Of course the kids are dreaming of playing in Europe, but you're talking about Malouda going over there after his 34th birthday. Hardly the same thing, and something that is fairly common for South American players.
Not sure I get what you're saying here.My point was only that it's interesting- and rare, IME- for a non-S American to want to play there. I've always thought it would be amazing to play in Argentina or Brazil... but it's not a stated goal of any pro I've ever heard.
Just thought you were implying that it is something that even Brazilians don't do with the part I bolded "The opposite of every Brazilian player's goal currently".
yeah... I guess I was saying that too- same point you made- I think- with the "of course the kids...etc"

Quick question:I am a new user of Twitter. I have been getting a lot of good soccer news and tidbits from it. If I want to respond to a specific tweet and have it only go to the person who made the original tweet, how do I do that? I am using the Iphone app if that makes a difference. I see a function to retweet but that seems to be something I would do to pass a long a tweet to people who follow me. I really just want to be able to make a response to someone who might be asking a question of his followers...
You're wanting to do a direct message, but I think the other person may have to be following you as well. I love twitter but I've never actually tweeted so I'm not really sure how that works. Which app are you using?

The app is just called Twitter on the IPhone. For example, Landon asked all of his followers where he should eat in Chi town while they were training. From subsequent tweets it was obvious that many people had answered him and I did not get the feeling that he was following each person.I have seen similar things with people like Peter King and others.

You should be able to just reply, which is different than a retweet and a direct message. For example, on the app I use, if I click on a particular tweet, it gives me the option to reply, retweet, or send a direct message. Pretty sure all of those people are just replying, and then at the beginning of their tweet it'll start with @landycakes or whatever his screen name is.

Hicks> GTFO :bye:
Normally I'm not one to curse, but there are not enough expletive's in any combination of languages that I want to say to this man.
:goodposting: Looking at what Henry is going to be forking over and it's effects, I guess I can go along with it. I'm not his biggest fan after the scummy Red Sox-Marlins fiasco in 2002.
LFC supporters have a right to be suspicious of their new American overlords, but I think Henry and Co. have a much better track record that the current regime. Like 'em or not, the Red Sox have been a model MLB franchise on and off the field. Their efforts to renovate Fenway while extracting maximum revenue from it could be repeated at Anfield. They've generally hired smart people who have made good player moves more often than not. The new owners won't be able to outspend Chelsea and City but they should be able to field competitive teams on a regular basis.Hicks and Gillett are opportunists who wouldn't recognize a strategic vision if it bit them on the butt.

These are my choices I see in the menu:1) Retweet2) Quote Tweet3) Post Link to Tweet4) Mail Tweet5) TranslateNone of these sound like a reply to the original sender.......doh, I see it now. It was a separate icon away from the menu. When I hit the icon, it is the exact thing I am looking for (Reply to sender). Thanks for your help..........Now I can tell Landon how he should move off the ball better :lmao: lol

February, 2007 - Texan Tom Hicks emerges as joint bidder with Gillett and the pair offer £435 million for the ownership of Liverpool - this includes £215 million for the building of a proposed new stadium in Stanley Park - and the offer is accepted. The club is valued at £218.9 million, with debts of £44.8 million.
May 2010 - Financial results for the year ending July 2009 show the club made a record pre-tax loss of £54.9 million, with interest repayments on loans undertaken by Hicks and Gillett accounting for £40.1 million of that.

Ok, here's the final list from the Great Sports Draft... discuss:

SOCCER PLAYER

1. Pele

2. Diego Maradona

3. Franz Beckenbauer

4. Ronaldinho

5. Johann Cruyff

6. Ronaldo

7. Michel Platini

8. Alfredo di Stefano

9. Bobby Charlton

10. Zinedine Zidane

11. Mia Hamm

12. Ference Puskas

13. Zico

14. Lev Yashin

15. Gerd Muller

16. Marco van Basten

17. Eusebio

18. George Best

19. Bobby Moore

20. Garrincha

Anybody glaring left off? I think Lothar Matteus was better than some of these... and might have a case for a GK or two (Schmeichel, Sep Maier) or Wing Back or two (Dungha, Roberto Carlos, Briegl, John Bornstein).

At least all of these deserve discussion, even Hamm and Ronaldinho.

I have no idea what the criteria would be to judge best soccer player, but I don't know why the notion of Mia Hamm is being scoffed off so lightly.

I hardly follow women's soccer at all, but to me, Mia Hamm is pretty much the face of women's soccer world wide. Does she not have the most international goals of all time?

actually, just checking out her wiki page, she does, for men and women. she was FIFA player of the year twice. She won four national championships in college, now granted NC is a powerhouse, but she is probably the most dominant woman's player ever by a pretty fair margin. I can't even imagine who would be #2, as it's so clear cut and dry.

Would she be very competitive against men of her skill level? Probably not, so if your basing this judgment on talent alone with a blind eye towards sex, I can see her being omitted completely. But if you're comparing men soccer players to men soccer players and women to women....well, pretty sure she'd be top 3-4.

For my money, George Best at his best was better than a lot of players ahead of him, but, he wasn't really at his best all that long

I'm not scoffing- at least now- at Hamm's inclusion (and originally, it was more about when she was taken- with guys like Best, Eusebio, Garrincha still undrafted). I don't see comparing her, as I suggested in the sports draft, apples-to-apples to men.I wonder though- is she important world-wide, or just here in the US? Like I've said, she's a top 5 lock if we're just talking about US players... but we're not. And there are SOOOOO many incredible, game/history/influence-changing players (predominantly men) out there that were undrafted or taken after her. But I'll look more into her importance around the world before judging and am open to hearing more from our non-US posters. And again- Best, Eusebio and Garrincha taken at the end... those three are all in a select group of 3rd tier players, IMO, behind the obvious 1A/B and 2A/B.

Yeah, what the hell Charlie? He might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer. I guess being a part of a fatal accident wasn't enough.

Total domination by Germany over Turkey on Friday. (just watched the match on espn3)

Two goals by Klose and one by Özil. The game was played in Berlin which has a large Turkish population and Özil was booed every time he touched the ball. It was nice to see him get a goal.

Big 2-1 away win for AFC Wimbledon in Wales vs. Wrexham. Substitute Rashid Yussuff delivered a late winner.

With nearly 1/3 of the season done, the Real Dons are sitting in second place in the Conference, three points behind leader Crawley Town. Promotion to League 2 may not sound like much but it would be huge for a team that started at level nine of the English soccer pyramid in 2002.

Thinking about jumping on the AFC Wimbledon bandwagon. I may have already said that in this thread.

Pretty amazing progressionAs a fan of a team that's likely to move within a few years (Bills>hi), I'd like to see AFC Wimbledon do well. It's a shame that American sports don't work the same way, with the fans deciding to start a club that can move up the ranks.

It'll be an amazing sight when, someday, they have to play against MK Dons, whether in the league or cup. I assume they've never played, as of now?

Bentley, here are a few other English teams you can support:

Team 1. - best name ever?

Team 2. - farting + deodorant

Team 3. - these guys sound classy

Team 4. - part of the male anatomy?

ETA - not sure why these links don't work. They're all real.

Big 2-0 win for France vs Romania at Stade de France. The game was a lot tighter than the scoreline. Romania packed in their defense looking for a scoreless away result or a goal on the counter. Les Bleus had more success breaking Romania down in the second half but they finally scored on a 83rd min. counter of their own. France took it away in their own half and scored on a long pass and breakaway by Loic Remy of Marseilles. Remy looked to be offside on the play. Romania had to come out of their shell and gave up an extra time goal to Gourcuff after some sweet dribbling by Dmitri Payet of St. Etienne.

Albania and Belarus both drew yesterday so France is now top of their group.

Holy smokes. The Davies story just took a weird twist

Davies lied to officers about who was driving
Regardless, how can you not tell when you're driving in a car going 120 mph? You'd think a guy with as much experience in these situations as Davies does would be able to tell the difference between going 120 and, say, 75.
Ummm I don't think Charlie quite "gets" it."That's not possible for me to go 120 mph on the road after an accident and think everything will be fine," Davies said. "If a kid survives such a serious accident and then almost exactly a year later is driving at a reckless speed, it's like, 'This can't be serious.' ... If someone has a second chance like I do, to take advantage of something like that, it's not something I could do. I learned too much from the whole experience to let something like that happen."

Hey Charlie- guess what... you just let something like that happen.

WTF?! is he doing in a car going that fast? Maybe all that wrestling masks his true timidity... he's just too shy to say- "slow the #### down- I almost died in a car crash not even a year ago".

I would definitely include Roberto Baggio in the top 20 of all time. Ruud Gullit deserves a mention as well. But Baggio for sure.

Another frustrating US performance--inconsistent on defense on inefficient on offense. I didn't see the first 30 min. Hope they were awesome then.

Except for a couple of miscues, Holden looked pretty good. Edu and Gooch were probably above average for US central defense pairings. It was good to see Bradley go with 4-2-3-1 because I think that's the most effective use of the talent he has. But Altidore's poor finishing isn't what you need from a lone striker. He looks good fine until he inevitably loses possession or shoots off target.

very frustrating to see the US give up goals on 2 failed clearances. Jones was looking very good until he botched that distribution that led to the 2nd goal.

His ball that led to the first goal was pure class. It was something that that hack Ricardo Clarke couldn't even do on FIFA11.

Love seeing Edu play the ball out of the back. Of course, he got absolutely torched in the first half and was bailed out by Howard.

FCUM is a great story too:F.C. United of Manchester is a semi-professional English football club based in Bury near Manchester who currently play in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, the 7th tier of league football. The club was formed in 2005 by Manchester United supporters following Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover which led to hundreds of supporters defecting from the club. They are affectionately referred to as "The Red Rebels".

FC United's first three seasons were successful, winning promotion each time.[1] FC United entered at the tenth level of the English football league system (the second division of the North West Counties Football League) and they were confirmed as champions on 15 April 2006 and followed that up by being crowned as champions of Division 1 on 18 April 2007. The 2007-08 season saw them finish second in the Northern Premier League Division One North then gain promotion through the end of season play-offs.

During their first season (2005-06), they had the second-highest average attendance in English non-League football.[2] Attendances fell in the next two seasons and they were the 97th best supported club in 2007-08.[3] Their record attendance is 6,023 for a match against Great Harwood Town on 22 April 2006.

The team is managed by the former Macclesfield Town player Karl Marginson.

Thought Holden and Jones looked great- except for a couple of blunders that led to the goals. Both of them were working hard and always seemed to want/get the ball and be productive with it. Bradley turned the ball over too much for my liking and often looked the odd man out- but kept working when the other two seemed to fade a bit (or at least Jones seemed to fade).

Benny and Boca looked exposed all game- not sure if that was due to their poor play or good play of the Polish attackers down their wing.

Edu as CB? Hmmmm... needs to work on his positioning, but I like the idea of him back there. Makes for a more aggressive, offensive shape.

Gooch defended pretty well, but was killing me with his distribution- just give the ball to Edu/Jones/Bradley (although again, that could be due to decent Polish defending)

Cherundulo looked great, IMO- limited the Polish attack down his flank and got forward effectively. Typical, good game for him.

Dempsey was a tale of two halves. Thought he was terrible in the first, but had his swagger going in the 2nd, along with some great hustle. Thought most of the positive things that happened in the 2nd half started with him.

Jozy was not good. No real touch and continuously lost the ball. I like that he's determined to go at goal and I like that he got himself into good positions a couple of times, but not a good performance IMO despite the goal.

I liked this formation a lot and think it's going to suit the US players well, especially swapping LD in for Benny. I'm hoping we find some new blood at outside back- particularly the left (same as it ever was... same as it ever was) to better handle the responsibities of this formation.

I really thought Bradley had a terrible game. He ran around a lot but he seemed to not know his role. Actually I thought that a lot about everyone in the midfield. Holden was playing on the right side but he was never there, Benny was invisible, and Dempsey really was playing more as a withdrawn striker. It was announced as a 4-2-3-1 but if that was what they were really trying to play they just need more training time. It just seemed way too chaotic.

Given our normal distribution out of the back it was refreshing but he and Gooch left too much space between them over and over again. I don't see this as a long term partnership tbh but I guess we'll see.

He's just killing me. His potential is unreal but in real games, we have to score and he just doesn't.

Yeah, it needs some work so that people know their roles and keep their shape but it has quite a bit of potential.

anyone know if Jones is left footed?

He made a lot of nice left footed passes last night (including the assist)

Its a shame he wont be in his prime for 2014.

So, I'm going to the Dynamo/Revolution game this evening and need a little action on this one. Anyone have any leans towards how this game will play out?

The US needs to develop something outside of midfielders.

We started 4 solid midfielders

We started a midfielder at defense

We started a midfielder at withdrawn striker

Arguably the best US player ever who was not available is also a midfielder

strange spread of talent the US has at this moment in time.

Dynamo managed to get more straight red cards than goals in this one.Pretty decent experience for my first true mls game, especially considering it was two bottom feeding clubs, each without a number of their better players. I suppose Shari Joseph was the only player I recognized from the Revolution, and Davis, Ashe, Odouro and Onstad are the only guys from the Dynamo. Skill level was a bit higher than I expected. Number 20 on the Dynamo, Geoff Cameron was pretty solid out there. These guys were a lot taller than I expect too - I knew Joseph was a pretty big dude, but there must have been 10 guys out there taller than 6'1....and there were a few really short guys out there too.Oh well, maybe next year Dynamo

Yeah, that was pretty big news when they started it up, too. A great example of the supporters exercising their abilities to "change the game" so to speak.Wimbledon still has to be the best story, for me, though. Something so awesome about being able to start your own team after your team leaves.

Just watched the US/Poland game, although not as intently as I'd hoped. No individual-player analysis from me on this one, as I like to do.

Not sure what else there is to say that hasn't already been said - too inconsistent. Defensively, someone's gotta clear the ####### ball off their lines...yeesh. Jones made a pretty poor play on the second goal, but Gooch's "clearance" on the first goal was just dreadful....something that the team's #1 defender just shouldn't do. I know it was a tough ball to judge, but he just can't misplay the ball like that.

The over-the-top through ball from Jones on the first goal was a thing of beauty. I liked the workrate from Altidore, and it was good to see him go for the whole match without being noticeably gassed....but still, he's gotta capitalize on his chances. He had a clear 2-3 really good goal-scoring chances outside of his goal.

All in all, some good and some bad....I think Andy hit a good point, something that's painfully obvious to all of us serious fans....the US has a bunch of good midfielders and little else. That's not to say that Howard and Jozy aren't good, but the only position where the US has any depth is in the midfield.

Bottom line....there's a lot of work to be done if the USMNT wants to avenge the 2009 Gold Cup thrashing at the hands of the Mexicans....and there's a lot more to be done with an eye on 2014. Realistically, this is the best team that the US has ever fielded....and I know it was a meaningless game, but it sure would be nice to see them come out and smoke the other team when they're playing at home.

I'm looking forward to see what changes are in store tonight vs. Colombia. The Colombians should provide a challenge. They finished a point behind semifinalists Uruguay in CONMEBOL WC qualifications, conceding only a goal per game on average. Only Brazil and Paraguay had fewer goals against.

I haven't seen Colombia play but based on their record, it sounds like the US will have to take the initiative on offense and avoid being exposed on the counter. It's a tough assignment for the reshaped back four (Bocanegra is back in France, Gooch probably won't go 90), Bradley and Jones (or Rico Clark).

I don't expect a free flowing goal fest. 1-0 would be a very good result.

Cherundolo went back to Germany too. Looks like we may see Lichaj play. Is Spector in camp? I think Goodson is.More I thought abuot the Poland game, the happier I was- at least with Bradley's attempt at tinkering with the lineup based on players available. Not a great result or performance- very sloppy and uncertain in coverage in the back- but there were moments when you could see what a formation like that could do flowing forward... moments.

Looks like we may see a few new faces tonight in Shea and Lichaj. And floppo. to your question, from this article it sounds like Spector is in camp. I really didn't pay attention to see who got called. Btw, a couple of subtle jabs at MLS by Dempsey and Shea I thought.

I'd like to see us try out that 4-2-3-1 again with something like:

Jozy

Shea-Demps-Holden

Bradley-Jones

Lichaj-Goodson-Gooch-Spector

I know people want to see others but I do think it's important that some of the main guys get out there and get a feel for each other. Most especially, I'd like to see Bradley and Jones play together as much as possible. I wouldn't mind Edu in place of Gooch but that may be too green of a backline.
