So, is it going to be Genesis on Halloween?
That is the rumor.
Those types of rumors never seem to come true. I doubt that people will know until they get the phishbill.
It's fun to speculate.
Totally fun. I would love to see Zappa's Hot Rats, Pink Floyds Meddle or anything from Led Zep.
Hot Rats is awesome. The best thing he ever did by a mile for my money.Trey has said this one's going to be a challenge for him especially, which kind of points toward an album by a band with a guitar god. If they were doing a proggy one with crazy time signatures, I wouldn't think he'd say that.

I think this is the very reason he'd say that. When I think "guitar god' I think Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc.. mostly blues-based. When I think "proggy" I think Zappa, Genesis, Rush, etc, which would all be more difficult to learn to play without fumbles.

My point was that albums like that would be difficult for the entire band, not just him.

I'll agree, though I think Trey has had by far the most difficulty with Phish's more "proggy" repertoire since the reunion (and even before, like in the early 2000s). Mike seems to have not lost a step from the olden days, or has even improved, and Page is able to keep up. Fishman sounds a lot better in 2010 than he did in 2009.

haven't heard or seen any rumors. i need to cracking on that, i suppose.

wife's speculation: "Born to Run" playing on the Jersey theme.

my speculation: "Joe's Garage" as it has been runored often in the past.

if it is indeed Genesis, then "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" makes the most sense as the band tends to cover double-albums. and, yes, it would be a challenge for Trey.

I'd love to see them do a Little Feat album.
Sailin' Shoes would be awesome. They've covered Time Loves a Hero since the early days, Little Feat is not out of the realm of possibilities. The below Trey quote though makes it seem like it will be something they don't have experience with -- like the albums they choose tend to seep into their playing later on, and he says the one they've picked will have large effect on his playing. My bet is something newer like TV on the Radio, MGMT or something like that.

“ 'Remain in Light,' at the time we did it, it hadn’t gained the notoriety it’s developed since," he said. "It was fun to come out onstage and know that people were going to discover it. It’s really a jigsaw puzzle to figure that record out. But once we did it, we found ourselves layering in background vocals a little more in that style. It starts to seep into your DNA as a musician. You pick up something from each album.”

As for “Quadrophenia,” the Who’s 1973 rock opera suggested by keyboardist Page McConnell, “I had never really listened to it that much,” Anastasio said. “That was in ’96, and we had just started playing arenas. When we played it in the big room, I got it. All their songs just resonate in these big arenas. They kind of invented that: that huge rolling wall of sound, played through huge arena sound systems. And once you’ve played something like that live, it starts to affect how you write songs.”

Although Anastasio held fast against revealing which album gets the nod for Halloween 2010, he did offer a clue that might get fans chattering.

“This year,” he said, “this one’s for me. The one we picked, I’m going to get more out of this as a musician than I ever have before. Three songs into it, I called everybody and told them, ‘None of the other ones -- I wouldn’t think, hopefully -- will have nearly the effect on my playing this one’s going to.' ”

Longshot:

Could be a Rage against Machine album. The Tom Marello sound would certainly be a challenge for Trey and they've covered "Killing in the Name" this fall.

Good call.
I haven't been keeping up with the Halloween choices for a long time, but could In the Aeroplane Over the Sea be a longshot possibility as well, for the same reason? They covered the eponymous track this summer, and in addition to that beautiful, lilting tune, it features a complex "suite" type song with differing melodies (King of Carrot Flowers 1, 2 and 3) bit of weirdness with space to jam (Oh Comely) and two killer guitar-driven rockers (Holland 1945 and Ghost) That quote about "this one's for me" made me wonder. It obviously would be a choice more about him- he clearly loves indie hipster type music- than the fans, many of whom probably wouldn't recognize the album.

That quote made me think of that album, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, and Pavement.

They'll be playing Zappa. Mike shot down Joe's Garage and they've all but decided to roll with Sheik Yerbouti. Physical Graffiti is a backup plan and they've discussed playing it in its entirety on New Year's day.

:confirmed:

Now I do know that this Boardwalk Hall place has one of, if not the largest, pipe organs in the world. If you watch Phish's cover of Watcher of the Skies it's not hard to imagine them breaking out some Genesis. Lots of organ going on. Return of the Giant Country Horns? King Crimson would also be epic.

All that said, it's Zappa. I know people.

or maybe it's Electric Ladyland.

I just sold my Halloween ticket for $260. Now I'm thinking I want to go.

Utica tonight!
whoa what a show, wasnt there but listened today and they are back to 94-95 form in this one.
Fall 95 - Best tour in the histories of tours. Trey was never better. On several occasions I helped him out with his pre-show medication.
Nov/Dec 1995 was def a crazy phish moment in time. Unless you were there it is impossible to describe. Frantic, crazy, tight, insane, humorous, simple. I also liked the funk era of 98 but nothing compares to that tour. Everything hit perfect. Every venue and seemingly every song was placed perfectly. Lots of jokes, lots of stupid covers, lots of hidden things.

This was the ultimate time to see Phish. The chess match w/ audience tour. Insanity. I remember going to Clifford Ball in 1996 and thinking that the band had jumped the shark, saw them once more in 1997, then not again until 2009.I have to say though that seeing them now is tons of fun, and the music sounds a lot better than anything I've listened to from 1997 - 2004. The "funk" era is not my favorite.

If you missed Big Cypress then you missed a life changer. Simply put it was historic on every level.

Definitely the best post-hiatus Phish show I've seen. Just unbelievable.
Just checked out the antelope and bowie. Totally dialed in, trey sounds awesome. What was the deal, guyute / wilson teases throughout set 2?
someone brought a "guyutica" sign, so after guyute they kept mixing into everythingSplit->have mercy->piper->split is sublime

Manchester last night may have topped Utica.Holy hell, what a setlist:

10/26/10 Verizon Wireless Arena--Manchester, NHI: After Midnight, The Sloth, Alumni Blues > A Letter to Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues, Mellow Mood, Access Me, Llama, All of These Dreams, The Curtain (With), Scent of a Mule, ASIHTOS, It's Ice, Walls of the CaveII: Possum, Light > Mike's Song > Simple > Makisupa Policeman > Night Nurse* > Makisupa Policeman > The Wedge, Ghost > Mango Song > Weekapaug Groove E: Show of Life*First Time Gregory Issacs cover

any new buzz on the halloween cover album? i can't find anything online. my wife is bumming about the possibility of a Zappa album. she is holding out hope for Springsteen or Led Zepellin.

jambi seems to be an authority on this--any news?

Lots of speculation but my typical "sources" for such matters are completely stumped. Seems like the band has that info on tight lockdown.

I've been hearing rumblings about a number of albums - The four most often listed:

* Layla

* Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

* Joe's Garage

* Electric Ladyland

It could be anything at this point.

While I like Lamb lies down I think it would be a horrible selection. Joes garage or Layla would be okay but no friggin way on Electric Ladyland. I would much rather see Hot Rats.

Phish - Best Band Ever

No debate, no comparison. There is not a band around today that could pull off what they did last night. No question.

Tonight may set all sorts of peaks for them as a group

last night:

Set 1: Kill Devil Falls, Cavern > Foam, Guelah Papyrus, Chalk Dust Torture -> Whole Lotta Love[1] > Chalk Dust Torture, Ha Ha Ha, Walk Away, Wolfman's Brother[2] -> Undermind > Bathtub Gin[3], The Squirming Coil

Set 2: Tube > Possum[4] > Tweezer[3] -> Heartbreaker[5] -> Ramble On -> Thank You[5] -> Tweezer -> Stairway to Heaven[5], Halley's Comet > Also Sprach Zarathustra > David Bowie, Show of Life, Backwards Down the Number Line > Good Times Bad Times

Encore: Sleeping Monkey > Tweezer Reprise[3]

[1] One verse only.

[2] Vocal jam.

[3] Whole Lotta Love tease.

[4] Whole Lotta Love and Sneakin' Sally teases.

[5] Phish debut; Incomplete.

Notes: Whole Lotta Love was incomplete (one verse only) and was played for the first time since March 1, 1991 (1,033 shows). Wolfman's contained a vocal jam. Gin, Possum and Tweezer and Tweezer Reprise all contained Whole Lotta Love teases. The incomplete versions of Heartbreaker, Thank You, and Stairway to Heaven were all Phish debuts. Ramble On was played for the first time since August 12, 1998 (305 shows). After Stairway to Heaven, Trey joked, "Happy Halloween! See you all next year." Appropriately, Whole Lotta Love was also the post-show music. From the soundcheck, Ramble On and the second and third versions of Whole Lotta Love were incomplete. Destiny Unbound (in the soundcheck) was played by only Mike and Fish.

best band ever? i don't know, maybe they should be in the conversation with the Beatles and such but their lack of mass popularity and their quirky songs don't lend themselves to that kind of title.

best touring band in the world? no question. last night's show was, indeed, something that only Phish could pull off. we're even more stoked for tonight. wife's sticking with a springsteen album, i'm calling electric ladyland. no matter what they play, it's gonna be a historic show.

The Beatles couldnt play 1/4 of Phish songs. YEM, Stash, Gumbo......forget it.Lack of mass popularity means nothing actually. They brought 100,000 people to the middle of the Everglades Swamp. I doubt there is another band in history that could that.

I pray its not Bruce. Just dont see the appeal of Phish playing springsteen. I think it is most def Zepp. Last night was just something to throw people off.

It's a great live album. Have Phish ever done a live or compilation album before for Halloween?

Strange choice. Something weird about them doing a live album. Listened to it for the first time in maybe ever this morning. Looking forward to hearing them do it.

most of the reviews say "meh".

Still will give it a listen.

I have a feeling they may sneak a Zep album in one of the next shows a la Dark Side of the Moon since the overwhelming fan choices this time around was Zepplin.

We'll never know, of course, but you're selling the Beatles waaaay short here. They were/are superb musicians. I would put nothing past them. I do agree with you that mainstream popularity means nothing. Plus, at this point, a big mainstream hit likely isn't happening anyway, which is fine. Bouncing is about as close as they got there.

I love Phish, and I would agree they are probably the best touring band ever. They've also done something I've never really seen another band do on a consistent basis - they make their entire catalog relevent. Even the silliest, most unlistenable songs become special when they play them live.
