Wolfsburg over Braunschweig 1-0 in leg one.  Leg two Monday at Braunschweig.

Relegation BL2 v BL3
Jahn Regensberg and 1860 draw 1-1 in leg one.  Leg two Tuesday at 1860.

Rumors have it that Spurs have snookered Liverpool to the "Next Dele" - top prospect who supported Liverpool as a kid, but passed on the chance to sign with them ... :coffee:

Who had the 2nd best season in the EPL?

I think despite their obvious struggles I can make a decent argument for United.  Community Shield and League Cup are nice but the Euro Cup win changed the outlook of the whole season.  Three trophies and Champions League is a good haul for a down year.  

Note - just to be clear, not saying 2nd best but 2nd best season.  United definitely deserved their spot in the table.

very cool!  The atmosphere at Cincy always looks very good on the highlights.

I hope they can figure out a stadium situation because it looks like they have the makings of a huge fan base should they get into MLS.

18,000+ today was the announced attendance today. Moving from Nippert could be tricky. Clifton just seems like the "right" place for soccer. Lots of places for supporter groups to gather and head to the games. I don't think that would work downtown.

Drum roll please....

Spurs Ladies have secured promotion to the Women's Super League for the first time in their history...subject to a few technicalities.  They are still a level below Arsenal, but this has been a fantastic year for Spurs.

 
There's a bunch of EPL teams I'm not a fan of, several I flat don't like...  most have some redeeming value that I can deal with.

But now... now there's finally a team in the league I hate (hate is a strong word for my, I've taught my children that it is profane).

Can't remember if this is the thread for youth soccer talk, but here goes.  And before i get to my question, just to be clear, I'm not #####ing about the outcome, I'm just curious.

My son's U13 team was in a tourney this weekend where the top team from a group of 4 advanced to the semifinals of a knockout stage.  They slept-walked through the first game and lost 2-1, struggled in game 2 but won 2-1, and then beat the undefeated team in the group 4-1 the next day.  So in the end, 3 teams were on 6 pts and 1 team on 0.  Goal differential was +3 for son's team, +2 for next team, and + 1 for third team.

However, in reading the rules, GD wasn't the tie-breaker, it was "positive" GD.  Apparently, you get the positive points when you win, but don't get the negative points for a loss. In other words, son's team got +3 for last win, but the team they beat didn't get -3, they got 0.  So the team they beat 4-1 advanced.

So my question to all the soccer heads is what's the reasoning behind positive goal differential? Google gave me nothing.

In the end, the kids felt aggrieved, but i think most parents were happy not to have to get up for an 8 am game this morning.

I've never heard of positive goal differential. Head to head is most often the first tie breaker in the tournaments like this one in my experience. I've seen the goal differential limited to a max of +4 per game, I suppose so as not to reward running up the score. I can't come up with a good explanation for having positive goal differential.

Definitely very well familiar with the secret joy a parent feels when his kid's team loses early Sunday so we can all go home, with a nod and wink to the winning parents who get to stick around for the 4:00 p.m. final.

Yeah, head-to-head was first tie breaker, but the top 3 all beat each other, so went to positive GD. It was definitely nice to get to drink last night and not worry about getting the family up at 630 am.

I've not heard of "positive goal differential"  Are you sure this was not head-to-head goal differential?  i.e. only the goal differential for games against the teams that were tied?

Me either, and absolutely certain, because my son's team would have won on that too.  Here is the procedure from the tourney rule book:

9.2. Tie-Breaker System after division play, in the order listed below:

9.2.1. When the tie-breaker system is used, the criteria are followed in order until one or more team is determined at any given step. The criteria then starts over again at the top of the tie breaker system with the remaining teams. Rules are repeated until a winner is determined.

     9.2.1.1. Head-to-head competition (if there is a 3 team tie, proceed to the next tie-breaker)

     9.2.1.2. Most wins

     9.2.1.3. Positive Goal Differential (the difference between goals for and goals against) with up to five (5) bonus points per game. For example, 6-1 and                        5-0 scores each earn five bonus points. There will be no negative points awarded, zero points will be awarded for a loss.

     9.2.1.4. Most shutouts

     9.2.1.5. Fewest goals against

     9.2.1.6. Penalty Kicks – FIFA penalty kick procedure will be used to determine a winner

While I've never heard of it, my guess is so it promotes attacking football (i.e. so the losing team doesn't bunker to keep GD low).  The whole AYSO setup these days is trying to promote more positive football.

Yeah, that was the possibility I came up with too.  Although, in my experience, if 12 year olds bunker, it's because they're tired of getting beaten down and not some grand strategy.

It was funny watching the end of the last game b/c neither team was sure of the rules.  We were up 4-1 and still rushing throw ins and corners and the team that was actually through based on the TB was doing the same.  I could tell a few of the parents on the other side thought our coach was an jerk for yelling at kids to keep pushing when up 3 goals.

actually happy about Wenger- although only so he gets the victory lap he deserves. would prefer it happened this year, so they can just get on with whatever's next. don't see anybody they bring in being better or provide more entertaining soccer than what wenger has provided the neutrals out there. 

of course, now that tuchel is available... 

really potential suckage for CP, who needs the right guy to plug and play him, IMO. would be a genuine shame (and not impossible, IMO) for the new guy to come in and just go with bigger names or germans- they have a glut of similar players there, and it wouldn't be the first time a deserving american gets the shaft because of a change of management.

Putting on my LFC hat (is it ever really off?), this is the time to strike on Pulisic.

He has a relationship with Klopp, LFC wanted him last year and now there has to be uncertainty regarding CP.  I'd like to see LFC strike quickly to try and get a transfer done.

As for Pulisic, I hope he does legitimately consider his options.  A place like Liverpool or Tottenham could be good for him but more than anything you want to see him remain on a team with talent.  I hope he doesn't find a new coach who buries him.  For what it's worth, I was worried about his PT this year when the season started, but Tuchel really played him a lot, which was a good thing.

I was thinking LFC would be a good spot for him... but where does he play? who does he put on the bench? certainly in a rotating roster with Mane, Cutypie, Firminho, Sturridge... I'm sure I"m forgetting a bunch more guys they use up front but list as MFs.

eta: and IMO, it's more important that he keeps playing. surrounded by talent would be great- easier to showcase your abilities for sure... but not if he's surrounded by talent and not getting the minutes to continue his development

Tottenham would be ideal for Pulisic - but he would probably be a starter at Liverpool.   ;)

We have talked about it at SC - Pulisic would be the ideal back-up to both Dele and Eriksen when Spurs play the 3421.  But he would really only be guaranteed starts in Cup matches, and the 1st three CL matches (Dele is suspended).  He would almost certainly see 50+ appearances at Tottenham though.

Didn't I read that Reus had a significant injury in the last game?  If so, that would seem to open up a starting slot for Pulisic for the foreseeable future at Dortmund, no matter who the manger will be.  So, I can't see Dortmund wanting to sell this summer.
