Voldemort to newcastle... impact signing of the transfer period?

He looked really good last week, totally changed the shape of that toon team

Roadkill, I recommend you don't read this ;)

UEFA is considering a significant change to the Champions League to make it much more closed competition instead of earning your way in. This discussion has come about as it looks like the big clubs are starting to throw around the idea again of breaking away to form a "Super League", which was the impetus for the original transformation from the Champions Cup to the Champions League

Forest for the trees, goose that laid the golden egg, etc.

Financially speaking, would it be that bad? Fans of a big club that never qualifies (like say LFC) would be a lot more likely to watch early round games than watching the second place team in Turkey play the champions of Belgium or whatever. Seems like a winner in terms of TV contract.

How popular would it be here if we reserved playoff spots for the Yankees or Lakers or Cowboys? Despite their giant senses of self-entitlement, I can't see even the fans of those teams being comfortable with something like that. And they're thinking of doing this all for a couple more euros?

I'm actually fairly ok with the formation of a European Super League, as long as there's a way in for clubs who don't get selected for it on the first go round. I hate closed leagues and all of you should, too. But while I'm ok with Liverpool or Tottenham finishing last in the Super League, will their fans think it's better?

Yes. I think more people would watch the first round of the playoffs every year if the Yankees or Lakers were in it instead of the Devil Rays or Grizzlies.

That may well be true. But would fans overall be happy with a system where performance on the field became of lesser importance than tv ratings? I think you risk underpinning one of the fundamental concepts of sports.

I wouldn't be one of them. I'd be more inclined to stop watching entirely. They could contract my team, and I'd find something else to follow.

I would imagine that fans are already pretty unhappy overall right now. The games themselves are compromised for television all the time and have been for years. Hasn't seemed to have any negative effect on owner cash flow.

I think we Americans underestimate the importance that the possibility of promotion has to millions of fans. Because we don't have it here we blithely assume that everyone will be content to support a team that belongs to the closed fraternity. I don't think that's the reality in world footy.

Chelsea won today, but man they look awful. Hazard is non-existent.
 I thought it he looked pretty damned awesome for the whole 15 minutes he played in his first game back from injure. He was directly involved in 3 scoring chances that could have easily let to goals with better finishing (2 by Remy and 1 by Willian)
