By the way, there are rumors that ManU is interested in Rossi (the new Jersey Rossi). Could be a good fit, but I'm sure that Villarreal don't want to part with such a young talent, although it would open more room for Jozy to get some PT.

I really do wonder if any of the US players are gonna get some more looks from european teams. In particular Gooch, Davies, Spector, and LD. I really do think that LD should move on to La Liga because I think the game suits him there best. The Spanish press is giving him a lot of credit for his technical skill and motor.
Spector played for West Ham once he got healthy. The rumors about Gooch seems to change every weak. I had heard he was all but delivered to Borussia Munchegladbach to play with Bradley, then I heard Birmingham had him wrapped up. Last weekend I heard that he had agreed to terms with Fenerbache, but then heard just that they had shown heavy interest. I think it's an interesting dilemna for Gooch. I think he'll play a lot for any of those teams, but is it better to play for a good team in a roughly comparable league to the Juliper League (I'm sure Fenerbache and Galatsaray are probably better than Twente and Anderlicht, but I'm not sure how good the Turkish league is beyond the top teams) so that he gets Champions League football? Because he's already doing that. Or is it better to play for a weak team in a better league? I think I'd prefer the latter.I think Davies is in a good spot. He gets games with Hammarby. I'm not sure he would in a bigger league. Same with Feilhaber, although I think he might thrive in a league like the Eredivise. I think Landon could play for a mid table team in any league. Obviously, some leagues suit him better. But the Bundisliga is a surprisingly offensive league. It leads European leagues in goals per game every year, so I'm not sure the league itself was a bad fit for Landon. I just think he needs some time to get games in.

Rossi was in the United youth system for a few years and they kept loaning him out. I heard that they wanted him back too...

They just sold him to Villareal two years ago. I assume his asking price has increased substantially in the meantime. Unlike other superclubs, its not too common to see ManU on the wrong business end of deals like this.

i thought i read somewhere that they inserted some sort of clause that would allow them to buy him back at a later date. RE: Wikipedia......

On July 31, 2007, Manchester United confirmed Rossi had been sold to Spanish club Villarreal for an undisclosed fee, reportedly around £6.6 million (€10 million).[8][9] However, a clause was added to Rossi's Villarreal contract that allows Manchester United to re-purchase him at a later date.[10] He scored his first goal for Villarreal on his debut against Valencia on August 26, 2007.[11] By the end of his first season with Villarreal, Rossi had scored 12 goals in 32 league appearances, along with three goals in eight Champions League appearances.[12]

shiite moslem. Sorry guys.I do sometimes get you mixed up as you both played soccer at a high level, right?DP, did you play when you were over in Valladolid?
I never played soccer beyond a high school level.I was in Valladolid to study abroad which meant much more sangria than soccer.
Mebbe me? Div 1 college (top 25), semi-pro (don't read too much into that- there was NO MLS or any other kind of pro league at the time, so college players and immigrants played in Cosmopolitan leagues... some got payed well- I remember a Central Amercian team moved a guy up from El Salvador and covered his living expenses- but most of us made essentially beer/gas money. I got 40 a game  with bonuses for scoring... 50, IIRC.) I was a better youth player- ODP and all of that. I think there's an FFA who was a consistent East Regional youth team member who played with or against Charlie Davies... Neo, or Morpheus... one of the Matrix names.
Were you the one who could've signed in Italy?
Dunno.I had a lot of peers from youth and college level play lower division ball all over the world- a couple made it big (one at Hamburg, one at Barcelona youth or reserves). The door was open for me to play lower division stuff somewhere... biggest regret of my life not to give it a try.

I thought I remember someone here saying that they traveled to Italy when younger (possibly on vacation) and ended up playing/training briefly with a lower-level Italian team. Serie C1 or C2 maybe. Maybe it wasn't you :lmao:

SA doing well, they need to get a goal though. They keep neglecting to play the wings in the attacking 3rd.
In English please!!!
Translation:South Africa is playing well, but if they don't score soon, they probably won't be able to hold off the Brazilians forever. However, South Africa keeps trying to attack down the middle of the field when they get close to Brazil's net. They have some open teammates on the sidelines who they keep neglecting to pass to...

Thank you. Is "attacking third" the 1/3 of the field closest to the net one is trying to shoot into? I like watching soccer on TV but I know jack all of any of the terms or positions other than the goalie... 'natch.

Gotta think the U.S. team wanted to play Brazil again. If they can push them to extra time or even lose by a goal that would be better than winning the "Confederation Cup" over South Africa. Winning a Confederation Cup by beating Spain and Brazil would be pretty memorable.

South Africa had one head ball of a corner I believe that could have put them on the board. They also had one deflected shot that completely changed direction and almost sneaked by Cesar. Otherwise, they insisted on mainly attacking the middle and basically were pushed around near the box. Any attempts to go wide resulted in crosses that didn't connect. Almost all corner and free kick opportunities were basically wasted. Their lack of size was evident as a weakness. If they had a striker with some size and more importantly strength, all of the quick movement around him would result in much better chances.

This was key. When you are playing a team of Brasil's quality, you have to be able to get something out of those plays like Egypt did vs. Italy.

While the Americans are often outclassed on the pitch between the boxes. Their size and strength in the box when used like against Spain can even the playing field. It is a plus on defense as witnessed by Demerit and Gooch on all of the Spanish crosses. And on offense they Americans are more likely to get penalties than a South African team since they are much harder to take down. That plus their ability to get their heads on crosses. It ain't pretty, but it is their best chance against the top squads in the world.

I gotta disagree here. The US central defenders often get called for fouls (and sometimes penalties) because they are so big and tend to play physical. Some of the Mexican and Central American striker take full advantage of this and will roll around on the ground anytime they are touched. Often times the ref doesn't go for it, but sometimes they do.More than anything against Spain, it was the coverage and communication that excelled for the defense. How many times did a player coming back break up a cross or diagonal pass for Spain? Clark likely saved a goal with a tremendous slide to block a shot by Ramos. It was a level of intensity and passion on the defensive side of the ball that aided in preventing Spain from scoring (as well as their lack of finishing). Now on the offensive side, I think you're closer to the point. Jozy has done OK at drawing fouls. He's quick and strong enough to get into positions where defenders have to commit to making a foul, or allowing a shot. That's probably his greatest skill, and he's certainly better at that than a finesse passing or touch on the ball. Ching is also OK at this, and has a good work rate to boot. Too bad neither of them have anywhere near the ball handling or touch to actually create their own shot going at a defender (yet in the case for Jozy). The key for the US is discipline and having a well thought out game plan for each team they face. Sometimes they will be forced to be an all-out counter attacking team that packs the box and tries to spring a counter. Some times they will need to utilize LD, Feilhaber, or Dempsey to make zig-zag runs and take on midfielders to be able to get into position to make a cross. Sometimes they're gonna have to be content with settling for the set pieces (a la Germany) and make the most out of those.

Holy crap that was a fine free kick from Alves!!

Just finished watching the replay and thought for sure we were going to PK's. Good game plan by the South African coach. They played really, really well. Sharp passing and their D was great. Lots of crazy long range shots, but I guess that comes from nerves.

As long as DMB is not on the field I think we have a shot on Sunday.

I know what you're talking about...Mokoena couldn't quite keep the header down.

Not sure if this was posted yet. Here is the roster for the Gold Cup. Definite B side feel to it. Hopefully Cooper and Freddy can see some time. Nice to see Cherundolo back although we now have seemingly strong depth on the right side.

U.S. ROSTER -- CONCACAF GOLD CUP 2009

GOALKEEPERS (3): Jon Busch (Chicago Fire), Troy Perkins (Valerenga IF/NOR), Luis Robles (FC Kaiserslautern/GER)

DEFENDERS (7): Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Clarence Goodson (IK Start/NOR), Jay Heaps (New England Revolution), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjaellands/DEN), Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock/GER)

MIDFIELDERS (8): Davy Arnaud (Kansas City Wizards), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Colin Clark (Colorado Rapids), Sam Cronin (Toronto FC), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Logan Pause (Chicago Fire), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)

FORWARDS (5): Freddy Adu (AS Monaco/FRA), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF/SWE), Santino Quaranta (D.C. United)

I saw that Gold Cup roster the other day and was left scratching my head.

No Howard, no Altidore, no Gooch or Demerit, no Donovan, etc.

Is this like the tryout for "who's going to be a backup in 2010"?

Just last week I called Kyle Beckerman and Santino Quaranta a couple of scrubs, and here they are

My thoughts are this1) Bradley has to give some of the Euros some down time, because they have been playing non stop since last August. Giving them some down time in July before the next set of qualifiers and their own Euro training starts makes some sense I think.2) Bradley also can't continue to monopolize MLS players for the entire summer and something had to give and the Gold Cup was deemed the least worthy

It's also a surprisingly old roster for a B team. There are guys who can really help themselves in the Gold Cup. You have to think that Parkhurst, Marshall, Holden, and Adu are playing for consideration with with the A team. I'm a little surprised they're not giving Torres a chance to get off Bradley's #### list.

Also, its a Confederations Cup year, so the only reward for winning is the hardware.

Quaranta's been playing very well, whether that warrants a call-up is another manner. Most of the European player need both a break and to be with their clubs for preseason training. I don't think any were expected to play in the Gold Cup. It also looks like Bradley basically took a wide cross section of players on different MLS teams. I do have to say that I have no clue what the midfield formation will be with these guys. You have to expect both Ching and Davies will play a ton up top (I'd guess Cooper will end up being the odd man out here which sucks for him since I think he's better than Casey, but who knows) leaving Adu to play the AM with Holden somewhere in the middle. After that who knows.

Pretty sure Torres needs time off like the Eurobased players. Apertura starts in about a month. I don't know when Pachuca starts training but I would think in the next few weeks. While it would be nice to see him play here, dude probably needs some kind of a rest. I'm actually surprised Davies is on the squad since he is in season and has missed the last month. I know he was suspended for part of that but still.

Desperate for some help here:

Is there a player for Crystal Palace (or any team in England) that goes by the nickname 'HOGGY' or something very close?
