Huh, I did not realize this factoid.

The US has never won a WCQing game in Jamaica. Only three games ever but still something interesting.
I don't see that changing next week.Lots of good young speedy players in Jamaica these days- and playing ball out of the country (so the usual lack of professionalism, run out of fitness in the last 15 minutes vs the US thing probably won't factor). And definitely a tougher away venue than T&T or any of the other Carib island nations. But still nowhere near the cauldrons in Central America.
I really want 4 points from these two games. Any less and I will be very nervous. Hopefully the win in Mexico can give them some confidence that they can win with out every big gun available for them since it is looking like the US could be missing some key players

What a wonderful chance this would be for Jozy to stand up and say "my turn to carry the team".
What do you see for the lineup?Howard

Cherundolo, Boca(?), Cameron, Fabian (Castillo?)

LD, Jones, Edu? (Torres?), Shea? (Zusi? Williams? Fabian? DMB?)

Jozy, Dempsey? (Gomez? Boyd?)

A lot of question marks in there. Dempsey and Boca not playing for anybody. No Bradley leaves a huge hole in the middle alongside Jones. Who partners with Jozy?

eta: will JK go 4-4-2 or the mutated 4-3-3 (that looks an awful lot like a 4-4-2 most of the time)?
Some notesCastillo is hurt so I don't think he will be on the roster.

Donovan has not kicked a ball since the Mexico game so he might not be available

Boca has played 6 times already for Rangers, just at a lower level so at least he is a bit game fit unlike Dempsey.

If it was me, I would try something like this, assuming no LD, Dempsey or Bradley

.....................Howard

Cher......Cameron.......Boca..........Lichaj

Gomez.....Edu.........Jones..........Johnson

....................Jozy...........Boyd/Wando

But I think Klinsmann will do something more like this

....................Howard

Cher..........Cameron.....Boca.......Johnson

.........................Beckerman

...............Williams/Edu............Jones

Gomez.........................................Torres

..........................Jozy

Martinez ist jetzt ein Bayer

Javier Martinez has completed his transfer from Athletic Bilbao to FC Bayern. The Spain international sealed the deal on Wednesday afternoon by concluding the formalities of cancelling his contract with the Basque club, obtaining clearance for the switch from the Spanish FA (RFEF) and league association (LFP), and signing his new five-year contract, keeping him in Munich until 30 June 2017.

Martinez passed the obligatory pre-transfer medical in the early hours of Wednesday morning at the Munich practice of FCB chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt. He flew to Madrid later in the morning to finalise arrangements with the FA and league body. “I'm very happy and really looking forward to playing for a club with this extraordinary history," the 23-year-old told FCB.tv, “I've had to wait a long time for this, but the waiting is over at last."
 I'm also an Arsenal fan, so Bayern's approach to the transfer market is refreshing by comparison.

Saw on Sky Sports that Modric is starting tonight, although they didn't give the full lineup.
Barcelona: Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Adriano, Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Alexis, Messi y PedroReal Madrid: Iker; Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo; Khedira, Xabi; Di María, Özil, Cristiano; e Higuaín.

Who would be a better fit for Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers' new system - Andy Carroll or Clint Dempsey? I'm still hoping they find a way to get Dempsey, though it seems the only way that'll happen is if somebody makes a good offer for Carroll. And I'm hoping Carroll stays, but I guess you can't have it both ways.

Shows you what Sky Sports knows. :shrug:I know Puyol's fit to play, but I'm glad Tito went with Pique/Masch in central defense.

I have only seen Liverpool play twice this year (once in preseason) so I am not totally sure (we have a bunch of Pool fans in this thread that could answer this question). While I want Dempsey to land some where soon and think his style is fairly camealon like that he could adjust to most systems, I also don't think Carrol is the complete donkey he is made out to be.Welcome to the thread!

Liverpool doesn't have enough attacking depth if Suarez is lost due to injury or suspension. I'm not impressed by Borini. Carroll gets a lot of stick for a lot of reasons. I don't think he's worthless but he's also not a good fit with what Rogers is trying to do. Dempsey isn't a true #9 but he can score goals and could conceivably slot into the Suarez role. Liverpool has more talent available in Dempsey's preferred role so I don't think he'd be an ideal use of their transfer budget.

Thank you. It's nice to see such a popular soccer thread entrenched in these football forums.

I'll admit that I don't know either player or Rodgers' style well enough to comment on the validity of your points; but out of curiosity, which club do you think Dempsey would best fit? And who would you prefer to see Liverpool get instead of him - if they had the appropriate funds from a potential Carrol move or the like?

Complete left field suggestion for your second question. Jermain Defoe. Rodgers wants clever running and good finishing. Defoe does both. I honestly don't think Dempsey is a perfect fit for any English top 6 side, but if I had to pick one, I'd say Arsenal, who could use an "ugly" goal scorer. Still, Arsenal like to press (not as much as Barca, but still) and Dempsey isn't Captain Workrate.

Would Arsenal make sense for Cpt. Workrate, esp. if they're about to lose Walcott?
Maybe. The thing is that would mean essentialy giving up on Gervinho. And maybe that's appropriate. But maybe he'll settle. Gervinho was very good in Ligue 1. A decent but not great scorer, but an excellent provider. Florent Malouda took a while to settle at Chelsea, but for 18 months or so he was one of their very best players. And it would put another guy presumptively in front of the Ox. Not to mention that the latest transfer rumors say that Walcott won't be sold this summer, at least. Dempsey is versatile, which helps. Like Gervinho, he could play on the left or right. I suppose you could also play a 4-2-3-1 with Dempsey in the hole behind Giroud and let Cazorla play out wide and switch sides like Silva does for Man City.

I suspect Dempsey's best fit in England is with Fulham. He'd probably be a rotation player at best for the the English clubs involved in Europe this year. Newcastle is the possible exception but even there, he'd be competing with Ba and Ben Arfa.I think Liverpool is in year one of a multi-year plan. They don't need another 29 year old complaining about playing time. They need a younger, cheaper attacker who's not a crazy racist donkey or any part thereof. Another defender who can complete a back pass might be nice as well.

I thought Gervinho played mostly on the left, and Dempsey (and Walcott) on the right. They need to use LW and RW designations in footy, like in soccer.Barca's settled this game down, at least.

Gervinho started on the right for Arsenal on Saturday (and on the left for the opener). Dempsey typically played as a left sided midfielder for Fulham before moving into the hole last year. He typically played on the right for the Nats with Landon on the left for Bradley, but they often switched sides and Dempsey would often move to forward after the first substitution. The one attacking position that I don't think Clint can really play is a true 9. Walcott has played exclusively on the right, but keeps complaining that nobody will let him play center forward. In any case, Arsenal isn't set up to have wingers hug the touchlines and throw in crosses. That wouldn't change with Dempsey. If someone's going to provide service from wide for Arsenal, it will be the fullbacks.

Looks like it is a definite Bradley will be out for a few weeks. Not only bad timing to start with his new team but obviously bad timing for the upcoming qualifiers

Bradley will miss Sunday's trip to Inter Milan and possibly a Sept. 16 visit from Bologna. He will also be unavailable for the USA's World Cup 2014 qualifiers against Jamaica on Sept. 7 and 11."Bradley has suffered a first- to second-degree muscle strain in his right thigh," Roma press officer Catia Augelli told MLSsoccer.com. "He has already begun treatment, and will be monitored and reassessed over the next few days. I think he will be missed for about two or three weeks."

It would not shock me if more of these cases for all sports start popping up

D.C. United sued for $12 million by former player

Washington Post Soccer Insider

Bryan Namoff, a long-serving D.C. United defender whose career was cut short by a concussion three years ago, filed a $12 million lawsuit Wednesday against the MLS club and former coach Tom Soehn, claiming they failed to properly evaluate his injury and cleared him to play too soon, reports Steven Goff.

The complaint alleges United was “negligent in its management, care and treatment” of Namoff after he was injured in a game at RFK Stadium on Sept. 9, 2009. He played three days later, which ultimately was the final appearance of his nine-year career.

United spokesman Doug Hicks said the club wouldn’t comment on pending litigation.

Namoff, now 33, says he suffered brain damage and cognitive, memory and sensory loss. He also has permanent headaches and fatigue, sleep problems and hypersensitivity to motion, the lawsuit says.

I think he would actually fit best at Tottenham in a rotation with Adebayor and Sigurdsson. Tottenham won't buy him though. They seem to be really focusing on younger players right now

Arena said that Donovan has started to train indoors. No official word on whether he will be out of the lineup again tomorrow night in the CCL. LA is playing a relatively weak team so they may not risk Landon even if ready.

By the way, anyone who is interested is seeing exciting young US talent, see if you can catch a bit of LA's Jose Villareal. He will remind you a lot of a young Giuseppe Rossi, same body style, both left footed, same low to ground dribbling style.

Villareal is just starting his career though and obviously would have a long way to grow into what Rossi did but still nice to see some interesting raw talent coming through the ranks.

Thought Messi was going to steal the Supercopa with one at the death there - I think he was stunned he didn't find the upper corner on that last shot.

Sucks losing to that team, no matter what the stakes are. Valdes' blunder in the first leg ended up being the difference.

Liverpool fan here...........while Dempsey is my favorite American player, and I certainly wouldn't be upset if they landed him, I would much rather see a player like Daniel Sturridge come over. I've been a fan of his for years, and it doesn't seem like he will ever be given a shot at Chelski. Rumors going around today had Spearing, Adam and possibly Carroll leaving with Walcott and Dempsey coming in. Then I saw a report that Walcott was definitely staying at Arsenal, but with how this transfer window has gone down, I won't believe anything until it's official at the end of the day Friday.

(this is Scooby/Wet Dream, btw)
what is with all the different alias's in such a short time period? You in witness protection?
I killed Scooby when I moved jobs. I figured I could get by with Wetdream and post only in this thread from home, but I got a little hooked in the Apple/Samsung thread. I didn't want to do shtick dilution with Wet Dream, so I created this alias because there is no work and nothing to do this week with all the partners I work with gone (I had also missed a few weeks of work due to a medical condition).
Why would you do this?
Because posting on an internet message board isn't compatible with being a productive attorney.
You're doing it wrong :P

Miserable game. Pyrrhic victory in that they outscored RM after going a man down, but Mascherano and Pique both got torched pretty badly.I liked what little I saw of Song. It'll be interesting to see if they use him in defense, or just to keep Busquets fresh.

I'll second a lot of this. Would prefer Sturridge over Walcott and Dempsey and think he'd fit in well in this system. Also agree with Floppy on Borini; he's been meh so far. Still only 21, he'll get better but he's disappeared for long periods in games already. Pretty excited to see Sahin and Assadi soon. Tasker> suck it
