OK, I signed up for the La Liga fantasy game.

You guys should join up too. It should be fun. I haven't played any fantasy sports in about 3 years.

My la Liga squad (4-4-2)

Ibrahimovic SoldadoCani Gonz. Castro Piatti M. HurtadoJuanito Canella Arbeloa Crespo Diego López
it was actually pretty tough to field a good squad. Especially when buying 1 striker costs 25+% of the budget.

those of you defending howard: (and i'm not necessarily going to rip into him) name the top 10 goalkeepers in the world and then tell me how many of them have given up 6 goals in a game. i'm just asking.

a couple of other observations:

can't believe arsenal let arshavan fly to beunos aires to play in a friendly the day after a league match.

interesting that bendtner has agreed to reimburse anyone who owns his no. 26 jersey now that he's changed his number.

how far back is the list of favorite teams? i can't find it.

I'm not going to pour over stats for all of the great GKs but I simply googled buffon and six goals and this came up:
Gianluigi Buffon Deserves No Criticism for Juventus' Defensive Struggles

As the frustrating results start to pile up and the championship trophy falls further out of reach, the natural reaction of any fan is to start playing the blame game.

With six goals finding the back of the net against Juventus the past two weeks, fans have decided that one of the main people to blame in all of this, along with manager Claudio Ranieri, is goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus have gone from having one of the best statistical defenses to now, despite their still high ranking, to being one of the most susceptible ones.

And when fans or pundits see three goals going in a game, it's easy to blame the man who defends.

But to blame Buffon is certainly the wrong and uneducated choice. What these people seem to be missing is that the four players who are in front of the 31-year-old Italian 'keeper, including Giorgio Chiellini, have been anything but impressive as of late.

No matter how skilled Buffon and Chiellini are, the supporting cast around them are simply not the same of years past before Juve got demoted to Serie B.

How many teams that want to be considered a legitimate contender have players like Cristian Molinaro and Jonathan Zebina starting for them as fullbacks?

Compare those two to Juve's biggest competition for the Scudetto, Inter Milan, and it's downright embarrassing. Compare Molinaro and Davide Santon and there really isn't any. One is being called the new Paolo Maldini and the other would barely hack it at other clubs that set their sights at winning the Scudetto.

Throw in somebody in the defense getting what seems like a new injury every week, creating any kind of chemistry as one unit to play the offsides trap that Ranieri continually decides to use even though the defense has been burned by it an incredible amount this season, and having a consistent lineup week after week, and blaming

If you read the press, he hasn't been on top of his game at all since he returned from injury in February. Most tend to forget that in that return to Serie A action against Fiorentina, he was the man who kept Juve in the game and ultimately in the lead for good.

Of course, when you come back from injury, you may not be able to do everything right away. And even though Buffon has been great at times (e.g. his performance against Fiorentina), he's still on the road to being the man everybody envisions him as.

And because of those lofty expectations that few goalkeepers have, if anything less than that happens, people are going to freak out.

The problem is not Buffon, it's the defenders in front of him giving him no support whatsoever.

How many goals have we seen in the past two months and change of Buffon having to deal with a one-on-one situation because a Juve defender got burned and is now trailing the play?

Even the greatest 'keepers in the world need a respectable defense in front of them. A team can't rely on their star in the net to bail them out every time they make a mistake. It's not a good way to survive a season, let alone attempt to win a title.

Until Juventus upgrade the back four, things will be tough. No matter who you have up top scoring goals for you, if you give up goals, you're not going to have a good chance to win.

If that doesn't happen soon, Juventus will be in even more trouble than they are right now. It's hard to imagine things getting any worse defensively, but if things keep going the way they are, that so-called dream will become a reality.

I think I started to sign up but got discouraged because I had trouble filling out a team. Season starts in two weeks, right? I'll get it done by then, but I don't know any of the players outside of the ones on Barcelona, Madrid, Atletico, Sevilla, and Valencia. Do you have less to work with in that league compared to the premier league one we've got going? The stars seem to be way more expensive.

I think a link is in Steve Tasker's sig.

Iker Cassilas is on just about everyone's short list. He let in six against Barcelona last season. And four against Liverpool in a game where everyone seemed to agree that he played pretty great. After Cassilas and Buffon, I'm not sure there's a lot of consensus on who would round out the top 10. Petr Cech is often mentioned, but a quick search of this thread should turn up multiple instances of Cletius Maximus and I discussing his weaker games. I like Sebastien Frey and Julia Cesar, but I'd be hard pressed to find any six goal games in Serie A. The games just don't go down that way. A more interesting question, assuming KSB is English, is what English keeper he'd cite as quality. Because if I had to choose between David James, Paul Robinson, and Tim Howard, I'd take Howard every time. I think Paul Green is decent and Joe Hart and Ben Foster have a lot of potential, but Howard is better than them too. I have no idea how Howard played against Arsenal. I didn't see the game. And I actually thought Howard should have done better on the winning goal from Mexico, but its ludicrous to cite Howard (or goaltending in general) as evidence of the weakness of American soccer players. We've had very good goalkeeping for almost twenty years now. Howard was the only American on the field for Everton. How come the six goals didn't prove that English footballers like Phil Neville are ####? It's not as if any Englishmen scored the goals. I counted a Brazillian, a Belgian, a Frenchman (two if we count Saha for Everton), a Spaniard and a Croatian scoring the goals. Arsenal, interestingly, didn't start a single Englishman.

While I don't think Howard is a top 10 GK in the world, the top 10 GKs in the world play for some of the top teams in the world - teams who mark the opposition's strikers on free kicks and don't let Cesc Fabregas sprint 70 yards straight down the field with the ball to score...

If by "KSB" you mean Sierra Kilo Bravo, I'm pretty sure he's an American living in like (maybe) California....I play Xbox with him fairly often...

It was a dumb thesis. It got even dumber when he tried to defend himself.

If we are going to have the GK debate, I feel like you have to throw Valdes into consideration. He has come up with very important saves during both of Barca's CL runs(huge in both finals) and has won the Zamora more times than Casillas(2-1). By watching is form it is tempting to not rate him highly(I've done it often), but you cannot argue with the results he has gotten over the past few years. It is difficult to find a keeper that has gotten better results over the last few years.

*Obviously I am a Barcelona homer, but have never been a Valdes fan.

There's a reason that Valdes doesn't get called into the Spain squad very often. He's good, but not great, and definitely benefits from having a top flight defensive unit in front of him. not to mention world class midfielders who love to maintain possession. He probably sees very few quality shots per game. Also Barça benefits from NOT giving up penalties very often. Part of that is the caliber of their players mentally and physically and part of it is playing 1/2 their games in Camp Nou.

There are least 3 goalies better than Valdes of Spanish decent (Casillas, Reina, and Diego López). Hopefully it will likely be 4 in 1 or two years with Asenjo coming along.

Valdes has done exceptionally well with Barcelona. IMO he's actually played better in the tougher games, which really says something. Credit where credit is due, no doubt.

Based on my extensive experience playing in fantasy soccer leagues (one season) I would advise caution when considering using 25% of one's cap on a striker who shares the field with Messi and Henry.

My favorite Petr Cech moment: Chelsea - Liverpool 2nd leg of CL quarters
I know very little of soccer, so was puzzled when they lined up like that with a one-man wall and the near post wide open. I assumed at the time it must have been an indirect free kick and would guess the entire Chelsea defense must have thought the same.

Maybe I was unnecessarily obtuse then. Maybe the guy just had a really bad day. Maybe I'm overly critical. Again, I welcome any commentary on any of this.
To watch one game, show up and start acting like an English football snob looking down your nose at all things American is the epitome of toolishness. So for your sake, I really hope this is a fishing trip.
Seriously.... WTF is he talking about? I am away for a week and some clown decides to show his football knowledge by hacking on Americans and using Howard as his thesis point? How pathetic...
Not the first game I've watched. It is the first 6-1 game I've watched. Can you tell me why American footballers aren't generally second rate? Can you tell me that Howard didn't misplay many of those shots? Please share.

I did this already. Please go back and read one of my earlier posts. I gave my opinion on five of the six, as I turned it off after 4-0, then went back to watch until 5-0, at which point my TiVo stopped recording. Thank you.Edit - Post #12371, Christo.

quick rules question (my brother asked and i have no idea).

He and his friends were playing pick up today and the goalie somehow stopped a shot by catching it between his legs. someone then came and kicked the ball out from between his legs (dangerous as hell, i know) and it went in.

If this happened in a legit game, would it count? I know you can't challenge a goalie when he's holding the ball, but would having it between your legs count as having control?

and Yes, i realize how stupid this is, but at this point, i want to know.

I've had this happen to me in the last couple years, and the ref called it, giving me a free kick. I don't know the actual "rule" as it very well could be a safety thing for the place I play at.

You might not get a card, and the goal might count, but there will be plenty of people going studs up after you for the rest of the game. Plus and asskicking in the parking lot.

FWIW, I've never seen anything like this in a pro game.

As an Arsenal fan, I watched the whole game. I really only think he did poorly on 1 of the goals (Cesc's 1st). The first goal, we agree - Denilson's shot was unstoppable. The 2nd and 3rd (Vermaelen and Gallas) were largely the fault of horrible marking. Maybe he could have come out and gotten the crosses, but Vermaelen's was on the other side of the far post, and I wouldn't want my goalkeeper coming for that unless he was 100% he could get the ball, and I don't think he should feel responsible for that ball. Too much can go wrong there if he doesn't catch it or punch it out of bounds. Gallas' goal was again due to horrible marking. At that level you have to assume that your defender will run with his man, plain and simple.Cesc's first we agree was his fault. His second, again, due to horrible defense. You can't allow a team's playmaker to take the ball that kind of distance and never even have someone TRY to stop him! As he was coming down the pitch, I saw van Persie start to make a run for a through ball and thought he'd slide it through to him, but realized that the entire defense was backing off, and thought "shoot!" about a half second before he did, and he struck it well.Eduardo's (which you admit you didn't see) was a shot off the post, and Howard was out of the play from trying to stop Arshavin's shot. Again, not his fault, though not completely the defense's either. Watching that play, Eduardo just simply anticipated what was happening well before anyone else. That's what I like most about Eduardo. He obviously is a clinical finisher, but he reads the game so much better than other players - it's amazing.

Yep. I realized at a young age that I had just the right amount of crazy in me for it. Combined with a desire to run as little as possible, and I was sold.

If the goalie has stopped the ball completely, and isn't bobbling it, I'd have to imagine it's at least a yellow card in a game situation. If he's juggling it at all though, play on.

Technically, a GK isn't protected until he's gained possession of the ball with his hands. Otherwise, he's like any other player.

Yeah, but you'd be hard pressed to see someone go after the ball while within the goalie's possession, even if the possession is just with the legs. I'm talking specifically after a stop from the opposition, not a pass back to the goalie from the feet of a defending player.

Correct, but I can't imagine a ref being too lenient if the GK is clearly in possession of the ball and someone runs in and takes a swipe at it.If it's in the middle of a scrum in front of the net and everyone's fighting for it, that's one thing...but the way he's telling the story sounds like the GK has complete control and some guy runs the goalie out of nowhere. Maybe I was misreading the statement.

not sure which is correct. I received this question via text message from my brother.

Did anyone catch the women's pro game on some third rate cable sports network this WE? It was the DC Freedom vs. the NJ Sky Blue FC.

Anyway, that beast of a striker Abby Wombach came storming in to challenge the goalie for a high through pass. The goalie came out a little late and couldn't punch the ball away. She actually got hurt on the play too.

I was saying to my fiancee that the goalie should have come out and trucked/punched Wombach while going for the ball. The ref wasn't going to give up a PK for it, and she could have put a hurt on Wombach. The DC team ended up scoring on a loose ball from the play, tying the score in the 80th, but lost the game.

This whole discussion reminds of the only time I was ever given a straight red. Cross came in and the keeper caught it and then dropped it right in front of me. I was coming in full steam when he bobbled it and it hit the ground. I went straight at it and poked the ball as he was reaching to get it. Ball goes in net, major crash between me and goalie. End result, I get sent off and goal is waved off. Ref told me goalie had control of it. :stillbitterafter20years:

Liverpool really sucked taint today.
They are going to miss Alonso. I have a feeling we'll be seeing Benayoun in the starting lineup from now on.
Did they ever. There was no distribution from the midfield until Benayoun came on, Gerrard came back and Kuyt went up. Babel did nothing. I think he touched the ball three times. Lucas is like a baby Mascherano. That was painful to watch. Keane should have ended the game in the first half.
Last season I remember thinking Benayoun should be starting but then he always gives them a great lift off of the bench. I just wish he would come in a little earlier like 55 mins or so. The real problem is Babel is awful. Dirk Kuyt is really underrated imo and really helped them over achieve last season. Also, when Xabi was out last season they were totally lost it seemed to me so I actually was not at all suprised by the result against Spurs (I like them for 6th this season). I pray this Aquilani fella will provide the same direction and skill as Xabi. Two positives I noticed going back to the preseason was the improved play and leadership of Jamie Carragher and the play of the longhair Andriy Voronin. As a big fan I feel we need all the help we can get. I kinda think w/o Xabi though we are already totally screwed. BTW I think Man U. gets that four in a row when it's all said and done. :lmao:

Glen Johnson also is a positive for Liverpool in my book. He looked very dangerous going forward on Sunday and Spurs fouled him everytime he got near the box(he suffered 4 fouls on the day).

anyway.......more action on tap today.

Some interesting CL matches :hophead: Celtic will present an interesting road challenge for Arsenal today, I doubt Arsenal puts up 6 again, I suspect a 1-1 draw here.

Sporting vs Fiorentina is another game I may watch a bit of.

According to my cable guide, FSC is tape delaying the Arsenal Celtic game in favor of Olympiakos and Sheriff, but FoxSports is showing Arsenal Celtic live, and in HD. Weird.

I think it's because FSC wasn't originally going to show Arsenal/Celtic, but they picked it up this past weekend....and I can only assume they didn't want to move the Olympiakos game out of its original timeslot.

I wonder why though? I'm sure close to ten out of ten soccer fans would prefer to watch the British teams live. Maybe they don't want to run the same game simultaneously on two different channels.

Oh, yeah I would agree with that. Still, it is a shame Sporting isn't on.
