Huge swing there. Starting midfielder Verratti also got his third yellow of the tournament and and will miss the return leg as well. Valencia has a shot at it now. At least enough to make watching the game worthwhile

Liverpool hasn't won a hill of #### since I started following them and apparently it's only getting worse. I'm not sure how they're the same thing.

What is going to get worse? Sturridge looks to be a decent complementary piece to Suarez and while they might not make it back to top 4 in the very near future, the future is still fairly bright for them at least more so than a few years ago.

I started to respond with the same thing based on 20+ years of league play, but then I remembered the CL win, another CL runner up, a UEFA Cup trophy, three League Cups and a couple FA Cups -- and my high horse broke a leg before I could get up there.

Why are we arguing over who is a real fan based on who they support?Who cares if someone watches his team practice live 4 times a week vs someone has never even been in the country and calls the club "we". Just have fun with who you support whether in be in misery or glory, plenty of both to go around

The centerbacks are terrible, LB is average, Lucas has no cover, Stevie G is getting older, Downing is inconsistent to say the least, Allen/Borini have made no impact and Pepe Reina wouldn't start for a Sunday afternoon beer league soccer team.

I wouldn't say the CB's are terrible. But the main point is, the roster is as talented if not more talented than the last few years and more importantly, they are younger. Yes, Stevie G is getting up there but apart from that, you have a bunch of young guys who you have to be excited about even if they don't perform right now. I'd much rather have someone like Sterling than Kuyt and it is nice to see they have a future which was severely lacking the past few years. And everyone would agree Reina blows.

The whole Liverpool team is just crazy inconsistent. The CB's will look like the best pairing in the Prem for a few games and then one or both of Skrtl and Agger go to ####. The midfield is a little mishandled by BR. Shelvey needs to go out on loan now that Coutinho is in. Allen should never start right now. You have to go with Gerrard, Hendo and Lucas for a run of games. Of course they have 3 in 6 days right now so what is BR to do?The attack is fine for years on paper. Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling, Downing(at this moment) seem to work. Borrini has a great work rate and a goal may set him off. But for now he is trash.The real issue is no CL football after next year and Suarez is gone. He won't waste his talents on a midtable team. He may be gone this summer if Bayern come in with a 50m bid. I wouldn't blame him.If he goes we get to see Big Andy the Horseman in action again maybe. But, Liverpool will not be able to attract another Suarez type if not in the CL. I think the Daglish mystique was what brought him in.

Unless FFP has some teeth, Liverpool are in a group of teams that will fight for fourth place most years. They can't compete financially with the big three unless John W. Henry discovers oil beneath Fenway Park. Some improvements to Anfield will increase revenues but only after the debt is paid down.

So it was just by random happenstance that you decided to follow a team that has 5 European titles (3rd most in Europe), and 18 league titles in a league one of the toughest in the world? Isn't that kind of "uninspired"? How many American knobs follow Liverpool simply because they like the Beatles?I'd submit that hating a bunch of fascist ####s like Real Madrid is as good a reason as any.

To be fair, they haven't won a league title since 1990 and if you go back that far, I think we can officially transition you from bandwagon to legit fan. Likewise, since '84, they've won 1 European title. So it isn't like they've been great recently. I forget all the reasons I started following Liverpool. A big reason was Stevie G who I loved to watch play and I liked their style. Additionally, I didn't want to follow a Man U or Chelsea b/c that seemed like more of a front runner but at the same time, I'm not going to follow QPR or Reading and Liverpool was always on TV so they were easy to follow. I'm not sure how else Americans are to pick a squad when they have no familial ties and they are the first generation to follow soccer.
Besides I figure there are bigger fish to fry with front runners with fans of teams like Barca, Real, Man U., Chelsea, or even Man City.

I started following Liverpool in 1998 because they were big club that had a history -- glory, but also Heysel and Hillsborough -- and would be on TV a lot. At the time they also had Brad Friedel and Michael Owen was exploding onto the scene. They were also in opposition to Man United, which carried a lot of weight for me. In the late 90s you could shake a stick without hitting a bandwagonning idiot. I also had/have a thing for teams with fans who are out of favor with the dominant culture in some way. Catholic Celtic, blue-collar Liverpool, anti-fascist Catalan Barcelona. I got carried away at one point and had way too many teams in my fanship portfolio, but those three stuck.

Michael Cox noted on twitter the irony of Ramos and Alonso both playing on a yellow today - they were the two who infamously took tactical reds for intentional time wasting a couple years ago in the group rounds to avoid being in this situation. It will be a surprise if they both survive 90 without a booking.

Shakhtar was fun to watch in the group rounds, even as they knocked my team out, but I think Willian was the creative force for them and he's at Anzhi now. They used the money to buy Taison to fill that role - would be great for them if he comes close.

To me the hardest to understand were the people from Castile (specifically Valladolid). Supposedly they speak the "most pure" form of the language (hence Castellano), but lord knows if I could understand them. So gutteral.The nicest people that I found were from the Canary Islands, followed by the people from Galicia. Both were very friendly and open, particularly the ones from Canarias. Much more similar to Latin Americans in demeanor, language, and relationships.But that's my opinion. Barcelona is a better city overall though.They certainly were more friendly towards me than people in the center of the country. Hard as #### to understand though.Eh...... I got used to the Valladolid accent eventually. Nicest people I met over there were from the Basque and Cantabria regions actually. Yep. Had no idea about the history when I picked a team. Just liked watching Stevie G and Torres play. The fact that all the powerdouches I know liked ManU was also a major factor. And of course, the Beatles.

I think he is in our EPL fantasy league. Speaking of that, I think I will cheer for RM today as RVP is pretty much our entire team and I don't want Fergie to have any extra reasons to rest him with ManU running away with the EPL title. Having ManU out of CL will help.

I agree you get an exemption for Jmon, but I otherwise bristle a bit at accusations of front running. With a few exceptions, I don't think any of us were born into our clubs. I completely support all efforts to mock and brutalize each other's respective teams, and generally think this thread is overly tame in that regard (but we've got other boards for that). I'm not really sure what it means to "choose" a club to follow. I couldn't just change my mind one day and decide I like some other big club.

I'm pretty excited about this as a neutral. It'll be a good test for ManU and maybe for the EPL as well. I've not seen much of RM this season, but I expect Ozil to have fun today against that midfield.
