Official LUCERO Band Appreciation Thread (1 Viewer)

Insoxicated
Alt Country-ish band from Memphis...  A few of us have chatted about them for years now in other threads her but it appears they don't have their own thread. Ben Nichols is in the discussion among the top 50 songwriters active today, IMO.

Any other fans?

Going to see their annual hometown outdoor show this Saturday here in Memphis. Last year's show was one of the best concerts I've seen in years. So damn good live.

Obligatory Random Link "My Best Girl"

"Nights Like These"

"Slow Dancing" live

Best description I've heard of Nichols' style/voice is "Country Cobain"

The War - Live

Such a great ####### song....

I got drafted at 19
Me and a bunch of boys from home
January '43, drove out to Pine Bluff and signed on
Went to basic south of Birmingham
Put me on west coast bound train
Spent three days out in San Diego
And they shipped me back east again
Left a port out of New York
Slept for months in British rain
Tore it up down in London town
And they shipped me back out again

The preacher said
"Boys he who is killed tonight
Will dine with the Lord in Paradise"
One boy spoke up, said
"preacher come on, eat your supper with us

Never talk about those first days
Lots of friends left behind
But I made it all the way across France
And I fought at the Maginot line
Road a tank into Belgium
Like them better than the French
Like my daddy, thirty years before
I did my time in a trench
Lots of days there's no water
But the liquor kept me warm
The cellars were stocked to the ceiling with booze
So I carried a bottle with my gun

The preacher said
"Boys he who is killed tonight
Will dine with the Lord in Paradise"
One boy spoke up, said
"preacher come on, eat your supper with us"

Three times I made sergeant
I'm not that kind of man
And pretty much just as quick as I could
I get busted back to private again
Cause takin' orders never suited me
Giving them out was much worse
I could not stand to get my friends killed
So I took care of myself first
Now I know that don't sound right
Don't think too bad of me
Now it keeps me up nights
What I could have done differently

The preacher said
"Boys he who is killed tonight
Will dine with the Lord in Paradise."
One boy spoke up, said
"preacher come on, eat your supper with us"

I'd be no guest at the table of the Lord
His food was not to be mine
'Cause I cursed His name every chance that I could
And I reckon that's why I'm still alive

on a lucero kick again today... been listening to them for about 7 hours straight. Love this band.

Love these guys! I discovered them on Pandora and saw them live at a roots, blues, and bbq in Columbia Mo last year.

Great Americana music.

Love the Nichols 'Last Pale Light..' EP.

Not sure what else falls into the genre, but a truly great job of a singer / songwriting interpretation of a piece of fiction (Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy)

Most definitely. His track for The Walking Dead is solid too.

Yeah, these guys Wail. Ive seen them a few times and Nichols solo once.

The song you are thinking of is Last Pale Light in the West.

Became a big fan since the Live From Atlanta set came out a few years ago.  I had seen them open for a NYE Hold Steady show a few years earlier and liked the sound, but had never gotten back to them until I started listening to Live From Atlanta on Spotify.  But prior to that, never dived into them.

Ben's voice is an acquired taste, but after seeing them a few times in the past year, definitely a band I'll check out every time through.

I discovered/started listening to Jason Isbell on Pandora and these guys get played some on that channel. First song by them I heard was from the 1372 Overton Park record so being from Memphis I had to look them up. So good.

Jason Isbell is amazing too.

After finding Lucero and really liking them I was rewatching an episode of Breaking Bad and I noticed junior had a Lucero poster on his wall. Pretty cool.

I found them the same way (only my station was DBT).  Isbell is about the best artist out there currently.  I like Lucero a lot.  More on a song-by-song basis than the albums, but when they click it's great.  I would love to see them.  Nights Like These is my favorite.  Brilliant.

Not to thread-jack but Isbell is excellent in concert if you have not seen him.

Back to Lucero.
