BRIAN SCIARETTA - Tuesday, July 10, 2012Stoke City's formal offer for Houston Dynamo and US national team central defender Geoff Cameron is now in the hands of Major League Soccer.A source close to the situation has confirmed to YA that the English Premier League club has submitted an offer in recent days and Major League Soccer is now reviewing the submission. A decision could happen at anytime, but it is not expected before Friday. Cameron, who celebrates his 27th birthday on Thursday, has been with Houston since 2008 when he was drafted with the 42nd pick in the SuperDraft. Since then, he has impressed as both a central defender and a defensive midfielder. If MLS accepts the offer, Cameron's next step would be to secure a United Kingdom work permit which he will have to win on an appeal as he has only been capped five times by the United States. To obtain a work permit in Great Britain, a player must play in 75% of his country's national team games in official competitions over the past two years. Last month's World Cup qualifier against Guatemala marked the only time Cameron has appeared in an official international competition. If a player does not meet this requirement, a work permit must then go through an appeals process which is decided in a subjective manner usually based on that player's importance, talent, and value. The source further told YA that there is general optimism that Cameron would win on appeal, but it is by no means a sure thing.

Dempsey to Liverpool could happen very soon.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to bid £7.5 million for Fulham's American star Clint Dempsey in his first major transfer raid.Rodgers wants to snap up Dempsey quickly and tie up a deal before the Kop fly to the shooting star's homeland next week.Dempsey had a sensational season for Fulham but may have to be sold as his deal is running down and he fancies a 'glamour' move at this stage of his career - with the Anfield club prepared to pay.Rodgers wants a couple of new faces and has the funds to land Dempsey - with Fulham willing to sell and also open to a possible exchange deal involving one of Liverpool's fringe men.Sources close to the Dempsey camp claim a deal may be pushed through as soon as Wednesday, with a fast transfer also suiting Fulham who would want to be able to spend the cash.

Kind of a gamble if he wants to play in the CL.

The key is the word "play" though. Certainly there are teams stronger than Liverpool who will be more likely to qualify for CL, but his playing time on those teams might be very small. Liverpool is not a bad spot for him. Outside chance of CL while still likely decent playing time. From a business point of view it should raise his profile here in the US which will help with sponsorship money. I even heard this transfer talk on a local sports talk radio station this morning which talks about soccer rarely. It helps though that both Liverpool and Dempsey have a tie to Boston.

USOC Semis tonight

I'll be at PPL as the Union chase their first ever trophy - the Sporks stand in their way tonight, who are looking to avenge a 4-0 beat down from a few weeks ago.

It'll be interesting to see how many people show up tonight, as the Union have marketed the hell out of this game.

- free tix for STH's who bought tix to the QF game vs Harrisburg

- free parking

- Dollar Dog Night

- email campaigns sent by the Phillies, Flyers, Eagles to THEIR season ticket holders to buy discounted tickets.

- radio ads ran on the sports stations this morning

They're going all out for this thing.

The other semi later this evening has Seattle hosting Chivas USA

C'MON THE U!

The US Open Cup is a tricky one to market. KC did very well last game though, I think breaking the attendance mark by a long way for a quarter final game.Do you know if the Philly-KC game is streaming tonight? I know the Seattle game is later on.For Philly to host the final, am I correct in stating that not only do they have to win (obviously) but Seattle can not win as well?If I understand things correctly these are the possible matchups for the final.Seattle @ KCChivas @ KCChivas @ PhillyPhilly @ Seattle

Dempsey to Liverpool would be terrible. They are not likely to make the Champions League in the next 2-3 years. Dempsey is turning into an icon at Fulham. The only reason to throw that down the tubes is for Champions League. Liverpool does nothing for him. Also, he is worth much more than 7.5. I'd be very surprised to see him sold that cheap.

I still think Chelsea would be a good fit.He may not play every game- but that's fine. I do think he fits nicely with their system and as he gets older, the chance to get league rest while playing w/against top CL competition would be huge... both the playing AND the rest. but what do I know.

There was some rumor of Chelsea a while ago but has died down since. I agree he does not need to play every day any more and may actually be beneficial for him not to as a US supporter hoping he can make to and through WC2014.It is early yet, but right now Liverpool seems to be the only option for him. I am not sure if Fulham would accept the offer(might depend on the player they get back) but it is not outrageously low for someone of his relatively advanced age. He will turn 30 during the next season.

Speaking of someone who is raising their domestic profile a bit, Bocanegra is showing up in some strange places. He is in the body issue of ESPN and was also playing in the celebrity all star softball game at the MLB All Star game.

Wow rumors are PSG bought Ibra and Silva from Milan for 65mil a piece.
Rumor is 65 million Euro's for both combined though, not a piece, I believe.http://au.eurosport.com/football/serie-a/2011-2012/milan-accept-psg-bids_sto3344251/story.shtmlThey are not screwing around out there. In a few years they could be easily a top 10 Euro side that competes for the CL consistently.

This is almost Torres-transfer level absurdity. Ibra is going to be 31 next season.Clearly the billionaires have already solved the new Financial Fairplay rules. They might as well walk right up to Platini and slap him in the face a few times.

If the 65 is for both it doesn't seem too far out of line to me.
Ibra is no spring chicken any more. He is going to be 31 at the start of the season. He may have only 2-3 top level years left. The majority of that deal is going to be Silva, IMO.Milan already turned down a 46M offer for Silva alone last monthhttp://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/clubfootball/news/newsid=1650267.html"AC Milan have turned down an offer of nearly €46m from Paris St Germain for coveted defender Thiago Silva, club owner Silvio Berlusconi has revealed."

Ibra is getting up there but 20mm doesn't seem bad IMO. He just cost Milan 24mm a year ago.

I agree. My point was that there was no way Ibra was worth 65 as the original post stated.

This could start a chain reaction of spending. I doubt Milan's just going to sit on 65M.
They should bring Kaka back.
Someone should pull him of Madrid's bench.
Altintop escaped.
Altintop was a moron to go to Madrid in the first place. He wasn't getting enough PT at Bayern, so he decided "Hey, why don't I sign with one of the 5 clubs in the world bigger than this one?"

Poor Nuri Şahin went from Bundesliga POY to 4 spot appearances with RM last year (he did miss a couple months with injury). Jebus.

He was mentioned in a transfer for Modric, but he stated he wanted to stay at RM. He has no chance of breaking into that line-up anytime soon so I assume he is content with warming benches for awhile. That's his prerogative, but it's hard to feel sorry for him.

KC beat Philly 2-0 in the semis of the US Open Cup. Zusi scored on the two goals.

KC will host the winner of the Seattle Chivas game going on now.

The final I think will be on FSC and the winner of the Cup gets a CCL spot.

Seattle beat Chivas 4-1 in the second semi final tonight.

Seattle now has a chance to be the first team ever to win 4 straight cups. Should be a nice final game between two very good sides.

I litterally can't believe I am about to type this. It has been nearly a decade of me ragging on this player. But it must be said. Eddie Johnson looks fantastic! Yes, that Eddie Johnson. I have watched him play twice in the last week and came away impressed both times. Strong on the ball, solid hold up play, excellent in the air, still has that incredible pace and will run at players. Short and medium distribution was great. And get this. His off the ball running was the best I have ever seen from him. Granted he was beyond weak in that area but even ignoring it he looked good. Nice angles, good timing, and very active (something he was never known to be). Sigi even started him in place of a healthy Montero tonight. Both announcers talked a lot about him. Martino went as far as saying if this continues, Klinsmann is going to call him up. His scoring has come a long with the great play. 6 goals in his last 9 games.
  I don't get it. He looked fantastic again tonight in the semi final for Seattle. He is mixing back to goal skills with turning and running at people. He is finding pockets all over the field. He made a perfectly timed run to score the games first goal.He was robbed of a second goal on a sweet volley by an imaginary offside call. He created the 3rd goal with a gorgeous little pass that sent Montero on a run (who eventually passed to Evans for the goal)

I have really no where else to put this, and I didn't want to start a new thread...

Business trip to asia = fun, but still work

Hong Kong = ridiculously awesome

Source tells me New York Cosmos will begin play in NASL (US 2nd tier) in 2013. Formal announcement later today.

Soccer luminary João Havelange and his son-in-law, Ricardo Teixiera, who used to lead the Brazilian soccer federation, received millions of dollars in alleged bribes in the 1990s from a now-collapsed sports marketing company, according to a court document released Wednesday.

Havelange, who formerly was president of international soccer’s governing body, received $1 million, while Teixiera got $13 million from ISL, the document said. The payments were made in the 1990s, the document said; ISL collapsed into bankruptcy in 2001. Under Swiss law at the time, the payments made by ISL were not illegal.

Teixiera and Havelange together received up to $22 million, including payments to entiries they controlled, according to the document.

The Swiss Federal Court ordered the release Wednesday of the 2010 document, from the prosecutor’s office in the canton of Zug, which followed a corruption investigation of Havelange and Teixiera. The document is a non-prosecution order against FIFA and the two men.

Teixiera and Havelange sought to block the document’s release after journalists requested the sealed papers; FIFA posted them on its website following the ruling.

Both FIFA’s legal representative and Teixiera denied criminal conduct in the document. Havelange “did not comment” on the allegations, the document said, and he didn’t respond to an email from Corruption Currents requesting comment.

“The question of whether the conduct was criminal does not have to be considered again,” the document said. FIFA, Teixiera and Havelange repaid millions of dollars of the alleged bribes to end the prosecutor’s investigation, it said.

A trial in Swiss court in 2008 cleared former ISL executives of fraud tied to the company’s collapse, but three of them were convicted on other charges.

FIFA said in a statement it was “pleased” the documents were now public, and noted that president Joseph “Sepp” Blatter was not involved in the case, or in recent delays in the document’s publication. Blatter, who succeeded Havelange as president in 1998, himself tweeted his satisfaction with the release of the ISL document.

Top officials at FIFA, however, did appear to know about the alleged bribes, according to the document, which said “various members of the executive committee had received money,” and that a CHF1 million payment to Havelange was “mistakenly directly transferred to a FIFA account.”

Havelange resigned from the International Olympic Committee in December 2011 for health reasons ahead of a ruling from the body’s executive board on whether he’d taken bribes from ISL. Teixiera couldn’t be reached. He stepped down in March from the Brazilian soccer federation, citing health and personal problems.

A spokesman for the Brazilian soccer federation at its Rio de Janiero offices declined to comment, saying it was a matter involving the two former executives.

The release of the ISL document was a key plank in Blatter’s reform proposals following his re-election to a fourth term as president of FIFA. He won unopposed after his chief rival, Mohamed bin Hammam, dropped from the race amid bribery allegations. Hammam, who has denied the allegation, was eventually banned for life by FIFA and is awaiting the results of an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Blatter also hired Swiss anti-corruption expert Mark Pieth to oversee a reform committee, which announced its plans in March and got FIFA’s Congress to approve a code of conduct in May.

Pieth had criticized FIFA’s handling of past scandals in his initial report. He said Wednesday to Bloomberg News he’s “very happy” the report is now out. “Now the world’s public has a chance to look at it and form its own opinion,” he said.

Hmmmm...So now they can finally find some players for a team. Or are they going to just pull up their existing youth squad? And I wonder how much MLS had to do with this? Was it important to have the Cosmos as a real team before joining MLS- even if the stadium issue is unresolved? (kinda obvious).

Ives is saying that this Cosmos team and "NY2" for MLS are seperate entities right now. MLS is continuing to look for a stadium site in NY for NY2. Whether or not NY2 and the Cosmos intersect some day is unknown.
