid that shows a co-op mission on the PS3. Looks pretty fun.

Gotta love Steam's homepage being a gigantic banner for Modern Warfare 3. I'm sure that's not a coincidence. I think EA is wrong here.

ugh, Killcam is IN on normal mode (not hardcore) :wall:

Seriously.....WHY?????

Bf2 was so great without it.

First bit of bad news in a few days, so we'll live.

Other stuff.... (copied from another site)

-there is a hardcore game setting and an infantry only game setting

-mortars are deployable, so no binoculars to call in 60mm rounds

-kill cam in normal mode

-flags will have names and a letter

-fact sheet is not necessarily finished (derp)

-BF3 won't ship with LAN mode because they want to release it in a cheat free environment

-A-10 and AH-6J Littlebird are both available in MP

-fly ceiling is really high in BF3, but you'll lose power the higher you go

-they're still evaluating squad communication (communication between different squads)

-helicopters have no auto stabilization, they're not like BC2 and not like BF2, I'm guessing somewhere in between

-they haven't confirmed a battlerecorder BUT they are "working" on it

-new spawn system is not necessarily the final version, if people ##### enough about it they will change it

I personally have no problem with Killcam. I kind of like it on both ends, since you see where the killer is and can go for him. Of course, as the killer, I will at times quick change direction to throw them off or make it my goal to take them down again as they come for you. Nothing says fun like gunning down the guy that comes specifically for you 3 times in a row.

Just not a fan. IMO, it lowers the need for map awareness. If guys want to camp, let them camp.in other news, they've made changes to 3d spotting due to community feed back. Here's an explanation to the new system (which sounds good)"So, a soldier in direct Line of Sight that is spotted will have a 3d red marker. If he moves behind cover or concealment, including vegetation, the 3d red marker will disappear. He will always be on the minimap. Vehicles are always fully 3D spotted, and LOS does not apply since they are larger more important targets with less threats (and it plain did not work to have jets flying around who couldn't see the tank you spotted for him to take out). This lets you essentially "nudge" your buddy to tell him about a target, or point out a sniper on a hill you see but cannot engage (with your shotgun for example). But it prevents players from using 3D spotting as a wall hack.Additionally, the primary motivator for the change is that 3D spots that you cannot see are not threats. We noticed that players would focus on 3D spots over everything else, meaning they would ignore people in line of sight. It's far less confusing when the 3D spot on a soldier can only be seen if you can see the soldier."

Less than 2 months until release :pickle:

Starting next week, I'll begin serious scouring various websites for deals on the parts I want for my new PC.

I'll probably pick up everything but the Vid card, motherboard and processor. Obviously gonna want until right before release for the card and there is a chance that Intel releases their new processors in October.

battleblog 8

Just talks about some of the details of weapon customization. Nothing we didn't know already.

I didn't realize they removed the ability to spawn off any squadmate. That sucks. I like the fact that even in games with random teammates, I'll get three roaming spawn points -- well really, two and one guy hiding in a bush two miles away.
See, I'm not sure that part of the article is accurate. In the alpha (when squad spawning worked, which it usually didn't) the squad leader could spawn on any squad member, but the squad members could only spawn on the leader. In my opinion, this system was ok, but not great. I'd prefer the Bf2 system (squad leader spawn only, 6 man squads).I absolutely hate spawn on anybody. It makes it practically impossible to kill a squad full of medics, and I think it was part of what made defending flags in conquest so pointless in BC2. (other reasons were that there was not enough "ticket" bleed and no important flags where team assets you couldn't afford to lose such as Tanks, choppers or commander assets spawned)If they are going to make it "spawn on anybody" they shouldn't allow to spawn on someone who is under fire. I think you should have to 5 seconds without taking damage before someone can spawn on you. I absolutely hate when I fire a burst that I know will finish someone off, hit the reload button and die because one of their teammates popped in at the very last second.

TLEF, Newegg has had some amazing DDR3 RAM deals of late. $50 for 8 GB sets. 2 of those and you have 16 GB of high speed RAM for $100. G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM That one is today only for $50.
I was actually planning on PM'ing you.Is DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) kinda the go-to RAM choice right now?

I know there are a bunch of different speeds and setups, but there aren't a lot of great resources (as opposed to toms hardware for processors, MB's and vid cards) to determine what kind to get.

RAM and SSD ordered. Less than $300 including taxes and shipping
:hifive:Yeah that is great RAM. You gotta go Sandy Bridge, unless of course the new AMD chips are just amazing. They release in September. Then the new AMD 7000 series is dropping in September/early October.

Yeah, it did really well they tested all the various 2X4 Gig sets at Toms Hardware a little while back. Thanks for the heads up. They just posted all the specs of the next gen of Sandy Bridge chips yesterday. (again, at Tom's). I'll have to do some research to see just how much better they are than the 2500K. At this point, they're just saying they're gonna be released Q4. Will probably happen too late to help me out.

Ok Mad Cow / TLEF, since you have both been looking at this stuff lately - this RAM look ok or should I look elsewhere? I have 6GB OCZ 1600 right now, and was thinking of moving to 12GB (been running 4-5GB usage lately, and been thinking about doing some video editing soon.) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231225G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit

I'm a little concerned about filling the other 3 slots, since the only problems I read about with my Mobo when I bought it was when it was full (all 6 slots) of RAM. And yes, it is tri-channel,

There have been a ton of 8 GB sets (2X4) lately. Why not get 16 GB and fill only 4 slots?

shell shocked deal on the SSD i ordered the other day

:wall:

So, in the 5 days since I ordered this (arrived yesterday) the price dropped $36.

I emailed newegg to ask if they would credit me the amount. Not optimistic, but i figured I'd give it a shot. I've ordered parts for 4 whole computers from them, but tons of other miscellaneous items. I'd hope they'd be willing to credit me a measly $36 when they've got another 1K or so coming down the pipeline from me in the next month or so...

this is a great buy for another looking to add an SSD. Toms hardware named it best SSD in the $250 category and its going for $170 today.

If they say no, I at least hope the response is quick, so i can order one at this price and return the one i bought.

I'm pretty sure you MUST fill it using triple channel memory. Dual-channel doens't work. There are advantages to triple channel, but purchasing isn't one of them because you have to get 3 sticks. I could look at 3x4GB - GSkill 12GB (3x4GB) which would give me 12GB if I can't fill all 6 slots, and 18GB if I can. And it's only $15 more than the 3x2GB sticks...hmmm.

I used a joystick (not gamepad) and it was much easier to control. Only problem was having to clear a spot for the joystick. When you get out it's a pain because the joystick was too close to my keyboard and mouse.

Just pulled the trigger on my entire new PC minus the video card. (I'll use my Radeon 5850 until right before Bf3 releases and then buy a card then).

After careful consideration, I decided to buy a new case (despite spending way too much money on my last one). Did it for a few reasons....

1) I didn't want to go through the hassle of ripping the whole thing apart to put the new hardware in

2) A few of the front USB ports are messed up

3) I would actually like to have an extra PC hanging around for a few special occasions (mainly streaming games live for the NCAA tournament, which i run 4 TV's in my living room for)

4) Older case is missing some features that make installation easier (mainly a cut out for behind the CPU to allow for easier heat-sink install)

Also held off on buying another copy of windows 7, as it appears that the clean install with an upgrade version trick (

) works well. And if not, I may be able to use my dad's vista disk to install vista and then install windows 7 upgrade over that. So I ordered the following.....

ASROCK p67 MB Got great reviews, has all the features i want and the price was right.

Intel Sandy Bridge 2500k processor (no surprise here)

2 WD caviar black 1 TB HD's

corsair enthusiast series 750watt PS (wanted to go modular, but this was a great deal)

zalman CPU cooler (install on my last one was tough, but the performance is awesome)

and putting everything in this case

All up, I'm probably about $100 over what i wanted to spend (mostly because I bought the case) but I have about $40 in mail in rebates (which i've actually had success receiving in the past) and i still may hear back from them on the $36 on the SSD i bought the other day.

Now just need to wait until october to see how the video card market shakes out.

edit: they're giving me a $37 gift card for the difference on the shell shocker deal. 1 time exception. The guy originally said no, but went on hold for a minute (my guess to check with his supervisor and check my fairly extensive order history) and eventually caved.

So that should come in handy when i order my vid card.

Nice to see you in BF again GS - as you can see, I still die a lot. You should look up the vent info if you don't still have it, first post maybe?

These are actually both really good points. I'll have to give you that.

Battlefield n00b question...actually I don't even own any version...

The squad-based stuff is cool, but what I really enjoy most is solo play, like "Free For All" multiplayer where it's every man for himself. Does the BF series offer this mode?

Any PC guys have any newer stand alone sound cards?

I was planning on just pulling my 10 year old Audigy G ZS 2 out of the current rig. (or maybe just using on-board depending on how it sounds)It has 7.1 support and still works. Probably going to buy a decent headset (since my little speakers obviously aren't 7.1) but i just can't see the reason to spend $100+ on a new card.

A Gator Shawn sighting?
Yup
I generally hate the game, but I decided to give it a good night of play to see if I could get over my initial feeling that "ZOMG EVERYONE IS HAX!" that I get when I play and get owned repeatedly. I did pretty well last night I think, getting the hang of it. Would be fun to play in a team again.I'm just playing World of Tanks in a competitive clan. I led a team to a top 8 finish in a tournament of 128 teams a few days ago and my clan went to Russia all expenses paid to play in a tournament this summer ( I should add that it was only 8 people who went and I had only been in the clan a few days and thus wasn't part of it). Hard to find time at night to get into BC2.I still had the VENT config in my vent, so I can get on, I'll try tomorrow night.

Looks like they've gone back to not counting a death as a death if you are revived.

It wasn't like that in the alpha and won't be in the beta, but it will be at release.

As a total K/D ratio whore :bag: I'm obviously a fan of this...

Philosophically I hate this*, but at least now it won't be so bad when some dip#### revives you in the middle of a firefight.I just popped this game back into my PS3 a month or so ago, and got hooked all over again. I missed all the new rush maps besides Laguna Presa, so Harvest Day, White Pass, Oasis, etc. are all new to me (I know some of these were previously Conquest maps), and it's like playing a new game. And there are still a ton of players in the 10s and 20s, so it's not like it's just 50s running around. This game has had a great shelf life.* Edit: Easy for me to say, since I'm happy with any KDR near or above 1.0.
