I had no idea they could do this but youth players now have to take an age test.

26 out of the 60 Nigerian U17 players tested failed the MRI test.  Everyone but 2 on the first U17 National team are now ineligible to play.

Not coincidentally, Nigeria have won the FIFA U17 World Cup a record five times – 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013 and 2015.
the danny almonte rule.

no idea.  Here is the text from the article I read:

===============================================================

Nigeria will be hugely depleted for Saturday’s U17 AFCON qualifier at home against Niger after a staggering 26 players out of 60 failed the mandatory MRI screening conducted last week.A top official told only AfricanFootball.com that what is disturbing is not only the high number of those who failed the age test, but the quality of those who will not be eligible as the Eaglets starting XI have been completely wiped out with only two surviving players.

yeah.

you can't fill a stadium (thus, losing revenue)... so guess what- you get to lose even more revenue.
reading between the lines, it appears to be telling the teams to pack the stands that the camera's face, even if they have to leave the rest of the stadium empty.

MLS tried this back when they could not draw flies to the stadiums and it created just the worst atmosphere you could imagine staring at a blank side of the stadium.

I don't think it's a bad thing for La Liga.  Forces clubs to revisit ticket pricing strategies, which may end up generating more revenue.  It also gives the appearance of a more compelling product to sell to broadcasters, presumably overseas.

Maybe an MRI to look at growth plates and therefore somehow extrapolate age?  Seems very inexact.  But not surprised that Niger would be cheating.  Kinda like kids from the Latin America in baseball.

That seems to be a good guess.  I had never heard of this before to be honest but maybe it has been around for a while?

I remember my daughter (who is super tiny at 4'9")  had some tests when she was younger to determine why she stopped growing and it was some sort of MRI where they were looking at specific areas of bones to see if she had finished growing or not based on her age.

I know Merriit Paulson (owner of the Timbers) rubs many the wrong way but I have always appreciated his candor.

He wrote an interesting letter to the Timbers fans not only explaining what the US Open Cup and CCL were but more importantly explaining how these tournaments are prioritized by the Timbers.  People might not like his answer to the prioritization but I believe it to be pretty honest.

Polish kid (19) Bartosz signs with LC... tidy pick-up that- thought he looked great in euros and IIRC, qualifying vs germany.

My son is almost 16, hasn't started puberty and had a similar test.  They xray his hand to look at the growth plates an determine the bone age.  In his case he has 12 year old bones.

After typing this not sure how they could use that to disqualify players.

I'M THE KING IN MY CASTLE.

(might have free tickets to RM vs BM tonight... :fingerscrossed: )
oh yes. it's on!*

friend is friends/colleagues with the wife of a guy who is BM's pr guy for the USA. :loco:  ... she says we have tickets waiting for us at will-call tonight.

friend and I are taking the bus (at rush-hour) from port authority out there hoping that's the case. so... this could go anywhere from complete cluster #### to an absolute win.

to begin with- the PA is an absolute horror-show. google john oliver and port authority for a decent glimpse... at rush-hour x infinity.

then... we have to sit in a bus in rushhour traffic to the meadowlands- I've done this trip in anything from 20-90 minutes.

next, we have to find will call at a ginormous stadium.

*after that, hope against hope that our tickets are there.

after that?

no tickets and a slow-boat home to the PA. or...

go inside to seats that, given the source, could range from team corporate extravagance sky-box to whatever/somewhere seats in the hinterlands. as far as I'm concerned, if we've hit this point it's a giant win regardless. but of course... corporate seats... :rubbinghandstogether:

wish me luck!

I'm not seeing the problem here, you go to the liquor store before boarding the bus and buy a bottle of alcohol (see the euro thread for which drinks) and then poof*** your bus ride will be over in minutes. /Kafka :hophead:

Not true...usually I'm not allowed to board said bus, due to intake of copious amounts of alcohol...thanks, buddy. #lookingforasponsor

eta: good luck, Floppo!

meanwhile the LVG tribute, I mean Rooney testimonial game vs Everton ends 0-0 at Old Trafford.  Lets hope thats the last of that.

We got in.... pretty great seats,  which made up for the ####storm at PA. Pretty great night
Sounds pretty great. ;)
:)

got to PA around 5:45 for 7:30 kickoff, told that the bus would take 15-20mins. PA per John Oliver. when we got there, there were signs for buses to the game... walked inside and saw a line that was big, but looked like it would move... plus it was air-conditioned. kept following it outside the building the find the end...in rape-alley. we waited in that line at the PA for 45 minutes and packed onto a standing room bus- stood on that for 45 minutes.. but pleasant minutes- my friend who hooked me up with the ticket had just gotten back from hong kong and so I got to hear all about it. bus stopped on the far end of the parking lot, so we schlepped it to the stadium, knowing we weren't going to see the opening kickoff. first step accomplished.

we find our way to will-call, give our names and start praying. lady looks one place, then another, comes back and asks us where the tickets came from (I'm already looking to see exactly how far that walk was to the bus drop off)... and then finally finds them. phew. second step accomplished... and it's all gravy from here.

walked in to find our seats- amazing. beautiful night without much humidity or heat and a huge crowd (82k)

the game definitely lacked tempo for most of it... lots of guys not making the run they'd normally make... but just great to see these guys in person. really impressed with Modric, who constantly found the non-obvious pass to unlock things. also loved watching Rafinha and Isco- so tidy on the ball and also great vision to find the showing or diagonal run. Ramos was a beast out there... especially matching up against Green (I'll talk about him in the US thread) where for the most part Ramos anticipated the run and pass before Green, but also just ate up everything that came to him particularly in the air. and damn me, but Marcello was the MoM- knew he had his guy's number and then relished putting on a show about it on both sides of the ball- the crowd ate it up.

PRETTY great night, especially on the free.

Glad to hear...good "people" deserve good things...  ;)   The journey is always better than the destination...

oh- btw... loved seeing kierkegaard out there. been excited to see him play since hearing about him before his move to RM (wasn't he linked with ManUnited?). not sure how old he is now... 18? but damn, you can tell he's something special. quick feet, nice vision, good pace, smart runs and a velcro-like left foot.

Ok so a lot can happen in to one's ranking of players in the span of just one game, after yesterday my rankings are now:

1. Allie Long

2. Alex Morgan

3. Christen Press

 Kelly O'hara >>> Allie Long

Alex Morgan

Christen Press

Kelly O'hara

Think they're going to roll out a Neymar, Gabigol, Gabriel Jesus forward line.

Gabriel Jesus is my newest YouTube fixation.
Yeah, I am not positive of the formation, bit looks like 433 with them in front.

P.S. what is the best soccer app for the Olympics?  FotMob, my go-to kinda sucks.  OneFootball is better, but not by much.
