I thought like every person in your town was Portuguese? No Figo or Rui Costa?

Soares and Soares are destined to be your best players.
One is my nephew...so no. He'll be my "effort kid"

Just the soccer gods making up for giving me the Mexico U10 national team last year

Bouvet seems like the kind of kid who will play at Clairefontaine but end up in his senior days playing for Senegal

Somebody explain this Premier League TV deal to me in very simple terms. My understanding is, that as a Time Warner customer, I'm going to get every game on TV through NBC Sports Properties including Premier League extra time. However, I can't watch them all on the laptop or tablet because Time Warner is not a party to NBC Sports Extra. Is that right?

Have we talked about this article in this thread? Because it seems like something Gator should look into.

Conference South side Farnborough FC went into administration in April an extra depressing turn of events for a club that had only been founded six years earlier as the replacement for liquidated Farnborough Town FC. The new club's financial situation could have kept them from participating this season, but then bookmaker Paddy Power swooped in with an offer to sponsor the club and provide the money they so desperately needed. And in exchange, the players and manager all had to legally change their names so Paddy Power could extract maximum publicity from the deal.

Over the summer it looked touch and go whether wed even start the season," manager Spencer Day (now Jose Mourinho) told the club's official website. "But now weve got by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. Although its not all good news, Pelé and Maradona have almost come to blows over who gets to wear the number 10.

Yes, Paddy Power who you might remember from Nicklas Bendtner's underpants and their Stamford Bridge billboard mocking Fernando Torres got the manager and players all to change their names by deed poll to those of pre-existing legends of the game both past and present. Here's the full squad:

GK: Gordon Banks (Kevin Scriven)

DF: Lothar Matthaus (Joshua Huggins)

DF: Roberto Carlos (Oliver Treacher)

DF: Paolo Maldini (Adam Doyle)

DF: Alan Hansen (Alan Inns)

DF: Cafu (Paul Massaquoi)

DF: John Terry (Djibril Fofana)

DF: Franz Beckenbauer (Thomas McGarry)

MF: George Best (Reece Jones)

MF: Paul Gascoigne (Stephen Laidler)

MF: Zinedine Zidane (Merrick James-Lewis)

MF: Johann Cruyff (Tyrone Berry)

FW: Lionel Messi (Daniel Bennett)

FW: Gary Lineker (Reece Connolly)

FW: Diego Maradona (David Tarpey)

FW: Pele (Elvis Hammond)

Manager: Jose Mourinho (Spencer Day)

Assistant: Paddy Power (James Dynan)

Coach: Sir Alex Ferguson (Simon Gardener)

Kitman: Terry Venables (Roger Peirce)

Third annual "rate my youth soccer team by racially judging the player's names"-LoogmanTosteSoaresSoaresGlynnBouvetApgarLeistDuffDuffyCalhounWelch  ...I'm ####edand i've just triple checked the fact that I have a Duff AND Duffy on my team. :mindblown:
I've got a Duff Chelsea jersey ca. 2004, the old Fly Emirates kit. Still love watching him play, now for Fulham.

EPL has lost it's edge. Still lots of money to spend, but how many top players spurned English clubs to play in Germany, Italy, France or Spain this summer? Seems like quite a few.
Hell, even the Ukraine. Add in the UAE teams and it seems pretty clear that teams that may have been banking on FFP to keep prices down (never it's design, but something some teams seem to have been planning on) are sorely mistaken. Of course, I suspect we'll see more cases like with Malaga, Anzhi and the Chinese league where the team is blown up pretty shortly thereafter

It will be interesting to see what happens with Monaco as they really turned the market upside down. For all the talk of the BPL losing its mojo, Spurs keep adding players, though. Looks like they're getting Osvaldo now (another target that I'm a little surprised Arsenal weren't interested in).

BTW, here is Di Canio's take on what a reasonable expectation of Jozy should be.

"I don't hope he will be a success here, I know he will. He will score many goals for us. I can't give you a number, but it will be 15 or more if he uses the energy he did for the national team. He is an animal.”

I think as Arsenal fans should be glad they didn't pursue Osvaldo. He reminds me a lot of the last striker that moved from Roma to the EPL and I think will see similar results. Oddly, Roma goes out and gets Gervinho who had certainly fallen out of favor at the emirates though. Will be interested to see how that one works out.

And re the EPL losing it's edge, yeah, certainly something can be said for that. But money talks. And there is big money being thrown around by lots of other clubs outside the EPL.

I am very (close to all caps VERY) surprised United hasn't been able to land anyone. I don't think they're afraid to spend. Weird that a tight ### owner like LEvy is able to land a number of nice pieces though.

I wonder if some clubs are holding bigger clubs, such as United and Arsenal, to higher standards/costs when they are trying to land their players. I mean if two teams are pursuing the same player, let's say Spurs and Arsenal, does the team that own the rights to that player stand firm with a 50m valuation to Arsenal but let him go for 35m to Spurs? It seems to me that the bigger clubs, especially in the EPL, are either a) not signing many guys or b) seeming to have to be exorbitant prices for their targets. Man City this year has seemed to have been bargain shopping ffs, and have probably landed the best signings in the EPL by a fair bit. I expect Negredo, Navas and Jovetic I feel can all be impact players right out of the gates.

Just some random nonsense as I've been supremely busy at work the past two weeks, but itching to watch some soccer bad.

Had to get my fix last night watching brazilian game, albeit a lively one, between Internacional and Botofago. some familiar faces out there for both sides...but I dunno if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but they were playing with an orange soccer ball :loco:

Hey, Paddy Power. Elvis is bigger than Pele.

It's always nice when a fascist calls his big striker of black African heritage an "animal". :oldunsure:

Allen

Gerrard Lucas
Still not sure I like the Gerrard--Allen--Lucas trio in the midfield together. Was sort of what I was asking yesterday though -- who else is an option?

If Aspas is decent as a 3rd forward option it'll help the side a lot. Looks like he scored about every 3rd appearance for Celta Vigo.

I was catching up on the thread before I was going to post this exact comment.

Ideally Coutinho would be the AM, not Allen. Allen is VERY good technically and handles the ball well in tight spaces. The last two preseason games he was in this roll and was always running around in the 18yd box. Henderson is the other option and I prefer him to Allen, but he's more suited for the Gerrard spot as he's more physical than Allen and can partner well with Lucas and still push forward.

Sterling is an option too and very well could start out wide pushing Coutinho back into the #10 role. I just feel Rodgers is more comfortable with Allen right now.

I've been amused following the threads trying to come up with a fan chant for Jozy at the Stadium of Light. I think this would work (to the tune of The Addams Family theme)

It's simply undisputed

he'll score it if he shoots it

It's magic when he boots it

The man we call Jozy

The Mackems give their thanks

to all their favorite Yanks

George Clooney and Tom Hanks

and the man we call Jozy

Score! More! Altidore!

Here's an article about it. It's somewhat Philly-centric, but covers all of the cable providershttp://mobile.philly.com/blogs/?wss=/philly/blogs/thegoalkeeper/&id=217434341

ETA: it appears you are correct about Time Warner not having a deal in place with NBCU to do the online streaming yet. That sucks
