Well, I grew up where it's called football and I call it soccer. I'm certainly not going to go around referring to football as American football.One of my pet peeves with soccer culture in the US is the random adoption of foreign soccerisms--for lack of a better term.

Pitch? Kit? DC United? Real Salt Lake? Sporting KC? FC Dallas? C.D. Chivas USA? Olé? Olé? Olé? :yucky:

Agreed, but still a humorous pic.We're all a little guilty of the latter though. I'm sure you've said "in form", or "get a result", or some other thing I can't think of that you wouldn't use when talking about an baseball or whatever.

Maybe we should just adopt it all for the rest of our sports. I know if Mendenhal doesn't find his form after injury my dynasty team is gong to be in trouble. He really needs to crack the Steelers starting XI or I'm hosed.

Yeah that cracks me up as well. If you're going to use non-US terms like pitch, kit, howler, etc, you may as well go all the way and adopt a British accent too. What makes the word pitch even more silly is that it's a term that originated from the game of cricket. Mate that Calamity James clown is a dead set howler merchant on the pitch in his old gent side part 'n keeper kit!

This seems such an odd thing to ##### about. Almost every sport has words we associate with it that we don't with other sports. I also play on a team of foreigners and everyone uses different terms for similar things (most are native english speakers from around the world). I've never seen anyone get upset by the use of alternative vocabulary though like seems to happen in this thread once a year or so. Find it really odd that anyone would care. Synonyms are a pretty normal part of everyday life. Not a big deal.

 
Oddly enough a majority of the English speaking world actually calls it soccer. Also, one thing I've never understood, fut and bol are not the spanish words for foot and ball, correct? So is futbol just a phonetic translation of the english word?

 
Just thinking about that 2009 semi final game at the Bridge makes my blood ####ing boil. I already have horrific visions of the blaugrana histrioncs we'll witness today. This makes no sense. The kickoff is an hour away and I'm already furious.

Think how I feel having to watch this knowing one of the two teams is guaranteed a place in the final.
 
So I know this will get skipped due to all the CL excitement and the MLS lack of excitement... but Andy posted a link to Marquez behaving like... well... Marquez against the Quakes (tackling Salinas on a corner kick, and then kicking him while down).Well- that tackle broke Salinas's collar bone.From ESPN

It was by no means the only exasperating aspect of the incident itself. Marquez had done much the same thing on two previous corner kicks, which Salinas stated went well above the kind of close marking that usually happens on set pieces. Both the player and the Quakes' bench had complained to referee Ricardo Salazar, but according to Salinas, the referee said nothing to Marquez."I feel like if someone had just said to Marquez, 'Hey, we're watching you,' maybe this could have been prevented," said Salinas. "Nothing was said, and on the third corner kick I have a broken collarbone.

I really hope this leads to a long, long suspension and a quick exit from RBNY. Time to put an end to this failed experiement; lazy, uncaring and dirty are not exactly the characteristics I'd want for my team.

Yeah, I mentioned in my first post that he broke his clavicle, not sure if that is different from his collar bone. So dirty.The league is expected to hand down the punishment sometime today. Even coaches of other teams are speaking out on this. Jason Kries told the media it is impossible to think 4 different refs missed this during the run of play that was right in front of them (this was not something that happened way behind the ball).Here is a link to the vid in case people missed it.http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=305522&view=findpost&p=14293076

I think Drogba will do well, but I don't see how that defense holds Barca to fewer than two goals. I think a draw would be a small miracle for Chelsea.This is pretty much the same Chelsea lineup that played over the weekend. It will be interesting to see how much gas they have in the tank come around the 60-70 minute mark.

Iniesta absolutely destroys Cahill and somehow Cahill gets away with literally tackling him in the box.

Ugh, Cahill again. I can't believe Chelsea pays him as much as Arsenal pays RVP. He's basically Luiz with less ball skills.

Messi's ability to stay on the ball is just amazing. I know this is stating the obvious, but holy ####. You see these close-ups where he is getting fouled left and right and from a normal view he looks like he's just gliding, you wouldn't even know. It's like he physically can't stumble.

Barcelona are going to need every last inch of their slightly bigger home field to try and break down the 10 men behind the ball defense of Chelsea.

 
I'm bummed that I got so stacked up with work that I didn't get a chance to watch games yesterday or today. :kicksrock:

He didn't disappoint. I thought he'd get 'lucky' on a long ball or two but I didn't expect Chelsea to post a clean sheet. That's about the best result they could ask for. :popcorn: for the second leg of the semis.

Chelsea will have to play to score a goal at Camp Nou imo. If they score or its 0-0 going into the last 20 min or so, then we will see the bus get parked.
