I have a lot to say about this post but let's just say that it's a tangent that will just make all of my MLS friends mad and leave it at that. I'm certainly not going to disagree with Scooby's observation, however.

They're coming out of the woodwork, lots of clubs are being implicated. Newcastle now being accused of an active cover-up in their own case.

Stung by accusations that they had paid ‘hush money’ to prevent damaging allegations of abuse from being made public following the Telegraph revelations, Chelsea took the highly unusual step of waiving a gagging clause that prevented one of Heath’s victims from speaking out. 

That victim – former striker  Gary Johnson – has waived his right to anonymity to talk about his ordeal and the payment, which he said was £50,000 and made last year.

“I felt shame [about the abuse], I felt my childhood had been taken away,” said Johnson, 57, who was a first-team member from 1978 to 1981. “I spent my late teens in turmoil, absolute turmoil.

“I think  they [Chelsea] were paying me to keep a lid on this,” he told the Daily Mirror. “Millions of fans around the world watch Chelsea. They are one of the biggest and richest clubs in the world. All their fans deserve to know the truth about what went on. I know they asked me to sign a gagging order and how many others are there out there?”

The talent across the league is better today than it was when the league was at 14 teams so it is possible to grow teams and keep talent spread.

They need to do two very simple things to help protect this:

1) pay the youth more to make sure the leaks to Europe directly from the acdemies slow down

2) raise the international player limit number per team.   As the number of teams grow, the amount of jobs for Americans will grow and the need to have a international limit per team should be minimized.  There are truckloads of relatively affordable South Americans that should be able to balance the talent as the league grows.

that said there are almost certainly going to be bumps along the way.  That is inevitable in any expansion effort.

FWIW, the guy that bought the Carolina Railhawks from Traffic seems to want to pursue an MLS team fairly quickly (they're making a "major" announcement next Weds I think).  They have a natural site in Cary that would seem to be easy to expand (it's 10K now).  The guy is wealthy, but probably doesn't have the nut to foot the expansion bill by himself, so it'll be interesting to see what they can put together, but this almost makes too much sense if you know that area at all.

The Town of Brackley is in the district of South Northamptonshire and has a population of 13,000. I wonder if there is a North Northamptonshire district?

That's awful but I laughed.

Callers to the sexual abuse hotline now nearing the 1,000 mark, Southampton employee implicated back in the eighties. One of many clubs to be mentioned, I would think.

- East and West will play 3 each against 6 divisional oppnents (2 home-away-home, 2 away-home-away, 1 home-home-home, 1 away-away-away) and 2 against the others.

- Central will similarly play 3 each against 6 divisional opponents and 10 against the seventh.

- 6 bonus interdivisional games, played against the teams whose prior year standings match those of the team's three-game divisional opponents. Modulus arithmatic will be used to calculate the standings of the Central division.

- Interdivisional matchups rotate yearly based on the lunar calendar.

too bad... always liked the name "railhawks". if they're going to wipe that out and go with something as idiotic as FC whatever- at least keep the railhawk in their crest/logo

This is much too complicated.  At 32, you make 8 4-team pods and then you get to play everyone once and the 3 other teams in your pod twice.  That's 34 games.  You want more games do 4 8-team pods and do the same thing.  That gets you 38 games.

somebody... shader? ... was asking about MLS offseason stuff- here ya go, from my daily RBNY email:

Following the conclusion of the MLS Cup Final on Dec. 10, the offseason calendar kicks off immediately with a few major opportunities for player movement within the league, beginning with Sunday’s Half-Day Trade Window.

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET on Dec. 11, MLS clubs will have the opportunity to make trades for the first time this offseason.

The Half-Day Trade Window will last just three hours, and once shut, no trades involving players will be permitted until the end of the Expansion Draft on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Players, SuperDraft picks, General and Targeted Allocation Money*, Allocation Rankings** and International Player Slots*** may all be exchanged in trades approved by the MLS League Office, provided all of the necessary rules regarding roster and salary budget compliance are met and the trade is completed during a valid trading period. 

* General and Targeted Allocation Money: General Allocation Money (GAM) is money that is available to a club in addition to its salary budget. GAM can be used to:

  • Sign players new to MLS (that is, a player who did not play in MLS during the previous season)
  • Re-sign an existing MLS player
  • Off-set acquisition costs (loan and transfer fees)
  • In connection with the extension of a player’s contract for the second year provided the player was new to MLS in the immediately prior year
  • Reduce the Salary Budget Charge of a Designated Player to a limit of $150,000.
Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) is money used to invest in their roster outside of the player salary budget. TAM can be used in four ways:

  • Clubs may use the funds to sign a new player provided his salary and acquisition costs are more than the maximum salary budget
  • Re-sign an existing player provided he is earning more than the maximum salary budget
  • Use a portion of or all of the available TAM to convert a Designated Player to a non-Designated Player by buying down his salary budget charge to at or below the maximum salary budget charge
  • Trade their TAM to another club.
** Allocation Rankings: The Allocation Process is the mechanism used to determine which MLS Club has first priority to acquire a player listed on the Allocation Ranking List. The list will consist of (i) select U.S. Men’s National Team players, (ii) elite youth U.S. National Team players, or (iii) former MLS players returning to MLS after joining a non-MLS club for a transfer fee greater than $500,000. For the current Allocation Rankings, visit mlssoccer.com/allocation.

*** International Player Slots: In 2016, a total of 160 international roster spots are divided among the 20 clubs. These spots are tradable, in full season increments, such that some clubs may have more than eight and some clubs may have fewer than eight. There is no limit on the number of international roster spots on each club’s roster.

For U.S.-based clubs, any Player who does not qualify as a U.S. Domestic Player in a U.S. Club shall be considered an International Player, and must occupy an international slot on a U.S. Club’s Roster.

For U.S. Clubs, a domestic player is either a U.S. Citizen, a permanent resident (Green Card holder) or the holder of certain other special status (e.g., has been granted refugee or asylum status).  There is no limit as to the number of U.S. Domestic Players on a U.S. Club’s Roster.
