I kinda thought that to, with the "security system" and everything I guess he shoulda been aware.... and the dyanmite kate threw, he should had some knowledge of their intent.. maybe he was too busy to watch all three groups?Raft, Locke/Jack, and the restwe are missing another important fact....Locke and Boone had been digging up that hatch for, I believe they said, 3 weeks now.
Did the dude in the hatch not NOTICE two guys spendin 12 hrs a day for 3 weeks digging outside? The hatche was BURIED before Locke and Boone got there...so did the Dude () know they were there previously? he seemed genuinly surprised that there was an explosion.

It took an explosion for him to hear anything....BUT.....we can probably assume he knew they were on the island so he'd expect them to find the hatch and try to get in. Maybe he just didn't expect them to do it so soon.we are missing another important fact....Locke and Boone had been digging up that hatch for, I believe they said, 3 weeks now.

Yes, but asking the question "didn't Walt say something about pressing the button?" is like asking "hey, did anyone notice Jin was Korean?" Yes, Walt said something about pressing a button, as has been mentioned in pretty much every other post for the last 3 pages.Not really, I haven't seen anyone mention the "button" on the computer possibly being the "button" Walt was talking about. Thanks. I have a feeling Desmond is some kind of medical/disease researcher. The mainframes recording data. The quarantine sign indicating the outside of the hatch. The serum he injected into himself as some type of antibody/vaccine.

Why would you think the ARE related. Jack and Sarah got married 2 years after the accident BTW. Until they fill in the supposed 2 years between then and the plane crash I guess we'll never know who is right.I guess I don't understand why people are assuming Jack with long hair was longer than 4 years ago......the only thing that is different about him is his hair length. People get crew cuts all the time......it isn't something that is reserved for people 8 years or older than people without crew cuts. Clearly that "miracle" leads them to getting married, and at some point get divorced.....very, very possible. I'm standing by my case of beer.Not sure how long he's been on the island, but I think the hospital scenes were older than 4 years back. Jack's hair looked awfully 80's to me, but that would make it 25 years ago, which is ludicrous. I still say that's either 8, 15, or 16 years ago to coincide with the numbers. 4 seems too short.Based on what? How old do you think he is on the island?The Jack/Carol Vessey scenes seem to be have taken place longer than 4 years ago.And your point is?I don't think so. Regarding the flashback back to Sara's accident:- If the other driver who died was Shannon's father, that flashback has to be more than four years ago (rules out Sara getting movement back and her legs at the same time Locke loses his). Didn't Shannon and Boone's surviving parents get married when the kids were 8 & 10?- Also, after Jack saves Sara, there has to be SOME sort of time for them to fall in love, get married, and for whatever happens to end their marraige. Do we know how long they were married?That flashback has to have been from a while ago. Maybe backing up the 16 year theory already proposed......BUT then how old is Jack, now? To do such a procedure, he would already have to have been a highly qualified surgeon, not just some newbie out of med school or an intern......I think he would have to be close to 50 on the island.

Sarahs speech-Thank you. Wow, can I get another microphone? I think this one's been drinking. A little over two years ago, I blew a tire out - flipped over the center divider into oncoming traffic, and was hit head-on by an SUV. My back was broken. They all said it was irreparable. And then there was Jack. And he promised he would fix me, because that's the kind of guy he is. Doctors have to go to school forever to be a spinal surgeon when you count interning and residency (ie, only allowed to assist others and can't be the primary surgeon). A cracker jack whiz kid surgeon MIGHT get a shot at 34 at the earliest if he started school right at 18 and never let up and was better than almost all other surgeons. I looked it up HERE, a neurosurgeon (neck and spine) would need 6 years of experience MINIMUM after med school.Assuming a doctor doesn't graduate until he's 25 or so, Jack wouldn't have become a doctor until then. And even then it would probably take him a while to be as prominently placed as he seemed to be. I say he was at least 30 in those flashbacks. He doesn't look much older than 40 now. 6 years residency/training
That's 16 years, making Jack a minimum of 34. And that assumes that Sarah was his first case, and if she was as bad as she said NO WAY do they let him do the surgery as a rookie.
If we want to call BS on the show for trying to fudge reality to make him a surgeon at 25, that's another debate on its own, but a "REAL" and experienced spinal surgeon would have to be around 40.
The issue that I have is that if Desmond is the guy in the stadium (which we assume he is and not a clone/twin/double/brother/etc.), then Desmond would have had to get from the stadium to the island, and as I mentioned earlier there's no way he got to the island 16 years ago as Jack would have to be almost 50 (minimum 34 + 16).
If we go backwards, how old do we think Jack is on the island? To determine when the Sarah accident was, we need to allocate time for him to have operated on her, have her recover, have them date, have them get married, and have them not be married any longer. That has to be several years, IMO.
As for Desmond, for those that have the DVD and just watched the first season, by any chance does anyone remember him being in the first season anywhere--even in the background? I suspect that he will start appearing in other scenes from other flashbacks involving other characters, and I'm curious if they already showed him last year and we missed it or did not pick up on it.
I see where you are going (and where I was wrong).So Shannon's MOTHER and Boone's FATHER passed away and the two surviving spouses got married when the kids were 8 & 10. Then Shannon's father could have died anytime thereafter, and leave the inheritance to Boone's mom.

Alright, I am starting to recognize some connections here I haven't noticed before. And because of some recent poly sci and history classes I took, my memory is fresh on Locke, Hobbes, and such. Mainly because this Desmond guy got me thinking about Locke and Hobbes.This is beating a dead horse into the ground, but bare with me. John Locke shares many characteristics of the real John Locke. The living in the "wild" and being obsessed with nature tipped me off. Lets look.
Think of how Locke continueally opposed Jack (The monarchy)And to go even farther out there, Locke helping Charlie could be connected to how old Locke's affiliation with King Charles._____________________________So lets take this a step further.John Locke said that man started out in a 'state of nature.' This was a period of time before any government existed - a state of pure anarchy. Man found this unbearable because everyone was impeding on each other's natural rights (life, liberty, property). So, in order to make life more tolerable, they formed what he called a 'social contract.' They created a government that would protect them from each other. He also said that the power of the government is derived from the consent of the governed - so if the people didn't like the government, they could revolt. This led to a very minimalist/libertarian form of government - existing just to protect liberty.So, when you think about it:The survivors were in a state of nature and anarchy and couldn't cope without a leader. So, Locke told Jack that he needed to step up and become the leader. However, Locke isn't always a fan of Jack's leadership and when he feels that Jack oversteps his boundaries, he ignores him (very libertarian)Not only that, Locke felt that man could leave society whenever he wanted and could live in nature. The old Locke was a big proponent of destiny, and so is LOSTLocke!Now back to Rousseau. Rousseau advocated a return to the state of nature and said that man was a noble savage when in the state of nature.I'm not sure about destiny, but it's very possible as I do know that the original Locke was also a "man of faith." He wrote an essay called "A Letter Concerning Toleration," where he said that all faiths should be tolerated (except Athiests and Catholics). So, there's another parallel.I am expecting a person with the last name Hobbes to emerge. Actually, to take it a step further, when the *spoiler* split happens (One of the writers mentioned this in an interview) the split will come right down between Jack and Locke. Locke on one side, Jack on another.

OK - call me clueless, but I never checked out this "free for all" section and was so happy to see this AMAZING thread about my favorite show!! I watched all last season and bought the dvds so my hubby could catch up. Last night was awesome and you guys rule re: your theories and info!Thanks!P.S. I love the post about Desmond being involved in everyone's lives, I also thought I saw John Locke in the ER, I never saw any raincoated people in the jungle(?), I was also wondering how Desmond could have been running with Jack when he was a surgeon and somehow ended up in the hatch without a lot of time having gone by - Jack can't be that old!I, also thought that Roussau's genetic mirror theory true story link was bogus!Also, thanks for that "numbers" post - that was awesome!!P.S.
