Dammit!!! I had a horrible feeling when they trotted out Ray vs Alvarez.

He took his closer out that hadn’t given up a run yet?

Not defending the move obviously, but Sewald's 1-2 slider that spun practically down the middle to a rookie who looked like a buffoon on the first slider of the at-bat was pretty horrible.

Bringing in SP in that situation is almost always a bad idea. Baseball is a game of routine and starters have a long routine to get ready for a game. They have all the time they need and go through a bunch more stuff to get ready. It's a totally different mindset and why closing isn't for any pitcher just because they have good stuff. This is especially dumb in game 1 of the series when you should have a rested pen.

In addition, Ray is not a left-handed specialist type of pitcher. His slider is actually better to RH batters than left handers. He is also prone to giving up the homerun. It's how most of the runs are scored against him.

This was a terrible move by the manager and should never have happened.

man, these pitchers just look ****ing exhausted after every pitch. how about some conditioning drills, you tubs.
I read an article a long time ago based on an interview with Kurt Schilling. He was talking about pitch count and being tired and how it affects pitchers. The biggest take away was that not all pitches were created equal and that the number of pitches isn't as important as the type of situations faced when pitching. Basically, he said he had games where he could throw 120 pitches and not be tired at all because he never had to face any high leverage situation where he had to bear down and spend a bunch of energy focusing and going all out. He also said there were times when he was done at 60 pitches because of the game situation and amount of mental/physical exertion that he had to spend to get the outs he needed. I found it very interesting, and it makes a lot of sense. Playoffs are a different beast and I would expect the mental exertion would take a lot out of a guy especially if he wasn't used to the stress of playoffs.

Ok, now I am more upset.

I just read that because the 'Stros destroyed Ray so bad this year they were planning on skipping him as a starter for the series. Cool- so you know that, but you trot him out in an unfamiliar situation vs Houston's best hitter with game 1 on the line???

Why are the Braves taking out Wright at 83 pitches with a 3-0 lead going to the 7th. Dude has been money all year and he’s pitching another gem.

Not feeling it tonight from the Phils. They took 1 in Atlanta. Need to regroup at home on Friday. Feeling like this one goes 5 which obviously favors the Braves.

I think he sat for a while in top of 7th and their big 3 relievers were all rested and ready to go. I'm not surprised with Snitker making that move at all.

I wonder if the Braves will send out Strider in game 3. Morton has been very shaky down the stretch.

It's an interesting choice. Morton has been a big game playoff picture but like you said, he's had several rough outings. Local talk in Atlanta has been if they lose tonight that they would go with Strider in game 3. Snitker loves his veterans so it wouldn't surprise me to see Morton run out there in game 3.

The thing in the back of everybody's mind is if they can force a game 5 which Fried will you get. He was a stud in game 6 of the WS so not a huge concern but he was pretty brutal in game 1 - hopefully he's healthy and just had a bad game.

Josh Donaldson:

:lmao::lmao::lmao:
As a Twins fan, It made me laugh watching that. I was excited when MN signed him, but he quickly wore out his welcome and the Twins owe the Yankees a big thank you for taking his contract. Unfortunately the hated Yankees won that game and as much as I would like to see it, I don't think Cle can win this series.

I had him on my fantasy team and he was Mr. consistent stud all year. But he failed me big time during my fantasy playoffs. Hopefully for you guys that doesn’t happen again in the real playoffs.

Ugh. That makes that move make even less sense (if that's even possible)

Can someone please introduce Scott Servais to Yordan Alvarez so next time he sees him he can intentionally walk him?

Was going to say the same thing. If there are two outs and an open base, freaking walk him. He’s driven in 7 of their 11 runs. Bergman is 1-6 behind him.

Seattle had a great shot to be up 2-0 and go home and the pitched to him twice.

Will give props though- houst is a great team and there were some great plays on D for them today. And of course Alvarez is a beast.

These games definitely need to be sped up.
I’m curious what the ratings will up being for these MLB playoffs.
Only 3.5 hours going into the bottom of the 9th. And their biggest demographic is also the most likely to fall asleep through it.

Morton vs Thor tomorrow. I thought Suarez might go but maybe it would be short rest? 2 veterans who are battle tested.
Phils putting Bailey Falter up there. He's better than Syndegaard right now.

Thomson in his presser said Thor is starting tomorrow.
Gotcha. They have falter listed on CBS sports. I'd imagine Syndegaard has a shirt leash
I like the move. Always go with the veteran in the playoffs. Look what happened to Strider today (who is probably the next phenom pitcher in baseball). But agreed with the short leash.

Assuming the Phils make it past the Braves, I actually think they match up pretty well in the next round as well. I think the Yanks or Stros would be very tough to beat.

Also rooting for Seattle to pound the bejeezus out of the cheaters, and maybe drive Mattress Mack into bankruptcy.

They are. Just hammering Verlander.

ESPN had Verlander and Fried 1 and 2 SP.

Rough start for us Braves backers. Was hoping they might pull off an Astros but it was not to be. Gotta win 3 of 4. I'm officially concerned.

Yeah, I kind of wanted to play the Cardinals - they seems to have magic against us but the Phillies lineup is formidable. I knew they were capable of outslugging us. I didn’t expect Fried to pitch so poorly - he was bad today. And we had plenty of chances - bases loaded 2 of the first 3 innings - not many big hits.

I keep hearing "experts" (mostly gambling people) saying Braves are OBVIOUSLY better this year than last year. Has made me nervous that they are destined to disappoint for a couple of months now. I really hope I'm wrong.

I think it’s true they are better and they could easily lose this series and I’d still believe they were better this year than last. They just got hot, hit some huge homers and the bullpen was lights out.

I actually have a ridiculous multi-sport parlay alive with Phillies winning it all. So I'm not ROOTING for them over my Braves, but if they do win I can start hedging and make some money.
They can hit and have two dominant starters. That's very helpful in the postseason. It's going to come down to whether the bullpen can hold it together.
The best way to overcome a suspect bullpen is to score a ton of runs so the bullpen matters less.

I have zero confidence in Thor. But I agree there aren’t a lot of great options.

Congrats to the Phillies fans. Maybe a magical run nobody expects like the Braves last year.

Braves pitching was garbage all series but credit Phillies bats - felt like Atlanta put all their eggs in the winning the division basket and just were flat.
