The reaction to Rossi's injury on SBI is horrible. From the same people who get excited every time we find a new "American" playing in the Bundesliga.
Yeah, I don't get the hatred. I'll root against the Azzurri but Rossi is living out his boyhood dream. He's clearly eligible to play for either country; there are no naturalization shenanigans going on. It's US Soccer's problem to develop a better forward, not Rossi's.

Trying to muster sympathy for Rossi injury...Nope, can't get there.
I didn't watch the whole RM / Villarreal game. Did he get hurt there? You should feel bad for his team, as he was the only player doing anything on the squad.
I don't root for or against him, but I do follow him. IMO, health is going to be the only thing that keeps him from the title of best American born player ever IMO.
I root for him.

Me too. Unless he's playing against my team.

Clearly eligible, but its BS like his infamous "I'm American everywhere but on the soccer field" (paraphrasing) that rubs me the wrong way. Its just nonsense. While the German-American issue is similar, its not quite the same. Those guys' fathers were American soldiers that were stationed over there because they were serving their country. Rossi's family left Italy by choice, but when the time came to pick a country, he just went with the better team. The kid learned to play in Italy and I have no problem with him making that choice. But if you're gonna play for Italy, be Italian. The "I'm an American who just happens to play soccer for Italy because they're better" #### is lame. That being said, I would never wish an injury on the guy. However, its not like I'm broken up about it. He's still a mutli-millionaire and he'll heal. I absolutely took plenty of joy when he was cut from the world cup team.

This sucks. Love DirecTV not as big a fan of Uverse. Had it about a year and was hoping to go back after my contract is up... But not if FSC is gone!Does anyone like Grant Wahl? His recent tweet was "It will never happen (i think), but how big would the global audience be if the Premier League used playoffs to decide a champion?"This rubbed me the wrong way and I am not sure why. Maybe because of the FA Cup and Champions League. Maybe because the US is really the only country that does playoffs like he is suggesting (that I know of)? Plus could it really increase globally when most are watching their own leagues? Seems kind of shortsided and to much based in American culture and not worldwide. Also, seems like Soccer internationally is the only true place where the "regular season" means something (College football is about the bowl games despite their claims a playoff would diminish the reg season importance.)Or maybe I am just easily annoyed this morning...Your thoughts?
Big Grant Wahl fan here, and I'm sure this would actually do a lot to increase the global audience. While I love that the best team over the course of the season is the eventual champion and I think it's the fairest way to settle things - I mean, what's more fair than playing every team twice, once home, once away - it can be somewhat anticlimactic.

Really like him. I think he is consistently the best US writer and has been for years now. Don't get too concerned about a random tweet, he was just making an observation is all. He was not in any way suggesting it will happen.
Oh i know it was a random observation, just struck a nerve for some reason. I personally hate the idea of an American style playoff in Europe. Not necessary and I do not think it will increase the global appeal. Might increase the American appeal though....
They already have playoffs in England in the Championship. Before we die, I could see something in the top flight especially as teams need new ways to generate revenue.
The playoffs aren't to decide the league title, though....they're for 3rd-place. I guess placement doesn't really matter because making the EPL is all that counts, but the top finisher in the league technically wins the title (for whatever that's worth).ETA - I know you already know this, but I'm just saying....it's not quite the same.

Playoffs in the EPL could go towards Europe qualifying in the same way they do towards promotion in the Chip.

BUNDESLIGA QUESTION

I have one of my soccer players(and my son's friend from school) moving to Stuttgart, Germany in two weeks. Thought about getting him a going away present.

is the #7 Martin Harnik jersey the one to get?

yay?

nay?

He is their leading scorer, but I don't know that he's a big enough name for that. I would suggest a jersey without a name or number on it. When I look at their current squad the only name that stands out to me is Cacau.

If he's moving to Stuttgart, why not get him a USA jersey? The will be no shortage of VfB stuff readily available to him when he gets there. BTW - Great city imo and a great football club.

It can be anticlimactic, but more often than not (imo) leads to an exciting final few weeks. It seems almost every year at least 2 or 3 of the big leagues go to the final week, when you consider the important battles for uefa spots and relegation.

With German Americans being unearthed daily, he might fit in better with a US shirt :)

Chelsea - Arsenal at Stamford Bridge tomorrow morning should be a good one. The gooners are on good form the past few weeks and Chelsea has been playing a more attacking style than I've seen since the Ranieri days (of which I saw maybe 10 games total).

for the Blues:

Cech

Boswinga Ivanovic JT Cole

Mierles Obi-Wan Frankie

Sturridge Torres Mata

I fully expect Chelsea to put a beat down on Arsenal tomorrow morning. Torres back off suspension, and they played inspired vs QPR last week after getting down a man, and then I believe they were down a man against Everton in Carling cup play and went on to win. Chelsea is a bit thin right now, without Ramires and Essien and Boswinga and Drogba are suspended?

I don't think Arsenal has the ability to keep up with them, but we shall see. RVP is brilliant, but Walcott and Gervinho don't impress me in big games. Vermaellen's back right? That will help, but not enough.

I'll be up early, United @ Everton. I really hope United comes to play and thrashes the depleted home side. Everton usually plays United tough, especially at home, but without Cahill, Neville, Drenthe, it will be an uphill battle. SAF has been a bit reluctant to play Rooney away vs his old club as the crowd can be a bit harsh....but this is really a must win game for United. They rested most of their players midweek - although Vidic started, and Cleverly was back, but I would expect a very strong United side tomorrow, no more ####### around.

Bosingwa served his suspension during the mid-week League Cup game

We FINALLY have Fox Soccer and Gol Tv in HD on Comcast in the Philly Suburbs.

Channels 1512 and 1513, respectively. You guys with Comcast around the country might want to check your lineups to see if you also have these channels.

Bosingwa is available and will certainly start, Drogba is still on suspension. Ramires is fit and may start. I expect Mikel to be out there because its Arsenal, and it will be either Ramires or Mierles opposite Lamps in the midfield. Also, I don't know how much Yossi has been playing for Arsenal, but he can't play tomorrow due to the loan terms.

Ballsy performance by the Gunners. I can't wait to see Wilshere and Ramsey play together
So far, this Arsenal team is better overall than last year's despite losing Cesc and Nasri because they just play mentally tougher. Everyone is always talking about defense, and certainly that's valid, but the problem for me last year was simply that they weren't tough. ManU routinely finds ways to get stoppage time equalizers and winners, even when they're playing badly. That's a direct reflection of Ferguson's mentality imprinted on his club.

Arsenal of recent seasons typically gives up such goals. This year that is different so far. They weren't playing any better than Chelsea today, but they competed better. That was the difference.

Trying to compose myself and relay my thoughts:

1. What a ####### fantastic game, and what a fantastic, thrilling sport...and I'm not just saying that because my team won. This game is a perfect example of exciting soccer, and enough to make any hater reconsider his position. I really hope the new guy who was posting questions in here recently was watching this game. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire game, heart racing, and I literally paced around my apartment for the entire last 30 minutes of the game. Arsenal rate right up there with me with the Bills and the USMNT for my favorite teams, and maybe it's a poor example because the Bills have sucked recently, but I can't remember being on the edge of my seat for the entire football game like I was for this one. Even when the Bills beat the Pats recently, which was awesome. IMO, nothing compares to the sport of soccer for drama save for playoff hockey...and this was just a regular season game.

II. The defense - I don't think Arsenal played that badly defensively. Djourou, however, was still the worst. Numerous times he made runs down the right flank (since when is Djourou a right-back :X ) and dogged it when getting back. McManaman was all over him early on when he was nowhere to be found on a Chelsea attack. WTF? Santos had a bit of a jekyll-and-hyde game for me today. He won some really pretty challenges and is really proving to be a stout defender considering his mobility as a left-back. He made some fantastic runs, but Chelsea were able to work around him a few times. And he flopped on that Mata goal and rolled around looking for a foul rather than getting back on defense. And WTF was Mertesacker doing on that Terry goal? Oof.

%. The midfield - It's been apparent since a few weeks ago, but wow, Ramsey has been spectacular this season. He was probably my MOTM today. He was everywhere offensively and defensively and had a hand in everything. Great performance. I thought Alex Song had a strong game as well. Dogged defending, strong in defense without being overly physical, a good field presence...just what you'd like to see from him. I almost wonder if Arsenal are playing Arteta too deep. He wasn't involved as much as I'd have liked.

). Forwards - not sure what else there is to say about RvP....when healthy, he's a monster. He looks to be in superb form (27 goals in 27 games). Fantastic cool finish to give Arsenal the 4-3 lead, and nice strike for the insurance goal.

#$. Who was it in here who kept bagging on Walcott's finishing ability? I wasn't kidding when I kept saying it's vastly improved from the last few years and that he's turned into quite the viable goal-scorer. What a great goal (and abject defending from Chelsea) and just a great finish at the near-post.

VI. I'll let the Chelsea-guys handle their aspects, but Cech has to be pretty disappointed with himself today. Still one of the world's best, but he can't be happy after being beaten TWICE on his near-post - despite getting a hand on RvP's last one. Juan Mata is a world-class player, damn. What a ridiculously awesome goal....left foot, 25+ yards out, hit perfectly....a world-class goal from a world-class player. But Fernando Torres....he was pretty bad today, I think. I never thought I'd see the day, but I'm well-aware of Arsenal's defensive inconsistencies and I wasn't worried about Torres one bit. Not sure what other options they had, but I was literally relieved that he was in there. I would've been more worried if they had played Lukaku, for example, up there instead.

Bottom line is that I think Tribulation hit the nail on the head. Arsenal weren't necessarily the better team today, but they really looked like they wanted the game more. Amazing to think where the team was mentally and physically after losing 8-2 to United...no way I would've envisioned such a win at Stamford Bridge just two months later.

These 4:30 - 5:00 start times are wearing me out. I fell back asleep during City-Wolves but it's not the same as contiguous REM cycles

On Eagles-Cowboys day, the Union made the front page of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Not the front page of the sports section - the front page.

Can't wait for 5PM. Cmon the U!
Sounds like it is going to be fun!Triple header of MLS playoff games today.

NY LA on ESPN2 at 3

Phi Hou on ESPN2 at 5

KC Col on FSC at 7

Dvr is going to get a work out. I am loading up on mountain dew so that I can watch these tonight after wifey goes to sleep.

I didn't watch the first half so I don't know if it's been mentioned, but what the #### happened to the field? Some miscue with the snow removal? It looks like trash. Horrible.

Whoa. Postgame semi-brawl between players from both teams. Marquez looks to be right in the middle of it; an NY defender got knocked down in the scrum.

:lmao: Marquez guns the ball at an LA player after the final whistle, Juninho and Cristman give Marquez and the other NY player shoves in the back, Marquez and the NY defender bump into each other and take massive flops. Marquez goes down grabbing his face :lmao: :lmao:

They put down a tarp for the snow and then they had bull dowzers cleaning off the snow. On two passes, the bull dowzers bared down and scraped up the field. Considering how much snow there was, it could have been much worse.

Marquez and Junihno both got red cards. I really hope this is Marquez's last game in the league. They may have a tough time moving him but I still hope an MFL club will take him off Red Bulls hands. He is such a bad influenced and his skills no longer should command that much money.

I continue to be impressed with Josh Saunders. He has played well all year in net for LA and was fantastic today. He is still not a finished product but if he can improve on this base, he has a good shot to be in the national team picture in a couple of years.

Yeah, but, he's also a piece of ####.
