***OFFICIAL*** Pick #5 Thread (1 Viewer)

I'm picking #5 in two of my three high-stakes leagues (third hasn't drawn draft order yet.) The scoring systems/lineup configurations are quite different, so very different strategies are involved. I'll throw them both out there since they should represent close to both ends of the fantasy scoring spectrum and most of your leagues, fellow #5 pickers, should fall somewhere in between.

League 1 - TD heavy. Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR/TE, no flex, no TE required. All TDs 6 pts, passing yards 1/50 yds, 1/20 rushing, 1/15 receiving, no PPR. With it being kind of TD heavy and with 6 pt/TDs, QBs go early and often. Last year, Rodgers, Brees, and Peyton were the top 3 picks before Peterson went 4th. I suspect that 2-3 QBs could go in the first 4 picks.

League 2 - more conventional FBG-type scoring. Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB/WR/TE flex. Passing TDs 5 pts/rest are 6 pts. 1/25 yds passing, 1 pt/10 yds rush/rec. 1 PPR.

In league 1, I'm preparing for two eventualities. One is that ADP, McCoy, and Charles go in the top 4, likely along with Manning. That leaves me with the options of Brees (highest VBD score by a decent margin), Calvin Johnson (with no TE required, he's the only real non-QB/RB choice) or the choice of Forte/Lynch/Lacy. The other is that 2-3 QBs go in the top 4 and I'm left with Peterson and possibly Shady on the board along with Calvin. In this scenario, I almost certainly go RB.

So, the first scenario is better for discussion. Do you take Brees, who represents the greatest week-to-week edge of anyone on the board? Do you take Calvin, who has the second highest VBD score? Or do you throw VBD out the window and grab one of the few almost-guaranteed 10+ TD backs? Having a Lacy or Lynch is big in this league with TDs at such a premium.

In League 2, it's fairly certain that Charles, McCoy, and Peterson are going 1-2-3. The guy drafting 4th is a bit of a wildcard, he could take anyone. So, for the sake of argument, let's assume that Forte, Johnson, Graham, and all the QBs are available. I'm very unlikely to take Manning here. Is Forte a no-brainer in this scenario? If he goes #4, do you go with Calvin, Graham, or go to the next RB, maybe Lacy in a PPR format?

The question at the 5 spot is if to take the last of the top backs most likely Forte or ZigZag at this point and take CJ. I don't see any other options unless you must have Graham.

Way I see it: Charles, McCoy, ADP go 1,2,3. The true wild card is pick 4. Does he go Forte or does he make the 1st zigzag and Take CJ.

If he takes CJ you go Forte. If he goes Forte, you go CJ.

Personally, I'd prefer Forte.

PPR - Forte

Non-PPR - Lacy

Mathematically Calvin is the best choice but it's difficult to pass up a stud feature back.

After thinking about this more I'm leaning towards Lacy at 5 (even in PPR) - even if Forte is available. I think Lacy has the higher ceiling and sometimes you win by being bold.

I will take Forte over Lacy in PPR for sure, but am starting to lean Lacy over Calvin. I might take Lacy over Forte in the TV heavy league.

All TDs 6 points, 9 points over 40yds; standard yardage start Q/B/B/R/R/R/T/F; PPR with .5 PPR for RBs

Taking Calvin and leaning to a top 3 QB if available in the second. I like the idea of dominating at two positions. Will have to take a ton of speculative RBs and hope a few hit.

In my league, I expect Charles and McCoy to go 1-2, and I know for a fact that the #4 guy will take Peterson if he's there (big Vikings fan - loves AD). So if #3 takes Forte, I take Calvin. If #3 takes Calvin, I take Forte. If #3 throws me us a curveball and takes Peterson, #4 will take Calvin and I take Forte.

I love Forte in this offense. He was always good for 45-55 catches before Marc Trestman, and last year he had 75 catches. That's gold. In our scoring system, the only thing that separated Forte (336 pts) from Charles (378 pts) last season was the TD difference (12 v. 19), and I think most people here agree that another 19 TD season for Charles is unlikely. But I don't think Forte's 12 TDs is an unreasonable expectation again this year.

I would still take Calvin over Forte given the choice, but it's close, and I probably won't have to make the choice since my decision will be made for me based on previous picks.

After reviewing some drafts that have been done already I am convinced that Lacy is the guy to take at 5.

RB is drying up so fast and there seems to be plenty of tier 1quality WR through the first 3-4 rounds..

Where are we on this?

The 4th pick will be pretty tricky for a lot of folks.

Then, at No. 5:

Forte

Calvin

Lacy? No.

Lynch? No

Manning

Brees

Rodgers

Graham

Any other candidates here?

This seems like the right answer.
