***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (1 Viewer)

What if Forge split with all of those guys and replaced them with new Ghouls, including a woman on bass?
Yeah, who knows now. Anything is possible. A lot of these European bands like to use stage names. The fact that people wonder about their identities makes it a good gimmick. If they get various musicians to play anonymously, then I guess it's an even better gimmick. Anything that makes people talk about them.

They went from a late 90s band based on late 80s death metal (making no money) to coming up with several gimmicks (identity, look, sound) to create a very lucrative career. Good for them. It's not easy to make money in the music business these days.

My wheel right now...not pure metal, some hard rock in there

Ghost

Mastodon

Rival sons

Scorpion child

Crobot

Highly suspect

Red fang

Royal blood

The temperance movement

Tyler Bryant and the shakedown

Foo fighters

Black Keys

The sword

Clutch

So surprised to see the rise in Ghost's popularity.  I was even more surprised when they won a Grammy.

LUCIFER, WE ARE HERE!

Back to the spirit of the thread.  Can I get a ruling on:

WolfMother
No, but they're close.  I still someday need to issue some mea culpas and re-classify some of the bands in this thread.  I can't even remember the ones I have issues with, but there's always a nagging feeling that I blew a few.  I expected 5-10 submissions, not hundreds in one day.  I remember being so overwhelmed between this and work that a few bands submitted, I thought of one song and gave an offhand yes or no without really diving into it.  Several mistakes were made.

Do it! I'd be interested in reading that.

I don't think so either.  Super cool band though.  Find myself listening to them often.

Has anyone else noticed how much live music is being played on cable channels now?  MTV actually has a station dedicated to it I think.  The Eagles of Death Metal were on there the other night.

Apparently the excellent cable channel Palladia is now called MTV Live. They show a ton of live music.

Not metal, but Jools Holland's show is one of the best venues in the world.

They mix those live performances better than some CDs. For example: Muse "Madness"

With the hype here I had to check out the Ghost vids you guys listed and happy I did. Great stuff & I'll definitely check their catalog, but are they really considered death metal? Not what I expected at all.  Did they evolve from 'death' or are you heavier guys easing us in? Nonetheless....thanks!

I am new to Ghost, but the current iteration is not death metal at all.

In fact, they're more hard rock at this point.

Did you watch the Dead Cross video I posted today?
It's funny.  I've always hated Patton, but Lombardo is one of my all time, all-time favorites.  After hearing that, I don't think anything has changed.  I'm gonna give it a few tries before I decide.  Thanks for posting.

Mike Patton is an acquired taste, that's for sure.

Love the stage setup on Jools show. One of the biggest setups I've seen made for TV. Plus you get a real variety of acts.

Definitely. And there's nothing like a live performance to vet real talent. People joked about Passenger's "Let it Go", but long before that was a hit I heard it live on Jools Holland and it blew me away.

You know me well. That part is a little off putting but the guitars make up for it.

Video for a song I mentioned earlier : "Square Hammer" from Ghost.  I defy anyone to listen to this song 3 or more times in a day and not spend the rest of that day singing that chorus.  One of the catchier melodies I've heard in recent years.  I find myself walking around singing it constantly.

This also seems to lead lead right into the video other song I mentioned : "Cirice."  If you like these, they have a LOT more good ones.

WOW ... this reminds me of a mashup of Specimen's "Beauty of Poison" and Sniff n' The Tears "Driver's Seat"

AND THAT'S A DAMN GOOD THING  :headbang:

Gotta love a band that who can weave "clandestine" into their lyrics.

This is a fascinating song.  Sounds almost like a church hymn (or what I imagine one sounds like, I don't attend church and never have.)  The music is so uplifting and the melodies so incredibly pure and soaring, yet the lyrics are entirely Satanic.
Agreed.  Love the melodies and harmonies in that song. Just really clean. It's what drew me over to stuff like this: https://youtu.be/_fupbF1wtLE

just a simple hook w a clean overall sound

Ghost is an interesting band.  They look like a death metal band, but sound like a 70s guitar band.

The intro to this tune sounds like it could have been straight off a Deep Purple album.
i had heard of them, and caught snippets of their music ... they do kinda slide into my love of glam goth (much like Specimen) ... really dig the musicianship, and how well crafted and produced the songs are.

Thanks to you guys that have discussed Ghost.  I saw pictures of them and assumed they were basic death metal.  I am not a fan of death metal since vocals mean a ton to me.  I need singing, melody, and enjoy harmonies.

I listened to a few Ghost songs on Youtube and just ordered the Ghost album that starts with M.  (I am old school and still like to hold music in my hands long enough to dump it onto my computer.  I then put it on my ipad and possibly my phone if it is going to be used during work outs).

And EG, you are right about Square Hammer.  I believe that is on their latest EP which will require another album purchase.  That is one of the best songs I have heard in a while

If you want to listen to heavy music with a singer instead of a cookie monster, check out ex-Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo's band Down.

Lifer is a great song.

Meliora is their most recent LP (and their best, IMO.)  Square Hammer is on the subsequent release, the Popestar EP, which has that song and some covers.  However, I think Square Hammer appears on the "deluxe" release version of "Meliora" as well.

I like Opus Eponymous a lot too.  Infestissumam was less appealing to me, but I know some that swear by it.

I frigging love that tune.

"I'm STARING RIGHT BACK AT MYSELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLF !"

Temptations Wings, Bury Me in Smoke, of course Stone the Crow.  Great album.

Watch a few live videos on Youtube after hearing the studio versions.  They're so technically precise and clear live - it's almost like listening to the album at super-high volume.
