I at first thought they were extending the length of Cole's contract but looks like they're just revising the terms and amounts in order to avoid arbitration. In any case, Cole deserved a raise after last year.

Phils lock in Hamels at 3 years, $20.5M

The Philadelphia Phillies have avoided arbitration with World Series MVP Cole Hamels, agreeing with the left-hander on a three-year, $20.5 million contract.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that the contract will pay Hamels $4.35 million this year, $6.65 million in 2010 and $9.5 million in 2011.

If Hamels wins the Cy Young Award, his base salary would increase by $500,000 the following season. If he places second or third in the Cy Young voting, the contract would increase by $250,000 in the following season.

It's the largest average annual value ever on a multiyear contract for a starting pitcher in his first year of salary arbitration.

"We're very pleased with the fact that Cole has had an opportunity to be rewarded for his accomplishments in the past,'' Hamels' agent, John Boggs, told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. "The contract gives Cole a degree of financial security, and it didn't compromise his last year of arbitration or touch any free-agent years, which was our goal.''

With his new deal, Hamels avoids a salary-arbitration hearing in February. The Phillies still face a potential arbitration hearing with first baseman Ryan Howard, who made $10 million last year and finished second to Albert Pujols in the National League MVP voting.

In his third season, Hamels helped lead the Phillies to their second World Series championship, going 14-10 with a 3.09 ERA in the regular season.

Hamels said Sunday he wants to experience another championship in Philadelphia.

"If I'm able to go out there and repeat, I think it's just going to make it a really nice, sweet time for this baseball city," Hamels said.

Hamels, 25, has a 38-23 record with the Phillies. He's 4-1 with a 2.16 ERA in six career postseason starts.

He went 4-0 in the 2008 postseason with a 1.80 ERA, which included the clinching Game 5 in the World Series, in which he scattered five hits and two earned runs over six innings in a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hamels was a first-round pick in 2002. He made his major league debut in 2006 and led the team with 15 wins in his first full season in 2007.

"It just goes to show you how much Cole's improved the last three years and what the organization thinks of him," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "From a manager's standpoint, it makes me feel real good to know we've got him for three more years."

Information from ESPN.com's Jayson Stark and Jerry Crasnick and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Older news...

So what do you guys think of dumping Burrell for an older, more expensive guy?...

Burrell (32 years old) - 2 years for $16 MM

Ibanez (37 years old) - 3 years for $30.5 MM

Sabermetrics make baseball even more interesting[

Non-sabermetricians tend to think of the sabermetric community as a monolith. Which certainly makes it easier to throw out generalizations about moms' basements and never watching real games or talking to real players. But sabermetrics is a science of sorts, and just like every other science, if you bother to check you'll find all sorts of disagreements (most of them friendly, I'm glad to report).

Today's example … Here's J.C. "Sabernomics" Bradbury on the Phillies' new left fielder:

The Philadelphia Phillies unceremoniously dumped Pat Burrell last week by not offering him arbitration and replacing his roster spot with Raul Ibanez. Ibanez has reportedly agreed to a three-year $31.5 million contract ($10.5 million/year) with the Phillies. The differences between Ibanez and Burrell are subtle: Ibanez will be 37 next year and is left-handed, while Burrell is 32 and right-handed. They are alike in that they are both poor-fielding outfielders with good bats, both with OPS+ consistently in the 120s during the past few seasons.

With Ibanez, the Phillies will get output similar to what Burrell gave the team. Given his age, injury may be a bit more likely for Ibanez, but I project their values to be close over the next three years. I project Ibanez to be worth $46.5 million ($14.5 million/year) and Burrell to be worth $48 million ($16 million/year) over this time span. I'm unsure of what Burrell was willing to work for, but Ibanez appears to have offered the Phillies a good deal. Burrell may be worth the $14 million he earned last season with the team, but I suspect he was a going to be more selective than Ibanez, who's used to making about half the current annual salary of his new contract.

Got that? According to Bradbury -- a smart guy who has written a well-received book on the subject -- Ibanez will be worth more than $10 million per season.

But of course there are other smart guys, too. Tangotiger is a smart guy who has also written a well-received (at least by me) book, and he has Ibanez's value at around $10 million. Oh, but not per season. For all three seasons.

Older news again... literally... do we get extra points for winning with guys over 35?

Its good to see how serious he is about becoming a starter in the rotation though.

Phillies' Park quits South Korean team

SEOUL, South Korea -- Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Chan Ho Park will miss the World Baseball Classic after quitting South Korea's national team.

Park, who finalized a $2.5 million, one-year contract with the Phillies last week, said Tuesday he needed to focus on trying to become a starter for the World Series champions.

“I'm very sorry to my fans and the people who wanted me to play in the WBC. As I'm going to the Phillies, I will do my best there to achieve my goal of becoming a starter.” -- Phillies pitcher Chan Ho Park

"I'm very sorry to my fans and the people who wanted me to play in the WBC," said Park, who briefly left the podium after breaking into tears. "I won't be playing for the national team anymore."

The 35-year-old right-hander said he was unsure about his status with the Phillies and needed to focus on securing a spot with the team.

"As I'm going to the Phillies, I will do my best there to achieve my goal of becoming a starter," Park said.

The second World Baseball Classic is scheduled for March 5-23, with 16 teams competing.

At the inaugural tournament in 2006, Japan beat Cuba for the title, with South Korea and the Dominican Republic reaching the semifinals.

Madsen signed too. That was a nice signing.
Updated the first post. This I like to hear after the Vet years where players couldn't get away from us fast enough...
The deal is unusual because Madson is a Scott Boras client. And Boras clients rarely sign extensions that give away their free-agent years. But Madson has spent his whole career in the Phillies' organization, lives in the Philadelphia area year-round and pushed for a contract that would keep him in Philadelphia beyond this season.

Nice signings by the front office. I'm glad they didn't have to go through the ugliness of an arbitration hearing with Cole, I don't think it would've helped the relationship. Good move with Madson, now Lidge has his setup man for his three years too. I heard on the radio today they expect Shane and Werth to sign before going to a hearing as well, but not Howard.

Really looking forward to seeing this offense with Ibanez. Should be a more consistent offense, and if this guy can produce in Seattle, then what will he do behind our guys? Maybe it's January hope, but I'm excited about this move.

I like the Ibanez move for 2009. I think it might hurt come 2011. I would have taken Pat back at 2/16, but I think management made up its mind a while ago that it didn't want him back regardless.

I do hope Charlie sets his lineups so that lefties Utley/Howard/Ibanez aren't batting all in a row - though that means Werth will have to put up the numbers to justify hitting 3rd, 4th, or 5th.

Didn't Burrell reject 2/22 earlier in the year?I think that they thought that he would not re-sign at their price, even if they wanted him.

I know there was no offer once the season ended, contrary to media reports. Dunno if there was an offer made during the season.

Who's winning the fifth spot? Does Happ have any sort of value at this point in time in a deep keeper?
Rotowold right now has the order as:1 Cole Hamels (L) 2 Brett Myers ® 3 Jamie Moyer (L) 4 Joe Blanton ® 5 Kyle Kendrick ® 6 J.A. Happ (L) 7 Chan Ho Park ® 8 Carlos Carrasco ® 9 Rodrigo Lopez ® But Kendrick has been getting smoked so my guess would be that it's Happ and then Park if Happ does bad. Carrasco doesn't seem ready just yet based on his ST numbers.

Can't win 'em all I guess.

At least Myers settled down a bit after getting shelled for two innings.

Actually had a glimmer of hope there in the 9th. Howard really should have been looking fastball on that 3-2 count when he took it right down the middle for the K. Oh well.

Went to the game. I don't want to take all the credit but I reversed my cap in the 6th.
I'll do you one better.Went to opening night stayed the whole game.Went yesterday - left after the Top of the 7th because I was freezing my balls off.

It was brutal weather but I figured there wasn't beating the traffic anways around rush hour. Glad people left early tho, it made an easy drive home.

Hamels vs. Jason Marquis at Coors today.

Assuming Cole's arm is OK, there aren't many pitching matchups that look more lopsided on paper.

I know it's only been one round through the rotation but every single starting pitcher has gotten destroyed. This is a very disturbing trend. I thought their staff was mediocre at best last season but just happened to get hot at the right time. Not sure if that can happen 2 seasons in a row.

What a mess this team is right now. I know they're perennial slow starters but something just doesn't feel right about this team. The rotation is a joke. I thought they were overrated last year but happened to get hot during the playoffs. They'll have many comebacks this year but no team can afford to be down by 3 or 4 runs after the first 3 innings every game.

Wow! What a game by the Phightins' today! Watch out - now, we'll lose 8-1 tomorrow night to a guy who just arrived from Nats Double AA and throws a 3 hitter.

I like this Ibanez guy.
Yes. He's made a great impression thus far. He's already made a handful of catches I don't think we've ever seen from Pat the Bat. Plus, he's having the same kind of start Pat had, offensively, last spring. From what I've been hearing, Ibanez is a decent guy too. Gotta love the MLB network. :loco:

gotta love it when the sp with the lowest ERA still has an ERA over 5. yet somehow this team is 10-8.
No doubt this team has the heart of a champion but there is absolutely no way they can continue to make these type of comebacks consistently down by 3-5 runs in the late innings. Just doesn't seem possible.......... . Fortunately, the rest of the NL East looks like a bunch of gutless chokers so I'm not sure how this team doesn't make the playoffs.

28-20 and a half game up in the division at the end of May. Last year at this time they were 7 over .500 and a half game out.

Continuing their quest to be the most left-handed team ever, they have called up Antonio Bastardo to fill MYers' spot in the rotation, so now they have 4 lefties in the rotation(!)

You guys better deal for an arm before you fall too far behind, good thing for you guys the NL East sucks.

Glad the Phillies finally got back out of town. Hopefully the All Star team will be full of Phillies so they can throw the game and get "Away Field Advantage" if they make it back to the Series. And how are we still ahead of the Mets?

Here's some points from Jayson Stark to put the home slump in perspective...

• Here's how hard it is to lose 22 home games by Father's Day: There have been six teams in the expansion era that didn't lose 22 home games all season (not counting strike seasons): the '61 Yankees (16), '75 Reds (17), '98 Yankees (19), '62 Giants (21), '69 Orioles (21) and (whaddayaknow) the '77 Phillies (21).

• To repeat a note from Friday's blog, no team in history has had a season in which it had a losing record at home but won 70 percent of its road games. But the Phillies are working on it. They're 13-22 at home but 23-9, .719, on the road.

• No offense should be asked to come from behind as often as the Phillies' lineup has been forced to do that this year. This team has trailed at some point in 52 of its 67 games this season. That means, even though the Phillies are in first place, they've trailed in more games this season than the Pirates or Royals (51 apiece). And even the Nationals, who are already 27 games under .500, have only trailed in 58 games.

• If it weren't for the Phillies' closer issues, they might be leading the NL East by eight games. In their last 27 games, their closer (Brad Lidge or Ryan Madson) has either contributed a blown save, a loss or both in seven of them. Of their 11 losses in June, seven have been hung on the bullpen. And our friends at Inside Edge report that Madson hasn't gotten a single swing-and-miss on his fastball since Lidge was placed on the disabled list.

• Oh, and one more thing. To repeat a recent Elias Says note, the Phillies have lost more games this year that they led in the ninth inning or later (six) than any team in baseball. Last year, of course, they lost the fewest games like that of any team in baseball (zero).

• Finally, the Phillies just got swept at home in back-to-back series by the Blue Jays and Orioles. Here's why that shouldn't happen to a team with win-the-World-Series aspirations: The Orioles hadn't swept a road series of three games or more since May 30, 2007 (at Kansas City), which was 53 road series ago. And the Blue Jays hadn't swept a road series of three games or more since May 15, 2008, which was 29 road series ago.

Unbelievable how they are still in first. No bullpen, streaky offense. Amazing
Have you guys seen the other teams in that division? The Phils are far and away the best team in a brutal division. Although I suspect the Mets will close the gap when they recover from all their injuries.

LOL - I know but to be 2-8 in your last 10 and barely lose ground we're lucky the entire div sucks

Will be at the games on Fri and Sat in Toronto!

Updated my attire today with a maroon utley shirt, light blue hamels shirt, and red howard shirt. Besides my world series shirt, my freddy garcia shirt has become a bit outdated.

I love that they just kill the Rays pitching.

Gotta love Blanton owning them again last night as well (granted he took the loss).

The problem is that everyone is killing the Phil's pitching this year. They just don't look like a world champion right now. Also, can they find ANYONE better than Taschner?

I don't know if it's just the world series hangover but this team doesn't look right. The bullpen is a joke again and they don't seem to have the clutch hitting that carried them last year. I know we're not even half way through but this team just has way too many holes for me to not be worried. As bad as the Mets have choked the last couple years, I think that the adverity they're dealing with will help them overtake the Phils this year.

Interestingly, on this date last year they were the exact same number of games over .500 (44-39).

Had a good laugh with my friend in the 1st inning that Charlie should have just taken the whole Phillies team. Pedro will make the throw that Wright missed and Howard makes the catch that was an error on Pujols.

Maybe the Phillies beat the AL :)

Yes and with the Phils current pitching staff, the AL scores 20+ runs...........
