***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (5 Viewers)

The return for Price was Smyly, Franklin and Adames. Not quite what Rube was looking for in a Hamels return. Shows just how delusional he is.
Really apples and oranges. TB is a small budget team that knew (and everyone else knew) they couldn't afford to re-sign Price. They opted for those lesser names because they're under team control for several more years.

Hamels is the exact opposite. He's under team control for several more years and given how he's pitched and what the new contracts have looked like, he's almost a bargain.

I don't blame Ruben for holding out for more for a guy you can build a team around.

Now not unloading Byrd, Burnett, Bastardo et al for lottery tickets like low level Class A prospects is something totally different that you can unload on Amaro for.

Are we sure that those 3 guys could even get that type of return? It seems like teams this year were very reluctant to part with prospects. Amaro was in a really tough position (albeit a position created by himself).

Agreed. Didn't help that most of these guys blew up in the last few weeks. Relievers are never going to have a ton of value and Bastardo and Papelbon had some terrible outings. No reason to just give Bastardo away. Put Paps on waivers and see if someone is dumb enough to claim him.

Burnett hurt with some bad pitching and his contract isn't great. Phils would probably have had to eat some of that for a low level prospect at that. No sense to pick up 50% + for a complete gamble.

Byrd was probably the most movable but he had a NTC to KC and Seattle and wanted his 2016 option picked up. Phils asking price was astronomical but the sources of what offers they were getting were also ridiculous. Trade market for these older guys has now become a salary dump type situation.

Lee is/was hurt so that made him tough to move. Hamels is tough to move, especially at the deadline. Most of the top prospects seem to be on the bad teams who aren't looking to take on that contract. No idea what LAD's offer was but I think after Lester/Price/Scherzer sign, we'll see what value he has.

Didn't hear much about Rollins/Ruiz moving. Put the whole team on waivers and see what happens. Hope someone picks up Howard and Paps and say goodbye.

I meant it more as get something, anything for those guys.

But if you're going to set the bar too high, it would be for Hamels, not those other guys.

Rosenthal: Sources: Hamels claimed on revocable trade waivers by unidentified club. #Phillies have 48 hours to work out a trade or pull him back.

Uh oh. :scared:

It seems unlikely Amaro will be able to work out a deal to his satisfaction since he has considerably less leverage than he had a week ago.

I'm sure he will appreciate the aggressiveness of this general manager and get something done.

That's why I'm hiding behind the couch. 97.5 saying it's the Cubs and Hamels will accept a trade to go.

what in the world do the dodgers want with him?
Maybe they thought their current roster was too good.
They had two dead bodies they needed to get rid of and figured they could cover it up without Ruben even knowing.

Roberto Hernandez gone to the Dodgers for 2 players.

I'd really like to get rid of Bastardo. That dude is horrible.
Ruben is hoping the Dodgers mistakenly add Corey Seager or Joc Pederson to their list of people we can have.

Read that If the Phils would've invested in the Cuban market instead of extending Howard, they could have Cespedes, Puig, Abreu and Soler. All of them. For the same price as Howard. Hindsight and all, but still. :topcat:

I've heard reports that the Phils are the frontrunners on Rusney Castillo. Reports yesterday came out saying they were the main team, followed by a report saying they were not in. A report followed that saying a lot of teams saw the "not in" report as the Phils downplaying how hard they are pursuing him.

Red Sox, Tigers and Giants are the other main players.

Ruben Amaro, so clever.

Saw Nola pitch in Reading yesterday. He looked looked decent. Had one tough inning, but fought through it and gave up 1 run in 5 innings. Good control and command. Definitely much better than the Seawolves' starter and clearly the best pitcher of the day.

The rest of the team just has nothing to get excited about. Jake Fox has had a good year, but is 32 and seemingly will never get it. Built kind of like Matt Stairs. Carlos Alonso is the 2B and he hit some balls hard, but his batted-ball profile is not too exciting. I am surprised that he doesn't strike out more. He is Kiko Alonso's brother.

Where you live Larry? I'm 20 minutes from the stadium in Reading.

An hour away, in Ardmore.

Was going to go to Philles-Cards, but looking at the seats, my 9-year-old daughter wanted to be closer to the field, plus they had a bunch of activities for the last home game of the season.

After the Fightins scored a run, my daughter declared that they were better than the regular Phillies.

Sandberg always leaves Hamels in too long, and tonight he pulls him at 84 pitches. Anyone else noticed Hamels didn't hand him the ball but flipped it at him? lol

Nice. Can't wait till my little guy and gal get older (currently 3). Probably will get season tickets then. They have a ton for kids to do to keep them from being too bored.

None of the players seem to like him, but Hamels was out of line here. He blew the lead and couldnt get anyone out. It was time.

Another year milestone despite the season of suckitude.

First ever combined no hitter in team history.

It's so sad to see how irrelevant this team has become even in Philly. I don't even hear a single peep about them on any sports talk shows. The fans truly don't care anymore. FU Amaro

Nope

They have reached a fate worse than anger. Apathy. When the fans don't care if you win or lose, they're not watching either way, then you need to make drastic changes.

So freaking long ago. :kicksrock:

Friend of mine who doesn't really follow baseball asked me last week if the Phillies were in the race. I said #### no. He said it's funny, because he looks at the team and seems pretty much the same as the championship team. I said, yeah, that's the ####### problem, because it's 6 years later.

Read somewhere today, since Amaro took over the team, after their 2008 World Series win, they have gotten worse every single year. Haven't double checked to see how true this is, but here I what I read

2008 WS Champs

2009 WS Losers

2010 NLCS Losers

2011 NLDS Losers

2012 .500 Winning % - 3RD PLACE

2013 .451 Winning % - 4TH PLACE

2014 .451 Winning % - 5TH PLACE
Although they did improve their pythagorean Win Pct. by .044 points this year. So there's that.

It was uncanny the gradual rise and then gradual fall.

Pythagoras is only 2,584 years old and is a free agent this winter

[insert Ruben Amaro will sign him for multi year deal joke here]

Eskin: .@Phillies Pres and CEO Dave montgomery pushed out. Limited partner John Middleton trying 2 buy majority. Howard out.

6:33pm - 2 Oct 14

Maybe Cole too?

ashame for Montgomery to go out this way, not that I didn't want him out. Middleton is aggressive, which is great, but might be a little bit of a nut.
Getting vehement denials now from the organization saying the story is false.
