Jackson Martinez to China for $45Mil Euro.
Guarin and Jackson Martinez on the way to China, Falcao may be next. Chinese are spending serious money.
Good business by Atletico getting $45mil for Martinez. He wasn't really doing much at Atletico.
Who gets to be called "the Pharoah?"Roma win their 2nd game in 3 days, dealing with many injuries. Spaletti imposing his will & footballing acumen(?)bon this team already, after only 4 games. One-touch passing, vertical & incisive passing, triangles...beautiful in it's simplicity. Under Rudi Garcia, it was all speed, counterattack; speed, mindless running; speed,4-3-3...etc, etc, etc. The two Egyptians each scored, with El Sharawy scoring his 2nd goal in his 2nd game. Spaletti's 3 new signings in their 1st 2 games:2 MOTMs, 2 goals, & 2 assists. The perfect remedy for Kafka's winter doldrums. It's not even the results per se, as much as it is the flair & the true passion...sangfroid never was for Roma anyway...Forza.
I knew I was forgetting someone....don't forget Gervinho for $18 mil; God bless the godless Chinese.![]()

Chinese clubs have been raiding Brazil for some time now - buying up youth as well as older players. Ramires, Gyan, Paulinho, Robinho, Ba, Montero and Eidur Gudjohnsen are all there, more to follow. For a player like Martinez, late 20's and not getting regular minutes in Spain, its an easy move.Kafka said:...don't forget Gervinho for $18 mil; God bless the godless Chinese.Poke_4_Life said:![]()

Attendance in the Chinese major league has inched past MLS and the tv money is increasing by leaps and bounds. What they're missing, oddly enough, is grass roots talent, even though there's so many of them. Chinese moms and dads steer their kids away from "wasting their time" pursuing sports seriously. They're really a fascinating new dynamic to world footy.Chinese clubs have been raiding Brazil for some time now - buying up youth as well as older players. "Borja" Baston is a classic Spanish striker...I've spoken of his abilities in this thread when he played (on loan) for Real Zaragoza; he almost singlehandedly brought RZ to the brink of La Liga promotion, & subsequently has had a similar impact for Eibar this year...impressive for his age. Atletico has handled his loans/progression extremely well & I think he'd make the transition to AM rather well. There's been recent rumours in the Italian press of Simione leaving for Inter this summer...any truth to that?Great deal for Atlético, getting 42m for him after a terrible half season. They paid 35m for him in the summer. I don't know how his value has increased, but I hope there's nothing shady about the deal.
So they'll get through the rest of the season with who they have up top (Griezmann, Carrasco, Vietto, Correa, and Torres). Only one of those is a true CF, and he's not scoring many goals since he left Liverpool. He likely won't be designed by Atlético so I hope he finds the net once more to get to 100 Ateti goals.
I have to think that Atlético will make a move for another true #9 this summer. They may bring back Bastón who is having a breakout year with Eibar in la primera right now, but that's not going to cost them much. Proven, quality #9s are very hard to come by. Not sure who they still go after.
I'm not an expert on the history, but recommend The Damned United if you're interested in Clough. It was on Netflix a few years ago when I first watched. I don't know if its historically accurate, but is very well done, great acting good story - covers what is the biggest blot on his record, the 44 day stint at Leeds. Can someone with a better sense of history/longer knowledge of the English game explain Brian Clough to me?
I knew he'd led Nottingham Forest into the First Division and then won the league and two European Cups, but didn't know he also managed Derby to a win in 1972.
Is he revered as one of the great English managers of all-time? I've never really heard much about him at all, but taking those two teams to titles has to rank as one of the great achievements in English soccer?
It's funny how many great managers announce their arrival by winning trophies at a relatively smaller club... Mourinho winning the CL at Porto, SAF taking Aberdeen to the Scottish title then beating Real in the Cup Winners Cup, etc. Why did Clough stay at Forest for another 10 years instead of move to a big club?
No doubt he should be mentioned as one of the great managers in English football history, and he was also a good striker when he played. I think he was close to a goal per game in over 200 league games before he tore his knee. Can someone with a better sense of history/longer knowledge of the English game explain Brian Clough to me?

Those early to mid 70s years in particular were a down period for Man U. They were even relegated in 74. By the early 80s, they had some FA cup success but nothing really in the league until Sir Alex.I love this place sometimes...great info -- thanks all.
Also, I always assumed Damned United was about Man U. Kind of an English remake of Thise Damn Yankees. Had no idea what it was.
I recall this being suggested in the movie, as Taylor didn't follow him to Leeds where he failed. There are also some good youtubes featuring some of his rants and the Clough/Revie stuff. There's also the feeling, accurate or not, that Clough relied so heavily on Peter Taylor that it was tough to separate out their separate influences on the teams.
I had that part of the story, but I didn't realize Damned United was an old movie. Thought it was more recent. Those early to mid 70s years in particular were a down period for Man U. Someone on ESPNFC mentioned how it might not be a coincidence that AM is partly owned by a Chinese conglomerate.Great deal for Atlético, getting 42m for him after a terrible half season. shhhh... he's clearly got some kind of temporal disorder.SOMETIMES!?I love this place sometimes...great info -- thanks all.
Well, Gator posts occasionally.SOMETIMES!?I love this place sometimes...great info -- thanks all.
This developing Chinese "dynamic" could be quite interesting...just read that one team made Zenit a 90 offer for Hulk, while another has offered PSG's Lavezzi 10 per yr wages...insanity. Whatever happened to the railroads?Attendance in the Chinese major league has inched past MLS and the tv money is increasing by leaps and bounds. it's going to be sad when he's done.Kafka said:...speaking of insanity...Messi just tallied his 500th career goal in today's Copa Del Rey 7-0 demolition of Neville's Valencia. 500. Now that's "Magesterial!"
