Can't blame Punk.
The guy is more over/better worker/brings in more $$ at this point than Brock/Batista/HHH. The most ironic thing will be that Punk will likely be that exact part timer in the near future.
I don't think he's got a shot in hell at MMA at this point (at UFC level). If he's satisfied working in the lower organizations, good for him. Listening to a recent interview, I don't think he has the desire to start at the bottom and work his way up at this point in his life. Maybe Dana will throw him a token TUF spot -- would be nice for ratings. I just don't see him doing much otherwise.
Even if not in WWE, he'll make a killing on independents/appearances at this point. And he's as good as there's been as far as marketing himself.

I'm actually saddened. I don't blame him at all either. He IS "The Best in the World" bar none, right now and has been for quite some time. He is just excellent at everything within the wrestling world.
I get goosebumps watching him come out to a Chicago crowd. It's nuts.

I don't blame Phillip, I think his frustration is justified. But I am bummed for sure. He's far and away my favorite entertainer on the roster.

I think Punk and Batista could have a good program together. They can tie in the fact that Batista is 'the reason' Punk won his 1st world heavyweight championship. (Beating up Edge to cash in MITB).
HHH/Punk wouldn't be last match on Mania, but it would be one of the co-main events. So you're not the last match? Deal with it. As I remember, they did recently give him the belt for 400+ days in a row.
He'll be back eventually. I don't see any sort of MMA career panning out (if he tries).

Yep. I don't blame him either. Guys kill their bodies all year only to see part timers headline Wrestlemania. If this is true and he really is gone, it will cost them my subscription to their new network, and I'll probably stop watching entirely. Even gossip rags like TMZ are picking up this story. If it is a work, hats off to the WWE and Punk for a convincing one.
Buddy of mine sent me a report that said Punk lost his mind about Batista being given the title shot when he's not even in shape enough to work a 10 minute program right now. Meanwhile guys like Punk, Bryan and Cena work 250+ days a year for the company.

Even if it's not a work, you would hope that WWE brass are smart enough to realize they screwed up. Could turn it into a pretty awesome storyline for a long time.
ETA: this is why no competition is a very very bad thing

Jericho has pretty much stuck with wrestling past at this point in his podcasts (and hockey talk with his dad). It will be interesting to see if he toes the company line or if he shares his opinions on the matter.
I will say that I love Punk, the one guy that got me watching again, and while I agree with him 100%, I hate the "I'm taking my ball and going home" act. You can talk indies or MMA all you want, there is only one playground to play on, and Punk knows that.

But didn't Punk create this situation himself? If he's been telling everyone that he's leaving in July, then why would Vince book him at the WM main event? Why put a guy - that doesn't have legend status - in the biggest match of the year if he isn't going to be around a few months later?

It's a Shame if Punk really walked out on em. While I agree with his reasons behind it, and believe HHH to be a burying bully, I can't help but feel that Punk is being unprofessional by taking his ball and leaving. While we fans aren't getting what we want by watching Daniel Bryan in the big matches, we at least get to see him on the show, which is way better than not seeing him at all. Punk has taken himself away from the fans. I would rather watch him wrestle Michael Cole than see him not be in the ring at all. Disappointed to see him go. And he has never been my favorite by any means. But he's very talented. And we are now gonna miss out.

To keep his biggest attraction (outside of John Cena) happy and re-signed. A guy that is in the prime of his career. And at the very top of the industry.
Batista isn't a legend, isn't a great worker, isn't 1/10 on the mic Punk is, isn't in his prime at 45 and his best days behind him (and his best days were good, not great), and isn't going to bring in the $$ Punk will.
Not to mention the attention Summer of Punk 2011 where he said he was leaving. Arguably the most talked about angle of the past 10-15 years.
McMahon's not an idiot. He knows, Punk knows (and everyone with a pulse knows) there's going to be rampant CM Punk chants throughout arenas until he returns. Next pipe bomb will be "It looks like taking him time off is the way to the top of the card again" (Batista/Lesnar/Dwayne/HHH)
Is he a legend (yet) to the level of star power that Austin/Rock/Hogan/Flair/Cena/HBK are/were? Probably not. Is he as big a draw as HHH/Lesnar/Savage ever were in WWE? Unquestionably yes IMO. Is he capable of reaching 'legend' status? Unquestionably IMO.
Though I doubt his hiatis is permanent, Punk will be fine w/o WWE. Guy can make a killing on appearances, indies, movies.

Really bad timing by WWE to have this many missteps right before the launch of the new Network. You would think they would want everything running on all cylinders. It feels like this really needs to be the biggest WM ever and then they can reboot the whole brand if they want to work better with the new toy they have.

I'm getting the vibe that people think Punk has no leverage. He is one of the WWE's top drawing cards and has that ability to put butts in seats and draw pops or heat as needed. He can work a program with just about anyone and is excellent on the mike. Egad, what promoter wouldn't want that?
He can work Japan and probably make boatloads of money working far fewer days and with far less travel (the commute from Chicago would be a bear...). Heck, Stan Hansen thrived in Japan; I'm sure anyone from here - especially at Punk's talent level - would be a megastar in Japan.

WWE fans voiced their displeasure with CM Punk's departure at Thursday night's NXT tapings from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.
According to multiple reports, fans at the show have been chanting "CM Punk" all night. The staff at Full Sail University also confiscated multiple CM Punk signs prior to the show. As you can imagine, this got a ton of heat from the crowd.
At the beginning of the taping, the audience was asked to chant "NXT" - but the raucous crowd rejected the request and chanted for Punk instead.
It will be interesting to say the least when WWE tapes RAW from Punk's home town of Chicago on March 3rd.

Punk has supposedly saved his money well over the years, and with having made over a million bucks a year the last few years to go top of it, I am sure he can afford to not work for a while, if that's what he chooses.
As for confiscating signs, sounds about right. Gotta love Vince and his cronies, as usual, trying to silence people. But it's only gonna make people chant for him even more at live events.

Not a prediction, but a "how they could fix this if it's not already a work which I kinda think it is":
1. WWE "quietly" extends Punks contract (is that possible?).
2. Punk starts threatening to wreck WM on twitter and elsewhere. We have to suspend disbelief that he could get into WM if he's not under contract. But still, I'd think it would increase buys and WWE Network subscriptions just to see where this is going.
3. Punk shows up at WM and involves himself in the main event and costs one guy the win, then destroying the victor after the match.
4. Everyone is happy Punk is back and the Network takes off.
I'm sure there are a thousand problems with this, but I've had a couple of cocktails and this popped into my vodka-addled mind.

Punk would be worse off if he signed with TNA. They're a cluster#### of a company right now and if he has issues with what the WWE is doing, I can't see him being happy there either.

Got about 20-25 mins into the Triple H bio on Netflix, right up to the point where he shows up to the WWF and The Clique takes him under their wing. Shouldn't be surprising but really enjoyable stuff. The WWE are masters of these type of docs. The little bits of knowledge they drop are great.

Maybe it was my imagination, but during Monday's Raw, it sure seemed that the minute a CM Punk chant would start the volume would get distorted. I wouldn't put it past their production team to do that, but it sure seemed odd.
I really appeared that for a week or two there last month, the writing team had it figured out and they were going in the right direction. However with Batista back, they really have lost the way and it makes no sense where they are going.

The Grantland channel does a "Cheap Heat" podcast that isn't horrible. They had Good Ole' JR on there last week and it was an entertaining hour of storytelling.
He has no inside information, but he feels Punk might still be at Wrestlemania. He also stated that it's amazing that WWE sold 60K tickets to WM without a single match announced.

Orton/Batista 1-on-1 isn't going to work as the main event. I think they'll only do 1 3-way match at Mania (I'd much prefer Reigns vs. Rollins vs. Ambrose as opposed to Orton vs. Batista vs. Bryan)

I think WWE had every intention of having Batista's surprise return at the Rumble. Then arena advertisements came out that he was scheduled to appear at events after the Rumble (so that blew that surprise & they brought him back a week before the Rumble).
Reigns vs. Batista screamed 'passing of the guard' at the end of the Rumble. I thought they could have made that huge with him vs. Authority/HHH/Orton (much like they did with Batista & HHH when the former won the Rumble and turned on HHH).leading up to a title match vs Orton at Mania.
I think you #### over the rest of the roster having 45 year old Batista (4 years away from WWE) winning over your everyday performers.
