What 200k votes between WI, Michigan and PA?

She won the popular vote.

Yeah, Comey and a week of horrible press right before the election played no part.   :coffee:

Clinton going to win the popular vote?
Assuming she does, which looks probable. That would mean that more Americans have voted for the Republican candidate exactly once since 1992, yet we'll have 3 Republican terms in that time to show for it.

Assuming he wins, I hope and pray that he understands and appreciates the tremendous responsibility that has been bestowed upon him, that he surrounds himself with qualified advisors, and that he works to achieve good in this world.
My exact sentiments. Well said BB.

He is our President Elect and I now stand behind him.

I love America and regardless of who won last night. Democracy always wins.

It was a win for Democracy.

Period.

So all these college educated whites are embarrassed/ashamed to tell people they are voting for Trump?

Got to think these people were on the fence holding their nose to begin with.  Maybe the "reopening" of the case and the week that ensued pushed them over the edge.  Coupled with the microscope taken off of Trump.

Brutal way to lose.

I'm not that into politics,  how is the electoral college still a thing?

Second election in less than twenty years where the popular vote doesn't win?

Seems dumb

I wonder if the media will take any responsibility for what just happened? It seems pretty clear to me that they greatly enabled Trump during the primaries. He got very favorable media coverage during that time and a WHOLE lot more airtime than any other candidate. If they hadn't given him so much favorable coverage, and they'd treated him neutrally or like they did during the General, there is no way he would have won the nomination and the chance to win like he did. Their coverage of Trump during the primaries was one of the largest contributing factors that lead to a Trump Presidency IMO.

It is part of the Constitution.  The Constitution is hard to change.

Only dumb when your side loses (and mine did this time).
Sure,  and maybe the popular vote would look totally different if people who are essentially disenfranchised on the electoral level came out to vote...  i.e. republicans on the west coast and east coast,  dems in the midwest, etc.

It's hard to say.

The entire idea though really feels so antiquated and dumb and probably looks dumb internationally

I love the electoral college.   It makes things so much more interesting.  Politics is such a dumpster fire to begin with.  Don't take away the one thing that's exciting.

It would be a Democrat landslide.

I think the key to the election result is going to boil down to college-educated white woman voting for Trump due to rising healthcare costs.

45% went for Trump.  Stunned.
Heard late last night that Trumps % of black, Latino and women voters went way up in the last month. Way higher than anticipated. Big part of it was blamed on the Obama care fiasco. Clintons corruption scandals, and the healthcare cost concerns were just too much to overcome.

What am I missing?  Is there really that much hate in America?  I will take off my hat to Donald he beat not only the DNC but the RNC as well.  I hope that Trump if anything throws a wrench into same old same old politics.  Hope that Donald can move the country the forward.  Hopefully this is the end of the RNC and DNC as we know it.  Time for some new blood I guess.  What am I missing?
It's not hate.

There is a lot of hate. That was the a driving force behind Trump.

It's going to be really interesting to see what kind of cabinet Trump puts together.  It's hard to imagine anybody worth employing wanting a job in this administration, but I think you can make a really good argument that it's morally imperative that good people do whatever they can to come in and mitigate the damage.  Trump is bad enough, but I just can't even comprehend Trump plus a bunch of hacks like Guiliani and Christie.

Watched MSNBC last night even though I despise their network & bias.   R. Maddow was a blabbering, emotional wreck & was seconds from breaking down.   CAL(chuckled a little)

It would seem very unTrumplike to hire experts that would work to constrain him. We're getting hacks.  And if Trump screws up and picks a non-hack by accident, that person won't be around very long.

I've never watched "the view" before.. But I think I'll set the DVR to catch it today as the meltdown should be epic!!

Wonder if they will show Whoopi and others packing their bags??

Personally I am sick to my stomach because of this (not beating a dead horse with why because it doesn't matter now) but the people voted and people like me and everyone else have to get over it and move forward. I agree 100% with the above post. Those of us who don't like it can vote again in 4 years.

I think when historians looks back on this, they will focus on the free trade issue.  In the long term, public sentiment on free trade goes back and forth.  Free trade surged in the late 1800s / early 1900s.  Then there was a backlash.  Free trade got curtailed, tensions rose, and eventually WWI broke out.  After WW2, free trade started to make a return.  It peaked in the 1990s./early 2000s.  After that, you had a backlash regarding free trade.  The Greek economic crisis, economic isolation of Russia, Brexit, and now Donald Trump wins the white house by demonizing free trade.

Historians are probably looking at how free trade is going downhill as a possible prelude to the next big war.  If that actually happens, this election will be pointed to as a major turning point leading to it.

Both parties have had a hand in helping to kill free trade as well.  Trump may be about to kill NAFTA and rework trade deals, but Obama tried to economically isolate Russia.  Both sides are doing it.

Because only a handful of states would really matter without the electoral college and some Midwest states would get totally ignored - and we are a nation of states. Is it perfect? No, but just going by popular vote isn't perfect either.

Don't only a handful of states matter now?

Candidates don't even go into or bother advertising in states where they are a slam dunk to win... only spending time in the few swing states.

So I'm not sure how that argument holds up Otto

I got some bad news for you. The silent majority was the educated white people. They all voted for Trump too. The college educated Trump voter was just smart enough to not put a bumper sticker on his car to avoid the vandalism and violence the democrat party likes to inflict on people who disagree with them.
Sorry, what I meant was...

Dear sexist, racist, homophobic America--

#### off.

But those non-swing states still matter. They still get a say in the process. If not for the electoral college they would matter a whole lot less.

Winning the popular vote would be fairly meaningless as well, especially here where we are talking a difference of about 200,000 votes.

Living in a non-swing state (KS), I think it would be hard for us to matter less than we do now. Electoral college needs to go.

While I am trying my hardest to be in Todem's camp and try to take a deep breath, my impulse this morning is to be in your camp.
I know it's hard. My two closet friends are staunch democrats (we have played in a rock band together going on 25 years now), and are very bitter this morning.

I told them both.....take a deep breath and hey let's go write some songs about it and channel that energy in a better way then making yourself sick over it.

Seeing the news is oddly similar to watching Paul George's leg snap. Or a hyper-extended knee. Something unnatural and unsettling about it. Just hope this ####### doesn't get us all killed.
