Seriously, that was an instant classic. Hard-fought game, exciting, back and forth. Glad I set the DVR for 3 hours just in case it went to Extra Time...

:goodposting: I set it for 30min... I don't know about the instant classic part of what you said... I found the game pretty drab and without much class on the offensive side of things. I did think Everton defended brilliantly- and deserved the win based on that. If Fergie showed us the future of United, it's not so hot- kept waiting for somebody from the first team to sub in to make a difference- Berbatov was never going to be that guy. The type of game that would make a Soccer non-believer a Soccer hater, IMO.

It was sloppy, I agree, but it was back and forth for most of the end of the game. Everton with a chance on one end....and then United with a chance at the other end.

Completely agree that both sides had some chances (not great chances, but some) and it was fairly end-to-end.

It may very well be the best shot I've ever seen, but I think Maradona's second goal against England in the '86 World Cup is the best goal I've ever seen. And Ronaldo's goal for Barcelona against Compostela is right up there too.

Absolutely. In recent memory, that goal Argentina scored in the last WC, first round, where the ball went through pretty much the entire team before scoring.And no way the gk saves that- no fault of his at all there; the ball is screaming in and curving away from him. He looked to be positioned perfectly- shaded a little to the near post (cardinal rule to never get beat near) and off his line to cover the angle. What did the announcer say later... a "howitzer" by Ronaldo. That's about it.

eta: For long range shots, does anybody remember Franz Zimmerman from Soccer Made in Germany days? Don't remember the team, but that guy took at least one shot a game from 40 yards +... and scored on them (fantastically) every now and then.

saw a south american last year hit one from that distance in a WC qualifier. didn't befckham score from the defensive side of midfield in MLS last year when the goalie was way out of position? if i'm remembering correctly, it was sickeningly impressive.

I always like seeing a MF with the presence of mind and vision to see the GK far enough off his line to try that kind of thing... but the shot itself is more a clearance than a shot. The guy I was talking about, Zimmerman?, would literally hammer an instep drive from 40-45+ with regularity... ok- now I feel compelled to google
 
I'll take a draw at Anfield. Anyone see the highlights anywhere before the league takes them down? I was in class and couldn't watch...

 
Utterly frustrating. Another trophy for ManUre, unfortunately. Best quote of the night from the BBC commentary - "I still don't even know where to start with that. I'm looking at a Liverpool fan who looks like he won the lottery and lost the ticket. Two 4-4 draws in a week. Just incredible." I don't see any way back for them - they have to be gutted having scored so many goals and having nothing to show for them.

ETA that while Arshavin may have incredible skills, he seems to lack in the class department a little bit.

:excited: I had no dog in that fight, but it was so compelling in prospect that I had to stay up for it. Match started at 3 a.m. here in Asia, and my plan was to watch just the first half. But the footy was such top-shelf stuff I couldn't turn off the TV. First goal for Arsenal came completely against the run of play, and to be honest, aside from Arshavin potting goals every time he touched the ball (apparently this was the first guy to score 4 goals at Anfield since 1946), it was pretty much one way traffic throughout. Benayoun was making dangerous raids down the right flank all match and Kuyt was providing his usual commitment to the cause. For neutral observers, Liverpool's elegant passing game is really a wonder to behold, and with Torres (arguably the best pure striker on the planet right now) at the tip of the sword, Liverpool look at times like the top side in the world. The scoreline certainly flattered Arsenal (not to take anything away from Arshavin's superbly taken goals), and Liverpool's title hopes likely ended today, but the real winner was football. What a show! :thumbup:

:lmao: Extremely well put. I'm an Arsenal supporter, but they did not deserve to be level in this one. Liverpool should have won this easily, but it was a fun game to watch.

A few notes for the Arsenal faithful... Fabianski had a stellar game(I know that sounds odd since he gave up 4 goals, but honestly it could have been many more), Silvestre was awful filling in for the injured Gallas and Djouru, and perhaps my biggest complaint about the game... Wenger started the team in the 4-2-3-1 formation which seems only to insure that Fabregas doesn't touch the ball much. Once they subbed on Walcott for Denilson(allowing Fabregas to slide back into his more typical role), things started to flow much better for the Gunners. And finally, Gibbs has been filling in quite admirably for the injured Clichy. I'm not certain that he is ready for full time LB at the Premier League level, but he is quite close. It's easy to imagine him starting at LB for another squad next campaign since he has no realistic shot at unseating Clichy in the near future.

I have heard a couple of accusations of match fixing going on in Getafe for the last couple of years. That pk looked like it was done on purpose.Looks like no Pepe or Sneijder down the stretch though and Robben will be out for the derby.

Anyone know of a place to get a jersey lettered/numbered?

Two years in a row now my brother has gone to Europe for a week and brought me back a requested jersey....only he can never get them lettered for some reason. So now I have a blank Portugal jersey from last year and a blank Italy jersey for this year.

And I can never find a place to get them lettered/numbered here. Does anyone know a place where they could do this? I'm not talking normal screenprinting, I'm talking the official fonts, numbers, etc. I don't mind shipping them across the country for a few weeks if that's the case.

 
Barca starting off the hardest run of games in soccer today. During the next two and half weeks el Barca plays: Sevilla, Valencia, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Villareal. It is going to be tough to get through this gauntlet ahead in la Liga and alive in the Champions League.

However, Barca started off in a huge way demolishing third-place Sevilla 4-0 at Camp Nou today with Messi and Puyol resting.

My team is shambolic. Patético indeed.Nightmare season for them. The highs and lows have been redonkulous. They're gonna lose either Forlán or el Kun this offseason and will be a worse team in 2009-2010. They won't sniff CL if they lose one of those guys, especially Kun.The most disgusting thing is that their defense is arguably worse this year than last, and that's after bringing in 2 high profile defenders, Ujfalusi and Heitinga. Heitinga didn't play against Racing, but still. They should be ashamed. It's pretty sad when I long for the days that Giourkas Seitaridis plays right back.
 
In other news the Tractor Boys hired Roy Keane to replace Magilton. I know him as a player but not much as a coach. The 606 for ITFC is a bit bipolar on the appointment. Some are saying what a huge mistake it is and others that it is practically auto-promotion move.

He walked from Sunderland after losing transfer control, but not before taking them to the Premier. Besides that I don't know jack.

Anyone with any insight on his style as a coach?

ETA Apparently Dos Santos wants to come back on loan for the full season next year. The dude has been a monster in his few appearances. Well, maybe not a monster, but he can shoot the PK anytime.

Backing what you said, I saw on FSC that he's said something along the lines of "my head's not in the game- I'm going to sit out the season and see what happens after that".
