***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (1 Viewer)

One of those bands that just keeps cranking out great record after great record.  You can put their new stuff up against anything they did earlier.  Plus they tour a lot.  I feel the same way about Overkill.
One of the best shows ever was priest megadeth testament on the painkiller..holy wars....souls of black tour in like 1991...

I know it's officially determined as not-metal, but just dropped 10yo floppinho off at first day of Zep at his school of Rock. Of course the little nimrod wants to play on stairway.

1st two songs he's on (drums): black dog, misty mountain hop.

when I heard they were doing zep this term, first thought was f-yes. there are some seriously talented kids in this outfit, especially on guitar, bass (and of course boy-wonder on drums... along with 4 other kids on drums).

but the problem is always the singing. they're all taking lessons for their instruments, but I don't think any of them do for singing... and it shows. floppinho does his best, and loves singing- but it got painful with Sabbath.

I thought it was coming out on the 22nd.  What do they do, release it on YouTube/whatever first then let everyone get it?  Its still not available on amazon.
that's my fault re: release date. i saw the vid on YT, and saw "released 9/14/17" and figured it was out across all platforms.

apologies.

Non-metal musical thought of the day:

"To listen is an effort, and just to hear is no merit. A duck hears also."
~ Igor Stravinsky

Glad this thread was bumped. Anyone here like The Great Old Ones? Continuing an odd recent trend of quality metal coming from France... these guys are talented. Atmospheric metal in the vein of early Isis and Deafheaven.

Don't know them. Gojira's singer said that France has an excellent metal scene, but I am pretty ignorant about the bands.

Anybody else a fan of these guys?

Byzantine

Some of the riffs these guys have will get you going for sure. Not a big fan of the vocals though but it doesn't really bother me much.

Yes, and the vocals do not bother me either.  Then again, almost no vocals bother me - I, unlike many, have no problem with the so-called "Cookie Monster" vox.

As long as we have angry teenage boys, we will have death metal.
I told my wife the other day that one of the reasons I'm still listening to metal and going to metal concerts is a part of me understands that all my snobby, elitist musician relatives would absolutely loathe it.

I just recently acquired a split 7" of Converge's Runaway with Dropdead's Paths Of Glory.

Interesting stuff. Apparently they call Converge HC Punk?

Sorry, that's metal.

Yeah!

Punk & Metal have been merged ever since Lemme sang with Wendy O. back in the 80's.

I'm almost with you on the cookie monster part but I do have to be able to make out a few lyrics every now and then and with some of the death bands that tends to get very tough at times.Almost always love the music side of those though so I usually stick around to hear them out.

I don't mind the cookie monster vocals at all. What I can't stand are the bands that are extremely heavy with intense vocals and all of a sudden break into this melodic, clean sounding chorus and totally take me out of the song. I think the first band I remember doing that was Killswitch Engage. Never liked them.

Napalm Death is one of my all-time favorite bands, so I agree. That said, when I think of the metal bands that I connect with most on a gut level, it's the bands like Judas Priest or Dio. I think actual singers just are musically more interesting.

Killswitch Engage are an amazing band. But yeah, it's totally not metal to get all emotional in the middle of a thrash song.
