*** Official Russia vs. Ukraine Discussion - Invasion has begun *** (4 Viewers)

So with the Russians reduced to just using normal, unencrypted cell phones for communication, not only are their communications easily intercepted and movements tracked, but... Ukraine is just text messaging enemy soldiers directly with instructions on how to surrender, turn over their equipment, and apply for citizenship :lmao:

It’s not a terrible idea, that last part. They’d be arrested and tried for desertion if they went home, and they likely wouldn’t be very welcome there either. If I’m an enemy soldier, I’m giving it serious thought.

Sure, as long as you don’t have any family at home you care about.

You’d think they’d have an app for that by now, jeez. Slackers probably coulda ended the war last week. Pull some resources from marketing on Twitter and get this done stat!

This is where Russian hackers have the advantage, they're already set up to make all those spam calls about your car's extended warranty. Ukraine is probably trying to close the gap with spam calls like "We're calling about your tank, would you like to trade it in for citizenship and $5,000?"

Lot of very interesting details in that string.  Implementation of new sanctions (on top of the post-Crimea sanctions) are like Thor showing up on the battlefield.  "Ho-ho, you guys are so screwed now!"
This, combined with the knowledge that Russia’s military is a clown show, should let everybody not currently in the employ of Russia’s government or propaganda wing know that they aren’t in danger of an invasion(Ukrainians notwithstanding, and pushing back in places, too). Russian military might is a myth. They’re North Korea with more time zones and a skinnier dictator.

...and 120x more nuclear weapons and the capability to deliver them anywhere in the world...

That is concerning, but the second they launch any of them, the entire country of Russia is glassed.

...Along with millions of others in the free world.  It's not as simple as the traditional mutual assured destruction doctrine in my eyes.  That kept the world from destroying itself during the cold war...in my eyes, we're dealing with Putin.  In my opinion he has no regard for the world's population, INLCUDING those in Russia.  He wants a legacy.  I think if his legacy is "the guy who launched nukes that destroyed millions AND sealed the fate for Russia as a nation," then that's still a legacy. It's not his ideal legacy, but I feel like for him it's an option if reuniting the Soviet Union isn't on the table any more.

Russia has 2nd strike capability.  Even if we retaliate with nuclear strikes, something is getting through.  We don't have the ability to stomach the result of even 1 of thousands of nukes they could launch to the US detonating.

Could we destroy Russia in a conventional war?  In my opinion - yes.  Without much difficulty.  Would Russia respond with nuclear force?  Absolutely - especially if Putin is in control.  Is removing Putin or saving the Ukraine worth all the lives in any random US City?  Nope.

I'm not sure I would sign up for this train of thought. Seems like "some" casualties are ok with this line of thinking. Meaning the first strikes from Russia are going to land someplace and then the subsequent "glassing" resulting in, conservatively, 100m Russian deaths. Just seems like a cavalier attitude toward the probably end of civilization.

  100%

We (US) don't have to be involved in every conflict in the world. We certainly try to be and I think we share some responsibility for what's going on in the Ukraine right now but instead of telling the world Putin should be removed from power (escalating & inciting) maybe we should be offering to broker peace talks between the two (de-escalate). We can also be involved on the "peace" side of things every once in a while too.

Honestly, if it were up to me, nobody else would have to die, at least in this conflict. As for the end of the world, I don’t think this is it, at least not yet.

Trading tactical nuclear anything might not signal the end of the world but it's not real hard to see it over the horizon. It's like potato chips, you can't just do one. Once that toothpaste is out of the tube, you 1. have two or three or four superpowers immediately on edge and ready to assure they are not the first person without a chair. How do you assure that? By either taking out their launch capabilities or glassing a country (this also effects the countries around said parking lot so not just limited to one country). 2. it allows the countries like North Korea or better, India & Pakistan to have plausible reason to go after one another because "they did it". When the big boys take the gloves off, everyone does. Not everyone sees the world order the same as US.

One nuclear anything = many nuclear anything's, maybe not at once but you can certainly see the path to escalation to many.

I’m just going enjoy the dark comedy of the juxtaposition of tactical nukes and Pringles.

I understand your point, and I’m not wanting this to happen at all. I also understand that other cultures look at the world differently than we do, but I also believe that as much as nobody wants to be the last to the party, nobody wants to be first to it either. To that end, I don’t think this is going to kick that scenario off, if such a scenario is in our future.

In regards to the current situation, Russia is losing the war they started, and while Putin and his henchmen are desperately trying to blame everyone else, nobody is buying it.

"We successfully provided enough targets for their Javelins"

@KyivIndependent: ⚡️Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on March 29 that Russia “significantly reduced” the Ukrainian military’s combat power and can now focus on the key objective of "liberating Donbas."

“Our face has nearly broken their fists!”

Too bad they’re in for another bad time as Ukraine keeps its territory.

not sure that all of their claims are true, but even a fraction of them would make a cool movie

@RaptorOne9: @TrentTelenko @golub Ukrainian special team riding around on quads using sniper rifles and drones to bushwhack Russian convoys near Chernobyl.
WOLVERINES!!!!

One week into its invasion of Ukraine, Russia massed a 40-mile mechanised column in order to mount an overwhelming attack on Kyiv from the north.

But the convoy of armoured vehicles and supply trucks ground to a halt within days, and the offensive failed, in significant part because of a series of night ambushes carried out by a team of 30 Ukrainian special forces and drone operators on quad bikes, according to a Ukrainian commander.

The drone operators were drawn from an air reconnaissance unit, Aerorozvidka, which began eight years ago as a group of volunteer IT specialists and hobbyists designing their own machines and has evolved into an essential element in Ukraine’s successful David-and-Goliath resistance.

However, while Ukraine’s western backers have supplied thousands of anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles and other military equipment, Aerorozvidka has been forced to resort to crowdfunding and a network of personal contacts in order to keep going, by getting hold of components such as advanced modems and thermal imaging cameras, in the face of export controls that prohibit them being sent to Ukraine.

The unit’s commander, Lt Col Yaroslav Honchar, gave an account of the ambush near the town of Ivankiv that helped stop the vast, lumbering Russian offensive in its tracks. He said the Ukrainian fighters on quad bikes were able to approach the advancing Russian column at night by riding through the forest on either side of the road leading south towards Kyiv from the direction of Chernobyl.

The Ukrainian soldiers were equipped with night vision goggles, sniper rifles, remotely detonated mines, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras and others capable of dropping small 1.5kg bombs.

“This one little unit in the night destroyed two or three vehicles at the head of this convoy, and after that it was stuck. They stayed there two more nights, and [destroyed] many vehicles,” Honchar said.

The Russians broke the column into smaller units to try to make headway towards the Ukrainian capital, but the same assault team was able to mount an attack on its supply depot, he claimed, crippling the Russians’ capacity to advance.

“The first echelon of the Russian force was stuck without heat, without oil, without bombs and without gas. And it all happened because of the work of 30 people,” Honchar said.

ummm, Belgorod is in Russia...just over the border from the fighting in Kharkiv

@Liveuamap: Reports of explosions and fire at arsenal near Belgorod https://liveuamap.com/en/2022/29-march-reports-of-explosions-and-fire-at-arsenal-near-belgorod  #Ukraine https://twitter.com/Liveuamap/status/1508874225393754114/photo/1

@TrentTelenko: My take is this was a Russian ammunition handling accident.

Russia is reaching deeply into its old artillery ammunition stocks and time expired Russian ammo is an explosive accident waiting to happen.👇👇👇 https://twitter.com/RALee85/status/1508876012125360134

well, it's a start at least

@COUPSURE: Russia has said it will "drastically" reduce its military operations in the Kyiv and Chernihiv region so that peace talks can progress. According to the @AP, the Ukrainian army said it had observed withdrawals around Kyiv and Chernihiv.

It would be nice if true but Russia has lied every step of the way, so until the troops are actually confirmed out of the country I think it is safer to assume they are just re-positioning.

Or the troops are leaving anyway, either deserting or retreating.

I’m currently reading Max Hastings’ book “Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy 1945-1975” and am struck by how arrogant both the French and Americans were in fighting there. There’s a measure of condescension towards their opponent.
And it’s not like this the first time Russia has disregarded an opponent. They did it to Japan in 1904, in Afghanistan in the 80s, and now Ukraine.

I don’t think we have to worry about that. They’re rolling on all cylinders with this.
Funny side note: I’m watching a 2 year old video of tires/wheels detaching from vehicles. Take a wild guess as to where the vast majority of these are happening.

Turns out it’s not just their military that can’t make tires work.
