Ministry of Pain

Footballguy
I guess we will work backwards from the draft.

1.25 Vontae Davis-CB Illinois...there is plenty out there on this guy. I believe he is a true boom or bust player for the Miami Dolphins. He suffered his last season at IL due to a horrendous pass rush, but he still recorded 76 tackles and had 4 interceptions. He is 6 foot and 205 so he has pretty good size and he ran the fasted 40 of the DBs at the draft with a just under 4.5 sprint. I have mixed feelings about him and do not think he will be a shut down CB, but he has a lot of athleticism. I love the guy they got in round 2 which I will talk about but I see Davis as a guy who will be brought on slowly behind Jason and WIll Allen, likely a Nickleback for his year but he may not ever amount ot more than a really good nickleback, we'll see. I'm not hot on the pick but I hope I am proven wrong.

2.12 Pat White-QB WVU...I am not going to list WR next to him because quite frankly he has never played the position. I know he might have really good hands but he didn't run routes in college so I don't see him as more than a total project right now for Miami who has taken the Wildcat to a new level apparently. I can see Henne at QB, White coming in to run 10-12 plays with the Wildcat plus getting the ball near the end zone. In fact I think White's selection was a major hit for CHad Henne owners in Dyansty. Can you envision Henne getting pulled inside the 5 so Pat White can come in and run the Wildcat or Option? I don't like this pick since we desperately needed a good solid WR.

2.29 Sean Smith-CB Utah...HOMERUN!!! Best pick of this draft and will be the best player to come out of this draft for Miami and absolutely one of the best picks in the 2nd round for sure. Miami stole this guy. Phinfans think Bobby Taylor here. The guy is almost 6"4' and 215 so he can go get physical with Randy Moss and Terrell Owens who they square off with 4 times during the regular season. I expect Smith to start quickly in Miami or at the least be part of every double team on the 2 WRs i just mentioned. He can overpower a smaller WR and he left his Senior year behind to turn Pro...I love this pick and Miami fans are going to get to know Sean Smith very soon. He also has a great 1st name that is spelled right, haha.

3.23 Patrick Turner-WR USC...Swing and a miss. He had some injuries, certainly has done some things at SC over his career but not a standout by any stretch. I'll let others post about him if they want but I don't see where this pick fills a hole at WR. He is 6"5' but he isn't fast and not very physical either. Can they switch him to TE or something?

4.08 Brian Hartline-WR theOSU...Came out too early, really surprised to see Miami draft 3 wannabee WRs that will not pan out when they could have just traded that 1st round pick to Arizona and taken Boldin...makes me sick really.

So far this draft is pretty mediocre in my opinion for Miami but then again this draft is pretty meh, period.

This is the way I see it - we entered the draft desperately needing to upgrade at our two weakest positions: DB and WR. What did BP and Ireland do? Four WR's and DB;s combined in the first five picks. Now some people may not like the players that were selected to fill those positions, but I personally will defer to the Dolphins brass when evaluating talent. In particular, WR was not only position of need for the Dolphins in terms of starters, but in terms of depth as well. This is what we had going into the draft:

Ginn

Bess

Camarillo (ACL)

London (3 total receptions)

Not a whole lot after the top two, especially if Camarillo is less than 100% this year. I can only imagine that BP ranks Turner and Hartline higher than the consensus internet draftniks rankings...

The one guy thats still available that I hope we take in round five is Jasper Brinkley, big, strong ILB from South Carolina. I thought wed take him as early as round three, but its possible he just didnt grade out that well.

I still think Henne is our QB starting sometime this season.Pat White will be nothing more than a gimmick QB running the wildcat despite Mike Mayock's massive man love for him.He is way too small to be a starting QB in this league period.Parcells and Co. will look to take advantage of his quickness and speed much like the Bears did with Hester...............

Dolphins rushed the ball 86 times out of the Wildcat this past year. I can see us increasing that number if we run the play from week one with White in the game.

Bye. bye Mr. Beck...you thing I like about the White pick is that he will allow us to basically carry 2 QB's. He'll be listed as a WR, used in the wildcat and serve as the third QB.

Davis, we'll see...he has the physical assets, lets see if he has learned from brother Vernon's mistakes and applies himself. If he does, he could be a stud. Like the depth and size Smith adds, he could finally spell the end of the Jason Allen experiment.

Thought the draft got off to an excellent start.

Love the Davis-White-Smith 1-2-3 in the first 2 rounds.

But after that, I felt like the management was throwing darts to at a list of WRs and WRs only. I thought there was some defensive talent still on the board that I would have liked them to take a look at rather than becoming focused strictly on WR.

But then again, I give Parcells the benefit of the doubt due to last season.

I was OK with the 1st day, absolutely hated day 2 as I saw way too many reaches especially after the mini WR run right before our 3rd pick.

So, anyone think the fact that they didn't really draft a pass rusher signals the return of Jason Taylor? I hope so.

I think it signals that, as well as extreme confidence in Cameron Wake.I also think that fact that they passed on some good values at RB is a sign of great confidence in Ronnie Brown and Patrick Cobbs. Add to that the fact that they did not draft a difference maker at WR on top of the fact that we spent a ton on the OL, and I think we are going to see a RB showcase (Ronnie leading the way, with nice contributions from Ricky and Cobbs as well), with a touch of trickery smattered in involving Patrick White.I hope we can get a 2010 pick for Beck. I'd be fine with a 6th. Anything.

The Wildcat had its day and is done. Do you guys remember how Baltimore turned the Wildcat into ##### cats. White better be a special teams ace otherwise he's a bust.

It helps when the guy running it has the ability to throw from the formation every now and then.................

Wildcat run by White > Wildcat run by Brown. The reason the wildcat got less effective was that its only threats were a run by Ronnie or a reverse to Ginn. With White back there the options will be a lot more varied.

Baltimore beat Miami and their Wildcat because the Ravens DLine mauled the Dolphins Oline who were missing both their starting guards to injury. That beatdown also signaled the end to thei starting C - Satele. As far as the Dolphins draft . . .Really happy with bothe CB's they picked up . . . . Davis & Smith. The Dophins haven't had good CB's since the Madison/Surtain days. The rest of the draft = meh for me.Was Pat White a reach in Rd 2? - probably. But Parcells and Ireland see something they like in him.

Miami will likely have a Wildcat package and also I am hearing about a spread formation, even though the WRs they picked are pretty bland they do offer size and they can spread the field out, have Ronnie or Ricky in the backfield with White under Center, things could at least be interesting and offer some nice match ups to opposing defenses.

I like the mindset the Dolphins headed with into the draft to upgrade the corners and find some WR depth in the later rounds. The corners are going to be what makes or breaks the Dolphins season this year and they play some fierce competition in 2009.

That being said, I don't like the Vontae pick, because he is going to be a head case. I am surprised that Bill made that pick. I do like the Sean Smith pick. Smith is HUGE for a corner. I am sure they are going to put him at safety.

To me the Pat White pick is a little over the top. Yeah the misdirection plays worked last year, but teams are going to be looking for that stuff this year. There comes a time when you just have to line up and execute normal run of the mill plays. If you can’t run a simple off tackle running play with some success then call it a season because tricks aren’t going to get any team very far.

The Dolphins have a tougher schedule this year and could actually be a better team in 2009 with fewer wins.

This draft was a success in that they shored up their secondary for years. Davis and Smith are both rock solid corner guys, and Chris Clemons from Clemson was the fastest, most ahtletic Safety at the combine and is most effective in coverage - the perfect complement to Gbril Wilson and Yemremiah Bell. Last year we solidified both lines, this year we tended to the secondary - our biggest need area. When you throw in Cameron Wake at the other OLB spot, I think our defense got much younger and better this offseason.

Like others, Im weary about our WR's in that we still lack a true #1. I dont have a problem with the guys we selected, as I think both offer interesting skillsets. I just dont see whose going to be the goto guy in this offense. Given the number of veteran WRs still on their old teams, I still wouldnt put it past Parcells to make a run for one of these guys. Remember, Tedd Ginn is NOT a Parcells guy so I can see him shipping him for someone that better suites his plans.

Im envisioning some 1st down i-formation with Ricky and Brown in the backfield w Pat at QB. Ricky and Brown both motion to slot WR, maybe a bunch on 1 side leaving Pat at QB who then moves back to shotgun. Youve now taken a 1st down i and turned it into a shotgun spread. Lots of mismatches here that will be difficult to account for.

ah there was a few plays guys were wideopen in that game and pennington missed a wide open WR and Ricky Williams dropped a sure-fire touchdown(wide open). They were both out of the wildcat.......

Miami Dolphins list of UDFA

Sean Smith is already starting at DB one week into camp ahead of Vontae Davis. And Patrick Turner has been the offensive star of the offseason so far. Looking good for BP and the Dolphins Draft gurus.
