HOLD UP IN PLAYYou are not going to believe this, but some idiot fan has come on to the pitch and has handcuffed himself around Joe Hart's left-hand upright. Will they saw his arm off? We hope so. :lmao:
This was the hardest I have laughed ever during a game. Even the announcers were flabbergasted. :D

Didn't realize that Everton has won now 7 of last 10 against Man City. Still wasn't expecting the win though. Glad to see Howard with the blank sheet and apparently Stracqualursi was all over the place, probably trying to secure some playing time after Jelavic shows up.

Any striker Everton plays should just have "NotSaha" on the back of his jersey. BTW, Saha to Spurs is a complete WTF for me.

Interesting developments today
I was kinda surprised Carroll scored, too.
Carroll's actually seemed to have found a little something with Bellamy and Kuyt. It sounds crazy to say it, but I'm not sure getting Suarez back will be best for them. They were just beginning to understand how to play together upfront.
90% of it is Carroll, imoHe's winning more headers and he's not just looking to head it, he's bringing it down with his chest. Also, he isn't afraid to touch the ball more than once anymore.I see them getting Suarez on the left side of Carroll and a rotation of Bellamy/Kuyt on the right.

Charles Renken to Portland Timbers

Aston Villa deal for Tevez apparently filed 30 seconds too late, according to AV's unofficial twitter feed :lmao:

Fantastic little pick up for Portland! I have loved what little I have seen of Renken. That is much too funny about Villa :) And sadly, that may work out for them. God knows how long before Tevez was going to screw up again.

I'm excited to see Renken play in MLS. I'm pretty sure that Aston Villa thing was a joke though. They announced that Tevez was signed, and then announced 5 minutes later that that paperwork was filed too late.

Sounds like no teams outside of Portland thought enough of Renken to even try to give up their allocation slot. From Ives
As for how Portland was able to acquire Renken, all other MLS teams passed on the chance to sign him, thus negating the need for the allocation or lottery process, sources told SBI. The past precedent for U.S. youth internationals coming to MLS from clubs abroad has been to put them through the allocation order. So why did 18 teams pass on Renken? It depends on the teams, but you had some teams that were scared off by his injury history, some teams that didn't want to give up their place in the MLS Allocation Order (which is determined by last year's record and determines who has first crack at U.S. national team players who return to MLS). There is also the fact that several teams already have stockpiles of young talentExceptions to that rule include players who have been previously offered Generation adidas deals only to turn them down and head overseas (like Lee Nguyen), who are then put in a weighted lottery. Other exceptions include players who have played in lower-tier leagues in America. While Renken falls into none of those categories, it seems that Portland was the only team willing to take a chance on the Zambia-born U.S. prospect.

Looks like our guess of the tie between Le Toux and Torres was correct.

Nowak explains why Union let go of Le Toux, Mondragon

January 31, 2012

In the span of 24 hours, the Philadelphia Union parted ways with the only two all-stars in franchise history – captain Faryd Mondragón and leading scorer Sébastien Le Toux.

So in the wake of those surprising moves, the question for Union manager Peter Nowak was a simple one: Why?

The answer could also be summed up simply: because of the future.

In a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Nowak discussed how trading Le Toux to Vancouver for allocation money – while the veteran’s pricetag was high – will free up money to reinvest in the franchise and lock up the team’s brightest young stars.

One of those young stars is Roger Torres, who will remain with the club for the foreseeable future after the Union announced Tuesday they had completed a transfer for the 20-year-old playmaker from Colombian side América de Cali.

Nowak also indicated the club is planning to improve and extend the contracts of youngsters like 21-year-old fullback Sheanon Williams and said the idea that they are shopping 20-year-old striker Danny Mwanga, who’s currently training with Aston Villa, is “completely false.”

“To build a club, it’s all about the future,” Nowak said, noting the Le Toux trade was directly related to the Torres transfer. “It’s not about one player. It’s about the future. We feel very strongly about that.”

While releasing Mondragón so he could play for the Colombian club Deportivo Cali was at the goalkeeper’s request – “Of course we were surprised, but he expressed his wish and we granted his wish,” Nowak said – it appears Le Toux did not want to leave Philly, where he had become a fan favorite and the face of the franchise.

The star Frenchman, who had 25 goals and 20 assists for the Union in the club’s first two seasons, tweeted that it was the “saddest day” for him earlier on Tuesday. Nowak admitted it’s never easy to part with a player, especially one as talented as Le Toux, but also noted that “feelings are not included in my job description.”

“It’s more important for me to see the overall picture and see how pieces fall into place and what kind of philosophy and vision we have as a team,” said Nowak, adding that the Whitecaps made a “very strong approach” after it was made public that the deal with Bolton – where Le Toux had been on trial – would not go through.

The exits of the 40-year-old Mondragón and the 28-year-old Le Toux make a young team even younger, with defender Danny Califf and midfielder Brian Carroll emerging as the only remaining MLS veterans on the roster. But Nowak believes the leadership both Mondragón and Le Toux provided will “stay with the group forever.”

“The last couple of years, Sébastien and Faryd gave the group a lot of confidence,” Nowak said. “They gave them faith, gave them the mentality of how to win games and how to be true professionals.”

There are, however, still many lingering questions as to how the Union will cope without those two players. Which of the young strikers will help fill the major scoring void left by Le Toux? How will the 20-year-old Zac MacMath handle the starting goalkeeper responsibilities in his second year in the league and who will back him up? Will any of the team’s newcomers become a vocal leader like Mondragón did last year?

Those questions will likely begin to be answered as the preseason progresses. For now, Nowak only asks for trust that putting faith in the young core is the right thing to do and the only way to create a “sustainable, competitive advantage” in the years to come.

“Let them play the games and then we can judge from that,” Nowak said. “It’s unfair to the guys in the locker room to say this group is inexperienced.”

I heard it said that he was "missing out on millions of dollars". Is that in reference to a cut of his transfer fee, a sign-on bonus, or missed salary from $ity?

Read that he was getting fined and salary withheld. IIRC, it was in the £9M area

I wonder what the real story is here....

Ingolstadt terminates Buddle's contract

Edson Buddle's European venture has come to a screeching halt.

Despite Buddle scoring six goals for FC Ingolstadt this season, the club released him from his contract Tuesday for unspecified reasons. Buddle had been sent away from the team prior to the 2. Bundesliga's winter break, the first indication that his time in Germany may have been coming to a premature close.

What's next for Buddle remains to be seen. He had trained with West Ham and was on trial with Everton, but neither of those stints amounted to transfers. He was also reportedly on trial with relegation-threatened Westerlo in Belgium, but nothing came of it. Because he is out of contract, he should be still be eligible to sign with clubs in Europe outside of the transfer window, so Tuesday's deadline is not a deal-breaker for any potential move abroad.

It should be noted that when Buddle left the Los Angeles Galaxy following the 2010 MLS season, it was on a free transfer, meaning that the Galaxy were not given a fee for him and that the club should retain his MLS rights, should he return to the league.

When Buddle left the Galaxy a little more than a year ago, he said in a team statement that "I am hopeful that one day I will be able to return to the Galaxy and help lead them to an MLS Cup championship."

It is possible that return may be coming sooner than he initially imagined.

Nice re-sign by NY. Easily one of the most underrated players in the league IMO

HARRISON, N.J. -- Midfielder Joel Lindpere has signed a new multi-year contract with the New York Red Bulls. The MLS team announced the signing on Tuesday.Lindpere was the team's 2010 most valuable player. He started a franchise-record 34 regular season games this past season, a franchise record.Red Bulls general manager Erik Soler said the team wanted to reward Lindpere to recognize his efforts.Lindpere had played in Norway before joining the Red Bulls in March 2010. He led the team with six assists in his first season, and had seven goals and seven assists this past season.

Great news.Lindpere is without doubt the engine of everything positive this team does. He's got good skills, vision and mostly heart/engine; the guy goes all out every game- a true professional. IMO, he and Tainio are irreplaceable... at least by those currently on the roster.I'm cautiously optimistic about what this team can do this year, especially if the new guys on the back line can hold shape through the middle and win the dead-balls defensively (both areas the StarsREds killed themselves last season).

Was just wondering what happened with him...

American midfielder Mixx Diskerud has been loaned from Norway's Stabaek to Belgium's Ghent. The 21-year-old played for Norway's youth national teams before making his senior U.S. national team debut in November 2010. He has been part of the American Under-23 training camps ahead of qualifying for the London Olympics.Diskerud, whose mother is from Arizona, had been with Stabaek since 2008.Ghent has an option to purchase Diskerud's rights.Copyright 2012 Associated Press.

Yikes that did not take long.

Buddle has signed with LA.

Holy smokes, Keane, Buddle, Becks and Landon are going to have a field day offensively. Shame that Gonzo blew out his knee, they might have had a very legit shot at being the first MLS team to win the CCL.

That's gotta be a lot of loot put out for those four.
Landon, Becks and Keane are all DP's and probably make about $14m combined. Buddle, by definition, can not be a DP so his salary is some what limited. With out knowing how much allocation money they put towards his salary, I am roughly guessing he makes between 300k-400kish.

Since the board went down, NE signed yet another Colombian and Philly traded another player with no player coming in return (Nakazawa got sent to LA).

DC signed a DP today named Hamdi Salihi, an Albanian International. I have never seen him play but his strike rate is amazing. 163 goals in 289 pro matches, mostly in Greece and Austria.

Lost wages, fines, etc. from city. I think it's over 9M at this point.

Did Gio Dos Santos get loaned again or is he just going to disintegrate on the Spurs bench?
He turned down a transfer to the US and Russia to sit on the Spurs' bench. I'm beginning to think he's just lazy.
I read that. How much say does the player vs the team have in terms of accepting a transfer? Is it based on what his contract stipulates?

Pretty sure they have to sign a new contract with the team they're going to. It's within their rights to say no.

I wondered the same about Carlos Vela (though I haven't see him play too much of late). Amazing that the two of them are each just 22....seems they've been around forever.
I've actually seen more of Jonathan Dos Santos for Barca than Gio for Spurs. But damn- that u17 WC champion mexico side was pretty amazing. That said- I'm happy to see these guys rotting away on benches around the world... anything that could possibly help the USMNT is a plus IMO... and they'll need all the help they can get against Mexico for at least 2 more WC cycles.

Vela isn't quite rotting away on a bench somewhere, he seems to be getting regular PT on loan from Arsenal at Real Sociedad (17 league appearances/2 goals, 19 total appearances) this season, but I agree with you on the rest of the point re: USMNT. Given Arsenal's moves for Gervinho and Alex Chamberlain in the last several months, it looks to me like Vela will have a tough time cracking the starting squad with any real consistency even when (if?) he returns from loan. I like Vela, I think he's a fairly talented player, it just never clicked with him for Arsenal...he'd probably be better off elsewhere

Oh- ok. TO be honest, I actually never thought that much of Vela. Good player, yeah- but not all that. Gio, on the other hand- amazing. And that Chamberlain cat... whoa- and only 18?

I was wondering if Bradley Sr had anything to say, or was even in Egypt for that horrible tragedy. From the Washington Post..

Egypt’s American soccer coach Bob Bradley describes ‘sadness’ in wake of stadium tragedyBy Steven GoffBob Bradley, the American coach of Egypt’s national soccer team, watched the first half of Al-Masry’s ill-fated match against Al-Ahly on TV Wednesday before driving to Cairo’s international stadium to attend the Zamalek-Ismaily game later in the day. En route to the venue, he and his Egyptian colleagues listened to radio coverage.Zamalek and Al Ahly are bitter city rivals, so when Bradley arrived, many Zamalek supporters were gathered in the lobby watching the final moments of Al-Ahly’s 3-1 defeat in Port Said unfold on TVs. Bradley saw the last goal and then the postgame commotion before taking his seat.At the time, there was no way of knowing the magnitude of the tragedy. But by halftime of the Zamalek game, reports began to arrive at the stadium about the violence and loss of life: more than 70 dead and 260 injured. The Zamalek match was promptly postponed.Much more.....“We spent the greater part of the night watching the coverage extensively, receiving reports and trying to comprehend what had happened,” Bradley said in a phone interview with the Insider on Thursday.“Today was a day of sadness, sadness for the country and sadness for Egyptian football,” said Bradley, a former University of Virginia and D.C. United assistant who coached the U.S. national team for 4 ½ years and guided the Americans to the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup. He was hired by Egypt last fall.Bradley, 53, lives in Cairo with his wife Lindsay. Their son Michael, 24, is a U.S. national team midfielder playing for Italian Serie A club Chievo.Bradley declined to reflect personally on the situation and what it’s like for a high-profile American to live and work in a volatile political climate. In the past, though, he has said Egyptians have been kind-hearted and welcoming since his arrival. And on Thursday he marched with Egyptians at a rally protesting violence and supporting the victims. “When a tragedy like this occurs,” he said, “it’s important to show respect.”“First and foremost, we think about the families,” he added. “And now all sorts of questions come up because there’s more to the situation. For the most part, everyone sees this as more than just fan violence at a football match.”Egypt’s most passionate fan groups, the Ultras, were instrumental in last year’s revolution, and in the wake of the stadium horror, many are blaming the military for instigating the violence. In regard to how this incident will affect soccer in Egypt and the national team, Bradley said: “In the moment, there are questions about what will happen with the league and decisions will be made: Will it continue? Will it be cancelled? Will they play with no fans in the stadium? All of these things would clearly impact the situation for the national team.”Clubs in the domestic league employs almost all of the talent in the Egyptian national team player pool.Bradley is scheduled to open a training camp Feb. 15, with the possibility of friendlies ahead of a 2013 African Cup of Nations away qualifier against the Central African Republic on Feb. 29. Qualifying for the 2014 World Cup begins June 1 in Cairo against Mozambique.“We’ll wait to see what develops, what direction this takes.”

Here are the lists for the hall of fame. I am guessing Meola and Reyna get in with not too much difficulty. Garber is damn close but seeing what he has done with MLS since he joined, he has to be given serious consideration.

Yeah- those three, and probably DiCicco.

Nowak, Vermes, Joe Max Moore, Burns, Sorber, Kreis... all right behind, IMO.

How does the Hall normally rate/include foreigners? I mean, Valderamma was a huge deal those first couple of years of MLS and definitely helped the league's stature/image. And guys like Diaz Arce and Etcheverry were important pros too.

I have the same question myself. I don't know what the parameters are for the foreigners who played in MLS.

Jose Adolfo Valencia, Portland's 20 year old DP from Colombia (where else?), will undergo knee surgery and be out 6-12 months. His deal is being reworked such that he will no longer count as a DP for this season.

Bundesliga bracing for arctic temperaturesWith temperatures set to dip to well below freezing in Germany at the weekend, the country's professional footballers and fans alike are bracing themselves for arctic conditions in this weekend's Bundesliga fixtures. A cold front is sweeping across Europe and daytime temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius and below are forecast from Thursday to Sunday in some parts of Germany....Likewise, league leaders Bayern Munich are at Hamburg on Saturday night, with forecasted temperatures of minus seven in the north German city.

Anyone who captained Van Persie today in the fantasy league is going to skyrocket up the charts. He had the best day of the season for any player with 3 goals and 2 assists in Arsenals 7-1 mauling of Blackburn. Henry came on as a sub and scored as well.

I was looking at the fire Fred standings and quite a few teams at the top captained Van Persie, so it's more a blow to the few that did not

yup, that would be me. :( I could easily drop from 3rd to maybe 6th or 7th unless Aguero wakes up and has a decent game.
