Good news for Omar Gonzalez. LA took him off the DL and he is available to play today. He has been tweeting the past week to expect a surprise about his availability and this is excellent news as it is less than 6 months from his ACL surgery. Hopefully in the next week or so he can get some sub minutes and then eventually move back into the starting lineup. I have no idea what his form is going to be but if by chance he recovers, he should make for another CB choice come the September qualifiers.===========For our newer fans, here is a quick history of Gonzalez. One of the US's top young center backs. Drafted in 2009 he was voted MLS Rookie of the Year. In 2010, he made the all star team and in 2011, by far his best year, he was named MLS Defender of the Year. Then Klinsmann made the suggestion that in the offseason he train over in Europe. LA did one better than just training and secured a loan deal with FC Nurnberg of Germany. In his very first practice with the new club, in January, he collided with Timmy Chandler and tore his ACL.
Omar in the starting XI for LA tonight vs the Union
Just tuned in to the game. Great news. They said in pregame that he went 45 minutes in a scrimmage earlier and feels a 100%. Probably will need to get over the mental barrier of his first hard tackle.

hire two additional refs, one at each side just to watch that goal area
Didn't do Ukraine any good.
I'm not sure why those guys even have headsets. The head referee always makes the call regardless of his positioning. There are plays in the box almost every game where that goalline referee has a much better view of the situation, but the head referee makes a decision before any consultation could even take place.FIFA has some intrinsic fear of using anything outside of the referee and two linesman approach to judging games. Are we really supposed to believe that it's a struggle to come up with a reasonable method of utilizing goalline technology?
It's not Fifa this time, amazingly. They are actually doing what they can to push this through finally. It is friggan UEFA that is acting like idiots now fighting this how ever they can. They have already stomped their feet and said it won't be used in Champions League games (and I assume Europa games as well) even if it gets approved.

RVP:

"As announced earlier this year I had a meeting with the boss [Arsene Wenger] and Mr [ivan] Gazidis after the season," said Van Persie in a statement. "This was a meeting about the club's future strategy and their policy. Financial terms or a contract have not been discussed, since that is not my priority at all.

"I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days. Out of my huge respect for Mr Wenger, the players and the fans I don't want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal should move forward.

"I've thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions.

"I love the club and the fans, no matter what happens. I have grown up and became a man during my time with Arsenal. Everybody at the club and the fans have always supported me over the years and I have always given my all (and more) on and off the pitch.

"I am very proud of being part of this fantastic club for the last eight years. As soon as Mr Gazidis is back from his two-week holiday in America further meetings will follow and I will update you if and when there are more developments."

Could see this coming, but it still sucks.
Yeah, I poked a bit of fun at the end of the season, but it really does suck. I like the NFL model where there is a means to keep the big stars at the team so I'm not sure soccer will ever trump football as my favorite sport to follow. Anything like that would be illegal in Europe. You can talk about loyalty all you want, but at the end of the day it's going to be about money. With teams all around the world being bought by people so wealthy losses in the hundreds of millions or even billions is irrelevant top teams will struggle to keep their stars. The EPL has the added disadvantage of sharing TV revenues equally. It's great for the league because it brings parity, but Barca, RM, Milan, etc. all have massive team TV deals that will always keep them competitive.

It wouldn't mind seeing him at Barca as I think he is one of the few strikers that could actually fit there, but I suspect he will end up at City or Chelsea. Most likely City as I think they are going to drop Dzecko and Tevez.
v. Persie has been at Arsenal for eight years, during which time they've won just one FA Cup (his first season at Highbury). He's been a great performer for the club when healthy and has never been among the highest paid players in England. His contract is coming up, which makes him free to leave under the rules of just about every sport in the world. Arsenal still has a year to get something in return by selling him off to one of the few teams that can afford him. Wenger got the best value out of the player while he was in North London, which is in line with his managerial style. Whoever signs him to his next contract will be paying a lot more for seasons that will include his decline.I don't see why this sucks or is unfair.
If Arsenal actually use the money they get from him on other players it could pay off. But there's a good chance they just sit on the majority of it. If they City includes Tevez in a deal I'll be pretty stoked.

I agree with all of that. I just used the word sucks because I'm an Arsenal fan.

The other part that sucks is that RVP basically saying that he is convinced management will not do what they need to in order to be a legit contender.

Corinthians 2 Boca Juniors 0. Corinthians win the Libertadores Cup.
Nonstop car horns up and down Paulista, fireworks going off all over the place, lots of drunken Corinthian fans.Went to a bar for the first 15-20 minutes that was right off of Paulista. Great atmosphere, crowd spilling into the streets but we couldn't find a spot with a good shot of the telly or a chance at getting another beer. Ended up finding a small, yet passionate group at a bar/deli a few blocks over with cheap beer. Watched the rest of the match from there. Ended up paying 30 Reals ($15) for 6 quart bottles of beer.Holy ####, it sounds like I am in the middle of a war zone!!!! Imagine setting off industrial grade fireworks in the middle of time square, that's what it sounds like....Chupa Boca!

Amazing atmosphere, I can't imagine what its going to be like for the World Cup. Have to seriously think about finding my way down here for that event. True passion for the sport by the whole country unlike anything I ahead ever seen.

That's gotta be awesome. I don't know too much about Brazilian teams but I know Corinthians is a big one. Surprised to see this is the first time they've won the Copa Libertadores.

I don't think Barca can fit RVP into their budget this summer, their priority is a CB right now. And the cupboard on the first squad is already pretty full upfront, nevermind the help on the way in the near future from the B team and possibly Neymar.Chelsea, Juve, and City all seem like the most likely candidates.

Official Arsenal reply to RVP statement:

“

We have to respect Robin’s decision not to renew his contract. Robin has one year to run on his current contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the Club.“We are planning with ambition and confidence for next season with Arsenal’s best interests in mind.”

Corriere dello Sport: Michael Bradley about to sign w/ Roma for 4 years, €800,000 per year.

The Revs just made a pretty good signing (if the rumors are to be believed). They are about to sign Jerry Bengston to a 4 year deal.Bengston is 25 years old and has led the Honduran league in scoring three consecutive sessions. He will also be on the Honduran Olympic team as one of the three over aged players. He fills a spot at striker the Revs sorely need and may solidify their push for a playoff spot.
This is official now. He will take up a designated player spot. He is the 25th designated player in the league this year.

He has been a "good" performer prior to the last two seasons and last season was plagued by injuries. Quite frankly, he never should have been amongst the highest players in England until this season. He is now at the pinnacle of his career and deserves a bigger contract which I'm sure Arsenal have offered. What sucks is that not even a club as big as Arsenal can pay enough to keep a key player like van Persie. To accomodate the kind of salary RvP would demand in today's environment would force them to rearrange their entire pay structure. It's simply not possible. They could pay him, but they couldn't afford the collateral payments to other players or make him happy in the transfer market. Not unless they get bought out by someone who can suck up the losses anyway. Hell, not even United can afford the pay structures of teams like City or Chelsea. So yeah, I think this new era of soccer where billionaires are willing to eat billions in losses to buy a trophy sucks for most clubs. I'm a Tottenham fan, but I don't want to see RvP leave Arsenal. Not because they can't afford to keep him anyway.

If you are a fan of a team like Barca, RM, or AC Milan that exist in leagues that will let you hold more revenue then it probably works out just fine. If you are a fan of a Chelsea, City, PSG, etc. then you are clearly going to support the current environment. Ferguson has largely insulated United from this because he is so incredibly gifted at getting the best out of his players, but it's going to hit United as well when he's gone.

So Arsenal has to sell RVP this summer? Having him on the roster during the season would be a disaster, and you can't let him walk for nothing, no?
Correct. They need to move him ASAP. They are just posturing with that statement.
Yup, it's not going to be hard though. Nasri was on his last year and City still paid top dollar for him. When money doesn't matter you aren't going to let a deal go south because you want a "good" deal. Barcelona's general negotiating tactic of spending a year unsettling the player to get the rate down is obviously out as well. I don't think they want to spend that kind of money on a striker anyway to be honest. They still run like a business, just a business with a lot of money. I would put his next club at 70% City, 20% RM, 10% Barca. Chelsea and PSG also have the money, but if he wants trophies PSG is still a few years away and Chelsea don't really need another striker. Some have speculated that this is contract posturing by RvP, but he doesn't really seem like the kind of guy that would do that to them.

What's the deal with Juve? How are they suddenly in on everybody?
They have always been a huge club in Italy, but have been working their way up since they were relegated for match fixing. They need to bolster their entire roster to prepare for Europe though. I really doubt they drop that much money on one player.

Chelsea does need a striker, no? They're not going to just roll with Torres up there full-time, right? And aren't they pursuing Hulk? The British papers are saying that Man United is also in on RVP. If Madrid added him, I think they'd need to move Benzema or Higuain, as both of them would probably become pretty unhappy. The Daily Mirror said that Barcelona's interested, but I think they're probably just driving up the price. I just cannot see it happening given their strength up front. Their #1 priority right now is CB, and they've already stated that they're not interested in adding another forward this summer. Unless they sold Villa or something...

I try not to deal in twitter rumors, but I've heard Higuain as the other part of a Modric for cash + player since Sahin apparently said no.

I was assuming the Hulk deal was going to go through. Unless PSG tries a last minute hijack I don't see how it doesn't. United can't compete on financial terms with the other contendors and with Ferguson on his last legs I don't think they will be able to trump City.

If you are a fan of a Chelsea, City, PSG, etc. then you are clearly going to support the current environment. Ferguson has largely insulated United from this because he is so incredibly gifted at getting the best out of his players, but it's going to hit United as well when he's gone.
Arsenal Vice Chairman David Dein was on the three-man arbitration panel that voted to allow Wimbledon FC to move to Milton Keynes. So #### 'em.

Saw this on Big Soccer. Don't know if it is official yet but since Sky and ESPN UK released their schedules, this is probably pretty close

Forlan signs with Internacional in Brazil.
The Brazilian clubs are suddenly flush with cash compared to where they were years ago. You are going to see a slow migration of players to Brazil in the future. It won't be the super stars of course but you will see some surprisingly big names going to Brazil which has be nearly unheard for a long long time. They are even starting the the China/MLS technique of signing big name players in their 30's. Clarence Seedorf has become the highest paid foreigner in Brazilian football after recently signing for Rio de Janeiro outfit Botafogo. This influx of cash will also allow them to keep their good younger players a little longer than normal in the domestic league.

Reports in Spain suggest that Athletic Bilbao manager Marcelo Bielsa has resigned after the club failed to support him over an altercation with construction staff.Bielsa returned for pre-season training ahead of the 2012-13 season to find the club's Lezama training centre resembling a construction site and was involved in a furious row with construction staff."The condition of Lezama is an insult to the players and I am responsible for them," Bielsa explained. "I was indignant because that was not recognised and began to say offensive things. I don't respect him because he did a bad job."

Any decent job openings left out there? Bielsa's pretty highly regarded and his teams play a very attacking style.

We were talking earlier about DC United getting some new owners to help with the stadium. Looks like they got them.

Philadelphia 76ers minority owners Erick Thohir and Jason Levien are expanding to another sport, reaching agreement to become co-owners of DC United in Major League Soccer, according to NBA sources familiar with the move.Sources told ESPN.com that Thohir and Levien are poised, pending MLS approval, to become partners next week with longtime DC United owner Will Chang, who also serves on the board of Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants.DC United has won the MLS Cup a record four times (1996, 1997, 1999 and 2004). CEO Kevin Payne, sources say, will continue to run the club's day-to-day operations.Sources say Thohir, an Indonesian media magnate who ranks as the first Asian owner in NBA history, and Levien, who worked as an NBA player agent before a stint in theSacramento Kings' front office that preceded his involvement with the Sixers, will make the construction of a new soccer-specific stadium for DC United their top priority.Currently sitting atop the Eastern Conference, DC United has played at RFK Stadium since the league's inception in 1996 and has long craved a more suitably sized home ground.

Hopefully they are smart enough to stay in the District and not move out to a suburb.

I love the schedule gods. One of the best part of sports.

Last April, Colorado Rapids player Brian Mullin made a horrendous tackle on one of MLS's best young players in Steve Zakuani. Result was a broken tibia and broken fibula. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32O6fDvaoT0

Tomorrow night, more than a year later, there is a decent chance that Zakuani may make his return, at home, against of course Brian Mullin and the Rapids.

Game is on NBCSN at 11:00pm eastern with ex Sounders announcer Arlo White likely to be doing the game for NBCSN.

I was not that interested in this game but may watch just to see what is sure to be a great reception should Zakuani sub in late in the match.

Wayne Bridge to Brighton. Lots of history there I suppose ...
His £90000 a week salary is probably higher than all his new teammates combined
Most likely. The average salary in the Championship last year was £4,059. Not bad though. I doubt anyone makes around $300K playing AAA ball full time.
Do you multiply the weekly salary by 52 to get total salary or is it just like a 10 month type salary?

x52Bridge makes the equivalent of around $7.25M. He appeared in 10 games last season on loan to Sunderland.

Tony Fernandes reveals 'great first step' in QPR search for new stadium

06 July 2012

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes believes the club have made a "great first step" in their search for a new stadium.

The Malaysian businessman's comments came shortly after the west Londoners revealed a major announcement would be made next week that could help turn the club into a "global" brand.

It has been suggested Monday's announcement will be about a move away from their Loftus Road home to a new stadium, although there are reports that QPR will unveil a South Korean player.

It is though the club are interested in Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-yueng, while bookmakers SkyBet have suspended betting on Manchester United's Park Ji-sung joining the Hoops.

In an invite sent to the national and international media, QPR said: "The announcement will put the QPR brand on a global scale and is further demonstration of the board's continuing efforts to move the club forward and become established in the Barclays Premier League.

"QPR chairman Tony Fernandes, vice-chairman Amit Bhatia, manager Mark Hughes and CEO Philip Beard will all be in attendance.

"Please note, the club is in no position to make any further comment on the announcement of this press conference."

Fernandes revealed earlier this week that the club are evaluating three potential sites for a new stadium and that as many as four more signings could be made this summer.

Discussions on the former seem to be progressing well, with the Rs chairman posting on Twitter today: "Excellent stadium meeting Wow. Looks great. Going to make big announcement. Hopefully see amit [bhatia, vice-chairman] in a few hours to brief him. Wow."

He then added: "Stadium will be in west london. Will not lose overall atmosphere. Lots to do and many pitfalls but great first step."
Sad to see Loftus Road go. But I'm all for big plans!QPR! QPR! QPR!

Talk is cheap, stadiums aren't. I think there are limits to how many new venues London capital can absorb, particularly given the economic climate. QPR will have to get in line with the conversion of the Olympic venues, Spurs' Northumberland development and Chelsea's big plans.Fernandes is rich but nowhere near Sheik Mansour levels, so he can't take on the lion's share himself. He's nothing if not ambitious but the current differences between QPR and the big clubs is nearly as large as the gap between Fernandes' Caterham F1 team and Ferrari.

hire two additional refs, one at each side just to watch that goal area
That's just Platini being a #####. He hates any kind of technology in soccer. His position will be fine until there is a major screw-up and then every single fingers in the world, including FIFA's, will be pointed straight at him.
