Ted, looks like Philly is hosting this years MLS All Star Game. Press Conference tomorrow with Garber and the mayor. Any rumors on a possible opponent?
Nothing concrete and I dont think the opponent will be announced tomorrow. IIRC, the naming of last year's opponent came well after the announcement of RBA as the location. The Union BigSoccer board threw out possibilities of Liverpool, AC Milan and Man City, all of which are either confirmed to be touring the US this summer or rumored to be. If it was either of the three, I'd guess the game would be at the Linc vs PPLThough its a bad year to host it with Euro 2012 likely preventing the top players from participating.

The Euro 2012 Final is on July 1st. So the vast majority of the players will be finished at the end of June. The all star game last year was the end of July so that may be enough time to see some of the big name players come back to their teams if this year's game is also at the end of July. I have no idea what the date will be for the game this summer. I am assuming the date will be released tomorrow.

More rumors of Agudelo to the EPL, this time to Liverpool

After spending a fortnight on trial at the club, Juan Agudelo may soon be completing a move to the Premier League by signing with Liverpool.Agudelo is currently on the books at MLS side New York Red Bulls but would undoubtedly jump at the chance to move to the English top flight for the progress of his career. The 19 year-old made 29 appearances for the Red Bulls in 2011, scoring six goals in the process leading Liverpool to become interested in his signature.Agudelo is also a United States international and has featured in 15 games for The Stars and Stripes since making his debut in 2010.The forward is seen as somewhat of a rising star in North American football and it seems the Reds are looking to sign the youngster as offensive backup.Kenny Dalglish is suffering from a slight shortage of attackers up front with Luis Suarez currently sitting on the sidelines as part of an eight-match ban. With the Uruguayan’s suspension, the Anfield outfit only have Andy Carroll, Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt to use as natural strikers. The Merseysiders were already being rumoured to be in the market for a goalscorer and while his signature may not be the big name club supporters were hoping for, his meagre £2m price-tag may be of interest. After failing to topple relegation struggling Bolton over the weekend, it’s possible that Liverpool may be involved in a lot more transfer negotiations over the next week and a half, with Agudelo just one name fans could see on the teamsheet in February.

Agudelo is in no way ready to contribute to an EPL team, correct? Seems strange, I'd rather he go someplace where he can actually play.

Ugh - he needs games, not to rot on the bench. Hopefully Liverpool loans him out before the window closes.

Correct. He barely contributes at the MLS level. At best he is an average forward with some flashes. Floppo has commented on his lack of knowledge in terms of positioning and making runs when he has seen him play live. Unless he made some huge leap in progression in the offseason, this would be a terrible move outside of considering his bank account.

I know I've posted in the past about my Coed YMCA league team and how we are yearly cellar dwellers. Well, this season has been quite different and we play tonight for what could be all the marbles. We are Dazed and Confused and we play Black and Blue. All of the top 4 teams have two matches left. Our final match is next week against the last place team that has only one win. So, a victory tonight and things look good!

Because there are so few Colombians already in MLS :) They have to be the third largest amount of players now from any one country after the US and Canada.I guess you can't beat the talent for the price equation as the Colombian first division is an absolute mess in terms of finances right now with numerous players not being paid.

Colombian striker Lionard Pajoy is expected to make his foray into Major League Soccer as a member of the Union, a source told the Daily News.According to the source, a pesky contract situation with Pajoy's current club Itagui Ditaires, of the Colombian first division, has stalled his move to Philly. The source said the deal should be completed in the "next couple of days" once his P-1 visa and other paperwork are approved by the league. The news of Pajoy's possible arrival to MLS was first released by Colombian soccer website FutbolRed.com.Members of the Union's technical staff declined comment, the norm when there are rumblings of potential player signings. The source said that through tireless efforts of Union chief scout and development coordinator Diego Guiterrez, the Union was able to help Pajoy 30, realize a desire to continue his career in America. It's too early to say if Pajoy will become a replacement if forward Sebastien Le Toux, currently on trial with Bolton, receives an offer from the English club, but based on his body of work, Pajoy can pick up where Le Toux left off. He is the current leading scorer in Colombia's first division with 10 goals in 18 matches.Pajoy would certainly bring a wealth of experience to a young Union attack corps that features Danny Mwanga, Jack McInerney, Josue Martinez, signed this offseason and top SuperDraft pick Chandler Hoffman; four players all under the age of 25.

I'm thinking this means Le Toux to Bolton is done by the end of the week

Ted, there is one thing that confuses me with the player transfer rules in MLS. If the Union sell him for say 1 million as a round number, who keeps that money?I think, but not sure, that the league keeps the money and the Union are then given a certain amount of allocation money (usually a percentage of the sale).Do you know for sure either way?

I believe I read a normal player sale is 2/3 team, 1/3 league, and a homegrown player sale is a higher percentage for the team, either 70 or 75%, which is part of the incentive for teams to invest in academies.I think you're correct about the cash vs allocation money but I'm not 100% sure.

Now that you said that it makes sense. The team does keep some of the money but it doesn't go towards the salary cap. It is a pretty good system.I don't think a home grown player has been sold yet (probably too new a system). Not sure if Agudelo counts as home grown or not.

re Torres - yes, PSG has a strong bid out for him, and I think he's lost his confidence completely. I also think there would be a ton of pressure returning to Spain - and he has even lost favor on the national side, I just think going to CL level French side would be a good move for him, a fresh start.

re Bale - I think he ends up in Barcelona or RM in 2013 or so. And Spurs have a nice side, but they do not have an elite side, nor do I think they can compete with the big boys. I don't know why you think they are going to spend money, I just don't think they will. And don't count on Harry being around for long. I can see him jumping ship for the England job if offered.

One other thing to keep an eye out on, I am hearing chirps that Hulk may be on the move. He has a ridiculous buy out clause, and it may not happen this transfer window, but maybe in the summer. I think he moves before Neymar.
I think the deal moving Neymar to RM is nearly done. Moving Bale to Barca or RM is nothing but pure speculation IMO. Spurs have every reason to make him one of the highest paid players in the EPL. Explosive, match winning players that play for a British side don't grow on trees. Spurs should make CL this year and the $ commensurate with that. I have a feeling that the Spurs management can convince them to try and make a challenge to United for the second best team in the EPL in 2012-13 season (City IMO are simply #1 in talent right now). Even if Redknapp leaves, I think they can bring in a name that would make the players happy.Furthermore, Barca isn't the right fit for Bale for a lot of reasons, namely there's no need for him in their side in the next 2-3 years. RM is a better fit since his streaky wing play would fit with the technical, speedy counter attack that they have going right now. CRonaldo would be a good role model for him to emulate (taking on multiple players, able to score from nearly anywhere with exceptional range, leading a counter attack from the wing, tracking back and making good tackles to break up an opposing counter, and generally instilling fear in the other team's wing backs and defensive midfielders). But RM already has CR7, and the addition of Bale wouldn't be worth it IMO.
I can't see Barca shelling out for Bale when they develop so much offensive talent on their own. I personally think he looks for his own shot a bit too much.I've heard lots of Neymar rumors, I don't think anything's going to be settled until 2014. Barca and RM do seem to be the presumptive favorites, but either team committing to something now just seems crazy.

I don't know if the Mourinho flap has been mentioned here, but, wow: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/jan/23/jose-mourinho-arsene-wenger-madrid-arsenal "You've never been a player...", being whistled at home, tough times for the Special One.

Agudelo is in no way ready to contribute to an EPL team, correct? Seems strange, I'd rather he go someplace where he can actually play.
:goodposting: If he's not going to learn these things from two very good pros in Henry and Rogers (although Rogers sounds like he's done in MLS due to visa issues), he's not going to learn them on the reserve side at Liverpool. He needs another year or two of maturation getting to actually play before he's ready for the jump... pretty much like Dempsey did. 4 years in MLS for Deuce? 5? And Dempsey was playing regular minutes too.

If Rogers really is forced out, Agudelo will be up against Cooper for the other starting spot... and so far from what I've seen of how Henry pairs up- Cooper is the better fit. Again- if you watched RedStar games this year, it was really clear through body and facial language how annoyed Henry would get with Agudelo; lack of correct runs and poor decision making on the ball getting his teammates involved. With the ball at feet in front of goal, Juan is something special- he just needs to up the rest of his game.

Good posting! I guess with the Rogers and Agudelo situation, the trade for Cooper makes more sense.Dempsey actually only played 3 years for the Revs but he played a ton of minutes in those 3 years. He was a little older than Agudelo was though when he left.

If Agudelo leaves, it smacks of following the same path that Jozy did where he is likely to bounce from team to team with little to no hope of playing for a few years.

Ih- yeah, Juan = Jozy is a good call. Thing is, IMO Jozy was further along in his development as a player than Agudelo currently is;. Jozy was more soccer smart, Imo.

And yeah- that Cooper trade makes a lot more sense given Juan and Rogers' potential departures. As does the signing of that Swede to fill Ream's spot.

I really hope that Ream and Agudelo can get minutes if they leave... Both are young and woud be playing next to all-world players (Hebry and Marquez) if the stayed with the Reds- regular minutes and polished pros to learn from seems better than just practicing against good players.

Speaking of Ream, it sounds like the Bolton deal is near complete. It is expected to be for $3 million which would be the largest transfer fee ever for a MLS defender.

I am glad the All Star game is at PPL Park instead of Lincoln. Ted, will this game be a stand alone or part of season ticket packages? I am thinking it will be a stand alone game but I am unsure. The day after this game is the qualifying for the Olympics so any players who are on the Olympic team obviously won't play in this game.

Major League Soccer announced today that Philadelphia will be the host city for the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game. The annual showcase event will feature three days of festivities, culminating in a match between the League’s top players and a renowned international club on July 25 at Chester, Pa,’s PPL Park, home of the Philadelphia Union and its boisterous supporters, the Sons of Ben.The 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2, Galavision or Telefutura and in Canada on TSN and RDS. ESPN International will make the game available live in more than 100 countries. In addition, the All-Star Game will be carried online and on smartphones and tablets via ESPN3 and WatchESPN in the United States.

This is a bit disappointing. I was hoping the live game would draw better than the taped delayed games but that was not the case as the time slot was obviously very important as was the NFL tie in. No real impetus for Fox to show many live games next year if this trend continues.

(AP) NEW YORK — Manchester United's 2-1 win over Arsenal, the first U.S. live telecast of the Premier League on an over-the-air network, got a 0.9 overnight rating on Fox.The game, which started at 11 a.m. EST Sunday, received a lower rating than three delayed telecasts of EPL matches earlier this season that averaged a 1.3 rating, Fox said Monday. The earlier broadcasts preceded or followed NFL games.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead we lost the match to Black and Blue 5-3. The 3rd and 4th place teams drew against each other the next night. As it stands if we win Thursday night we'll finish in 2nd. Not bad at all.

some good cup games today - tomorrow BIG cup games

DelPiero with a cracker, gave Juve 2-0 lead and they won 3-0

Cardiff/Crystal Palace playing an awesome game - going to pk's now. Come on Cardiff. Winner plays winner of City/Pool tomorrow

It's definitely not part of the season ticket package, though STHs will apparently have access to a pre-sale. And I'll bet the tix will be crazy expensive. Haven't decided if I'm going to shell out for this or not. Hope they announce the opponent before putting the tix on sale.

Tweeter reporting LFC have signed Joao Carlos Teixeira from Sporting and Moussa Sow from Lille
:giggty:
I believe Lille and Fenerbache have already agreed to a 13M fee for Sow. The idea that Lille have backed out of that, agreed to a fee with Liverpool, Sow has left the Africa Cup of Nations for his physical, passed the physical, and signed (all in one day) seems a bit optimistic.I'm not sure what they would do with Sow anyway.

You're correct on the first part. I misread the tweet :bag:

Teixeira would be a good future partner for Suarez, but he's not going to fill their current needs for a goalscorer. I actually can't put my finger on exactly what Liverpool needs to be honest. They really seem to have the personnel it's just that they are all underperforming and can't gel. It must be incredibly frustrating as a fan. They spent a ton of money and they don't have the endless pockets of a City or Chelsea so they are probably pretty limited on what they can do right now.Ironically, I think Torres and Suarez would have been awesome together. Too bad you can't swap Downing and Carrol back for Torres.

Suarez/Torres would have been insane I think. They need speed imo. You saw what a little speed did for them when Bellamy's old legs got behind a Bolton defender when Carroll flicked the ball behind him(the defender). Downing has some, but he's just not up to snuff for Liverpool. Henderson needs to play in the middle. Adam is Adam...technical guy with beautiful passes and -0- pace. Ditch Adam and Downing. Admit defeat and get some speed on the wings. Carroll and Henderson i can live with because they're both 22ish IIRC. I've mentioned it here before that there was a cry to get rid of Lucas a few years ago and now he's a top EPL holding mid. I like the fact that Henderson is getting run out there. It might be ugly at times, but he'll benefit from all the time he's getting.

fwiw, USWNT avenged its WCQ loss to Mexico with a 4-0 win in Olympic Qual, winning their group while scoring 31 goals in 3 games. They play CR Friday for a spot in the Olympics.

USMNT in action tonight AT Panama- first ever friendly there. Is this on gringo-tube, or just Gala?

and :goodposting: about Suarez and Torres being a scary partnering, especially w Kuyt running off them.

Wait- so Pepe got a pass on his stomp, but Balotelli gets 4 games for his?
Not only did he get a pass, he is included in the squad for today. The Spanish Federation is a joke where discipline is concerned.
This won't end well today.
Probably not. Mourinho is under big pressure from the Madrid press and fans right now. Hopefully Barcelona makes it through, but Real is going to be out for blood.

Here is the latest news/rumors on Ream and Le Toux

Bolton are poised to announce their first signing of the transfer window today – but the race for more fresh faces is likely to go right down to the wire.US international Tim Ream will finally be confirmed as a Bolton player this afternoon after being granted a work permit, which left him free to complete his £2million move from New York Red Bulls. The 24-year-old defender is unlikely to be available for this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Swansea City as he ties up some loose ends over in the States.
Sebastien Le Toux has completed a trial at Bolton and returned to his club, Philadelphia Union, in the United States.Le Toux flew to England to train with Wanderers last week and was spotted in the stands during the club's 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday evening. The 28-year-old has since returned to Philadelphia, although the reasons why remain unknown.Trotters boss Owen Coyle may have decided to pull the plug on a deal, but Le Toux may have returned to America while the two clubs continue to discuss a transfer.

Prolly E3 too.

Another Colombian signed today with MLS. It is becoming clear that the league is over-targeting that countries talent, likely due to the financial problems in the Colombia first division.Beyond this, Portland is said to be close to signing its fifth Colombian player soon.

Commerce City, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids today welcomed the newest addition to the team in Colombian midfielder Jaime Castrillon. The former Independiente Medellin and national team attacking midfielder will join his new Rapids teammates for two training sessions today at ****'s Sporting Goods Park.

What a total ####### joke. Hope Mashcerano and Alves rip his throat out with their cleats.

Did that Barça ####-slobberer just say, "go down like a big girl's blouse" in reference to Pepe falling down from a light touch from Puyol and Piqúe? What a fool.
