Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl)7/12/12 12:53 PMSource tells me New York Cosmos will begin play in NASL (US 2nd tier) in 2013. Formal announcement later today.
Hmmmm...So now they can finally find some players for a team. Or are they going to just pull up their existing youth squad? And I wonder how much MLS had to do with this? Was it important to have the Cosmos as a real team before joining MLS- even if the stadium issue is unresolved? (kinda obvious).
Ives is saying that this Cosmos team and "NY2" for MLS are seperate entities right now. MLS is continuing to look for a stadium site in NY for NY2. Whether or not NY2 and the Cosmos intersect some day is unknown.
Yeah- I kinda got that. But still- IF Cosmos are to be an MLS squad, I wonder if being a "real" team first was important to MLS, and thus joining NASL now instead of waiting for all the other stadium/NY2 things to fall into place.

What would you guys say Man United's chances are of winning the title next year?
I don't see it. But I never see it with them, and they keep on putting themselves into a spot to win. :shrug:IMO, next year it should go City, Chelsea and then United.

What has United done so far this summer? Signed Kagawa, lost Park...anything else? I wouldn't pick them any lower than second but I think City will win the league again. What are their odds at currently?

I don't see how it could hurt. It would be easy to point to Seattle, Portland and Vancouver and say "see those teams are doing great and they were a real team before moving up to MLS", but those teams all had decades of history behind them in one form or another. I am uncertain how much cache a second division NY team would pick up in 2-3 years (or when ever they can actually get a stadium done).

I bolded the interesting parts. I love the new tag line, "Twice in a Lifetime" :)

Dear Cosmos Country,

I would like to sincerely thank you for your patience and support over all of these years. It has been a long journey to get to this point, so I am delighted to announce that the New York Cosmos will be fielding a professional soccer team in the North American Soccer League (NASL) for the 2013 season.

It's been nearly 30 years since the Cosmos played a professional match. Our return is a testament to the passion and loyalty of our fans, and the hard work of folks like Peppe Pinton who helped keep the dream alive. We thank you for your loyalty and support throughout this period.

The owners of the Club are committed to running the team to the highest professional standards both on and off the field. As we look to the future, on a national and international stage, we remain conscious of the Club's unique and unmatched history, and the role this has played in the lives of so many of our fans. It is with this legacy in our heart that we set our minds to the future.

The Cosmos have a celebrated history with the NASL and with its rebirth in recent years, our entry was the natural first step of our return. We look forward to playing the competitive and entertaining style of soccer that you will expect from us as we take on some of our biggest traditional rivals like the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and Tampa Bay Rowdies. Our ultimate goal is to play at the very highest level and we feel today's announcement is the first step in that direction.

From Pelé and Messing to Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto and Beckenbauer, the Cosmos have always stood for excellence. While we celebrate and embrace our rich heritage, we hope you'll join us as we create new memories. We're excited about this first step and we'll have more announcements and information regarding the team and our home stadium in the very near future.

We are committed to reaching our place as the number one team in North America and our announcement today marks our first step on this great journey.

Thanks again for all your patience, faith and loyalty that made this day possible. We invite you all to join with us on this adventure.

Sincerely,

Seamus O'Brien

....The fact that Klinsmann is at the mercy of his player pool is at the root of many of his current dilemmas. That Clint Dempsey has played several different attacking positions under Klinsmann is a testament to the Fulham player's versatility, but it also highlights a few weaknesses in the U.S. attack. Will Jozy Altidore, Herculez Gomez, Terrence Boyd or some other unnamed forward step up to galvanize the offense and push Dempsey into more of an attacking midfielder role? Or will another creative element in midfield emerge to nudge Dempsey closer to goal? There are no easy answers."I kind of feel for Klinsmann," former Liverpool midfielder and ex-New England Revolution manager Steve Nicol said. "I think [the U.S.] is more than capable of defending further up the field. But when they get into that final third, they really don't have that cutting edge that other teams might have. That's Klinsmann's biggest problem. Obviously Dempsey, by getting on the end of stuff, is going to score goals if you can give him a supply. [Landon] Donovan at times has given him that."But after Clint and Landon, where is it coming from? I think Klinsmann has done a great job, he's absolutely galvanized them, but at the end of the day, you can only take that next step if you have that quality in the final third. I think that's what is missing."....."I can't tell you how important it is to have a guy willing to do the dirty work; hold it up and lay it off to someone else and allow the attack to develop," said former U.S. international defender Jimmy Conrad, who now does media work for YouTube's Kick TV channel. "If that person continually loses the ball, it's hard to generate any kind of attack."Altidore has obviously matured a ton in the last couple of years, but the more he can embrace that hold-up part of the role, the better off the whole team is going to be. It seems like it's such an innocent thing, not that big a deal, but it's such a huge part of how we're going to generate attacks and get people forward."

Have they said where they're playing? Randall's Island, like the original Cosmos?

Good point.I guess just showing that they can handle the day-to-day of running a professional organization would be worthwhile in terms of MLS brass. Even if it doesn't necessarily mean much to generating a public following ala Sounders.

What has United done so far this summer? Signed Kagawa, lost Park...anything else? I wouldn't pick them any lower than second but I think City will win the league again. What are their odds at currently?
They also signed Nick Powell, a developmental CM. SAF is saying that he wants to add at least one more guy. They've been linked to Lucas Moura, Joao Moutinho, and Leighton Baines.

They did not say. From the article"We're excited about this first step and we'll have more announcements and information regarding the team and our home stadium in the very near future."

Getting Vidic back and healthy would be the biggest "move" for them.

I am dieing to hear your thoughts on Eddie Johnson if you get a chance to see him play. Seattle will be on national TV at least 8 more times this year including this Sunday on ESPN against NY. I am biting my lip not to overstate his case so I need a reality check. There is no way a player could change this much this late so this might just be a blip on an otherwise disappointing career.

What has United done so far this summer? Signed Kagawa, lost Park...anything else? I wouldn't pick them any lower than second but I think City will win the league again. What are their odds at currently?
Fabio and Owen gone as well. It is still early although the Glazers are spending the transfer kitty on debt service.MUFC lost last year by the narrowest of margins. Setting their line twice as high as City's seems a bit high to me. City haven't made any moves either this summer (but they surely will). They'll definitely cram more talent into their 25 but there's always some risk of implosion given some of the personalities involved.

This is kind of my rationale as well. I jumped on MU +260.

I have a hard time seeing anyone beat City now that they have managed to gel all of that talent. It took time, but not only do they have a superstar squad now, they have a superstar team. The depth as well. Just absolutely absurd. You can never count United out because noone gets more from his players than Ferguson, but it's going to be tough to overcome two settled billionaire teams.

He was a guy that took me seeing him play live to dislike. And I know you remember his hot streak for club and country that started all of the EJ hype.I haven't seen anything of his resurgence other than the goals- but those were well taken. If he's figured out when and how to make his runs AND he's scoring goals... I welcome him back with open arms. Hell- even the latter part of that.

It will be interesting to see the effect of going public. The Glazers will maintain majority control, but the listing will bring a host of obligations and distractions in addition to a ton of cash. I don't think many people expect the Glazers to use the proceeds for operations or acquisitions.

This scam seems more like the Packers' stock offering than a legitimate investment opportunity. Buyers will have no real voting rights or stake in the actual club. The holding company is a vehicle to pay off the Glazer's debt. I don't know how anybody can possibly make money off of that except for the family and their creditors.

But I never see it with them, and they keep on putting themselves into a spot to win.

IMO, next year it should go City, Chelsea and then United.
I don't see that at all. 3rd would be a terrific season for Chelsea.

Here's where their odds are, roughly:Citeh: +120

Man U: +250

Chelsea: +500

Arsenal: +1200

Spurs: +2500

I am not 100% sure but I think the owners of PSG are also the owners of the new BeIn Sports channels that will be launching in a couple of weeks.

I was eating a bowl of fruit loops the morning.

On the back of the box was cut out cards of a bunch of different Olympic athletes.

One of the pictures was Juan Agudelo :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

Big Sam is the favorite at most of the UK books

I believer they're different Qatari holding companies but Sheikh Hamad probably has a big hand in both.
I think it is the same people maybe with multiple titlesPSG's president is Nasser Al-Khelaifi.Nasser Al-Khelaifi also runs Al Jazerra Sports. BeIn Sports I believe will be the American version of Al Jazerra Sports. Youssef Mohammad al-Obaidly is running BeIn Sports and reports directly to Nasser.

Found this interesting nugget about EPL ratings on ESPN

ESPN Has Most-Viewed EPL Season: The ESPN family of networks averaged a 0.23 U.S. rating and 321,000 viewers for the 2011-12 English Premier League season, up 10% in ratings and 7% in viewership from last year (0.21, 301K), and the most-viewed EPL season ever on ESPN. The season included three of the five most-viewed EPL matches on ESPN, led by Manchester City/Manchester United on April 30 — the most-viewed EPL telecast ever on U.S. cable television.
Not only is this good news for EPL fans, but very good news for MLS fans. At the midway point of the 2012 season, MLS is averaging 360k viewers on ESPN/ESPN2 (obviously better time slots helps).

Chelsea's MF is going to be scary good... where they get their goals is question though. I still believe they'll find somebody either on their roster or through $$ to score them. United's MF doesn't scare me- which is why I put Chelsea ahead of them- although it hasn't for a while and they keep on producing.

Floppo, I just realized you may have missed this when away. It concerns MLS focusing on Flushing Meadows for the NY2 stadium. Lots of interesting tidbits in herehttp://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303640804577491090757743910.html
Thanks andy! I did miss that.
I still wish there was a way of bringing a team to Manhattan- Flushing Meadows is about equidistant for me as RBNY in Harrison.

Thanks GBRough night. The ref was awful (shocking for the USOC I know) and Roger Espinoza was an absolute disgrace with persistent flopping and writhing on the ground for basically the entire last 20 minutes. But the Union lost this one on merit - SKC played a very organized defense with high pressure, and basically marked Adu and Marian right out of the game. Pajoy and Jack Mac didn't help them with a lack of creative runs, and the Nowakian style of pumping long balls in reared it's ugly head. Not an effective style for a team as small in size as the Union currently are. Overall the whole team just looked off, and frustrated.8k attendance, which is a really good number for this tournament.Nice run Union

Hulk?
He claims that he has not spoken with Chelsea and would be content staying at Porto. So, he should be signed by the end of next week.

It'll be interesting to see how things shake out for Rangers newco in SPL.http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jul/13/rangers-scottish-third-divisionCurrent plan is for them to start in third division but that might be changed when they see the TV revenue ramifications for the league.
Ranger's new Glasgow derby nemesis is Queen's Park FC
Queen's Park Football Club are an association football club based in Glasgow, Scotland. The club is currently the only amateur club in the Scottish League; their amateur status is reflected by their motto, "Ludere Causa Ludendi" – to play for the sake of playing. Queen's Park are the oldest association football club in Scotland, having been founded in 1867, and are the oldest outside of England and Wales. Queen's Park are also the only Scottish football club to have played in the FA Cup Final, achieving this feat in both 1884 and 1885. The club's home is one of 29 UEFA Category three stadia, the all-seated Hampden Park in South East Glasgow, which is also the home of the Scottish national team. Queen's Park have won the Scottish Cup the third most times of any club, behind Rangers and Celtic, although the last time they won it was in 1893.
