He also reported that the 40M figure was a release clause for Suarez. I'll take this with a grain of salt.

Napoli valued him higher and put up the money quickly. Arsenal had to be caught off-guard.

Prioritizing a rival's player on long-term contract over an accessible talent like Higuain would be moronic.

To be fair, Napoli was flush with cash after selling Cavani. Arsenal doesn't have the luxury of swimming in money from profiting in the transfer market.

:blackdot: for Suarez apology
I don't know that this is over just yet, but we'll see. Besides, are you sure you want to keep him? ;)
Agreed..still time left and nothing is final until the window close...so we'll see.

IF he's still here in January...He could be a real good get for someone in the CL. Not often you can get that talent in January who isn't cup tied.
Liverpool have got a tiger by the tail here. The countdown clock for his departure has started, it's just a matter of when during the next 12 months he leaves. He and Liverpool have both gotten a little nasty here. And the longer this plays out with Suarez agitating, the worse Liverpool's bargaining position becomes, and of course the more distracting he is to the team.

OTOH, I don't think Liverpool can afford to lose him, especially this late in this transfer window, and still expect to seriously compete in the league for top 4. It'll be hard enough with him there as you saw last year. Even if they sell him and pocket 40M+, who do they get in his place?

That's the sort of dilemma I'm just has happy for Arsenal to avoid frankly, but Arsenal at least for now would seem to be able to afford this a bit more than Liverpool. He's basically Terrell Owens - a tremendously gifted player, but unbelievably narcissistic and selfish and a major distraction for the team.
I expect RM to get him on the cheap either this year or next when he throws a complete temper-tantrum and becomes a team cancer. That's generally how they go about things and they are good at getting their way. Luckily for Tottenham Bale has not obliged yet, but I expect Suarez will go ape#### for them without too much convincing.

I don't doubt that if Madrid had made the offer that Suarez would have put in an official transfer request.

Hell, Madrid hadn't even been in the picture..AT ALL. It just comes from his interviews in Uruguay that he'd love to play there.

Enough talk. It's time for some Fußball!

The defense of the Salad Dish begins today with Bayern München hosting Borussia Mönchengladbach on Gol TV to kick off the Bundesliga season.

:goodposting:

I just don't think Arsenal valued Higuain high enough, and they also appear to have got caught up on the idea that they could land Higuain for a steal (~25M), and then got offended when Ancelotti came on board and nixed that.

They seem much more interested in getting a deal than a player.

I'm all over this thread saying how they handled Higuain is stupid, and I have yet to discern an overall transfer strategy for this transfer window that doesn't look like passive, bargain-hunting opportunism at this point. I really don't get this given that Wenger's entering his last contract year.

Tancredi Palmeri@tancredipalmeri4m

It's happening. Eto'o discussing his way out from Anzhi. And, Sky Italy reporting that has been contacted by - wait for it - Napoli!
Willian is the guy to keep an eye on imo. Young and probably good value. Looked great playing for Shakhtar against Chelsea last year.

Pretty tough draw for Arsenal getting Fenerbahce. They should advance but that's some tough travel early in the season. Good one for the fans I'd think.

William is an amazing talent and is just entering his prime. Given AVB's relationship with him I expect if Tottenham sell Bale they will turn to Willian (assuming they don't get Morata).

I'm not convinced they are going to sell Bale though. RM simply doesn't have the money.

Fenerbahce is in the process of appealing a 2-year ban from UEFA competition for match fixing. The final ruling will be made the day after the second leg against Arsenal.

It would be really convenient for UEFA if Arsenal won this. :tinfoilhat:

#1 FAN OF FENERBACHE
I mean you've got to have some stake in the CL, right?
Well, there's always shining our 5 trophies. What do you guys do with yours?

Oh.
It's fun to visit the Parthenon, isn't it? I feel like I'm right in the center of it all!
Don't fret, GB. I hear they are going to start giving out trophies for Top 4 finishers.
Cool! Let's keep an ear out for those top 8 trophies too!

The Arsene Cup.

Soccer dummy asking a question here, mostly for curiosity

in my Career Mode in FIFA13 i am playing as Manchester United, i am actually doing the player mode not manager because i don't want to manage i just want to play.

Anyway, they keep emailing me that the date of a game has changed, does that actually happen? It seems very odd.

Yes, it happens as you advance in cup competitions, which means more future matches get added to your schedule. This sometimes requires that league matches get moved to accommodate them as you can't have same-day or next-day matches.

This can also happen if a match suddenly gets TV coverage and the network wants to change the time to earlier or later in the same day to get more viewers.

....

The year was 2002. American soccer, normally a global power, was going through one of its brief down periods, this one having begun in August of 1930. Across the nation, on at least three online message boards, all of which were administered by college students named Brad, hopes were soaring that a strong performance at the upcoming World Cup, to be co-hosted by Japan and South Korea, would restore the USMNT to its rightful position of glory abroad and massive celebrity at home. A little luck on the pitch, a little smart branding, the complete implosion of baseball in a years-long PED scandal, and who knows? Anything could happen.

And that was how the most amazing photo shoot in the history of U.S. soccer came blazing — literally blazing, like a Mack truck filled with dragons and pushed off the top of Mount Rushmore — into existence....

Who is more likely to win the EPL over the next 5 years? Arsenal or Liverpool?
Which is more likely to be purchased by a crazy oligarch?
I actually don't see that happening in either instance. Both clubs are both rich and stable financially as it stands.
Arsenal have significantly more money due to their stadium. They don't seem to like to spend it, but if they ever do they could challenge for a title fairly easily.

Well, yeah, I said yesterday Arsenal's a decade ahead of Liverpool in terms of the stadium situation, but Liverpool's moving there.

Regardless, Liverpool's still a rich club and is still a worldwide brand. I see no signs of FSG selling them.

Someone needs to put Gol Tv out of it's misery. I flipped on the Bundesliga pregame show and it was unwatchable. They produced it in English and then had a Spanish translator talking over it while leaving the English audio there as well. Unbelievable.
