A word of advice: make sure you don't get stuck at the end of the inevitable run on left-handed one-out specialists! Thanks everyone for all the great reading material on a slow day....

Getting a lefty power bat at catcher is nice (especially if it fits your park). Obviously not many people's number 1 catcher, but that doesn't mean it's a bad pick.
May not be anyone's number one catcher, but his numbers will match up against any number one catcher out there. Left-handed is just a bonus.
For sure...not many catchers win 2 MVP awards. Have a feeling this might start a run.

He's no Crash Davis. Crash Davis scored on and off the field. Even though Susan Sarandon in kind of a #####.

LOL...as funny as that sounds using Spocks logic of the extra lefty bats it'll proboably be a nice thing to have somewhere on your 10 man staff.edited to clarify...not the 1 out specialist but the closer/set-up type guys.

Too bad he could never do it in "The Show."

If you can't get Rickey Henderson ... get this guy:

I'll select ...

4.08 Tim Raines, CF

Switch hitter, too.

Underated. Terribly. That is what Montreal will... err, did do to a player.

Sticking to DVBD, I will draft the best catcher of all time, who will double as my team's hairstylist:

Mike Piazza

Fixed. Piazza and Cobb wouldn't get along well.

Lets get ahold of a rep. from Team Pickles and keep this moving. Could see being done w/ rd. 5 before the weekend...putting us on an ideal pace to finish in roughly a month.

I really did not know where Piazza would fit. His offense is obviously unparalleled. Tempered by the era he is hitting in, but without question the best hitting catcher ever.I believe his defense is pretty solid, with the glaring weakness of his arm. Outside of that, he has decent hands and calls a good game.

Better late than never(meetings  )

George Sisler

Ty Cobb once refered to Sisler as "the nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer."

AL MVP 1922

#16 career batting average(.340)

#42 career Hits

#79 Career Total bases

#82 Career Stolen Bases(Led the AL in stolen bases 4 times)

Career OBP .379(.390+ six times)

Hit over .400 twice

Hit .340+ nine times

Held record for most hits in a season from 1920 until this past season.

42 game hit streak in 1922

226 sacrafice hits(shows his unselfish nature)

Many sources claim that he was a "slick fielding first baseman" and one "of the best fielding first baseman of his time".

Also pitched briefly and beat Walter Johnson head to head.

He generally grades out to an A defender with A range, much higher than catchers of a previous era, but similar to other modern stars.

Everyone in here up to lastresort, we can make a run here.

I'm taking off until next Thursday and haven't had a chance to do the research. I'll make my pick(s) then. Make sure you have your lists ready so we don't have to wait next Thursday when I get back.See you in week, fellas! :pics:

Cool. I'll bring one too. Do you like Eskimos?

My team needs a lead off guy to get on for my boppers. He one of the last viable 2B in this thing.

Plus he gets mad hits....

2B ROD CAREW

He was the MVP in 1977, made 18 straight all-star games, had a .328 career BA with 3053 hits. He also stole a bunch of bases

Still recovering from the Frank Thomas selection.. :rotflmao: C'mon, man.. he's a friggin' DH. That's the real knock on him, besides his acting like a petulant child all the time. I think he should have to sit on the bench and watch.

Nipsey selects:

HANK GREENBERG

Hammerin' Hank had the best season a Tiger has ever had by anyone not name Ty Cobb. In 1938, he hit a team record 58 homeruns, which up until the late 1990's, was good for fourth best all time. He drove in 146 runs, and led the league in walks with 119.

Greenberg's 1935 numbers were also phenomonal. He won the MVP, hit 36 homeruns, and he had 170 RBIs and 389 total bases. All of these marks led the league.

His career numbers are equally impressive. He walked more times then he struck out (852 vs. 844), and has a career .412 OBP. His career 1.017 career OPS is the seventh best all time. Probably the only thing keeping him from being among the best ever was his missing all but 12 games in 1936 because of injury, and missing almost four years because of World War II. In all, he only played nine seasons where he played more then 100 games, but still managed to rack up 331 homeruns and 1,276 RBIs.

I almost took him with my last pick even though he's a lousy fit for my team/park.Great value.
