This is interesting-

@martynziegler: Man City's huge FFP fine to be shared out among last season's CL clubs including Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/european/manchester-city-ffp-fine-to-be-shared-among-other-champions-league-clubs-9721874.html
Exhibit #2459043094353490590 that FFP is not about fair play at all, but about traditional powers preserving the status quo.
It should go to all teams not in the CL from the penalized team's league.
UEFA doesn't have jurisdiction to do that. In England the FA has its own FFP, so the FA would handle fines and redistribution of fines within their structure.

Good point, I looked over that.

Europa League teams then?

Yeah, that's more complicated, especially when you consider that higher seeded CL teams that get eliminated in the group stages spill over into the Europa League. I don't know how that's handled.

On a happier FFP note, Gazprom is about to purchase one of my favorite teams, Red Star Belgrade.

Red Star was banned from the CL this year for FFP violations, but Gazprom is expected to wipe out the club's enormous debt, so that won't be an issue going forward.

It just warms my heart when dangerously insane Serbian fans get backing from a massive Russian corporation. How can you not root for a club like that?

UEFA could give money to its member associations, right? It seems like there has to be a better way than giving more money to huge clubs for no reason.

Gazprom already owns Zenit and is Schalke's shirt sponsor, and is also Chelsea's "Global Energy Partner". It also sponsors the Champions League. It strikes me as one of those weird marketing strategies I don't understand - are global football fans really fickle energy consumers deciding among several different providers? I get Chevy, Samsung, XBox 360 and Mansion. Qatar Airways and Azerbaijan seem a bit strange. Gazprom sponsorships are truly an oddball, almost like a federal US postal agency sponsoring a bicycling team.

The truly amazing thing is that UEFA is giving money back to the clubs at all. I'm skeptical.

Nice that it's happening on the 100th anniversary of WWI

My guess - based on absolutely zero knowledge of anything or anyone involved - is that it's a way for Russian oligarchs to funnel corporate profits into their personal accounts.

Money laundering is such a dirty term...I prefer re-appropriation of assets.

I actually don't think they are laundering per se since the money was probably acquired legally in Russia, but more correctly getting the assets out of Russia.

I also believe the whole Qatari airlines sponsorship was a payoff for the 2022 WC vote.

It is about branding more than influencing individual consumption decisions.

the article says the money will be split among CL and Europa teams from last season. A second payment will be split among same group from this season.

Huge win for Cyprus as well. Bosnia-Herzegovina isn't (aren't) the giants that Holland is but they were a Pot 1 team in the draw.

Powerhouses Wales and Cyprus are currently sitting top of Group B.

ZaZa! Italy defeat Norway 2-0, in Norway, for 1st time ever. In the short time under Conte, they look more structured & decisive, building the attack from the back...was curious to see how they'd fare without Pirlo. ZaZa was immense, scoring once, hitting underside of crossbar, and chipping GK only to have defender clear off the line. He's the first Sassuolo player to ever be capped for the Azzuri. ZaZa!

Atlanta has hired Daren Eales to become their team president. Eales is currently an executive director with Spurs. He will move to Atlanta later this year after he transitions his work at Spurs.

Manchester United out with their financials. Newsflash they made moolah last year. Back of the envelope calculation for this year say they may be lose about 60-90 million pounds after all those transfers for this year and the expected lost 40 million pounds in revenue. That's mitigated since they paid back about 50 million on their debt last year.

Granted the full brunt of last year's season doesn't hit until this year, but they should be able to spend reasonably well on transfers even if they miss the CL again this year.

I guess they updated the story as this little tidbit seems somewhat important:

"We assume [united will finish] third in our budgets," Woodward said in a conference call to Wall Street analysts.

Well they don't have to pay Moyes 5.2 million pounds to go away this year, so they have that going for them as well. Their wage bill also goes down as they don't have to pay CL bonuses and shipped out Welbeck, Cleverly, et al.

Cleverly and Welbeck combined make less than Flacao, their wage bill will not go down.

Well their future revenue is directly tied to champions league next season, so I am sure they are painting the most optimistic view for investors

Strangely, in his last Champions League game managing United, Fergie started Welbeck, Cleverly, Rio, Vidic and Evra against Real Madrid and was leading 1-0 (2-1 agg) until Nani's red card.

They're going to have their work cut out to finish top 4 - I don't see it happening.

There are a disproportionate number of "full kit wankers" who are Liverpool fans. It's unbelievable how many 'Pool fan photos like this get put out there.
I imagine if you did a venn diagram of liverpool fans and wankers there would be a considerable overlap
