***OFFICIAL Miami Dolphins Thread*** (1 Viewer)

We have stunk enough to not warrant an offseason thread for a long time. This offseason, maybe we will have something to discuss for a change.

Lots of reasons for optimism, and lots of reasons for concern. Here are a few worthy offseason topics in each category...

Reasons for optimism:

1. Looks like Parcells will stay. His work along with that of Ireland and Sporano this season was beyond spectacular. The rebuild looks to be well ahead of schedule.

2. Henning brought our offense to life with innovative and exciting play calling. He was able to take advantage of the skillsets that our roster did offer - which were not terribly strong. With another draft, and another year for some younger players to develop we may be able to infuse the innovative system with some stronger talent. That could lead to us having a really exciting offense for the first time since 13's knees began to fail.

3. The D is young, and good. Langford and Merling had solid rookie seasons, Matt Roth may have found his home at OLB, J-Peazy came back to life, Y. Bell looks like he may be a pro-bowl caliber safety, and the CBs (Goodman and Allen) had nice seasons.

4. Thanks to Jason Taylor's (sort of) demand to be traded to a "contender", we have an extra middle second round pick in this draft as well as an extra 6th. Having 3 picks in the first 2 rounds is fun! Could get us another blue chip OL, a WR, and maybe another secondary guy if all goes well.

5. Ronnie played well despite being just one year removed from major knee surgery. He also stayed healthy for the first time in his career for 16 games. He should by all means come back stronger next season.

Reasons for concern:

1. Pennington had a great season. Best in Miami by far since 13 was behind center. But the question clearly remains - can he take us to the next level, or is he simply an average QB who makes good decisions, but lacks the skill to take a team deep in the playoffs?

2. Crowder and Goodman are free agents that we may have to let go. Both made major contributions this season.

3. Will we get a true WR1 in the offseason? Boldin is probably going to be way too expensive to trade for. Maybe Ocho Cinco? We cannot go into 2009 with Ted Ginn Jr or Devonne Bess as our WR1. Both make fine complimentary WRs, but we absolutely must get someone on the field that strikes at least a little fear into the opposing defenses. Without that, both the running game and Pennington will suffer, and as such, the offense will be average at best.

It's fun to have something to talk about in the offseason!

What up with Sampson Satele? I thought he was a steal, a young guy that was going to anchor the line, and I am rading the Fins are looking for his replacement.

Satele was not so good last year, and was horrific in the playoff game. Had to be moved to guard in favor of Al Johnson at center. He showed a ton of promise in 2007, but seemingly regressed in 2008. Not a lost cause yet, but definitely a reason for concern. He will have to battle for his job this season. Some great news for the Fins OL (and Ronnie Brown owners) today though...Dolphins | Carey re-signedFri, 20 Feb 2009 11:19:08 -0800Edgar Thompson, of the Palm Beach Post, reports the Miami Dolphins have re-signed OT Vernon Carey to a six-year contract worth $42 million, according to sources.

It's a good thing I dont get insulted easily, and that I enjoy conversing with myself at times.

Eventually, another Fins fan may find this thread, and maybe there will be someone to talk to.

Brad Smith looks like he will be a casualty of the new Jets regime. He could be a possible wildcat gem with his ability to run/pass/catch. It could open up a few new wrinkles, and I doubt he would cost too much. Any thoughts?

I was wondering if there was one of these in existence. I'm very happy that we were able to resign Carey, wasn't conventional wisdom that he was going to be lost in FA?

I knew if I kept finding excuses to bump, eventually someone would find me.When they didnt franchise him, and Jordan Gross got that monster contract, I thought Carey was gone. I think signing him was huge. Had we let him walk, we would have had no choice but to go OT early in the draft, so keeping him basically saves us an early draft pick. It also makes life a lot more peachy for Ronnie Brown owners!

I do think it means that Crowder is long gone though. Someone is going to be willing to give way more than we are I'd say.

I agree. Crowder is a good player, but I think he is pretty easily replaceable. Never turned out to be much of an impact player - but solid and steady. We'll probably draft his replacement on the first day of the draft.Yeremiah Bell would be far more difficult to replace. I would hate to see him walk.I would not mind seeing them bring back JT to play some OLB for a season. Price woudl have to be right - but I think his price has come down significanly anyway, and it would be a nice touch for his career to end it in Miami.

What about bringing in someone like Kevin Burnett LB DAL? I think he's a free agent and he's a Parcells guy.

You are far from alone here Chuck.

2008 was fun to watch. Ir was nice to actually be able to wear a Dolphin jersey out in public after 2007.

A few points . . .

Love the Carey re-signing - hopefully they threw in some weight clauses in his contract.

I want no part of Jason Taylor anymore - it's time to move on and get younger. Oh and Thank you Redskins for an early 2nd rd pick.

Re: Satele - Played great in 07 and started the season out great as well. He tore his labrum at some point during the season. This essentially eliminated the effectiveness of one of his arms. Satele is a great player and a spotty half-season after an injury shouldn't ruin his future as a player. The fact that they lost both their starting guards to injury last year certainly didn't help Satele either. Playing throught he injury he had last year shows a lot too. Satele would be good at G because he can pull, trap, and block down on the line. Which brings me to my next point . . .

If there is one FA player I hope the Dolphins break the bank for I hope they go after C Jason Brown from the Ravens. Before they resigned Carey they were 30+ million under the cap. Signing the 26 year old center would enable them to move Satele to G.

Re: Crowder - A decent player but I hope they don't break the bank for him - he is replaceable.

Bell needs to resigned.

One more year of Pennington and let's hope Henne continues to learn. I also see Henne getting some action towards the end of 2009.

I hope Parcells and compnay continue to build both sides of the line through the draft. If they don't sign Brown they need to draft a C. NT is another position of need. Curious to see what some of you Dolphins fans think of the Mock Draft we held here at FBG where I made the Dolphins selections . . .

HERE

Edit to add on the draft I did - I was a last minute replacement and kind of drafted unprepared - Love the 1st of my 2nd rd picks. If I had to do it over I don't know if I would have taken that LB with out 1st rd pick.

Let's not forget that the Dolphin schedule gets MUCH tougher in 2009. Continue to build the lines and add depth. The secondary outside of Bell needs to be completey rebuilt. Another draft or two and some key FA signings and this team can really start to contend in 2010.

It's good to be a Dolphin fan again.

Glad you found the thread. Tell all of your friends!I hear you on JT - I just think he may have another season in him, and it would be appropriate for him to finish it here if he and the staff/team can put what happened last year behind them. He still can probably bring it as a pass rusher on the opposite side from Porter - even if he is just used on passing downs. He would have to accept a very reasonable contract though. At least he would get what he said he wanted - to play for a contender!

I had no idea Satele was playing hurt. Thats actually great news.

I agree with you on Jason Brown. he will be expensive, but I get the feeling that Parcells will pay a lot to make the OL dominant, and that would be a great step in that direction, allowing Satele to move to Guard. Long/Smiley/Brown/Satele (Donald Thomas)/Carey is a potentially awesome OL.

I dont really follow college football enough to comment on the mock, but I have read a lot of opinions on Clay Matthews, all of which describe him as a cerebral, athletic football player with low risk. Seems like a Parcells-like player.

Gotta resign Bell, and draft some secondary guys - like you did in the mock. Maybe look at Gibril Wilson?

Getting closer to resigning Bell . . .

Yeremiah Bell | Dolphins

The Miami Herald reports that tackling machine Yeremiah Bell is expected to re-sign with the Miami Dolphins, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus.

"I believe the Dolphins have targetted Yeremiah Bell as a guy they need to sign," Rosenhaus declared during a television appearance on Miami's WSVN. "He's one of my clients. I've been in discussions with them throughout the week. I believe we'll work very hard. It's too hard to say whether or not we'll get a deal done. We're still working at it. But certainly we've been in discussions." Bell led the Dolphins with 120 tackles and was No. 13 in the league overall in 2008 in that category, and was expected to be one of the top free agent safeties available this offseason along with Sean Jones of the Cleveland Browns. In a poll conducted online by the Herald's Armando Salguero after Vernon Carey was re-signed, 83.2 percent of the respondents said that Bell was now the team's top free agent priority.

Dolphins expected to sign Jason Brown as early as Friday

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/0...orning-news-16/

From talking to clubs and sources in Indianapolis, all indications are that the Dolphins, who need to improve the inside of their offensive line, will make a huge push to sign Brown, who along with Bart Scott seems to be on the sign-right-away list. Samson Satele, Miami’s current center, is too short-armed and lacks range for the Fins to be the kind of productive line they want to be; he’s more of a back-up than a starter. The Fins must upgrade at center, and Brown would help them do that. One thing we know for sure, the Fins will strike at midnight

Armondo Salguera was talking about it in his blog today as well. This would be an absolutely outstanding addition. He is 26 and nasty. Might give us the best line we have seen since the Webb/Simms days. And there would be decent depth as well. There was also talk about Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard. Baltimore is likely to lock down one of them before free agency begins, and the Jets are also in the running for Scott and Leonhard.

Here is the blog entry...

Miami Dolphins eying Ravens in free agency

And you thought the Dolphins were done with the Ravens after the playoffs last season?

In fact the Dolphins are monitoring the Ravens this week as two and perhaps three possible free agents from that team are Miami targets, in varying degrees, when free agency begins Feb. 27.

The Dolphins like linebacker Bart Scott, center Jason Brown and strong safety Jim Leonhard, according to an NFL source. But the source says it is unlikely the Dolphins will get more than one of those players -- at most -- because of other circumstances, not related to Miami, that are currently at play.

The source said no team, including the Dolphins, are likely to land both Brown and Scott because one of them is likely to return to Baltimore as a newly minted re-signed player before the end of this week. It should be noted that agent Harold Lewis represents both Brown and Scott and he recently told the Baltimore Sun he was negotiating with the Ravens on deals for both.

"My gut feeling is one of the two is going to hit free agency and the other one will probably sign," Lewis told the Sun. "That's just my gut."

Make no mistake here, the Dolphins hold both in high regard.

Scott is the explosive, running back-hungry inside linebacker the team wants. He's big at 6-2 and 240. He's quick. He's a great run-blitzer and is often effective when blitzing on passing downs. He also has excellent instincts.

If there is a downside on Scott it is that he will command a high price and there will be plenty of competition for his services, including within the AFC East. He is also 28 years old, which is slightly older than what is optimal in Miami's eyes.

Brown, 26 in May, is more attractive from an age standpoint. He has size at 6-3 and 320. He has a reputation for being tenacious. He is durable, having started every game the past two seasons -- he was the only Baltimore lineman to start every game in 2007. And he has started as both a left guard and a center during his career.

Leonhard is the least likely of the three the Dolphins would land because, frankly, he's probably headed to the New York Jets anyway.

Speaking of the Jets, the hiring of Rex Ryan as head coach is not exactly a good thing for the Dolphins. It says a lot that Ryan is a Bill Parcells protege' and has the Big Tuna's respect. In fact, Ryan was among the coaches interviewed when Big Tuna was lining up his Tuna Helpers in 2008.

So how does Ryan's presence in New York affect the Dolphins?

Immediately, Ryan will be adding talent he's familiar with and that means Ravens players. The scuttlebutt in league circles is that Leonhard, who started for the Ravens and was the object of some man love from some of the posters on here, is on New York's free agent radar.

Not coincidently, the Jets are also interested in Scott, which might cause another problem for Miami.

Leonhard, you'll recall, had an interception in the playoff game against Miami. And yes, the Ravens, with Ryan as their defensive coordinator, beat the Dolphins twice last season. Doesn't mean Ryan is more likely to beat the Dolphins while with the Jets. But he obviously understood Miami's offensive weaknesses.

Discuss ...

Dolphins closing in on Bell . . .

With free agency starting at 12 a.m. Friday, teams and agents were down to the last 40 hours to get deals done. Perhaps that’s why Drew Rosenhaus, when reached by phone Wednesday, uttered only “I haven’t got time” before hanging up. Rosenhaus represents unsigned Dolphin safeties Yeremiah Bell and Ronaldo Hill. It has been widely reported that the Dolphins and Bell are close to a deal.

Hopefully we get some good news regarding C Jason Brown at 12:01am Friday morning - like we did last year with Smiley.

Gotta resign Bell.Lav Coles just got whacked in NY. I could definitely see he and Pennington reunited. I think it would be a great signing for us *at the right price*. I bet Coles would love to play with Pennignton again...and to face the Jets twice a year.

Wow - reuniting Coles with Pennington & Parcells sounds great. I'd expect him to be a Dolphin within hours of the start of free agency. Exactly what they wanted, someone with experience that could show all of the younger WRs the ropes and have great communication and chemistry with Pennington.Another gift from the Jets?

Chuck - Are we the only 2 Dolphin fans at FBG?

I think we are the only ones that spend any time on these boards in the heart of the offseason. I forgot that Parcells and Coles had history too. I am growing fond of the Jets after all these years of hatred.

Might have to send the Jets an Xmas card this year.

I'm definitely hoping we grab Coles. With Camarillo back and Ginn entering his 3rd year as well we might actually end up with a decent WR corps in that case.

I just repeatedly am surprised at the Dolphins' ability to get these players to sign on the dotted line before testing the FA market. I thought FOR SURE that Crowder would be a goner. So if that's true way to go front office.

Forgot about goodman. We need to get him and bell back in the fold. If Miami gets the C from Baltimore and an inexpensive WR I'd say we did just fine in FA.

Dolphins | G. Wilson agrees to terms

Thu, 26 Feb 2009 04:16:20 -0800

Alex Marvez, of FOXSports.com, reports the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with free-agent S Gibril Wilson (Raiders). Terms of the deal are not yet available.

This could mean that Bell is headed for free agency. At least we have a backup plan now.

I expect Coles to be in Miami...Why would anyone leave 6 Million dollars on the table unless they already had a deal to go play with thier best buddy again???Buyer beware though... I expect Parcells to give him a contract heavily laden with Incentives... Coles is one good hit away from being knocked out, has a toe situation and hasn't been 100% since.. Sheesh probably Pre-Skins.This deal is going to be Backloaded and filled with incentives... And in the end Coles is either going to perform or sit there and wonder where the hell his 6 Million dollars went.....I think it's a long shot for him to see that kind of money next year but, hey he's gotta be happy.

I thought Gibril Wilson was a good player, who was massively overpaid by the Raiders [as often happens with supporting members of great teams when they hit free agency]. Curious what this signing, if anything, has to do with the Bell re-signing.

GREAT signing by the Dolphins! Wonder if they'll resign Bell now? Wilson is 4 years younger than Bell.

They've been awfully busy the last 24 hours.

They signed Cameron Wake.

Resigned Carey and Crowder.

Signed Wilson.

Hopefully we will have Bell locked up soon. I really like what Miami has done so far.

all this before FA begins.

Wilson is an awesome signing by the 'fins.
Doesn't the Wilson signing give the Dolphins leverage against Bell now to lower his demands?
If I were Bell, I'd probably go and test the market now.
Agreed. While Bell had a good season last year for the Dolphins he is 31 and has been injured much of his time with the team. They just upgraded a posiotn of need and got younger there.Edit to add: Anyone know why he was cut by the Raiders? Is it just a cap casualty?Looking up his stats I really like what I see . . .9th in total tackles.Led all safeties in total tackles. He's not a full safety and plays close to the box ala Bell. They pretty much play the same position which means Bell is a goner.

Dolphins won't sink money into two safeties. Wilson is very much like Bell -- can be beaten in coverage but makes plenty of plays on the ball, excellent in the box in run support. Bell won't be back.

Kind of surprised on the Crowder resigning. i wonder if that means they think Scott is going to resign in Baltimore today ?

The Dolphins signed safety Gibril Wilson, who was released by Oakland last week, to a five-year, $27.5 million contract that includes $8 million guaranteed and $16.5 million in the deal’s first three years.

Next up for Miami is re-signing free-agent safety Yeremiah Bell, which it hopes to do today.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Wilson play FS while he was with the Giants and then switched to SS with the Raiders?

K - thanks. My Dolphin sources are telling me Bell will be resigned by the end of today - Shefter is still reporting the same too. Not sure which one of those guys would move to FS but it would give the Dolphins an excellent thumper Safety tandem. It also means the Dolphins would need two awesome CB's to pull off a Wilson/bell combo - somehting not currently on their roster, Could a CB be their 1st rd pick?

Big news on Jason Brown from PFT...

RAVENS CUT OFF TALKS WITH JASON BROWN

Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 12:06 p.m. EST

Albert Breer of SportingNews.com reports, at the PFT safe haven site, that the Baltimore Ravens have cut off talks with free-agent-to-be Jason Brown.

Specifically, the Ravens have informed Brown that the player isn’t in their plans for 2009.

Brown, a center in Baltimore, could also play guard with a new team.

One team that reportedly will be sniffing around Brown come midnight (if not earlier . . . if not already) is the Dolphins. Last year, Miami had a deal with guard Justin Smiley less than 30 minutes into the free-agency period. This year, Brown could be the next guy to negotiate a multi-multi-million-dollar contract from scratch, with no advance discussion or dialogue or communication of any kind, within an hour after the period for having permissible discussion or dialogue or communication of any kind begins.

Looks like Fins are attempting to fix all needs except CB in free agency. They already have resigned an OT and a LB. Rumors are hot that the Balt center, Bell and possibly even Coles will be signed in free agency. That leaves CB for the draft. With 3 picks in the 1st 2 rounds, I think 2 will be CBs and the 3rd maybe a DL.

Dolphins | May be interested in Buchanon

Thu, 26 Feb 2009 11:04:30 -0800

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, reports the Miami Dolphins may be interested in Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent CB Phillip Buchanon.

Bell agrees to 4-year deal with Dolphins

Yeremiah Bell not only will remain with the Dolphins in 2009. He's remaining as their starting strong safety.

Bell just agreed to terms on a 4-year deal worth $20 million. Of that $20 million a whopping $10 million is guaranteed.

2 hard hitting Safeties

Next up? PLEASE let it be jason Brown tomorrow.
Awesome! People clearly want to play for this organization again.

The Dolphins signed safety Gibril Wilson, who was released by Oakland last week, to a five-year, $27.5 million contract that includes $8 million guaranteed and $16.5 million in the deal’s first three years.Next up for Miami is re-signing free-agent safety Yeremiah Bell, which it hopes to do today.Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Wilson play FS while he was with the Giants and then switched to SS with the Raiders?
No, he played SS for the Giants.
K - thanks. My Dolphin sources are telling me Bell will be resigned by the end of today - Shefter is still reporting the same too. I do think Wilson can play FS and sometimes the NYG approach was to have 2 Safeties and not necessarily a FS and SS on the field at the same time. I like Wilson and think he will do well for the Dolphins. He is a much better player than his year with OAK would indicate.

Aren't both Safety spots interchangeable?I really like this tandem going forward - now they need some CB which will no doubt be addressed in the 1st few rounds of the draft.C is another spot they'll look at if they don't sign Brown.

Looks like Brown's asking price is going to be too high. Berger (G/C) from the Cowboys is coming in for a visit. Maybe the thought process now is someone to push Satele or a tutor a young guy we draft.

As much as I would love to have Brown as our C you can't blame him for wanting to sign fo the most $$$. Sounds like the Dolphins were prepared to go up to 6 million a year for him but the Rams might go up to 8 million a year for him.Alex Mack could be their 1st rd selection now if he's there for them

Here's how I see day 1 of the draft shaping up for Miami...

1.26 Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

2.12 Ron Brace, NT, Boston College

2.25 Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers

3.24 Pat White, QB/WR/KR/PR, West Virginia

Draft BPA day 2. Do not bring in Coles. Bring in Berger (or someone comparable) in FA. Release or trade Beck for whatever we can get (Pennington is the clear starter and is grooming Henne to be starter of future -- Pat White is our #3 QB).

As a fin fan I'm not loving Bart Scott going to the Jets and maybe Corey Ivy as well with Ryan in charge of the D. They put the beat down on us twice last year in Baltimore.

Coles Signs 3 Year Deal with Miami

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As per ESPN. Link coming.

I'm definitely hoping we grab Coles. With Camarillo back and Ginn entering his 3rd year as well we might actually end up with a decent WR corps in that case.
 This will be another exciting season between the 2 teams.... The rivalry is back...Can't wait to see how this deal is structured and who gets knocked out 1st Chad or Coles.I smell a Sig Bet with Smack coming....
