*** Official Russia vs. Ukraine Discussion - Invasion has begun *** (6 Viewers)

As a dad, this makes me very sad, but hopefully it’s not as needed as we might think.
https://twitter.com/MaxRTucker/status/1512529009661419530

121,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly removed to Russia, Ukraine’s Ombudswoman says. Now Moscow plans to simplify the procedure for Russians to adopt these children, potentially separating them from their families forever. This calculated cruelty is astounding.
I don't know if the number is right, but I have read about this over and over again.

This is actually amazing, almost to the point that I might need a cigarette after reading that. I won’t spoil the details, because it’s an interesting read, but it basically means that Putin has dug Russia’s grave with this. They can’t win, their bluster is just that, and they’re in for the harshest of reality checks.

I saw in related tweets to the one above, someone is sabotaging railways in Belgorod, which is a Russian border city not far from Kharkiv. It’s going to make Russian troop and equipment movement even harder. The tweet suggested that it’s possible Ukrainian saboteurs have been hard at work, to which I say good for them! Russia wants to destroy your country, go right ahead and break as much of their already crappy stuff as you can!

ETA:Clearly JaxBill and I saw the same tweet.

@ChuckPfarrer: THE PURGE: Putin has responded to failures in Ukraine by jailing more that 150 agents of his FSB intelligence service.  Also sent to sent to Lefortovo prison was Sergei Beseda, boss of the FSB's 5th Directorate, in charge of intel in the ex-Soviet Republics-- including Ukraine. https://twitter.com/ChuckPfarrer/status/1513691167820558340/photo/1

@thetimes: The service’s former chief, Sergei Beseda, 68, has been sent to Lefortovo prison in Moscow after he was placed under house arrest last month.

The prison was used by the NKVD for interrogation and torture during Stalin’s Great Purge of the 1930s https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/kremlin-arrests-top-general-in-hunt-for-invasion-scapegoats-mrfdbmcxv?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=ukraine&utm_medium=branded_social

At what point does he ask himself, “Maybe I’m the problem?”

I needed a lung dart after reading that too. It gives me confidence the good guys are going to win.

Well, we’ve seen that Russia’s military is actually pretty terrible at everything war related, but nobody wants to invade Russia, because it’s a dumphole. As for Finland and Sweden joining, Russia isn’t going to do anything about it.
I disagree. Russia's military seems to be very very good at what it does. And that is to just bomb everything in to oblivion. They did it in Syria and now are doing it in Ukraine. This shouldn't be taken lightly.

Syria put up no defense and got bombed badly. Ukraine is putting up a defense and keeping Russia at bay, to the point that they don’t even have air superiority in the country. They’re not good at fighting someone who can fight back.

Sweden and Finland(the latter of whom is already preparing to crush any Russian invasion), are debating today to join NATO, possibly moving forward on ending their neutrality. Whatever Russia’s doing to try and intimidate everyone, it’s not working. At all. They’re threatening nations who immediately turn around and look at NATO and go, “It’s not our first choice, but it’s certainly better than whatever Vlad is threatening.”

@arawnsley: Have you ever ####ed up so badly that you made Sweden and Finland joint NATO?

Except they're literally running out of certain types of missiles. Estimates are they've used 1700 - 2000 missiles in Ukraine. They're using anti-ship missiles on land targets. They're using a lot of dumb bombs and some antiquated missile systems.

@KyivPost: The Pentagon said that #Russia is running out of precision-guided munitions. Besides, they are expensive, hard to find, and sometimes unreliable.

The #US is also estimating a failure rate of up to 60% for the warheads of some Russian missiles, officials say. https://twitter.com/KyivPost/status/1507277613399785505/photo/1
.400 is an amazing batting average, but definitely not what anyone wants for their precision guided munitions.

Somebody (maybe you) posted yesterday we are expending a fair amount of Javelins and Laws for Ukraine's sake. Given the current chip shortages we are seeing all over the world effecting every facet of production, we won't be replacing them nearly as quickly as pre-covid days. Something to think about.

Who else would we need them for? China? They’re almost dependent on us buying their stuff as it is, and clearly Russia isn’t about to open up another losing front that quickly.

My only concern is whether this is something that backs Russia into such a corner that they start doing more crazy things.

We’re not forcing Russia to do anything. They’re the ones antagonizing everyone within shouting distance, the other nations are well within their rights to choose a path they feel gives them the best chance at not winding up having to beat Russian soldiers back across their borders.

I don't have an answer for that but strategically, we're publicizing this information to anyone who wants to listen so it creates an opportunity for someone should they decide to invade, say Taiwan. We didn't anticipate having to supply a proxy war or leave $80 gajillion dollars of stuff in Afghanistan but here we are.

Just saying we should keep an eye on it before we goes all in. And yes, I realize we spend 25 times more than the next 50 countries combined in defense so we could probably use to deplete inventory some but I envision spending cuts in the future for defense so all coupled together, let's just not leave the shelves bare.

That’s fair, but Taiwan is an island, and islands are much, much harder to invade. There are only two options to do so, sea or air; and both leave the potential invaders wide open to missile attack. I also get the feeling that when nations do publicize their weapons numbers, they undercut the number to throw potential enemies off.

@watcher_zero: @Charles_Lister To add, just heard the Pentagon is summoning the 8 largest US Arms manufacturers to tell them to discuss moving to a wartime production rate (i.e. outsourcing production, using spare capacity at one firm to help produce equipment for anothers order, etc..)

I know I'm coming off as negative toward the efforts here but we're financing this war now? When does this end for us? We can't go a month without ramping up the war machine and filling pockets.

It's been quite evident this is a proxy war. Only thing holding it back from the real thing are US uniformed personnel and those pesky Mig29s that US has put the kibosh on

Sting - Russians (Guitar / Cello Version)

He's tweaked it a few times since the original release in 1985 and looks like he's rolling it back out for the war.

Original Version:

In Europe and America there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mister Krushchev said, "We will bury you"
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It'd be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly on common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology, regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the president
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mister Reagan says, "We will protect you"
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology, regardless of ideology
But what might save us, me and you
Is if the Russians love their children too

I read this was going on but that number is shocking.

@DefenceU: russian invaders have already forcibly evacuated more than 500,000 people from Ukraine, a number that can be compared with the population of an entire European city such as Tallinn, President @ZelenskyyUa said in his address to the Estonian parliament. #ArmUkraineNow (1/3)

@DefenceU: There are recorded cases of parents being forcibly separated from their children. russia is preparing to give abducted Ukrainian orphans up for adoption to russian families. russian “denazifiers” act in the same way as the Nazis in 1941-43. #ArmUkraineNow (3/3)

For those trying to put that number in perspective, that’s as if the Russians basically took the entire population of Detroit. I hope Russian crops fail, I hope their factories burn, and I hope they never know a moment’s peace for what they have done.

ETA: Didn’t check my numbers, Detroit’s made a population rebound.

What if they turned the drones from turkey on the navy.  Those drone shots strong enough to sink a big ship?
Interesting question. My guess is that it’s at least possible, considering those same shots can destroy a tank, and if that hits a ship below the waterline, bad things could be in their future.

I had questions about the list of US aid this week includes...

One mystery on the list is an unspecified number and type of “unmanned coastal defense vessels” that the U.S. Navy will provide. Kirby described the drone heading to Ukraine only as “a surface vessel that can be used for a variety of coastal defense missions,” adding amid questions: “I assure you that they work.”

I’m not seeing updated news on the ship, but it is very funny that a country without a navy could have sunk an enemy flagship.

You know, what this war needs is a Baghdad Bob to spin the war the way Russia wants the world to see it. We could call him Moscow Mike.
