I thought Cobalt was to abandon all of Los Angeles and terminate its residents.

I thought it was terminate the people who were locked up in that detention center/hospital, not everybody including the safe zone. nerds? somebody watch it again a few times and tell us.

We're Alive is my favorite zombie media, a podcast with four seasons. It was also set in downtown LA and the whole place (people, electricity, etc) cleared out pretty quick. Must just be hard to write that many people in a civilized setting falling through.

It would interest me to see someone tackle the topic, which is one reason I was looking forward to Fear as much as I was.

With a fast moving infection like World War Z or 28 Days Later, I think humanity would be screwed. But a slow one like TWD I bet we'd fare pretty well against. The worst part of the TWD zombie being that any normal death can result in a zombie would mean people would never be completely safe in any setting. But as long as people learn what is going on and get organized before the zombie numbers are overwhelming, I would think the zombies could be held off for a long time/indefinitely unless something goes really wrong. Those surprise deaths just wouldn't generate enough zombies quickly enough to take down defended areas so long as they showed any level of intelligence about their defenses and behavior. Most surprise deaths the zombie won't even make it out of their home, and people would be cautious about going in if no one inside is responding normally first.

Keeping people going to work would probably be the hardest part at first. But I'd think the people who provide the important services like electricity and water would realize their role and you could probably get them on board after the initial wave of fear was replaced with understanding. I also think the idiots who want to turn anarchist would be an issue which is something Fear was good in showing, but I think again that can be managed. They would probably cause a fair portion of however many zombies get created early on and have to be dealt with, in part through distracting the security forces that could have been dealing solely with zombies.

The more I think about it the more I think you might need some kind of more active infection to bring down society with a TWD type ZA. Like drinking infected water could kill you the same as a zombie bite can. Or any other big scale kill off, like a flu pandemic that kills enough people off the zombie numbers become unmanageable.

Don't remember exactly what was said, but, it wouldn't make sense to take the time to go around kill all the residents when they are in retreat.

I know the writers aren't that smart, but, it wouldn't make sense for the orders to include killing the residents first.

Show is really bad, can't believe they didn't even actually show anything in this show, such as major decisions being made that led to society breaking down or the continuing of society breaking down. Instead, we just go from hey there is a zombie to skip forward one episode and the military already killed almost everyone, yet there aren't any swarms/walkers to be seen, and presumably after next episode it will just be the west-coast walking dead, except with characters no one cares about? The writers should be ashamed as the pretty much had a slam dunk show here and failed miserably.

Yes, was looking forward to seeing how society tried to combat it, etc. But it didn't take long to see they weren't going to handle it in any kind of reasonable way.

The media aspect of it being a great example. Cases in 5 states, hospital workers know what they have to do with dead bodies. People hear "something" is going on enough to keep their kids home and not go to work so the power fails and society crumbles... yet a salacious detail like "people are turning cannibal" doesn't survive the rumor mill? How do you have enough cases for people to know something is going on, but not have a zillion youtube videos of zombies recorded by idiot teenagers who don't know how to turn their phone when recording video?

We had 2 cases of Ebola here in the US and you couldn't hardly find anything else on a news channel. Doesn't matter if their world doesn't know what zombies are. People are turning rabid and EATING each other isn't news worthy? It would dominate the news, there would be no way it could be covered up once a few cases happened.

Was really hoping to see how we'd combat something like this and how it could play out that we still lose. Instead... ugh.

I'm with you there. There would be no way this didn't get out sooner. Plus, it seems the doctors and nurses were brought in on it too. Can you imagine that they wouldn't tell their friends/spouses/lovers about it?

Also thought the electricity going out so quickly was kind of hokey. Guess a zombie or two got stuck in the gears.

I told myself that they took down the servers somehow. Hopefully that's a thing.

SImple. You are thinking logically. The overwhelming majority do not think logically in normal every day scenarios, let alone during a zombie apocalypse. Society crumbles.

Human termination, if they couldn't take the people with them for some reason, would be to leave them pistols and let them decide for themselves how they want to go. There is no logical reason to take the time to terminate people if they are under evac.

I agree the overall objective for the military is to stop, contain and eliminate the zombies(virus) even at the cost of real people's lives. Lets look at what we know:

1- Safe Zones approximately 12 small zones inside the greater LA of population 10 milion.
2- The directive in the unsafe zones was to kill everything.
3- The directive in the safe zones was to test, monitor and quarantine to ensure the safe zones are zombie/virus free.

This all makes perfect sense if you are trying to achieve the overall objective for LA. But, then the Colbat order came down so you have to assume the overall objective wasn't being met. If you are under evacuation orders what does the killing of, few hundred maybe, out of the 10 MILLION people zombies accomplish? Especially when you're just going to carpet bomb the area after you leave anyway? For the overall objective it would be a waste of time and effort; that's why they are evacuating.

To me it's just another bad plot device for the writers; the evil military. You want one of the battalions going rouge under a crazy commander given the apocalyptic nature they are in? Sure, but not the entire military, from the top. Humane termination? The writers just want to drive home that the military is killing people. Dumb.

We actually have no idea if people fled the city, or if they were killed by the military, or killed by rioters, or turned into zombies, or anything else as the show didn't actually show anything. Also even using your assumption that people fled there is no way 10 million people just casually fled the city then TWD happens and the only people left are a few hundred in each safe zone (every portrayal so far shows this as a small neighborhood, a few hundred people to thousand tops).

i watched the last episode again last night. Its even better than i thought the first time through. there's so many levels of distrust here, that's the common theme through the entire episode.

when you watch the scene where the nat'l guard guys go into the library and get ambushed, you're led to believe that they got smoked or overrun by zombies. However, given that the one dude says "he's not coming" referring to the major, it could also have been a planned ambush on his own troops. I mean in the end times situation they are in, it wouldn't be inconceivable for a power tripping military guy to try to set up a kingdom where he's the top dog ala the Governor, who murders, rapes, tortures at will to achieve his ends. He can't do that in the Nat'l Guard structure, so lets thin the herd and set up my own cartel. I'm not so sure the Major is dead and I suspect we'll be running into his group in season 2.

we're at the point now where society has completely broken down, but the main characters don't yet understand it fully. The last episode will show the final realization.

No, it wasn't until day 3 that the footage from the shooting on the freeway gets circulated and Chris goes to the protest of the shooting of a homeless man, then the night of day 3 the riots break out. You really don't watch the show do you.

They are killing everything in the unsafe zone because the are trying to contain and eliminate the virus. You can't contain it if you don't have a perimeter. They kept people from leaving.

Yep, mainly because I'm interested in the potential of what the show could be, but knowing it will never be.
