***OFFICIAL*** Guitar Guys Thread -- all axes, all the time (3 Viewers)

Hey gents, my mom's estate just settled and I have a chunk of change I want to put into collectible stuff I can pass down to my daughter telling her it came from her grandparent's estate (sort of). My sisters vultured the material property so I feel a little heirloom and memoir-less. I'll spend up to 10k on a investment quality acoustic guitar. I looked at several in brick mortar shops last weekend and 5k seemed like a great price point, but I didn't trust my lacking knowledge enough to make a deal. Enter you guys. Thoughts?

Hey GB. Like you I totally stalled on the partscaster, but I did just lay out all the pieces on a dedicated work bench. I think spring fever for me this year is guitar fever. I'll try to turn that mess into a working guitar in the next month or so... with pics! I still have a bunch of blanks I'd like turn into guitar bodies, but a luthier I am not.
My partscaster will be making its public debut at our May 10 show. But again, my project was like a simple swan dive to your twisting quadruple somersault.
The judges would probably give yours a nine and mine a five with a giggle despite and because of the degree of difficulty. Kindergartners shouldn't try twisting quadruple somersaults.

Okay, I can't resist. My two boys were messing around this past weekend and I took a video of them doing a modified version of Sunshine of Your Love. They are very much beginners, so I'm posting this more for fun than for constructive feedback or anything. My youngest just turned 11 and this was only his second day on a real kit. Just thought it might give you guys a little smile.

Really awesome stuff here, BB. They sound great... definitely better than the "beginner" label you gave them. You should be really proud.
Definitely proud. And excited to see where they end up going with it.
I should be careful going back through threads. :tear:

Sorry, GB. You should still be very proud, for whatever that's worth.

I'm a terrible guitarist (too lazy and busy to practice), but I wanted to post this video here just because I asked for advice before I bought some of this equipment.

Pretty pleased with the new rig overall:

DBZ Cavallo Flying V

Line 6 Line 6 POD Guitar Modeling and FX Processor

Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket

Congrats on the new rig. How is the distortion on the Subway Rocket without any effects?

It's solid. It's probably not going to top a really good pedal, but you can get a nice crunch.

Terrible my ###. I've seen a bunch of your videos. You rock and that's a sweet rig!

Thanks!

My only complaint with the Cavallo is the paint is pretty delicate - far too easy to chip the finish. But I must say I really like the neck.

Whoops. I totally misread your question. The Mesa is a lovely little barebones amp. I wasn't really in the market for an amp because I'd just purchased a Fender Twin Chorus. But when a buddy was selling an American-made Mesa for $300, there's no way I could pass on it. It has no reverb - which is a little odd. The distortion is pretty tame.

Thoughts?
I'm sure Otis has a few cast offs laying around...

I built this guitar for Chance and me to share. And we played it together on stage yesterday.

My wife is out of town. I changed the strings on my acoustic for the first time in a decade and strummed a bit last night.

This. Awesome sentiment, awesome guitar. I think I remember the details of your build of that one. Looks fantastic.

Awesome!

I am embarrassingly close to done with mine, but haven't pulled it together.

Thanks. Build details in this very thread!

Been a wild year and a half since starting this thread. I accumulated a bunch of expensive (around 4k) stunning acoustics, stopped playing them, sold thm off. I'm now left with my one acoustic, a cedar topped parlor guitar made by a Hawaiian company called Pono, an acoustic electric hybrid nylon string guitar for jazz, and my main squeeze, my Yamaha semi hollow SA2200, which has sat in a case for a year during my acoustic phase and is now in desperate need of a professional setup. (buzzing all over the place). The newborn has made playing time very limited lately, but once she settles in some more and we get a house move ironed out, I'm hoping to pick up and start playing some more again. I was really starting to get my groove back, but I'll have to just work back through the cobwebs again.

I'm liking that natural with the spalted maple top. I've never owned or played a PRS but hear they are nice.

Paging Otis...
Omg drool.

My PRS was the best electric guitar I ever owned (my Yamaha semi hollow is up there, but different tool).

I love the look of this one. Love it.
Why is it so cheap? I thought PRSs were expensive.
I'm guessing this is one of those models with the cheaper bolt on neck. They have a cheaper line these days.

Not a bolt on, but I'm not sure SEs are American made.
Not gonna lie, I don't care for the headstock on these. But the spalted body is super cool.

These are made in Korea. Says so on the back of the headstock.

I like the Santana Yellow color even more. Damn I may need to buy one of those.

I also think the SE's may be made in Korea, but PRS puts out quality guitars. I think the expensive ones are made in Baltimore. But Korean made is better than Chinese made.. at least for the Les Paul line, I have read.

I absolutely love the look of the spalted top. For this price, I think I'm going to get one of these.

I like the Santana yellow too but I think I like the natural one slightly better.

I don't know all the differences in the different PRS lines, but for my purposes as a casual basement guitarist, I love that they offer an affordable line. I've always liked the bird inlays and I love the sound of the PRS from what I've been able to hear.

I'm pretty sure I recall my old American one having a set neck vs bolt on in the SE

That said, who cares. I was always a huge Santana for in terms of guitar playing and I couldn't wait to get a PRS with the bird inlays. It was so stunning. And these SEs seem to get fantastic reviews and are supposedly excellent bang for the buck. Who cares if they are made on Mars! Go for it and good luck.

Anyone know if these floating bridge models can easily be replaced for a fixed bridge? I've always hated trem guitars mostly because I grew up on a fixed bridge and tend to rest my hand on the bridge sometimes.

I agree the spalted top is awesome.

I didn't see a trem bar but I do see the hole on the bridge. I've never played a floating bridge model so I can't compare. But is there a real difference in playing one of these if the trem bar is not installed? I mean, could I tell a difference? Seems maybe tuning might be affected more often on a floating bridge model.

Yeah that hole is for the "whammy bar." So when you press down on that bridge, it changes the pitch. Lost of people play with trems and have no problem with it. I just played a Gibson SG in my formative years, a hardtail/fixed bridge guitar, and got into the habit of resting my strumming hand there on occasion. I've tried trem guitars a couple times but it drives me batty. Don't let that dissuade you.

I haven't I wned a PRS, but I've never had a problem hardtailing the bridge on my guitars with trems.
What do you mean by hardtailing?
Replacing the floating/tremolo bridge with a fixed bridge.
Yeah, don't even have to replace the bridge technically. What you do is loosen the trem springs and then place a piece of wood behind the metal bridge block. The string tension will keep the bridge stationary against the wood wedge, thus fixing the bridge. It's really easy.

Instructional video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkj8p4Z3Rjg (fast forward to 3:00, as Chappers talks A LOT).

My view on tremolos is this - if you use tremolo when you play, great. If you don't, hard-tail it. Having a floating bridge makes tuning significantly more difficult and there's no reason to complicate things for yourself if you're never going to use the tremolo anyway.

Excellent advise. Thanks! I prefer to work on creating vibrato with my fret hand fingers instead of using some bar that may get in the way.

My buddy's been drooling over axes from the Electrical Guitar Company.

Beautiful tones or harshest sounds

Electrical Guitar Company was born out of total admiration of the aluminum instrument world. Those who have had a chance to play an aluminum-based instrument rarely go back. With aluminum, you are capable of generating some of the most beautiful tones. Conversely, you can create some of the harshest sounds ever imagined. Kevin Burkett continues the legacy of producing amazing aluminum instruments through Electrical Guitar Company.

Let me be the first to say this in this thread: these are SO metal.

Here ya go, Oat. Depending on a wildfire, I'll be in Norman's Saturday morning happy to check it out for you. :)

Also guitarguys. I joined this thread a year ago because my kid wanted a guitar for her birthday. It's been a fun year. This year she wants a ukelele or a mandolin. Mostly I think she wants wall art in her bedroom, but I'd appreciate thoughts. Some pretty cool looking all koa ukes under $300 bucks out there.

I noticed on standard MIM strats it says for bridge: Vintage style tremolo with high mass bridge block.

Does this mean it is a tremolo style (floating bridge) but has a bridge block built in that acts in the same way as the piece of wood, resulting in it actually being a fixed bridge?

Or is it not the same thing as we're talking about here?

No, the bridge block refers to the metal piece of the bridge that goes through the body and to which the trem springs are attached. So that won't be a fixed bridge (but you can easily fix it).

Look at this photo. The bridge block is the solid metal piece underneath and perpendicular to the top of the bridge. The wood piece you insert to hardtail the bridge is typically referred to as the "trem block."
