***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (3 Viewers)

Thanks to you guys that have discussed Ghost.  I saw pictures of them and assumed they were basic death metal.  I am not a fan of death metal since vocals mean a ton to me.  I need singing, melody, and enjoy harmonies.

I listened to a few Ghost songs on Youtube and just ordered the Ghost album that starts with M.  (I am old school and still like to hold music in my hands long enough to dump it onto my computer.  I then put it on my ipad and possibly my phone if it is going to be used during work outs).

And EG, you are right about Square Hammer.  I believe that is on their latest EP which will require another album purchase.  That is one of the best songs I have heard in a while
Are you on the square?

Are you on the level?

Are you ready to swear right here, right now before the Devil?

That you're on the square

That you're on the level

That you're ready to stand right here right now....

Right here, right now...

Get ready to have that #### stuck in your head for about the next 2 weeks.

In Week 2 or 3 last season, NBC used "Square Hammer" as a bumper going into commercial on SNF.

Someone in their production crew knows what's up.

Wow.  That would have probably been RIGHT after that EP was released too.
yep. i think the EP came out in Sept (Sept 16...just checked Wiki) and the "Square Hammer" single was on Sept 12.

would love to have been a fly on the wall in that Audio Production meeting:

Sound Guy: "Hey Production Manager! You gotta hear this song, it's freakin' sweet." [plays song]
Production Mgr: "Wow! That rocks. Great sound, super catchy. We should use it this weekend. Who is the band?"
SG: "Band called Ghost. Swedish I think. Big into devil worship. Lead singer dresses like a Satanic Priest."
PM: "Ummmmmmm. Maybe we don't mention that to the guys upstairs."
SG: "Yeah. Prolly not."

Its a blessing for me to get a good song stuck in my head.  I always have a song running through my brain and sometimes it is just an awful song or jingle.

Probably something wrong with you.

:)
I always wondered if most people are "playing" music in their heads 24/7.  I always assumed not because my brothers still break my stones every now and again.  We'll just be walking along and one of them will say : "[EG], who's on stage?"  I always have an answer within 1 second and then they just laugh.

Glad to know there are other weirdos like me out there....  :headbang:

Just got back from my favorite CD store, and this 2008 Soulfly release Conquer is kicking my ###.

[As long as this is now the catch-all metal thread, I thought it'd be fun to post new music purchases

By the way, this CD has one of the best song titles of all time: For Those About To Rot

Touching the Void  :headbang:

BTW - Slayer/Lamb of God last Friday was great.  Terrific show if it comes to your town.  Slayer still has it.  Missed Behemoth because the lure of $1.25 pints at a nearby bar kept us there longer than expected and by the time we realized the show had started, it took too long to get into the venue.

Max is God! Still probably my favorite metal singer, with Halford and Anselmo.

For many months in a row, the first song I'd put on in my car as I left work was Soulfly's Primitive. Great way to start the drive home!

Cowboys From Hell is 27 today.

i can still remember exactly where i was and what i was doing when i first heard that track. flat blew me away.
I went with a van full of friends to see Pantera opening for Suicidal and Exodus and was insisting that we get there in time for Pantera. The album just came out and I think only one other person had heard it. Popped it in the CD player for the ride to the show and everyone was like "holy ####! We gotta get there for this!"

BACK TO THE PRIMITIVE !!  #### ALL YOUR POLITICS !!

maybe the wrong thread, but i'll ask it anyway:

i need help trying to find a video. it was posted in one of the FFA music-type threads a few years back, and i'm pretty sure the song was hard rock/metal. no idea of the band's name, or even what the singer sounded like, but the video had a woman swimming in a lake (?) and she was being chased by two (?) other women who were trying to drown her. might have been some kind of dream sequence. all i can remember is that the video, while macabre, was compelling and the music was good. any ideas?

TIA - here's some 4ARM for your trouble

My 15 year old nephew wants to go to a Slayer show and start a fight.

Having seen the pits at Slayer shows, I recommended we start with a Metallica show.

I need to buy some Cavalera Conspiracy. I hear it jams.

My friend saw that tour. If it's the same one, he calls it The Tour That Killed Suicidal Tendencies. He'd never heard of Pantera, but they opened and blew Suicidal off the stage. No chance to recover from that.

I totally get that, and agree to a point, but ST made some good records after that.  Actually some of my favorite ST came out after that tour.  That could very be why they brought in Trujillo and got all funky and moved a little away from the thrash, though.

How Will I Laugh Tomorrow was one of my favorite records when it came out, but it hasn't really held up well.

Totally. I preferred the early stuff, but nothing wrong with the thrash stuff.

Yeah, I don't know if I'd call it that but to be honest, I really didn't see a lot of ST...lol I made it about halfway through their set and needed a breather from the pit after the first 2. Now that you mention it though, it was kinda the tail end of my being into ST because of the more funky vibe they were getting into and I was going more for extreme stuff like doom and death metal.

We used to do How Will I Laugh in the band I was in back in the day. Fun song to sing!

First Suicidal Tendencies song I ever heard was Institutionalized from the movie Repo Man - and it's still my favorite.

I remember liking Repo Man a lot but haven't seen it in many years. Don't remember the song being in it. A friend of mine had the album and we would just play Institutionalized over and over as probably most kids did when that came out. Really was a groundbreaking song.

When I was in high school (1983-1985), I didn't know anything about punk rock. I was a metalhead. So Repo Man was my first introduction to punk and it remains one of my favorite sentimental recordings.

Saw Pantera open for Wrathchild America at the Airport Music Hall in Pennsylvania (Allentown? Reading? Something like that) in June '91. Pantera ripped my face off. Amazing show. Place was full of skin heads and metal heads. The pit turned into a full on war. 1/3 the crowd was kicked out, but kept fighting in the parking lot. At the end of the show, the place was surrounded by cops. Had passes from the label to meet and greet the bands afterwards, but it had to be cut short, as Dime told us they were told to gtfo or they would be arrested too. Still have my promo cd single of Cowboys from Hell, signed by Dime. Hell of a night!

Craziest show I ever went to was Slayer and Danzig at the Felt Forum (part of MSG) It was ominous from the very beginning and just got worse and worse. People were ripping up the seats and throwing the seat cushions. Skinheads were really out of control and you could just see them picking people off. I didn't venture into the middle of that pit. It was just an all out brawl.

That's spectacular.

I was listening to my favorite Machine Head song the other day (Aesthetics of Hate), and I didn't even know until last week that the song is about Dimebag.

I've seen a lot of pits, but the only pit that really scared me was Slayer.

Just looked it up and here's a cool article on that night
