Feels like he fell off the side of planet. It has only been a couple years since he retired and I swear this is the first time I have seen his name mentioned.I feel like Mathis is linked to Wynalda and Dempsey as three US players who danced to their own drummer. Wynalda's less than stable mental side cost him some serious money in Germany, pissing off nearly everyone he could find in charge. Mathis was a little more stable than Wynalda but still had too much wild child in him for Europe, but this kid was extremely gifted for an American born player produced out of college. Dempsey got his wild side under control in MLS. Most people don't give Stevie Nicol enough credit for channeling Dempsey's wild attitude into a killer instinct on the field.

What was the game that Casey basically fell over the ball, won a free kick that we scored on, which gave the US an important win in qualifying? I think it was some where in Central America.

ok found it. He had a better game than I remembered!US in Honduras as part of the final round of qualifying for 2010.

US losing 1-0 at half.

Casey scores two in the second half and then draws a foul in which Landon buried a free kick to put US up 3-1.

Honduras pulls one back late to make it 3-2 and then in the last few minutes they drew a pk in which they promptly skied over the Howard's net.

If memory serves the US qualified for the WC based on that result leading up to the Bornstein dagger into Costa Rica's heart in the last game.

Hey, we qualified with Hejduk, Casey and Bornstein last time, that should make me feel better about this go around right? :unsure: :unsure:

Actually, he'll only play part of the first half before he gets yanked.Props to Bob for admitting he ####ed up that one and making the move that needed to be made. Mancini could learn a thing or two about that :whistle:
 
Amidst all the same-old, same-old that money brings to the top leagues, it was nice to read that a 3rd tier team made it to the Coup de France final against Lyon.

I just saw CR's two stunning goals from yesterday. I don't follow the Liga much, but have to think he's a favorite over Messi for player of the year based on what I've seen.

1) Realistically, it'll probably depend on who wins La Liga. Ronaldo's been great this year, but Messi's been just as good. And both have had some off games/mini-slumps, but they're both still pretty amazing.2) :homer: -wise, I think Messi contributes a lot more defensively and has had a better year. Barca's pressing up high is a lot more valuable than just sulking as you walk back after possession is lost.

I'm not sure anyone thinks he would be. He'd still get a decent amount of games though, and at this point in his career it doesn't matter as much if he sits some. It's a lot different than a young guy riding pine. I do wonder why the allure of playing in the champions league is so strong considering he probably wouldn't see the field if his team made the final. Does a squad player for Arsenal make more than one of Fulham's best players?

I do not think he would be a first-choice starter for Arsenal on Arsenal's current team. He'd get minutes, though, like Moe said.
 
This is nice. After Ben Arfa's run last weekend Soccernet put together a First XI of 50+ yard runs ending with a goal. I saw a few of these live and had seen some of others on video, but some were also new to me.

Would prefer to see him get starters minutes at least to the run up to 2014. No idea about the $$ though - is it that much more to be the 15th man in the squad for Arsenal vs. a star at Fulham?

I don't think it is all about money for Dempsey at this point. He is single minded in his hope to play at least once in the Champions League if he is true to his word. And if it is even close to $16m, it is going to be hard for Fulham to turn down especially for a player who be 30 during the next EPL season.

I put more weight on Champions League than La Liga. Ronaldo is the met dangerous layer in the world with the ball at his feet. Messi is the best player in the world. I was thinking about this yesterday: What would Man U and what would Ronaldo look like right now if he stayed there? I don't mean that rhetorically. Honestly curious.
 
Has Pele always been such an egotistical blowhard, or is he just that afraid of losing GOAT status to Messi? He seems to blast Messi at every turn and just said that Neymar is better than Messi right now. How can we take this guy seriously?

That happened right in my line of view from the 2nd level of the stadium. I was so angry. Koller destroyed the US in that game.

Didn't watch the video, but you need to check out some of Neymar's runs this year. Dude has incredible balance and ball control, plus a top gear that can blow past defenders. He'll be playing in la liga or Serie A next year and will be a top 3 goalscorer in either league.
 
Joe Gyau has been with Hoffenheim for a while now (more than a year I think) and he just tweeted today that he signed his first professional contract with them. What does that mean?

I know he has not yet played for the senior team but I am pretty sure he has been on the game day roster a couple of times.

I think he said he doesn't want to leave Brazil until after the World Cup. Though I'm sure hundreds of millions of Euros can change that.

Re: Dempsey... thought this seemed exceptionally logical as far as Internet speculation goes:

The £10 million question is which of the top teams are going to be willing to bring him in and give him enough playing time to make the move beneficial for both parties. ... Arsenal has been thrown out as a possible destination, but his age and nationality go against the type of players that Arsene Wenger usually brings in. Personally I think that he would be a good fit for Tottenham. The strike force at Spurs is flimsy and will get worse after the season when Emmanuel Adebayor once again returns to Manchester City. Dempsey would be a welcome addition because of his versatility and would certainly be a cheaper option than Adebayor. If Spurs can hold off Newcastle and Chelsea for the final Champions League spot then I would almost certainly expect them to make a run at Dempsey. Newcastle would also be a dark horse for to acquire him as well, especially since they will secure European football this season. But I’ll stick with the safe route and say he ends up playing at White Hart Lane next season.

Dempsey just isn't the kind of player Wenger pays for. And Spurs really would make sense if they finish 4th and Adebayor leaves. Especially since Dempsey is a player that I can see Redknapp buying.

I can't think Barcelona's staff was very impressed with Neymar given his disappearing act against them in December.

I don't think Barcelona can afford to sign him and probably shouldn't given significant recent investments in Cesc, Villa, and Sanchez upfront. If they are worried about Neymar in Madrid the best bet is to sign a top CB like Thiago Silva.

If Neymar stays until after the World Cup the timing would be pretty good for him to replace Villa.
 
I think Villa's gone as soon as he can prove he's healthy from his injury. It's not like they've missed him much the last couple months, and he just doesn't have the same timing as everyone else.
