Official Game 163 Thread (1 Viewer)

My buddy was at the game and said quite a few people started leaving for their cars after the Padres got two runs in the top of the 13th. Guess it's been awhile.

So why again didn't Bud Black load the bases with no outs. Instead he just issues on IBB? Made no sense.
 I was wondering the same thing. What is gained by only putting a runner on first with no outs with a man on 3rd? Loading them up would have at least put home into play on a grounder, and any deep ball is going to score the run anyway.

only thing I can think of is that he didn't want to walk home the game-winner...but then why issue the first walk to begin with.

I wouldn't have loaded them though.

He walked Helton a lefty facing the right handed Hoffman so that he would at least get righty/righty matchup with Carroll.

Correct. As someone else stated, walking the bases loaded means if the pitcher falls behind 2-0 he most likely has to groove a fastball down the middle which can easily score the winning run on a sac fly. I think he made the right call...

No offense to the Colorado faithfull, but I've seen regular season games in Philadelphia the last week (not Sunday) that had 5x as much crowd noise and energy than that game last night. Maybe it was the extra innings that tired them out, I don't know.

Cheering at high altitude is tough

It's tough being "faithful" here in Colorado. This ownership sucks. I kept waiting and waiting for the real Rockies to show up and I think a lot of fans have as well. While winning that many down the stretch you just had to think that sooner or later just the bounce of the ball or call of an ump would cost them a win somewhere along the line and they would be out. Just a lot of nervous apprehension overall. I guess the ones leaving in the 13th thought that Trevor Hoffman of 500 saves would mow down the Rockies - I wouldn't have left but I can see why.

By the way, what shouldn't go unremarked on was some truly horrific outfield defense by both teams...

Guys took Bobby Abreu-esque routes to fly balls all night long...

I counted like 3-4 extra base hits that should have been caught by competent outfield play...

Both teams are pretty pathetic. Luckily the less pathetic of the two won.

The problems for the Padres were in center field and that was because Cameron was out.

Bobby Abreu won a gold glove. (Guess that goes to show how pathetic that award is)

Yeah, but he is an awful outfielder...He is so scared of the wall that he takes this loping, circuitous route towards all fly balls...Bobby Abreu apparently believes that the shortest distance between two points goes around the Cape of Good Hope

You're preachin' to the choir. I got to watch Abreu play RF for years here in Philly.

For what it's worth, I imagine they didn't walk Carroll to fill the bases as well because Hawpe was up after him. After they took Atkins out, Carroll became the identifiable weak spot in the middle of all those big hitters. They had been pitching around Hawpe all night. No way they were going to invite him up to the plate with the bases juiced and no outs.
