***Official*** Green Bay Packers Offseason Thread, v. 2014 (2 Viewers)

Now reading that sources are saying they will only keep 2 QBs.

I don't get it.

After last year, why not have the option for 3...if my numbers are ok above, they seem to have the room to keep 3.

Probably keep 5 TEs or something instead (which makes zero sense to me).

Tolzien won't make it to the PS...and, as we learned last year, Flynn just seems to fit well both in the system on the field and with Rodgers on the sidelines and in the film room.

Im not sure Tolzien is ready to be the guy yet.
Nobody seems to know if it will be 1 or 2 QBs. Predictions seem to be all over the place. Speculation I've read is that they could cut Flynn and he'd be available later as he is seen around the league as only a success in GBs system.
Seems that is a big risk after he again looked competent last year.

I would think a team like St. Louis would snatch Flynn up.

NFLN said, about 30 minutes ago, that its "not serious".....for what thats worth....

10 players in on the Lynch TD? Why am I not surprised. The Packers needed to broom that entire defensive staff two years ago. McCarthy showing a serious lack of holding his coaches accountable.

McCarthy needs to go!! He got hot one post season and that is keeping his job. He has not held players or coaches accountable for there actions or productivity. He is over rated as a play caller and has been over matched come playoff time. Ted needs to clean house with the staff and see if he can find someone that is creative and holds staff and players accountable.

Wow...some people are quite spoiled.

I can see being on Capers case...but calling for McCarthy and TT is laughable at this point.

McCarthy has had the fortune of having Favre and Rodgers as his QBs, which has masked the fact that he isn't that good of a coach. Look at how they fell apart last year without Rodgers. Sure, many teams would struggle when having to go with their backup QB, but a healthy Rodgers pretty guarantees 10+ wins every season nowadays. Think about 2011 when they had a historically bad defense, yet still went 15-1, mainly because of Aaron Rodgers. I am not saying McCarthy is a bad coach, but he isn't anything special, IMO. He looked completely overmatched by Carroll the other night.

Well looks like Capers dodging being fired for the 3rd justified year in a row is paying off in spades, now that he finally has a healthy defense and quality players to work with. I'm sure McCarthy will tell us all he'll fix this and adjust accordingly... Go Pack!

Really Sno Snuff?? Look at the talent he has had and the lack of results come playoff of time and against top teams. He gets out coached most of the time. Super Bowl run was made when the defense caused turnovers and gave the offense an advantage. Besides that year Mike is 2-5 in the playoffs. Only other time there was a playoff run was Favre's last year and they lost at home to the Giants in Packer weather. He is living off the Super Bowl other wise he is a slightly better version of Sherman. Both lived off beating up the weak division we live in and playing a just over 500 against most of the league.

This team looked scared and unprepared from the start of the game. The game plan was a mess and they did not challenge a Seahawk defense with their best players. Only a couple of down field throws to pressure the defense. Once again there is no screen game wait so ever to make the pass rush think twice, and we saw the offensive genius once again go 5 wide inside the 5 yard line. The media over rates McCarthy as an offensive genius, this team has close to the talent of the Broncos and Saints on offense, but they don't scare teams like the other two. McCarthy doesn't vary his offese couple screen passes, rollout pass plays and combo run routes would give the defense something to think about. He is in love with the offense tilted to the Air Coryell style and this means longer routes and Rodgers in the pocket longer. This could be a disaster unless Sherrod or another tackle steps up with Bulaga out.

Been saying this for 2 years now. McCarthy does not hold his coaches or players accountable for their actions. I was surprised that Daniels was brought off the field after he ran into the punter. He needed to be sat down and scolded for his mistake, it cost the Packers 7 points because of his mistake. Daniels wants to be a leader but he did not show it by making a huge mistake early in the game.

It's one game, yes. But it was the most important game of the season, which Green Bay had months to prepare for. Yet despite assurances from McCarthy that "we're ready", the team #### their pants and rolled around in it on national television (again...). It's one thing to lose against a better team, but this was a top-down embarrassment.

Green Bay may win 10 or more games this year because of Rodgers, but it's become clear they are incapable of achieving anything greater anymore with this coaching staff. I guess if division titles are all that makes you happy, then you are in your Packer golden years. But some of us think this team should be competing for more with what they have to work with right now.

How so? I think the Chicago games may be a little more important.

Yes...really.

A. He would get scooped up in a second.

B. Who are you going to hire that is better?

He is living off of having one of the best winning percentages in football. Is he living off of Rodgers? Sure. Though, I would also put some of Rodgers' success at the feet of McCarthy and his coaching.

As for only a couple of downfield throws...that is what Seattle's defense does...keep it in front of them. Same way Chicago used to always do when their defense was good.

And on one hand you are complaining that there were not longer routes and deep routes...the next you are complaining that he was running longer routes leaving Rodgers back there longer? Which is it?

Only cost them 3 points actually...they held Seattle to a FG after the missed INT and then running into the punter.

I'm not going to say the sky is falling just yet, but I have been calling for Capers head for a couple years now and he still sucks and still should be fired. I also agree McCarthy has had 2 great QB's to cover up his averageness as a coach and play caller. I still think we should get 10 wins, but we can't play like we did Thursday and we better get a replacement for Sherrod who absolutely sucks.

The Packers seem undisciplined and disorganized. That starts at the top. Sherrod has been a train wreck and he's the main backup? The defense had the rep of being soft and looked even softer Thursday. It's almost like watching the final Reid years in Philly in a number of ways. Decent talent, way too sloppy, and living off of a reputation built 5 years prior.

How so? I think the Chicago games may be a little more important.
To winning the division, yes. To winning the Super Bowl, no.I'd gladly give a win against the Bears away for a win Thursday night against Seattle. The Packers can win the division, but they needed that win a few days ago to have that all important tiebreaker and potentially host the most important postseason games at Lambeau.

As far as the coaching staff goes, I think McCarthy is a very good head coach. At this point the defensive issues are what they are and I no longer hold Dom Capers fully responsible for them. I've believed Capers should have been let go two seasons ago, and still do, but McCarthy's decision to keep him puts that burden on him now. Especially since McCarthy's capital letter proclamation that the defense will be improved.

The sky isn't falling and the team will have a very good 2014 season. However, I'm starting to believe the end of Aaron Rodgers' career will follow the arc of Brett Favre, never making enough shirt term moves to maximize the Super Bowl window with him in his prime. Hopefully McCarthy makes the tough choice to replace Capers with someone with some new ideas, hopefully Ted Thompson puts a bit more emphasis on the now in the next 3-4 year stretch, and hopefully Aaron Rodgers stays healthy. I just don't want to look back and see the one Lombardi trophy for Rodgers, like Favre, and play the what if game.

Let some of other team deal with his inability to beat top teams and have undisciplined teams.

First name is Joe Lombardi, he is a great young offensive mind. Lions offense will be tough to beat this year. He has learned from the guy we should have hired Sean Payton. It has nothing with the name this guy will be a top end coach in this league in when given the chance.

They threw a couple of sideline deep balls but some of them were the back should pass. He doesn't test the defense with a straight nine route, that can take the top of them. Nelson or Cobb could have done this on Thursday night. You can leave Rodgers back there for longer routes once he would establish something with some quick slants and combo routes that leave the defense guessing, He is not creative, you can see once inside the 5 there will be one play with a 5 wide set, one play with a running back trying to get a good run straight up the middle. No roll outs or very little play action in that area to put pressure on the defense.

He does have good winning percentage against the overall league. But the top end teams he is not even a 500 coach. Like I said he had one good run otherwise his playoff numbers are a terrible.

Because Sean Payton has had a lot of success after his SB win?

So we should have hired a guy who has done less since winning a SB...as if you all would not be complaining about him now?

BTW...McCarthy often tests teams deep...he didn't against Seattle...probably because of that cover 3 shell they play. They play it to take away big plays...keep it all in front of them and rely on their near perfect tackling.

Also, you want to take a guy who has yet to even been a top coordinator in an NFL game and hire him as HC?

Hoping he lives up to that family legacy?

It has nothing to do with the name but who he has learned from and be ready to put new things into the game plan.

So if the played a cover 3 shell where was the slant game or some screen passes that would allow the team to flow down the field by making these high percentage plays. It shows that McCarthy cannot adjust from his game plan that he comes into game with. Most of the league has a clue what Mike does inside the 5 and in key situations.

Peyton has done very well, it is a shame he had to sit out one year. He has shown that he can adjust to his talent around him and put them into spots to make plays. He his ability to use more than one back and keep a balanced attack is something Mike has yet to show.

Hard to get irate over the Sherrard debacle when you consider Bulaga was the starter, and Barclay was the swing tackle. Not many teams have enough depth to cover those two injuries.

And this was the first time in a long time that AJ Hawk was the better of the two starting ILB. And he played poorly, WTF Brad Jones? Barrington and Lattimore need to see increased snaps immediately. Linebacker play aside from Matthews was atrocious.

Most of the league has a clue...yet the Packers still average in the top part of the league every year in scoring right? Even in a year with Rodgers hurt last year.

Payton has done about as well as McCarthy. Both won a SB...both have come up short since then...one missed a year due to scandal.

If you want to complain about McCarthy since the SB...my guess is you would complain about Payton too.

BTW...McCarthy used more than one back quite often last year...and will continue to do so this year with Lacy and Starks.

i think we should just tank the rest of the season and go for #1 overall pick next year. if we can't beat seattle, what's the point of going to the playoffs and losing and then getting a pick in the 20's?

Can someone ban the troll?

It's probably an alias for ITS.

Do your self a favor and watch some games from the last 3 years and you will see that McCarthy uses a majority of the same plays inside the 10 yard line. He is not creative or make the defense think. They have been successful putting up points because of the offensive talent on the field. If McCarty was better coach the team would not allow Rodgers to get sacked m ore by using shorter routs, screen passes and play action.

Take a look back at last years first Bears game and you will see how McCarthy cost the Packers a win. When Rodgers when out Packers still ran the ball well. Problem was McCarthy never used it to his advantage. He kept calling run plays until the team got into 3rd down plays that they needed to pass. Good coaching would have used the established running game to their advantage and called some early down play action or even straight drop back passes. Bears stacked the box and McCarthy kept running into the box playing scared and not to loose, which in the end cost them the game. Packers had everything they needed to win the game with a backup QB and poor coaching and play calling by McCarthy let it slip away.

More than likely tomorrow the team will come out and play lights out in the home opener against a inferior Jets team that lacks a good past defense at the present time. Watch what happens inside the 10 yard line tomorrow for plays. I can call some the most common plays McCarthy will run.

He will go 5 wide at least 3 times inside the 10 yard line. We will see Kuhn run 2 times inside the 5 yard line. There will 2 draw plays run inside the 5 yard line.

Likely what you wont see. Play action pass, play action roll out, or a roll out pass play. These plays would put pressure on the defense to make quick choices on how they are going to defend. I could be wrong but McCarty's past does not use these plays inside the 10 yard line.

I see the Ravens are shopping Arthur Brown. The Packers would be wise to take a look.
It was believed that Packers like Brown when he came out and he would be a good option for linebacker core that could use help. Lattimore may step up tomorrow and make Capers think of playing him more over Jones.

Problem is we need 2 solid ILB. They need to start giving Lattimore and Barrington more time.

If they do not improve this week i am sure there will be changes. The coach loses credibility if he is benching people partway through the first game.

Eh, Hawk has been poor for the last 5 years. I would say the coach loses credibility for continuing to trot out a mediocre player.

Wow this looks horrible today against an average Jets team. Time to move Capers out the door come Monday. If McCarthy cant see the problem this year he needs to go as well. This is just insane. Rodgers is being wasted by a poor coaching staff that can't get the team ready to play. Rex Ryan is just out coaching McCarthy so far today. Jets come into Packer house ready to kick some A$$, and packers just ho humming about the game.

How was Lattimore yesterday?
He and Devon House left the game for a bit due to cramping. The D played better than weeks 1&2 but, again could not get off the field on 3rd down in the 4th qtr.
Better than..correct, but still not good. Had no answer for Johnson or Bush.

Boykin looked horrible with all the drops. I was hoping they would play Adams more, but I read today that they benched him for a while because he ran a wrong route in the first quarter. I don't remember that play.

It looked like it was supposed to be a bubble screen to Adams and he took off up field. Rodgers threw behind him and tv caught AR jawing at him. One of many out of synch plays for the Packers O.

(Ring ring)

Gonz: Hello?

TT: Tony, can you still play?

Gonz: What are you paying?

TT: If you can still work the middle, whatever you want...
You mean a phone call that would never happen, and probably shouldn't happen?
And I don't think TE play was that bad. He had the only TD. Not as flashy as Finely, but he didn't have a drop either.

I'm not sure if coaching or Oline is the offenses decline. Hell, maybe it's because they gave Rodgers too much power, but as said above, they looked out of sync.

Not sure what it is either. Oline looks worse...not run blocking well (some of that is playing tough defenses)...but Rodgers just looks off too. Not as studly accurate as he has been in the past.

Thompson is a genius. Despite all the concerns from nearly every Packer fan, Ted knew how good we are on defense so he spent lots of draft picks on offensive players.
