*** Official *** Rogue One - A Star Wars Story (1 Viewer)

Saw it with my boys. I really liked it. I think I liked it as much as TFA. Thought it was a good movie. I hope they keep making more of these "story" movies.

That's the plan. Every other year is a Saga movie (ep7,8,9,etc) and every other year is a Story movie (Rogue One, Han Solo movie, etc)

Kind of hated it. Was really bored. Felt like a cash grab. 90 seconds of Vader ruled, but the rest was meh.
Seems like the cash grab comment would have been more easily made after last year's movie, which was way too similar to A New Hope and relied too much on original characters.  This movie stands on its own very well.  It uses the brand while making an interesting and unique film within the universe.

I honestly did not feel impressed by the Vader sequences. James Earl Jones sounds like a shell of himself and Vader just sort of seemed slimmed down...

IDK, prolly just less sensitive to scary dudes than 40 years ago
I thought him mowing down those rebels was awesome. We never really saw a whole lot of him fighting in his prime before. Fun to watch that, I had thought there'd be a lot more of it based on what I read and heard. Still cool.

ETC?
Disney will continue to milk this for years to come.. after 9, there will either be more side stories, or..

Maybe they go WAY back and delve deeper into the dark side up to the beginnings of Darth Sidious .. :oldunsure:

My thoughts:

The very good: Galen, K2SO, Krennic, the whole Rogue One crew aside from Jyn.

The very bad: Jyn (robotic and unconvincing), Vader (using James Earl Jones 100 year old voice was a big mistake and his mannerisms were un-Vader like)

The horrible: CGI Tarkin. The CGI was terrible quality, he looked like a video game character from 10 years ago, and he was in the movie way too much. Embarrassing. A slight holographic nod might have worked, but not what was done.

You're nuts.

So many cool Easter eggs in this movie. Some have been discussed earlier but lots of Rebels nods...Hera Syndulla in the final space battle with a brief view of the Ghost, chopper in the Yavin IV hanger, lots of small touches to tie in multiple facets of the universe.

Also love that the killed off Red 5 in the Rogue One space battle, leaving that call sign open for that farm boy in the next episode.

I really liked the movie also - I'd put it 4th on my list of favorite Star Wars movies.

My nitpicks are:

1.  The story-line doesn't exactly match up because (as previously mentioned in this thread) of the claim by Leia and others in the beginning of Ep. IV that their ship is a science ship (when it just clearly left a battle scene where the Imperial base was attacked and Death Star plans stolen).  They could have fixed this hole by not having Leia's ship leaving the battle scene but instead have received the transmitted plans to her ship and Vadar trace the transmission.

2.  Why can't they transmit the plans to all rebel ships instead of having to burn a disc?

3.  The last fight scene with Vadar took too long.  It seems like Vadar in his prime could have killed all of those men much faster, and if he knew that the guy at the door was holding the Death Star plans, he could have force flew them to him in seconds.

Still a very fun movie.

I don't think I've ever wanted the best scene in a movie to be shorter.

I need to go watch it again.
Seeing it a third time at 1PM EST.

My kid insisted on it. He was blown away Friday. Just blown away. To put it in perspective his favorites in order are:

The Empire Strikes Back

A New Hope

Rouge One

Return Of The Jedi

The Force Awakens

Revenge of The Sith

We don't discuss Episode 1 and 2 anymore as we have banned them from the cannon.

Good list, but honestly a new hope doesn't rank that high for me.

Phantom Menace at least had The Darth Maul battle and the pod races. I'm trying to remember anything even remotely cool or memorable from II or III. And I'll take precocious little kid Anakin over the epically bad acting job from Hayden Christensen anyday. Not sure why Revenge of the Sith always seems to get the nod as least crappy prequel.

Because it was non stop action.  ranks higher for me just cause of that. I liked force awakens more than a new hope but because it takes so much from a new hope I have a hard time ranking it above it.

Empire

Rotj

Revenge of sith

New hope

Force awakens

Rogue 1

Episode 1

Episode 2

Because it was the best story of the 3 with the least amount of negative impact from Hayden. It still has its moments but the opening space battle was awesome. The Obiwan vs Anakin showdown. The end of the republic. Yoda vs Palpatine. The Jedi extermination. The many different locales and planets make you feel like you're in a vast galaxy full of life.  All excellent scenes IMO. I put 3 pretty much on the same level as 7 though they both do different things well and different things poorly.

- the rebel alliance would never have survived as far as RO/ANH with that fractured leadership.
I think the idea was that by the time ANH starts, the militant faction of the Rebel Alliance has won out and they're steering things, once they were able to prove that the Death Star in fact existed and was being used to wipe out entire cities.

So you could say that their suicide mission not only succeeded in obtaining the plans to the death star, but also in unifying the Alliance and making it a real threat to the Empire.

The criticism of Phantom Menace is all warranted IMO but got to say it was one of the most memorable times I ever went to a movie.

Opening night after 15 years of waiting.  This is finally happening.  People flipping out over every title credit.  It was solid and we all wanted to like it.
