:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Jesus, I've never understood the appeal of cookie-monster metal, even when it came out in the '90's. I see it hasn't changed much.

I wonder how self aware these people are, do they see the caricature nature of what they're doing?
Agree with you here.  lots of different tastes in music out there but some I don't get at all.

Sounds like you might lean more towards Power Metal. Some great songs from Rainbow (with Dio) like Kill the King and Stargazer. Maybe even some Deep Purple songs too. Obviously, there's Iron Maiden. Old Scorpions songs like Steamrock Fever and Sails of Charon. Queensryche songs like Queen of the Reich and Warning Other bands that might fit the mold but I never really followed were Helloween and Manowar
Listened to keeper of seven keys by helloween during my workout yesterday.   That album never gets old to me.

The guitar lines/melodies in "Nemesis" are some of the best I have ever heard.  I get not liking the vocals - that #### isn't for everyone, but that is a truly incredible song and features some of the best lead guitar playing I have ever heard.

One question about the cookie monster vocals. When attempting to sing along(when you can make out the words of course which is my biggest hurdle)are you supposed to sing in the same tone as the singer aka should I growl or sing it normal?Only seen a couple bands that fall into this category and I don't really remember WTF I did.

I've never been a huge metal fan (apart from some Judas Priest tunes), but I revisited E5150 + The Mob Rules a few days ago, and really like it. Can you folks direct me to similar songs (doesn't have to be Sabbath/Dio)?
The Mob Rules is a great album. Saw that tour a million years ago in the 80s. Since you like that one, I'll assume you like a really talented singer. So for newer bands, you might enjoy The Darkness, Dragonforce, Ghost, and Rival Sons.

I don't much care about the lyrics when I'm listening to cookie monster vocals. But when I was listening to Napalm Death the other day, I would occasionally growl along with Barney. So growl.

Real singer = much deeper emotional connection to the listener.
Cookie Monster = much heavier.

I'm already a big Rival Sons fan, I didn't really consider them metal. I'll listen to those others too - any songs in particular that best represent them? Thanks!

Rival Sons are rock, not metal. Still good, though. I don't know a lot about them, but they opened for Black Sabbath and they rocked. The other bands I mentioned are all good, but I don't know them well enough to list particular songs. While Phil Anselmo isn't a great singer, his band Down rocks. Check it out

Well, 2018 is already shaping up to be a great concert year for me.

In addition to the Machine Head show in March, I'm going to see Nile open for Soulfy in Berkeley in May.

:headbang:

Love this thread. Another band I've heard of but never listened to. I truly do not understand the growling (although kinda sexy from a woman in a Linda Blair-Exorcist way), but EG nails it - I love the playing on this.

Sounds like some good shows.  Nile is one of those bands that are too much for my old ### though.

I see our Lost in Vegas boys did an Opeth song.  "where did that come from??"

Not the song I would start somebody new to the band on, but interesting review as usual.

Yeah, growling grindcore isn't my thing. But I love Max Cavalera's music, so I'm stoked about Soulfly.

Have to totally agree here. The vocals are one thing and for some they completely dismiss bands solely for that reason but people really are missing out on some great music and especially with Arch Enemy. The way they can write music it comes off as a very heavy/melodic sound that just kicks ### in so many ways.Nemesis is a prime example of that with how well the musicianship is on display in all areas of the band.I'm a huge guitar nerd and pay very close attention to the solo's bands throw in and these without question are top notch.Opeth is another band that quickly comes to mind as another band people tend to shy away from because of the vocals but again they really are missing out on fantastic music.

Now mix in cookie monster vocals and an average band behind it and I will pass most of the time.To me I listen to metal for the musicianship and arrangement of the songs that get the blood pumping and am willing to forgive them if the vocals aren't my cup of tea.

Glad you liked it.Shellfire for me is the best song on the album but you really can't go wrong with any track on it.Worlds Torn Asunder is another good album from them if you get a chance to check it out.

They have that rep, but now with the last few albums and the other non-growl songs they have, I am guessing only about 1/2 their songs are growly now, and even them only have it for a part of the song as they go back and forth.

Haven't gotten very far with the metal remedial education yet. I did listen to Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules and some of the 70's Ozzy Sabbath. I find I like Mob Rules best. I think its the combination of the production quality, Dio's voice vs. Ozzy's, and Appice's drumming vs. Ward's. Iommi is a brilliant guitarist, and he and Butler are such prolific song writers.

Your education is working.

Care to unpack this a bit?

The 30 Greatest Thrash Bands of All Time

Spin magazine. Good list, imo. Happy to see Sepultura at #3. Surprised to see Tankard even though they are in at #30. I was a fan. A little early to put Power Trip on it. There are definitely a few I need to revisit. Thankfully no click bait too, just a one page list.

There are some blasts from the past on that list, and a few I haven't heard of, so that's gives me something to do.

I like seeing Testament up there, but still think Megadeth is too low.  Maybe not peak vs. peak, but I think they have won the longevity and overall quality body of work over Metallica.

Agree on Megadeth. I always preferred them to Metallica but it's obvious who the top spot belongs to. I would put Megadeth ahead of Testament but I've never really been a Testament fan.

Big Testament fan. Interesting that for someone who can live with some death and black metal vocals, I give them a higher mark for Chuck Billy on vocals, over such odd sounding fellows like Dave Mustaine & Axl Rose. Great guitar sound too, which to me is the backbone of metal as a whole.

the Misfits Earth A.D./Wolf's Blood deserves mention here, preceding Metallica (who invented the thrash genre, according to that list) and influencing them to the Nth.

Solid list even if I would debate a few of the rankings. The first thing that stood out to me was the line that Metallica invented thrash,I don't agree with that at all and in fact I would say Exodus(whom Metallica got Hammett from)would be in the running as one of the first bands but if the point is the fist popular band I can see that part.

Megadeth is way too low at 7.

I always had a hard time nailing down exactly what Suicidal Tendencies were and think they are ranked a tad high here even though I did enjoy a good bit of stuff they did.

Love the inclusion of Annihilator since I'm a huge Jeff Waters fan.Never,Neverland and Alice in Hell were fantastic albums.

Power Trip seems like a throw in here to give them props but top 30?Maybe one day but not yet.

I guess my top 10 would be

1-Slayer

2-Megadeth

3-Metallica

4-Testament

5-Anthrax

6-Kreator

7-Sepultura

8-Exodus

9-Dark Angel

10-Nuclear Assault

Any list that that even just makes mention of the cro mags is cool with me ( assuming they're referring to The Age of Quarrel)

Nah, Give me Terrell Davis over Eddie George.

The hip hop guys are back, watching Metallica - One.  It's fun early when they're talking about how it's not aggressive, when we know what's coming.  I love their reactions - that song blows people away, we're just used to it.

ETA: Oh balls, I'm watching their reaction to Danzig-Twist of Cain, and it's killing me right off the bat - they're just laughing at him.

That song was so controversial at the time....truth be told its a freaking masterpiece. the last half of the song is such money. I will never forget when it came out and the stoners/metal heads were cool with it at first...but then the video came out and its #1 on Mtv and all the dorky ### jocks and preps are signing it in the cafeteria kinda drove us nuts and there was a backlash towards the band that extended into the black album. It really was the beginning of the end for metallica from being a huge cult band and into the greatest metal band of all time. and its still not close, even with the dreck of load/reload/st,anger

agreed.

AJFA was a good album, it just lacked bass (as all fans remember). it could have been great: And Justice For Jason

i think the backlash began with The Black Album, because it had not one but two ballads. Metallica had been known for so long to metal fans as the band who succeeded despite little to zero AOR/MTV airplay, and then they changed direction to a more "blusey" (not sure if that's the right descriptor) sound from thrash, added in some slow/mid-tempo songs, and was then immediately adopted by the jocks/preps/frat-guy/girls en masse. call it going mainstream, call it selling out, but whatever happened was great for their success as a band. though as a fan since the Kill "Em All days, i've held on to a slight sense of betrayal since TBA.
