== OFFICIAL OAKLAND RAIDERS 2018 thread == (2 Viewers)

Well I sure am happy I didn't have an opportunity to watch the game yesterday.   The updates I got on Twitter and from a few buddies were enough for me to go home and immediately delete the recording.

While I can't speak to in game specifics.  I am mightily confused by some of the tidbits I read about the game.
Why was Carr throwing behind the line of scrimmage so much?
What the hell happened to the protection?  Again, just based on a few articles this was the most consistent pressure that Carr has faced in quite some time, and Seattle isn't a team known for their dline.
What has Conley done to earn 0 defensive snaps?  In a lost season, and a lost game, even more reason to put a player out there and get real NFL experience under his belt.

The 2018 Raiders are ruining the football season for me.

Our O-line has 2 rookie tackles playing, our "stud" LG was replaced by Feliciano, who in turn got hurt during the game, so they called me up and I played a little LG for them. At 6'0" and 175 soaking wet, I didn’t help the cause much ;)

You've got an amazing first step but you really need some work on your power and hand technique.

I knew KO was out, but didn't know Feliciano was injured during the game.

didn't watch a minute of the game.  probably going to keep this trend up, until gruden is gone.

i can't stand the guy and hate what he has turned the raiders into.

Not surprising that website exists,  the internet doesn't sleep nowadays.

I came here to post this though.   And this concerns me a bit:
From twitter - Rashaan Melvin @rmelvin30 - "I'm done trying to change my style. It is not me. Back to what I know and what got me here!! <emoji's> #22"

the sooner the revolt happens, the better.  but, it's going to take more than some scrub corner.

Yes, same agent as Mack. Jay Glazer reported the trade block rumor.
I read that Karl Joseph has the same agent too.

The fact that Gruden is blowing up a solid young corps because they don't fit his system or style or whatever suggests that he is inflexible and every day that inflexibility makes him look a lot more like John Fox instead of the #### Vermeil we were hoping for.

Seriously language filter? Fine, whatever. Richard Vermeil.

But keep Conley on the bench because that makes sense.

After the Mack debacle nothing Gruden says can be trusted so his BS about Conley having a lot of football whatever left in Oakland is little more than a load of rich creamery butter.

I'll just watch NFL Redzone for the rest of the year and not bother watching a full Raiders' game since it's so infuriating and depressing.

And, with the way the Redzone works, this means I'll see our opposing team score 5 times, the Raiders in the Red Zone 3 times and come up empty on 2 of those.

Crap, I can't win unless I go on a football embargo, but my 5 fantasy teams won't allow it. Thank god for fairy tale football!

Made me curious.... went poking around.....

Raiders CB Rashaan Melvin unhappy on bench amid poor fit

By Michael Gehlken / Las Vegas Review-Journal

October 15, 2018 - 2:41 pm

LONDON — Rashaan Melvin believes in himself.

He did before joining the Raiders organization. He will after leaving it.

In March, his belief led him to sign a one-year contract worth up to $5.5 million. The deal afforded an opportunity not only to prove he could play a full 16-game season but at the high level he showcased in the past. The Raiders stood to benefit in the short term and, if Melvin and the club were to sign an extension, perhaps long term.

It seemed a win-win.

On Sunday, Melvin played an equal number of snaps on defense as on special teams: seven.

“It was tough,” he said afterward. “I’m a competitor. I feel like I’m a starting cornerback in this league. I’ve been playing for a long time. I’ve been making plays for a long time. Today, I didn’t start. It was a coach’s decision to go in a different direction.”

How the Raiders have handled their work distribution at cornerback has taken a drastic turn the past two games. Most recently, Melvin and 2017 first-round pick Gareon Conley largely rode the bench during a 27-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Wembley Stadium. Conley did not appear at all on defense. Melvin was an afterthought, too.

Seven months ago, this was neither the fit Melvin nor the Raiders had in mind. A serious come-to-terms moment may be required for this partnership to have any legs beyond 2018 — or perhaps, even to see the end of it.

Melvin, 29, has struggled to adapt certain technical aspects the Raiders demand of their cornerbacks into his game. For example, he was unfamiliar with the “motor” technique in press man coverage. He had to learn it. He was uncomfortable employing it. He failed to deliver on expectation.

It’s now mid-October. At some point, the Raiders must adjust their scheme to maximize the player’s abilities or simply move on from the player himself. Notably, the trade deadline is Oct. 30. There also is a third alternative, one that gradually has been explored.

Sit him on the bench.

“Any time you bring a player in, you bring a player in based off what you’ve seen, what you’ve watched the player do on film,” Melvin said Sunday. “Film is a player’s resume. Once a player gets here, you want to change that, and a player takes a decline. You have to take a look at certain things. ‘OK, why is this player doing this? Why is this player not being this type of player, whatever he might have been?’ And you can tell the difference.”

Melvin mulled his situation more on Monday. He then provided a more public comment.

“I’m done trying to change my style,” Melvin wrote on Twitter. “It’s not me. Back to what I know and what got me here!!”

Internally, the Raiders prefer Daryl Worley at outside corner.

Coach Jon Gruden anticipated his return from a four-game NFL suspension, targeting Week 5 as an opportunity to mix up their cornerback rotation. Indeed, that transpired. Worley compiled a strong offseason and is a candidate for an extension by next March. He led all Raiders cornerbacks in defensive snaps during both games since his team debut.

Melvin and Conley started every game this season, up until Sunday.

Worley started and played 62 of 64 defensive snaps. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie started and played 55. Leon Hall continued his featured role at nickel corner with 54 reps. Melvin and Conley watched.

Melvin was notified Saturday in London that he wouldn’t start, he said.

“I expected us to be doing a rotation, but it didn’t work out that way,” Melvin added. “I’m just looking forward to what the next couple weeks have in store and go from there.”

The Raiders (1-5) are on bye this week.

They can decide what to do with Melvin, who had a breakout 2017 season with the Indianapolis Colts. He recorded three interceptions and 13 passes defensed in 10 games before a season-ending hand injury. He hoped 2018 would prove his place as an elite NFL cornerback.

Time is ticking.

If his modest usage continues, Melvin can part with any chance to earn the $1 million in possible incentives in his contract.

A person familiar with his deal said that Melvin can collect up to $750,000 based on the percentage of the Raiders’ defensive snaps he plays in 2018. Specifically, he separately can earn $187,500 at 60 percent, 70 percent, 80 percent and 90 percent. Sunday dropped him to 69.1 percent.

The other $250,000 is for a Pro Bowl selection.

In March, Melvin believed all goals were achievable. He still does.

“When you have high expectations for yourself and you know what kind of player you can be, what player that you once were, and you see where you’re at right now and where you were at and where you wanted to be at, it’s challenging,” Melvin said. “It’s different. Being in a situation where I’m not being myself, you take a slide with that. You know what I mean? It’s like a slap in the face. Like I said, it’s a coach’s decision.”

Raider fans need to tune out for the next 2.5 years.  This is going to get Browns ugly.  And, I mean no disrespect to the Browns.   I'm envious of their potential in the next year.   I'm talking about the 2016 and 2017 Browns.

Wise words.... Most of the players on the roster today won't be there next year. It's like rooting for a bunch of scab players. By no means will I ever jump ship but it's time to sit back and tune out until the off season. I guess if you're a super die-hard fan you can stick it out and watch the development of Gruden's rookies because those will be the only guys who will probably be on the future roster.

This is exactly what was worrisome to me as he brought in guys like Cable in the coaching staff, and as it now appears to be in terms of his play-calling and offensive system.

Every coach will come in and want to install "his guys." I don't agree with it at times, as it rewards things other than pure performance and results. But I was willing to give Gruden a chance to install his system to see if it flies.

In the meantime, though, he's not doing what I think he should - bring a balanced approach that employs his playbook, but tailoring those plays in some way to the skill set of the guys he has until he CAN get the guys that match his system, as opposed to forcing them all to be what he wants them to be on Day 1.

It seems like the inflexibility -seems to be sewing discord which is dangerous for a team that is having little success with the product they can field -- makes it that much harder to rally around that vision for the guys who stay around, if they are already starting to sour on a dogmatic approach.

This chart on deadspin is brutal for the Raiders

Ouch. Kicking a team when we're so down. But as tough as that article is, it's 100% fair.

I think I'm going to have my daily cry about the Raiders earlier in the day today....

There is still a chance that Gruden turns this team around.  I have my doubts since he quickly took a team with potential to pathetic but maybe he has a 2 year plan.  I will hang around for a couple of years as a long-time Raider fan.  But, if he is still failing miserably, I hope he quits after 4 years and $40M.  If Gruden hangs around too long while failing miserably, I would think that would impact his potential commentator and commercial opportunities.  Losers are not as wanted as winners and that SB win is getting farther and farther back while the failed seasons are piling up.

the inner tubes  are already touting our next injured first round draft choice!!  ladies and gentlemen, i give you....nick bosa

Would you leave a $10 mil/year job with zero consequence for terrible performance just because you were worried about landing a $4 mil/year job with consequences and people gunning for your job every year?

Gruden's ego will not be able to handle the complete failure for years.  He came back for the money and after 40 or 50M will walk away.

Ha! That day I did. But I'm back. It's a toxic relationship.
?

I saw my first laughable trade rumor. I don't know about Jason La Canfora's rep but he was throwing things at the wall yesterday and predicted the Raiders could get a "one plus something else" for Carr. I just now stopped laughing. ?

If Gruden could snag a "one plus something else" for the current version of Derek Carr from any team, most everything would be forgiven on the Mack deal. But I'm guessing the "something else" would be syphilis or some other communicable disease.

"And if you have all this draft capital and you get a one plus something else for Derek Carr, which I think he can -- I'll call it right now, Derek Carr to the New York Giants. At the combine."

This is old news but I am not staying on top of the Raiders like a true fan any longer.  Derrick Johnson experiment is over.  Sorry if someone mentioned that before but is there any hope with an actually "young" player showing something now?

They brought up Cabinda when they released Johnson. Cabinda showed some promise during the preseason.

Other than the $100 million offer, I thought Carr was the main reason Gruden chose the Raiders. Guess that was all just hearsay.

Lynch is out a month per Ian Rappaport tweet.  Anything to see here? Martin/Richard or stay away?
Martin will get the shot at Lynch's carries, but while I was high on the prospect of Martin, he didn't play much in preseason, and those very few carries he's gotten in the regular season have been variable and a little overunderwhelming. Had some good carries from a YPC standpoint against the Rams and MIA (5 and 4.78 respectively), but his overall YPC per game is about 3.1.

He may heat up with more consistent time on the field, but my sense is it will be TD dependent, and Richard has the safer overall floor. In PPR, Richard is the play, period.

Agree with Tom.  In PPR, give me Richard.  The Raiders will be playing from behind and Carr will be checking down.

So if we're not bad enough to get Nick Bosa with our own 1st pick, we can always take that one and Chicago's to trade up to get him? We now have a viable Mack replacement on a rookie contract and another 1st in the pocket the following year. I can see why all you guys keep saying Gruden is a genius now.

The Raiders will have a top 3 draft pick (based on their record).

Wanted to comment on a couple preseason comments (and before the Mack trade ?) I made that were obviously wrong:
* I cited the stat that in the Raiders' last 50 games with Gruden at the helm, one of the most impressive is that they hardly ever lost by 10 or more (too lazy to look up exact stats). Well, throw that one in the lake. Three of six they've lost by 16 or more.
* I thot that with Gruden they'd always come out ready to play and never be outcoached like they were in 2017. Well, throw those two in the lake too. They've been ahead at the half in half their games only to lose and they haven't seemed ready to play the last two weeks.

I have no point to all this but only to say what a brutal disappointment this season has been. Even the most severe Gruden critic probably wouldn't have predicted a 1-5 record at this point.

Trying to take the long view but given Gruden's seeming inability to judge talent and his mixed at best drafting record, I'm not sure there are brighter days ahead anytime soon.

The whole thing is snowballing...

I wanna see a game where Richard is featured at RB. The kid's an energetic runner and catcher. Give the kid a chance, Coach!

Why not see if the kid develops and get ris of some of the vets that aren't going to be here when this team has a chance of being good again in two or three seasons?   Gruden is a disaster.
Gruden is creating the oldest expansion team in NFL history. Hes implementing that highly successful 1976 Bucs franchise start up model. They should be playoff ready in 4 or 5 years.
