It was nine months ago and there was a lot of financial damage done in that transfer window. The petro-clubs have made Liverpool a second-tier team, but they have not changed their finances. It's certainly possible that they will re-emerge next season, but they will still be battling with Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton, etc. for that last CL spot. Arsenal has money, and Tottenham and Everton run leaner. I doubt they have much time to right the ship before they become a selling club to maintain finances.
Nine months ago factoring in the previous ten. Not like it was nine months ago to current. Also before the new Warrior uni deal and FSG paying off previous non-stadium building debt left over by H&G.Same crap when once a year it comes out about United being 400M in debt.

Anyone been to a Houston Dynamo game? I got tickets to the match tonight and plan to head down a few hours early and hang out (Lucky's?). My first soccer match!
That is great. I have not been but I heard the new stadium is fun to take in a game. I will be watching that game on TV tonight on NBCSN.Let us know what you think of the stadium and game. Houston should have a solid team again this year and many are predicting another deep run.
I was there as well - got hooked up with great seats at midfield. I don't keep up with MLS but the Dynamo looked good. Not sure if DC is that bad but they couldn't get anything going offensively. And yeah, the stadium is  . Perfect size for an MLS team and well designed.

DC is not that bad from what I know, they should contend for a playoff spot at least this season. They were missing DeRo via the head butt suspension, but it appears that they suck playing in Houston. During the telecast they put up a stat showing their record there and it was atrocious. Houston did look good. The Honduran Boniek-Garcia is such a nice player.

Wow, ESPN is not fooling around with Mexican soccer. After just recently signing the deal to show the Mexican National Team games for the next few years, they have secured the rights to Liga MX (top league in Mexico) and the Copa MX(their domestic cup competition).ESPN2 and ESPNews will be used to air 11 games through out the rest of the season and gives ESPN Deportes access to 60 more Liga MX games to televise.ESPN3 will start having Mexican games as well.

So the Galaxy now hold the largest (by a wide margin) stadium naming rights, local tv deal and shirt sponsorship in the league. They are starting almost $10-$15 million in revenue ahead of the vast majority of the league before even a single ticket is sold.

We had a good time. Got seats in the first row along the end line... about 10' away from the corner at the opposite end of the pitch from the "rowdy zone." I was kind of underwhelmed by the crowd... probably had a lot to do with the fact that it was effing COLD and windy. (Yes, I get that 45 isn't "cold" but it was damn chilly for H-Town and the wind was kicking.). There were also a lot of cynical remarks from the folks around me... sadly typical of Houston sports fans. But as I said, we really did have fun. Good flow to the game and I though Bruin and Taylor stood out for Houston.

Mascherano when asked who will win tonight:

"Because Real Madrid & Manchester United can't both lose I have no preference."

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I hope it is even colder there tonight. :)Houston has a very tough quarter final matchup against Santos (with Herculez Gomez) starting tonight.

Trivia Time:

Last year we learned that Ramiro Corrales was the only player left who played in the first season of MLS. Keep that in mind because he is not the answer to the question below as he spent a couple of years abroad.

Only two players in MLS history have played games in 16 seasons of the league. One is a keeper, one is a field player. Name them.

Bonus question: A 3rd player could enter this list very shortly. Name him.

I'll guess Pat Onstad as the keeper.

I know the field player because I happened to read an article that contained that trivia a couple of days ago. It's someone most poeple in this thread will recognize.

Nope. That was a good guess though.

Yeah, I think I figured it out trying to confirm. Did Onstad replace the correct GK answer?

No, I don't think Onstad ever played on the teams that the correct GK answered played on. That may help narrow the field. The keeper is a harder one than the field player as Moe mentioned above.More hints. The keeper only had a cup of coffee with nats as did the answer to the bonus question. The field player was an important member of the US Nats for many years.

I was thinking of Joe Cannon, who I guess is going on 14 himself. But I think I have it now. Zach Thornton?

So close on Thorton. He got to 15 :)See my post above, I added in some hints.

Here is one more hint.

The answer to the keeper is not on an MLS roster this season so he set the 16 season record last year.

The answer to the bonus question is obviously on a roster this year and just as obviously did not play on opening weekend.

SAF taking big chance today, imo.

Rooney on bench.

Starting Cleverly and Nani both in the midfield - neither very good defensively. Welbeck gets the start again up top with RvP.

Standard defense - Giggs and Carrick also both starting/

I would say Cleverly (more than Giggs) was preferred over Rooney, right? Vidic over Evans a surprise as well.
Wouldn't Cleverly play in the role we'd expect Jones to have played had he been healthy?I would have said that the most likely formation would have been something like (keep in mind I can't code this crap). RVPWelbeck Rooney Tony V (for defense)Carrick Jones (man marking Ronaldo)Evra 2 or Evans/Rio/Vidic Rafael

I wonder whether Modric regrets going to RM. I saw he played against Barcelona this week, but seems to be riding the pine whenever I see RM play.

I never quite knew what RM was thinking. Modric is a natural to replace Xabi Alonso when he doesn't play. But Xabi Alonso is probably the second most important player on RM. He's not going to sit.

My take on the Man U lineup is that Fergie is running a traditional 4-4-2. He wants Welbeck's pace to stretch Real Madrid and he'd rather use Rooney to sub out RVP early in the 2nd half than use him in wide midfield. He wants players that can create but that will not get sucked up front, so he's playing traditional wingers. He (perhaps rightly) guesses that Mourinho will concede a lot of possession in midfield and try to play on the break, so he's played four in midfield that are good on the ball.

Mila Kunis seems really fun.http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=z4Ezruu1oeQ
I've seen several interviews of her and read some articles and she's always come across as a really cool chick.WTF with no Rooney?!?!?!!!!!

Looking over the reserves for these two teams I'm amazed by the depth. They could form a first XI from the two benches that would challenge for a title anywhere in Europe
