62K.  Not a sell out but both teams looked to have good representation of fans.  Tons of Euro soccer stars were at the game as well.

It was a great game topped off with the best player on the field announcing after the game he is coming to MLS.
Highlight for me was the "Benedetto face" which surely will be seen on t-shirts similar to the Dempsey Face (which my son has).

Great game though, if a bit sanitized due to the location.  End to end and some great goals, great drama in extra time.  I don't have any allegiance to either team and was completely neutral.

ok, so United actually beat a bottom of the table Fulham.  Now a meaningless game vs Valencia mid week.  Followed by a crushing defeat away to Liverpool on the weekend.  Should be fun

BREAKING: Leonardo confirms "Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not come to #ACMIlan "
Sounds more like LAG won't let him leave for free like it was initially reported. It sounds like Ibra and Milan already have a deal agreed on but the thing holding everything back is LAG who don't want to give him up for free. We won't know anything more about any of this until UEFA  rules on Milan's penalties for their bogus FFP. Only seems they are concerned about certain teams spending too much which is why I think the whole FFP is a joke. Milan could be penalized for a fine or some sort of transfer ban etc.

Wasn't Benedetto in some rumors for Europe a few yrs ago? I know he's older now but I thought for sure if was Europe or MLS

Super Mario now could return to Italy? Reports out of Italy say Mino RIalo has offered Mario Ballotelli to the AC Milan. He's currently at Nice and hasn't scored but he's also out of contract in the summer and a decent offer could entice Nice to sell the player in Jan. He's been talked about as an alternative to Ibra. I've also heard rumors but nothing concrete besides suggestions of a reunion with The Duck Alexandre Pato who is currently in China. just so we're clear any striker Milan signs is to be a third back up spot starter at this point. Gattuso has no intentions of giving up playing time to Young Italian International Patric Cutrone. IL Pipa is still dealing with a back issue and can allow for more rest as well for him.

Milan offered Super Mario as an Ibra alternative

Why is Dockal even on this list? I thought he was just loaned to the Union? If Cincy claim him does that mean they have to negotiate with his China club for him? Also I'll lose zero sleep if Cincy takes Jay Simpson off our books. Dear god I shake my head everytime I see his contract listed

Philadelphia Union

Warren Creavalle

Borek Dockal

Marcus Epps

Fabinho

Richard Marquez

John McCarthy

Jake McGuire

Haris Medunjanin

Kacper Przybylko

Jay Simpson

Josh Yaro

the revs just breathed a big sigh of relief...
A couple of years ago, I would pass the Revs practice field (ie a free patch of grass behind Gillette) while driving to games.

They had so many geese crapping all over the field that they had to put up some stupid looking fake statues to scare them off.

One day, some guy was walking his dog on the field to check out the statues and his dog took an enormous crap on the field.

But hey it's season ticket time again so we got our yearly "We really want to build a new stadium, really we do" article in the paper.

I do at least give them credit for FINALLY building the Revs a real training facility.  I can't imagine how painful it must have been to make that decision for the Krafts

God do I love MLS trades!!!!!!!!!!!    I am just imagining the poor software engineer who codes for Football Manager being asked to cover these items...........

====================

Toronto FC announced today that the club has acquired the No. 2 spot in the Allocation Ranking Order from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for $75,000 of General Allocation Money (GAM), $75,000 of Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) and the No. 6 spot in the Allocation Ranking Order.

MLS certainly needs a better system. I get why it's in there for league competitiveness but Jesus they really need a better system

Your reverse jinx can not stand!

0-0 as Liverpool have 94% of the possession, hit the woodwork 7 times and DeGea has the game of his life.
its so sad how far United has fallen since SAF stepped down... so much so that  I would be happy with this as a supporter.

United supporters are rapidly becoming what they made fun of Arsenal and Liverpool supporters for.  Striving for top 4 EPL and rd 16 CL or living off long ago glory.

Man U have become the Dallas fans of the EPL. Always talking about their past but haven't been successful for a long time. ManU fans have become what they made fun of for yrs and I'm actually quite enjoying it.

We got that Hollywood ending. @ColumbusCouncil passed ordinance 3482-2018 to #SavetheCrew and redevelop MAPRE Stadium into the Community Sports Park. Should this be an @E60 original or a full fledged blockbuster? Thoughts

The flipside is how amazing SAF made Untied. When you have the top cities in the world to choose from #### Manchester probably. Give me Cleveland at that point.

Okay, I'll bite.  Who's that?  Pavon?

My buddy sent me this so no link

Josef Martinez has received many accolades, but here's a unique one:

On Saturday, he was the top-selling player in terms of merchandise on Fanatics' platforms. That means he was the top across all sports (NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL/etc) -  the 1st time an MLS player has been #1.

I saw this article.  This above helped MLS Cup to deliver more than double the revenue generated of the previous highest MLS Cup in terms of merchandise sales nation wide.  This was one of many reasons the league was likely rooting for Atlanta to make it and win.

From every thing we have seen business was very good.

I'm in the bandwagon of people who thought pro soccer in ATL would fail.

very happy to be very wrong about this.
it looked to me like the initial set up was identical to here in NE, coupled with an area not known to be heavily invested in sports to begin with.   I was not in any way encouraged when we first found out they were being considered.

I was even more wrong than you and it all starts at the top.  It is amazing how a guy like Blank, who from all reports had almost no knowledge of the sport, has made continually the "right" decisions on how to build an organization.

Pablo Maurer‏Verified account @MLSist

Some news re: Zlatan - I'm told he's re-signed w/the club as of yesterday. Renegotiated deal for this coming season only it looks like, sees his pay increase significantly. Club wouldn't comment on specifics

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect but when I heard Blank was in charge I knew it would be well run.  That doesn’t always mean success on the field as there’s too many variables to assure major success.  Blank is a very savvy business man and he seems to have the right balance of control and letting people do what they are good at - and to that point he seems to do an excellent job hiring the right people.  Despite what happened in the Super Bowl he’s made the Falcons a solid franchise after 30+ years of being a laughingstock.  I love the guy.

Exactly!   As to your point of being a success on the field, I agree that there is no way to know.

The specific items I was referring to was:

* Getting the right people in the right places (the trio below has worked near flawlessly)

-Eales with his Euro knowledge

-Boca with his US knowledge

-Tata with his South American ties

* Blank understanding that he needed to over reach for a coach to cement some legitimacy to the team

* Blank understanding that he first needed to invest before he would see growth (something that the Kraft's use a 180 degree different philosophy).   The immediate large expenditure on a training and academy facility before they had any indication of the financial success they were going to have was heartening.

* The entire front office yanking the rest of the league into understanding that paying transfer fees, especially for young players, is not the devil incarnate.

Atlanta now needs to just complete the Almiron transfer (for hopefully good money) and then announce Pity to again show the rest of the league how this is cyclical.  (see my next post for some information on MLS across the board getting ready to finally enter the global market)

It has been a slow and arduous process for those older fans like me who have always wanted to see MLS get involved in the international buying and selling market.  For far too many years/decades, MLS continually fooled themselves into thinking that they would some how demean themselves to their fans if they sold players.

It finally looks like that is all about to turn. This article is well worth a full read but if you just want the highlights, skip down to the section entitled "Selling League"

State of the league address signifies significant and positive changes for MLS

In soccer for a club like them yes it is.
Probably right

It really is.  He won the league going away in his last year and the same team fell to 7th under someone else.

And he could do it on a cold night in Stoke

If I am reading the tiebreakers correctly any win by Liverpool puts them through, correct?

Edit: Nevermind, any one goal win by Liverpool that's not 1-0 and they are out due to number 4.

 I guess things would get real weird if PSG only get a point and there is a three-way tie on 9.

1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;

5. Goal difference in all group matches;

6. Goals scored in all group matches;

7. Away goals scored in all group matches;

8. Wins in all group matches;

9. Away wins in all group matches;

10. Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);

11. UEFA club coefficient.

Liverpool need to win 1-0 or by 2 goals if Napoli score.  Any other result put Napoli through (assuming PSG win)

ETA - 1-0 = Liverpool are through on total goals scored

Any other 1-goal win, and Napoli will advance on away goals.
