Good news is that the same +/- would probably see them finish higher next season and they're "only" +8-10 goal difference from contending.
I'm fascinated that Arsenal, with their sieve center-backs, losing Alex Song and replacing him with a somewhat-out-of-position Arteta, and GK carousel during the second half of the season finished 2nd in goals conceded. Really a testament to what Steve Bould has done for the team this year.
I read somewhere that the Mertesacker-Koscielny CB pairing was the best in the league statistically (presumably as measured by opposing goals scored/90 mins).

Also, while not "natural" and certainly better used farther up the pitch, Arteta makes a good DM.

Still not worth the effort. They aren't going to get rid of the stigma until they stop making it the CL loser's bracket.
It's going to always be the 2nd choice European competition regardless of the CL loser's bracket, since it's getting teams that often aren't even the best in their respective divisions.

It's fine for what it is, which is an alternative tournament for good-but-not-great teams who can use extra football to develop players. I'm glad they have this mini-"promotion" system in place.

Gareth Bale signs £130,000-a-week contract with Spurs ... but can leave next summer for £50m

Interesting if true. £50m might be a tad low, but it gives them a chance to put some pieces around him this summer.
 I give Spurs a hard time. But I like this. The more teams with elite players, the better, IMO. We get to keep seeing him play in the the BPL next season. And it's not in a friggin' red or blue jersey. If they add a few pieces and qualify for CL next year, he may just stay beyond next year.

I seem to recall them winning a bunch of games by ridiculous margins, but not really losing any by the same... that would skew the goals for and against

Forgive me for thinking the only red jersey that counts these days happens to reside in Manchester.

Do they do plus/minus ratings in soccer? Is that even valid?
It would have far less utility in soccer because the substitutions are so limited. It's not like basketball and hockey when multiple combinations are out there in a game. You only get three subs. I'm sure they track the stat and know, for instance, that Arsenal concedes fewer goals with Koscielny and Mertesacker per 90 minutes than with either of the two and Vermaelen. But I doubt it goes much farther than that.

Forgive me for thinking that fat chicks are gross, and that QPR will be lucky to not get relegated to League 1 next year.

Thanks for the FIFA recommend. Lots of 4-player action with the family. Good times. I am the master of the red card.

I find it really hard to get red cards in FIFA 13.
I don't play online, but it seems that most experienced players don't slide tackle. I still get pissed at how fouls are called. I seem to get more fouls when I'm not even tackling.
Slide tackling really only works near the sidelines in 13. Trying one near the middle of the field rarely gets you red carded, but does usually leave you sitting on your ### watching the attacker dribble around you.

It also really depends on which player you're using. As much as I hate him, Pepe is a slide tackling machine in FIFA13.

I love a well-timed slide tackle. Really need to get the angle right too. What pisses me off is when you get the tackle, but the ball falls to the opponent or even the guy you tackled because he got up before you.

Sounds like you might have enough people to try and get a team going again? Or how about a little casual round robin?

As opposed to all of this scintillating FIFA 13 slide tackle/red card talk?

So what happens to the Cosmos?
They're already set to join NASL this fall.
Yeah, but I thought their intent was to join MLS in the future, no?
IIRC, they're not interested in joining as long as the single-entity structure and salary cap are in place. I think they were hoping that if they could build up enough of a following in NASL, they could eventually force MLS to change the rules to accommodate them. Looks like they might have gambled and lost on that one.

In the market for a new ball. Anyone have anyone in here have a go-to brand or a stay-away brand? Found a Wilson for half off, but don't generally associate Wilson with soccer.

Goetze was ruled out today. With Hummels hobbling on a bad ankle, things are not looking good for Dortmund or for neutral fans wanting to see a good final. Bayern is fit, extremely motivated and riding high. It will be an absolute disaster if they fail. Good friend of mine is driving up to London from Bavaria with two tickets in hand - a lifelong Bayern fan and season ticket holder - and said today he is "shivering when I think that this final could get lost, as the two others I have watched."

I just read this.I understand your friend's feeling. Losing last season's final was crushing, I don't know if there is a word for losing this year as well.

This is a good friend of mine of nearly 30 years. We've traveled together and been to many sporting events together all over Europe, including Germany games and BM games at the old Olympia Stadium. We talk via email year round, mostly about sports and mostly euro football. He was at the final last year but has never mentioned it since. We had a ton of discussion leading up to the game, but he's ignored every comment or question I've made regarding that game, including of course the obligatory "your team was better and deserved to win" comments I made several times afterward. Bayern is a strange breed. The pressure on these players is tremendous. I think by far the worst part of losing would be having to face the scorn of Beckenbauer, Hoeness, Rummenigge, et al.

Dude... twins! I can't even imagine.

Where are you living?
I'm in Baltimore. Been living here for almost 2 years. We live in town in a 2 story row home that we rent. We're looking for a bigger place in or neighborhood but didn't have much luck. Made an offer on one place, but lost out. We're waiting fort Thomas to shaker out a bit in our family situation before we start the host search up again.I'm off till may 30. My MIL had been staying with us since the berth. We'd be so ####ed without her. My mom comes on Saturday and will replace my MIL for a week. Then my wife will be alone for a few days until her sister comes from VZLA. Then MIL returns for a week, and then we're on our own.

MIL intends to retire and move to BMore in Sept to hero raise the twins. That's what's been tough in terms of the house search. We're trying to find a place that has living spaces for my family as well as a separate one for my MIL.

My life just got very different...

Where the hell were you? Thought we'd lost toy a few months back.

Good luck Z. And GB grandmothers. They'll save your life -- keep one around at all times if possible. And I say that as someone who only had one at a time.

Just to update some things I'm pretty sure no one cares about:

Bad News:

I lost out on Xolos-Meniero tix. All sold out in presale to season ticket holders and scalpers are asking crazy prices. :sadbanana:

Good News:

Very good chance I am going to the USA-Germany Friendly in DC. Happen to be there at the same time. :pickle: Anyone else going? Z?

And

Got clearance from work and booked my flight for the Seattle qualifier. :pickle:
